I read this book in two sittings and raced through it. It has quite short chapters and is only around 200 pages long which makes it such a short and easy read.
After reading The Doctor’s Wife, I had no idea where this story was going to start or where it was going to go but it kept shocking me with all of its twists and turns. I won’t spoil anything incase anyone hasn’t read the first book but I’d definitely recommend them both!
However, it did feel to me like both of the books in this series were perhaps one book at some point and has just been split down the middle. I also felt a little disappointed towards the end and the ending came quite suddenly. However, it has been set up perfectly for a sequel which I’ll definitely read because I need to find out what happens!
This was a follow up to the Doctors Wife. Easy read but lacked believability and depth on some levels. The characters were all fairly simplistic. Enjoyed it for what it was.
I don't like to write 2-star reviews but this book was flat and uninspired.
It's a Book 2 written from the POV of a woman who killed her husband and framed his lover for the crime. The other POV is a man she's dating who unbeknownst to her is aware of her crime and is trying to bring her down.
The plot is non-existent with plenty of filler that does nothing to move the story forward. The author's writing style is repetitive and consists of way too much telling and barely any showing. There's no tension. The story just plods along.
Most disappointing of all - there is no twist! The book is painfully predictable. We know the characters' motivations from the start from their inner dialogue and nothing really happens to subvert the expected events.
Spoilers: here are some of the issues I had with this:
- Greg's motivation makes no sense. He wasn't that close to Drew that he would move mountains like this to avenge his death. And why is he so convinced Fern did it anyway? It's never satisfactorily explained.
- How could a GP's widow have so much money that she never has to work again? GPs don't make that much.
- How did Alice get convinced on such flimsy circumstantial evidence? Her phone called Drew to arrange the meetup? Fingerprints on a murder weapon that came from her house? Come on. I felt the author was just going for the lowest common denominator. And the police seem to be total idiots.
- why did Fern run away? A woman smart enough to frame someone for murder while getting away with 2 would bolt knowing all the police had was a drunken taped confession? Any défense attorney could get that thrown out. It means nothing without evidence. And how could Alice get released on this basis? It makes no sense.
Overall this was a very weak book. Would not recommend:
If you enjoyed The Doctor’s Wife then you will love The Doctor’s Widow. It had me hooked from the start. It’s a fast paced, gripping thriller. A psychological thriller with plenty of twists that will keep you entertained. It’s hinting at a book three and I can’t wait. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
Another Winner by Daniel Hurst! I loved The Doctor’s Wife so I was ecstatic to be chosen for The Doctor’s Widow. Great book, love the characters and it’s a quick read. Definitely read the first book so you will enjoy this one even more! I’m hoping for a 3rd book- great ending! Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Daniel Hurst for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Daniel Hurst for the opportunity to read an advance copy of The Doctor’s Widow (The Doctor’s Wife, Part 2), to be published 23 August 2023. This domestic thriller kept me racing to the end to find out whether she would kill again and if she would get away with previous murders! Although this is Book 2 and I read The Doctor’s Wife, this is a good standalone as well. The protagonist is definitely a force to be reckoned with. 5/5 Stars. I look forward to more from this author! #NetGalley #Bookouture #DanielHurst #TheDoctor’sWidow
This was a great sequel. It starts right up where the "wife" left off. Cannot wait for the 3rd!!?? Alice will seek justice but will she prevail?
I read and enjoyed the Doctor's Wife so when I saw this one, I knew I had to request it. I was definitely hooked and finished this book all in one day, but as soon as the identity of Rory was revealed, I knew what was going to happen. It was very predictable. I wanted to give it a 3/5, but the twist at the end for Fern and for Alice bumped it up to a 4.
Please please please tell me there’s another book coming in this series and soon as you can’t leave me hanging like this. Wow i loved the first book and thought where could it go from here but was not disappointed with the second instalment as someone is out to get to the truth about what really happened to Doctor Devlin and will stop at nothing to get it even if it means their life is put in danger. Is the wrong woman currently in a jail cell. Do not miss this book.
