Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The Doctor’s Widow did not disappoint. From beginning to end. It was full of twist and turns. Some a bit more left field than others. I can not WAIT for the Doctor’s Mistress. That ending has me counting down the days!!
I enjoyed the first book in this series but to be honest struggled with this one. It felt very predictable and repetitive.
The Doctor's Widow, Fern, has gotten away with her husbands murder and while his mistress, Anne, sits in jail convicted of his murder, Fern is living her best life off his substantial life insurance policy!
But, is Ferns luck running out?!?!
When Fern meets handsome Roger, she starts dreaming of a future with him and having children! Roger, however, has an ulterior motive...as a friend of Fern's dead husband, he has set out to prove that Fern is guilty! So, who will come out on top? Will Roger prove that Fern is guilty or will Fern's luck continue?!
The Doctor's Widow proceeds The Doctor's Wife and continues to tell the story through the viewpoints of Fern, Alice, and Roger. While it's an interesting story with some surprises, as with The Doctor's Wife, the story drags on and held my interest little.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I couldn’t wait to read this second book in the #TheDoctorsWifeseries! It picks up right after Book 1 ended, with the same exciting pace & wicked plot with twists galore.
Book 3 cannot come soon enough!!!
I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next one.
Once again, #Daniel Hurst keeps me returning to anything he writes.
Thank you, Daniel Hurst , #Bookouture audio, Bookouture, & netgalley for my copy! All opinions are my own.

This is a sequel to The Doctor’s Wife and, as many other reviewers stated, it would be best to read the first book before diving into this one.
Fern is ready to begin her new life after her husband’s death with the help of his hefty life insurance payout. She even finds herself a new man, but this man isn’t who he says he is. Will Fern stop him before he exposes her secrets?
This book was a very quick, easy ready but it left me feeling like something was missing. The ending isn’t very clear cut but leaves room for a 3rd book to be written for the series. I wouldn’t say there were any twists and turns like your typical thriller. The author doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Overall, the book was decent and I’ll keep an eye out for the next one in this installment!
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review!
This is a continuation of “The Doctor’s Wife” which sort of left us hanging. Now we are sort of left hanging again, so there is obviously more to the story, than these two books. I loved this one SO much, I can't wait for the third one in the series! Daniel Hurst can't write fast enough to please me!
EXCERPT: The police really thought they had me when they kicked down my door and burst into my home.
They burst through the new door that belonged to the expensive house that I'd only just bought. When I settled the estate agent's fees and accepted the keys, I had no idea that the beautiful property that I had purchased would soon be swarming with police officers.
But it was.
Dozens of men and women, all of them in black and white uniforms, and all of them eager to wrap my wrists in handcuffs and march me outside to one of the waiting vehicles, while my new neighbours stopped and stared at the unsavory scene happening right in front of them in their quiet street in an affluent suburb.
That was their plan, anyway. But, as has been the case for a while now, the police's plan has always differed greatly from my own.
ABOUT 'THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW': I loved my husband, Doctor Drew Devlin, but he betrayed me. And now he’s dead.
As I put the key in the lock and open the door to the luxurious new home I’ve purchased with Drew’s life insurance money, I’m certain the worst days are behind me. My secret is safe, and I can’t wait to enjoy my new wealth and freedom.
Then I meet handsome Roger. I wasn’t looking for a relationship but as we spend our evenings drinking wine on my sunny terrace, I realise he’s just what I need right now. Roger is nothing like Drew, he’s spontaneous and romantic. And most of all, he’s honest.
He thinks I’m a rich, lonely woman. He’s wrong of course, there’s so much more to me…
But then one night, when we’re curled up in bed together, Roger says something that makes my blood run cold. I think he knows the truth about my life as the doctor’s wife.
I will do anything to stop my past from catching up with me… But is Roger really who he says he is? Or is my life now in danger?
MY THOUGHTS: Daniel Hurst writes entertaining books and the follow-up to The Doctor's Wife, The Doctor's Widow, is no exception. I will point out here, before you read any further, that you really do need to have read The Doctor's Wife before you read this, the second book in the series. Is there going to be a third? I would think so, and the ending here seems to indicate that there will be.
