This was a sequel to The Doctor’s Wife continuing Fern’s story. I liked it, but didn’t love it. While I generally like a follow up book, I think the first one was great as it stood. This didn’t seem to have much substance to it, and definitely wasn’t believable. Most if the details were just filler. Overall it was an ok read but. not as good as some of his other books!
Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Bookoutoure Publishing for the advance reader copy. This is my honest review. 3.5/5⭐️
So I read this book before even getting to read the first part of the series. This book was very good, lots of twists!! The ending was a huge shock to me!! I’m just wondering if there will be a 3rd book to the series because of how it left off!! But I definitely will have to go and read the first book just to make sense of all that has taken place in this book.
The king of twists, Daniel Hurst, returns following The Doctor's Wife (#1) with the followup in the Doctor's Wife series #2, THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW.
A doctor's wife gets away with murder, and now someone is on to her. Will he attain the evidence to put her away before The Black Widow strikes again in this latest wicked game of cat-and-mouse?
We met Fern in the last book—a dangerous, manipulative murderer - a psycho femme fatale out for revenge, killing her Doctor husband Drew because he was unfaithful, framing his lover, Alice— now in prison. Alice's husband, Rory, got too close, and she took care of him as collateral damage.
Now she has met Roger, a new guy at a bar. He is handsome, charming, attentive, and caring. Her friends and family like him. Fern was not planning on getting hooked on another man so soon after the murder of her husband. She does not want people to get suspicious. Roger is not a doctor; he is in sales with little money.
On the other hand, Fern has a lot of money since she collected it from Drew's life insurance. She is buying new cars, new clothes, and an expensive mansion with all the perks in an area with celebrities, the rich and famous. She is planning her parties and social events. She is delusional and crazy.
However, she does not know Roger is not his real name. It is Greg. Greg is a former cop, and he was a friend of Drews. He knows Fern killed Drew and set up Alice. Now all he needs is proof. To get close to her, get her drunk, make sure she trusts him, loosen her tongue, and record her.
Will Roger/Greg get the evidence before she strikes again? Or is he in danger? In the meantime, Alice is in prison, hoping someone will gather enough evidence to clear her name and release her.
Detective Tomlin is back on the case, determined to track down Fern so Alice can be released.
While the dangerous game of cat and mouse is played out, Alice and Fern each have new shocking surprises, leading us to a cliffhanger for possibly a #3 Doctor's Wife.
As always, Hurst keeps the twists coming with sociopath narcissistic characters that are shallow, greedy, and think they deserve it all, above the law. Fans will be looking forward to the next in the series to hopefully see Fern behind bars for good for some karma and justice.
Told from POV: Fern, Alice, Greg, and Tomlin. I hoped for more dark humor, as in Hurst's past books, to liven up Fern, Greg, Alice, and Tomlin's characters, especially Fern.
THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW is not a complex plot —it is more of a fun popcorn thriller for entertainment purposes and not to be taken too seriously. There were not a lot of likable characters here. From greed, obsession, lies, deceit, and murder. For fans of Valerie Keogh's The Widow.
I read the e-book and listened to the audiobook narrated by Sarah Durham and Luke R. Francis for an entertaining performance for all voices.

Great read !! Gripping. I was unable to put down and read in one day! Daniel Hurst is amazing. The story is the second book after The Doctora Wife, and follows Fern, now widowed, as she tries to move on. She has so many secrets!!! Loved this book and recommend it ! Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc in exchange for my honest review !!
I read the doctors wife book one and enjoyed it. The ending was ambiguous and I didn’t realize Hurst planned a sequel but here it is. Enjoyable but a little redundant and padded.
Solid book 2 in this series. I binged book 1 - The Doctors Wife which dropped a bomb at the end. Book 2 picked right up. This book was a binge worthy read (literally one day). The twists and turns didn’t pack as great of a punch as in book 1 but none the less this book was very entertaining and easy to read.
I really enjoy Daniel’s books, the plots are always well thought out and original. I realised I hadn’t read the first of this 2 book mini series so read the first (The doctor’s wife) before reading this one, although I think it would still work as a standalone.
As with all the rest of his books this was an enjoyable read.
I enjoyed this quick read. I wish the ending gave us a little more resolution though and not end a total cliff hanger. I like this series though and am looking forward to #3
I read the first book of the series “The Doctors Wife” in February so was excited to read this one!
I find Fern so likeable as a character although I’d never want to cross her myself. Despite what she’s done I always find myself hoping that she will get away with it and am cheering her on from the sidelines.
I have an immediate mistrust and dislike of Roger, because the only thing as bad as a cheater is a flat out liar.
I’ve never been drawn to Alice either, and find myself pleased whenever something negative happens to her.