Oh wow! The craziness continues with book #2 from Daniel Hurst’s “Doctor” series. The main character, Fern, is nuts and self-absorbed, and yet I find myself rooting for her. I was thinking this book was 3.5 stars, but the ending definitely brought it up to 4. And the way some things were left hanging, I’m thinking book 3 could be even better. There’s a somewhat unexpected twist (or twists) at the end. As in The Doctor’s Wife, Hurst continues to employ an informative and introspective inner dialogue, wacky thinking and sometimes psychotic reasoning. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. A quick, easy, enjoyable read! Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC.
I loved the Doctors Wife so was so excited to be given the chance to read The Doctors Widow and it did not disappoint! I read this in a few hours as I could not put it down. From the very beginning I was hooked, the chapters are so easy to fly through and I love the way that Daniel writes. The different povs allowed us to really see into the characters minds and them justifying their actions, that made the book even more compelling.
This book follows Fern and her life after the death of her husband Drew, who was a doctor and his mistress who was accused and convicted for his murder. We also see Fern growing close to Rory, who she has recently starting dating but there is more his intentions than she realises, and is it too late when she does?
Thank you to @netgalley, @bookoture and @danielhurstbooks for the copy of this book (all opinions are my own), releasing august 23rd!!
Having read The Doctors Wife I was so excited to read The Doctors Widow, and all I can say is what an amazing book, it was literally on the edge of my seat and couldn't stop reading and judging by the ending I'm wondering if there will be book 3.
Possible spoilers ahead if you havent read The Doctor's Wife book 1 in this series.................................
Fern Devlin is feeling pretty smug with herself and boy doesn't it show, she's literally got away with murder and is joyfully spending her late husbands money. And has a new relationship which she's taking slowly as she wants everyone to feel sorry for the "grieving" widow. But her new man Roger has his own agenda and this could quite possibly be Fern's downfall
I love Daniel Hurst books, he writes fast paced psychological thrillers and I'm amazed at how quickly he can write them, but that can only be good news for fans of his books. I didn't enjoy this 2nd book as much as the first but I think it's because I didn't like Ferns character, but again that's a credit to Daniels writing that he can provoke this reaction. It looks as though there may be a 3rd in the series so I look forward to this.
3.5 rounded up to 4
I received this advanced copy from Netgalley and Bookouture, I'm not obliged to leave my review
3.5 rounded up to 4.
This is a follow up book to The Doctor's Wife. Dr. Drew Devlin was murdered in the first book by his wife Fern after she discovered he was having an affair with Alice. She enlists Alice's husband Rory to help her with th murder. Turns out Alice ends up going to jail while Fern is a free woman.
This picks up with Fern's new life. Buying a nice car, a beautiful house and doing whatever she wants. The story switches between characters and is a fast fun read. In the first book, Both couples lived in Manchester, but when Alice moves to a very rural setting to get away from Dr. Drew, as she wants to end the affair, Dr. Drew convinces Fern they must move also. Fern is already aware of the affair and she agrees to move to sort of test her husband and he fails miserably.
I must say I was rooting for Fern to get her just desserts after everythin her holier than thou husband put her through. This book ended with a cliffhanger so I'm not sure if there will be another or if that was the end.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it and highly recommend this book and the first in this series. It kept me intrigued, involved and interested.
I loved The Doctor's Wife and so i was anticipating The sequel The Doctor's Widow to be just as good.
This book was just as amazing as the first book of this series, The Doctors Wife. It had me on edge from page one till the end.
I am hoping there will be a third book coming as it didnt have much of an ending.
Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own and aren't influenced by anyone else
Part one of The Doctors Widow felt very long and drawn out but once I got to part two I was able to actually get into the book and it was hard to put down.
This is book 2 in the series “The Doctors Wife” but this was a read I feel you could complete as a stand-alone. Fern is back, spending all her husbands life insurance money while Alice is still in jail. Fern has a new boyfriend that stirs up some trouble.