Fun, entertaining, and with unexpected twists, The Doctor's Widow is a fast and easy read/listen. Told from the points of view of Fern, Alice, Greg/Roger, and occasionally the detective on the case, this story has it all! Fern can appear to be quite normal at times, but underneath she is scheming and manipulative. She is going to let no one, and nothing, stand in her way of living the good life now that she has successfully disposed of her cheating husband Doctor Drew Devlin. She has everyone feeling sorry for her. What they should be doing is feeling scared of her!
This is one crazy read! Okay, I admit I rolled my eyes a couple of times as it's not always believable, but it is always fun.
I read and listened to The Doctor's Widow, narrated by Sarah Durham and Luke R Francis. While each narrated two characters, they didn't have a great tonal range, and Sarah's rendition of the male voices left a lot to be desired. It would make more sense if Sarah narrated the female characters and Luke the male.

A master plan or a disaster plan? That’s what this epic sequel tries to figure out. After reading the Doctor’s Wife, I didn’t really understand why we would carry on the story as it ended on such a great note, but I am NOT disappointed that Feen’s journey carried on. So many unexpected twists in this one I couldn’t read fast enough! Daniel Hurst is starting to become a new favorite of mine!
Good book! This was my introduction in Daniel Hurst as an author. I would recommend reading the first book The Doctor’s Wife if you want the full experience but I think you can get the gist of the story if you only read the sequel. This was a great book that sucked me in and kept my attention all the way through. Will definitely be picking up more from Daniel Hurst.
This was an excellent, well Written sequel to the Doctor’s Wife. After killing her husband and getting away with it, her husbands friend that she has no knowledge of, sets out to uncover the facts of how she murdered her husband and to set her husbands mistress free from jail that had been framed by her. This is a fast paced read full of twist and turns. A must read!
3 Stars ~
I picked up this book because I've read a book from Daniel Hurst before and I really liked it. I didn't realise this was a sequel, but I was able to still have an enjoyable experience without reading the first.
And by that ending, I assume there will be more to come.
Fern's husband has just died and she is starting her life over with the help of some hefty insurance payout, but the past is catching up to her. Is she able to keep one step ahead? Or will her secrets come out?
This was a bit of a hit-and-miss for me. The premise was fun and enjoyable, but the execution felt very repetitive to me. There is only so many times you can read one person is out for the truth and the other is trying to keep it hidden.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in the return for an honest review.
I couldn't wait to get stuck into this one, the first book was so good and one of my favourite books by Hurst. This one was even better and I powered my way through it.
It can read as a standalone, but trust me when I say you need the full experience, otherwise you just won't get it.
Following on seamlessly, the story takes up with Fern and Alice following the demise of Dr Drew Devlin. The story hots up pretty quickly and Hurst takes us on a tumultuous ride of suspense and tension, twists, and revelations, leading inexorably to book three The Doctor's Mistress, which I'm so excited for!!
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Doctor's Widow' by Daniel Hurst.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Daniel Hurst, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 23rd August 2023.
This is the fourth book I have read by this author. It is also the second book in 'The Doctor's Wife' series. It can be read as a standalone but I would recommend you read it after 'The Doctor's Wife' to get a better picture of the characters and storylines. I have previously read the first book in this series 'The Doctor's Wife', 'My Daughter's Boyfriend' and 'The Holiday Home'.
This novel consists of a prologue, 36 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
AN ABSOLUTELY ADDICTIVE, THRILLING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK THAT WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT UNTIL YOU TURN THE LAST PAGE!!
Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.
I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. It is the absolutely perfect follow on from 'The Doctor's Wife' and just as addictive!!! I was so glad when I found out about this book and it definitely exceeded my expectations. However I can't say I'm surprised as Daniel is an extremely talented author!! I was absolutely absorbed throughout this psychological thriller. It is filled with tension, suspense, lies, secrets, deceit, romance, love, aand omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see the twists coming at all and there were more than one!!! Just when I think everything had been worked out and things were settling down BOOM there was another bombshell!! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Daniel!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! I absolutely LOVED how it ended and I am on tenterhooks waiting for the next book in this series 'The Doctor's Mistress ' to come out. I only found out today that there was another one coming out and I am absolutely landed as when I finished this one I shouted out No Way it can't end there and although Daniel has left us on a cliffhanger at least there's another book coming. Oh and yes I did get a few strange looks when I shouted that out considering I had wireless earbuds in listening to the audiobook 😂!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! One of the others is 'The Doctor's Wife'. Daniel, You have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books!!! I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! I loved that the book is told from Fern, Alice, Greg and Tomlin's perspectives and each of their stories/chapters were perfectly weaved together to show us everything that is going on and how each of them are thinking and feeling throughout. The storyline is filled with crime, shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, and murder. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. This book is absolutely addictive and I read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved the cliff hanging explosive twist at the end that leaves you wanting more! It kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with my heart absolutely pounding throughout especially at the end! I really am looking forward to the next book by this extremely talented author. A gripping, all consuming addictive addition to an absolutely amazing series!!!