Hoping for another book (please confirm Dan 😂). The epilogue definitely left me wondering what is next
THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW, was a great story to keep me entertained for the day. I liked that it somewhat summarized what happened at the end of book 1 in the series to refresh my memory. As the story continued, I was not surprised to see Fern get her way, once again. She's a very unlikable character and I think she will eventually get what is coming to her. I found it interesting that Greg/Roger cared so much to get involved with Fern in the first place. Sometimes it is just better to keep out of other people's business. I really didn't care for Alice either, but I was happy to see she got some justice. The twist involving Alice leads me to believe there will be a third book. I am looking forward to seeing what will happen with both of these characters. If you enjoy a good thriller series, I think you'll enjoy this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my gifted copy.

Oh my gosh! Addicting does not even describe this!! Make sure you read “The Doctors Wife” first!
I am ready for book 3’.. there will be a book 3 right?
I will admit that I did not read the 1st book in this series but I was able to follow along just fine. This book took me awhile to really get into (really until Greg or shall I say roger and fern were well into dating) but suddenly I was super invested! I found myself turning page after page wanting to know what happened to Greg, Fern, alice…. I was bummed that it ended on a cliffhanger but am anticipating the next book to pick right up where it left off! I also did see Fern’s pregnancy ahead of time but was pleasantly surprised when it was revealed that Alice was also pregnant. All in all I thought this was a well-done enjoyable read with just the right amount of suspense!
I enjoyed this book greatly. I have never loved a character so much in the first book only to hate them in the second but that’s the case with Fern. I hated the chain of events she set off and then for it to end that way! Omg lol let’s just say I can’t wait for the next book!
I did not read the first installment in the series, The Doctor’s Wife, but I did enjoy The Doctor’s Widow. It follows Fern, who is not exactly a likable character, in her journey after becoming a widow. I must say Daniel Hurst did a good job about making the reader hate this character. As I couldn’t put the book down waiting for her to fail haha. It did have some good twist and turns that were unfortunately predictable but good. I definitely saw the ending coming, but I’m excited there may be possibly another book. All in all I give the book 3 stars. It was captivating but predictable for a thriller. I adore Daniel Hurts books and will definitely picking up The Doctor’s Wife soon for more insight into Fern and Alice.
Thank you, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for allowing me to read this ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a decent sequel and I really enjoyed the multiple points of view. Having the detective’s, Alice’s, Fern’s and Greg’s perspectives throughout the book really added to the story.
Not as strong as the first book but based on the ending this book is simply a bridge to #3
Daniel Hurst's The Doctor's Widow, a gripping sequel to The Doctor's Wife, follows Fern, the cunning widow of Dr. Drew Devlin, as she enjoys her newfound wealth, unaware of her new lover Roger's hidden agenda. The book skillfully weaves alternating perspectives, offering insight into Fern's growth as a character while introducing intriguing connections between the narrative threads. Despite some minor pacing issues and occasionally predictable twists, the story's captivating blend of suspense, intertwined plotlines, and Fern's enigmatic personality make it a compelling psychological thriller that leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment.
Thank you for providing me a copy of this treasure. I want to say that the book 1 is far better than this. In my own opinion, it does not need any sequel. I wish that the twist should be less predictable.
As soon as I finished The Doctor’s Wife , which is book #1, I immediately started The Doctor’s Widow which is book #2. A great sequel to the first book and I’d say it was just as action packed as the first book. Gripping till the end. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published August 23, 2023.
I liked this book. Didn't knew about the first book in the series, but it's completely different plot. It Starts after Fern killed her husband. Alice was framed for it but Greg, was finding answers. Fern is manipulative and a psychopath killer. Although it's fast paced but feels confusing at times. It ends in cliffhanger. So, next book will continue the story. With multiple point of views it seems like a nice time pass read. Interesting and intriguing for sure.
The story starts with the main character Fern, the widow of of wealthy physician Dr. Drew, posing as the grieving wife while splurging his life insurance money on luxury cars, designer clothes and a new lavish home. Implying she killed her husband and possibly framed his mistress Alice who was convicted and sent to prison for the crime.
Then we have Greg, tennis partner and casual friend to the late Dr. Drew, who is obsessed with proving Fern is responsible for Drew’s death and falls in love with Alice while she is incarcerated.
Considering Greg was not an even close friend of Drew’s and had never met Fern or Alice prior to Drew’s death, his obsession with the case and how far he was willing to go to prove his theory without any evidence to support it didn’t make sense in my opinion.
I loved the concept of the cheating spouse and revenge plot and the different character point of views per chapter but found myself wanting more details of the crime, the investigation and the supporting characters.
I did dive into this without realizing it is a sequel to The Doctors Wife which I haven’t read. Though this was a quick read and I was able to follow as a stand alone, I may have enjoyed this more if I would have read the prequel first.
Thank you to the Daniel Hurst, Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in return for my voluntary and honest review.