I enjoyed the multi-POV chapters and that it was a quick read once I got into the book. There weren’t any big twists in the book and I feel like the book could’ve been finished in one book instead of leaving us on a cliffhanger that will ultimately lead to book #3.
I do hope there will be a book 3 because i’m interested on how the characters Fern and Alice develop.
I was so excited when I saw Daniel Hurst wrote a sequel to the doctors widow.
I really enjoyed this book, as usual Daniel deliver d twists and turns that you don’t see coming and betrayal and suspense.
I love how he always writes short chapters, always gives me an excuse to read one more haha.
I have read every Daniel Hurst book and they just get better and better.
I love the name Fern!
I am feeling with how it left off that there could be a third? I hope so!!
Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
5/5 as always
Before I get started, this is a sequel and has spoilers! Stop reading now if you have not read “The Doctor’s Wife.”
“The Doctor’s Widow,” picks up with Fern, recently wealthy from her husband’s death, buying a new home. Poor Alice is still in jail. Fern is dating a new man, but he is not all that he seems.
If I am being honest, this almost felt like a part of a book, and not an entire book. There is no ending, but the sequel is set-up perfectly for part 3. I personally, liked the first book better, but will still read the next one because I am dying to know what happens to Fern and Alice! Like other Hurst books it’s a very quick, intriguing read! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first book in the series and did not like it. However, I thought that there was some promise for a sequel especially now that Drew Devlin’s POV is removed. Unfortunately, this book was even worse than the previous one.
The new main character in this book is Greg, known to Fern as “Roger.” Greg was a “casual friend” of Drew’s and suspects that Drew’s wife, Fern, is actually responsible for his murder. His suspicion is based on one single piece of evidence: Drew told him years ago about an incident where Fern become extremely angry and jealous when she suspected that Drew was cheating. His reasoning is totally absurd because it’s a huge leap from a jealous wife to a murderer. For the first half of the book, Greg does not find a single additional piece of evidence to implicate Fern but somehow only becomes more convinced of Fern’s guilt. Greg comes across as extremely weird and obsessive even when the narrative constantly tries to portray him as a hero.
At least the first book created some tension as we follow Drew’s growing lies and subterfuge while Fern schemes against her husband. This book doesn’t even attempt that since everything has already been laid out in the first few chapters. Greg explains his plan to seduce Fern, get her drunk, and record her murder confession or find evidence implicating her in the murder of Drew. For the next 80% of the book, it plays out exactly as he wanted. Fern remains totally oblivious to Greg’s plan for most of the book so her POVs are totally uninteresting. In fact, most of Fern’s POV chapters basically just recount her interactions with Greg which we already see in his POV chapters so they’re not only boring but also narratively useless.
Alice’s POV is even more unnecessary since she’s in prison the whole time and does not do anything that affects the story at all. Her POV chapters exist solely to set up a third book in the series. This book is already pretty short but is comprised mostly of filler material.
Apart from the nonsensical plot and characters, the writing is also cringe-inducing. Every chapter ends with a bit of heavy-handed foreshadowing that quickly became extremely annoying. Greg’s POV chapters end with him wondering if his life is in danger from Fern. Literally, a child could guess what is about to happen to Greg.
In fact, all of the characters seem to have a child’s understanding of adult life. In the first book, it made sense to some extent that Drew’s profession as a doctor would be a major component of the story. However, in this book, the fact that Drew was a doctor and Fern was a doctor’s wife is mentioned constantly in a really forced way, completely randomly. Fern constantly mentions how Drew’s profession meant they had amazing social lives and were always attending “decadent dinner parties” and “glitzy galas.” Drew was a general practitioner, not a surgeon or specialist! He’s not a multi-millionaire and his life insurance would not have made Fern one either. I have no idea how you can write a book series about a doctor and his wife without even doing basic research or attempting to have any semblance of reality.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Doctor’s Widow. A GREAT sequel!!!! Fern is Fern and I Loved how this played out, I cannot wait for the next one in this series. Thank you for tying it all together so I didn’t have to struggle to remember what happened in The Doctor’s Wife. Daniel Hurst You are a Winner with Every book, Thank you.