Although this is the second book in the series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened to 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrators Sarah Durham and Luke R Francis who both did an amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I have previously listened to Liz Lawler's 'The Nurse's Secret', 'The Doctors Wife' and 'The Family On Smith Street' that were all also narrated by Sarah Durham and I would highly recommend listening to or reading them all as it they re other fantastic page turners from other great authors!! I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Daniel but also to listening to more books narrated by both Sarah and Luke!
.
The characters were all strong and realistic and thanks to Daniel's absolutely fantastic writing skills and Sarah Dunham and Luke R Francis's amazing narrative skills they all come to life when you are turning the pages. I loved meeting Fern and Alice along with meeting several new characters. When I came to the end of 'The Doctors Wife' I just HAD to know what was going to happen with them both next so I was over the moon when I found out that it was going to be turned into a series and it definitely lived up to my expectations and I just KNOW that the next book in this series 'The Doctors Mistress' is going to be just as epic and I can't wait to get stuck into that too!! Daniel's creative and evocative writing skills ensured all the characters came to life and along with getting to know more about Fern and Alice I enjoyed getting to meet and learn more about the other characters which included Greg and Tomlin. Fern has become the sort of character that I love to hate and part of me wants her to get caught while the other is trying to warn her what is going on to let her get away!!! It is amazing how much emotions Daniel's characters evoke in the reader!!! It is hard to say too much about the characters as I am worried I will give too much away and I really don't want to spoil it for future readers. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all worked perfectly together to make this an addictive and explosive storyline and series!!!
This is exactly why you are one of my favourite male authors Daniel! An absolute must read author!! I cannot wait to read all your previous and future books!! Here's to your next success 🥂
Overall another absolutely heart racing, suspense filled, unputdownable addictive page turner psychological thriller filled with twists in this EPIC series!!

Another immensely enjoyable novel from Daniel Hurst, be prepared - this exceptional book will absolutely leave you wanting more!, ending, as it does, on a deliciously enticing cliff-hanger!
The sequel to The Doctor's Wife is as good if not, superior, to the utterly brilliant original title. Alice is a woman in prison for the murder of her former lover, she believes her husband has committed suicide and is adamant in her proclamations of innocence. Against all odds, a mysterious stranger passionately believes in her innocence, this supporter being a friend of her former lover, who has his suspicions as to the identity of the murderer cast in an altogether different direction. He will stop at nothing to get to the truth.
Fern is the Doctors widow, she is living the high life due to a substantial inheritance following her bereavement. She
is enjoying a new relationship with a handsome man she meets in a bar, she believes this man to be a breath of fresh air after the deception she experienced from her deceased unfaithful husband. Has Fern struck gold, or is it all too good to be true?! In this fantastic novel all is revealed in delightful detail!
I couldn't wait to delve into this novel at every given opportunity! The writing, in the unique, somewhat formal, style that is becoming trademark 'Daniel Hurst' conveys this story with suspension and drama and its fair share of intrigue. This is a book I cant recommend highly enough!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.
The Doctor's Widow is the second book which follows The Doctor's Wife. This one picks up about four months after the first book. I think you will want to read the first one before this one. This can be a stand-alone read, but there is so much more to enjoy if you read one after the other. There is a lot of history that is replayed but each book is so fantastic that you won't want to miss a second of either of the books. The book is told from several points of view, so you get that character's perspective.
Fern is driving around in her new car, but she admits it is losing its sparkle. Now after picking up the keys to her new house, she has something to look forward to. Having used the funds from her deceased husband's insurance policy, she is looking forward to making a new life in style. She also has a new boyfriend, "Roger", who is keeping her taken care of in the bedroom. Her secrets are safe and life is good.
"Roger" is keeping a secret from Fern. He happens to be a friend of her late husband. He is sure that she is responsible for his death and is going undercover to find the truth of what happened to him.
Fern is under the misconception that he believes she is just a lonely but rich widow. One night he says something that makes Fern think he knows the truth. Roger tries to fix it but she is now curious and more careful.
Roger throws a surprise party for Fern with her friends and family at a hotel. Fern laps up all the attention she receives but she overindulges, and Roger takes her upstairs where he hopes she will spill all the details now that she is drunk. But who will be the victor in this intense fight to keep their own secrets.
When I started reading The Doctor's Widow, I wasn't sure if I had read the prior book, but everything seemed so familiar. It didn't take long for everything to fall into place. This one is a gripping psychological thriller that keeps the reader turning the pages. There does seem to be a little question and the end that leaves you to hope that there is another story that picks up after this one.
Such a good book! Read the doctors wife first and then immediately the doctors widow. I encourage reading them like that. I enjoyed the twists and turns and hope for more to come!
The Doctor’s Widow was a great sequel. I am ready for the next book. I really loved the characters
Now, before going into this book, I hadn’t realised it was book two of The Doctor’s Wife series. While it can function perfectly well as a standalone novel thanks to some exposition at the beginning, you do need to read book one The Doctor’s Wife for better backstory, character development, and context. This I have done and will review that book soon. I will do my best not to throw out spoilers here for those who want to read book one first. The story is told from the perspectives of the main characters. It is fast paced and I felt I had to read on to find out what was going to happen as it twisted it’s way to the inevitable climax.
Fern’s life may come crashing around her as she worries that Roger knows something about her past so she frantically works to hold her life together. I kind of liked Fern. She’s been through a lot and has been left a little jaded by the experience. She is understandably a very different woman now, and that affected how I felt toward her. Empathy started to wane slightly but I was still rooting for her.
Overall, I think this is an improvement on The Doctor’s Wife and I recommend it to any readers of psychological thrillers albeit with the caveat that you should read book one first. I gave The Doctor’s Widow, by Daniel Hurst, 5 stars and look forward to reading the third book The Doctor’s Mistress.
I am usually advocating that books are stand alones, but not this one. You definitely need to read The Doctor’s Wife to appreciate this one. But the first one is the series was good and worth a read. Daniel Hurst has quickly joined my list of popcorn thriller author’s I love to read or even better listen to. Short, quick paced books with short chapters that are twisty and engaging.
In this one, the story of Alice and Fern continues and basically picks up where The Doctor’s Wife left off. I really loved the cat and mouse game between Fern and her new lover. Or is he. I think Fern is the character I most like to hate since Nick and Amy Dunne of Gone Girl. While I was never sure exactly where this one was headed, it had less twists than the last one, but I was just as engaged. Does she continue to get away with being a black widow or will she finally see consequences for her actions? I honestly don’t know whether to cheer her on or root for her to get caught.
And I sure hope that the author is well on his way to finishing the next book in the series because this one ended on a cliffhanger. My only complaint of the book.
And while I enjoy reading the author’s books, I love listening to them. They are a perfect backdrop for a walk or cleaning or just about anything. Luke R. Francis and Sarah Durham do a terrific job bringing the story to life and letting it shine. I did not want to stop listening.
As spooky season is almost upon us, this series is the perfect way to kick it off. You won’t be disappointed listening to this series.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC, unfortunately this wasn’t for me. I was concerned at first starting this series with book two, but I didn’t need to worry because the author basically retold the first book in the first part. This made for a really slow start, as well as, the writing style in general throughout the book made it go slow. The sentence format I just used in this review of ‘statement, because, statement’ was how the author set everything up. Hurst did a lot of telling the audience rather than showing through the writing style, which made the story very slow and uninteresting. I found myself not caring how the story progressed and did not find it to be very thriller-esque. Hurst explained everything going on so quickly that there wasn’t anything for me to be surprised by or trying to figure out. I also found a lot of the “surprise” elements very random/unbelievable. For example, the journalist seeing Greg visiting Alice. How would that journalist not have gotten caught? Is there no security at England prisons? Another example, both women being pregnant by the end. Why? That whole storyline of Fern purposely getting pregnant by Greg was so random and added nothing to the plot. Ultimately, this felt very early stage draft rather than thrilling final product. There’s substance here, but it’s buried by the fluffy writing.
