I hate how much I disliked this book. The whole book seemed rush. For me it was very bland. Alot of parts were way too obvious and most of the story was very far fetched. There was so much repetitive content that I started getting very irritated having to hear which ever character going over things again. About half way through I wanted to give up. There are just too many plot holes for me and never in a million years cod all of this take place in such a short time. Dont even get me started how out of nowhere it jumps ahead 18 months. I was really looking forward to this one and was severely let down 😕
I’ve come to a conclusion that I love destination thrillers. It’s like going on a vacation without having to pack or pay anything. I really enjoyed the story. It was very atmospheric in at times a little scary.
I was a little disappointed with this book. It had all of the ingredients to be a great thriller but unfortunately, I guessed pretty much all of the twists towards the start of the book. Everything seemed to move quite slowly, and then all of a sudden it was done? There was a twist at the end which I expected but everything just seemed so convenient, like the FMC had planned everything perfectly so that nothing could go wrong (which it didn't).
2.5 rounded.

I had high hopes for this book after reading the description, but for me it was a big let down. The story follows mark and abby, who own a B&B in a secluded, cliffy area. Lottie, Tim and Chelsea book the hotel for a 3 week stay. "Secrets" were uncovered and lottie and tim booked the hotel for a reason.
There were so many plot holes to the story, the revenge wasn't thought out properly and all of the characters were dislikable. There was no twist and the ending was just meh- convineint much? And abby using tim? Where did that come from? Why didn't she simply just divorce him and take the cash & run?
It could've been better but it wasn't really much of a story, let alone thriller
Everyone has their own secrets and agendas in this Maine coast thriller. This medium paced novel follows a standard thriller outline.
I wish the pace would have been a little faster, the plot would have developed more evenly, and the twists would have been a bit more unexpected.
This domestic thriller had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. There was so much suspense and drama. It is set in the winter months in a secluded bed & breakfast during a blizzard.
Love this author and was excited to read her new book the hotel! This is an amazing book, just buy it, and sit back and enjoy the ride. A massive five shiny stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A family-run B&B hosts guests who rent out the whole place. They claim they've stayed before but the owners don't remember them. A bad storm huddles them together without electricity and things go from mysterious to suspenseful.
Shiner did so well with this. I loved the buildup, slowly creeping up to the explosion. Lots of great tension and characters you love to hate.
"The Hotel" by Emily Shiner is an exciting psychological thriller that will keep you on your toes until the very last page. This is the second book by the author that I have read, and I am looking forward to reading more of her books.
The book follows the owners of B&B, Mark and Abby. Abby runs the B&B, while Mark supplements their income by working as a handyman. They have been married for 20 years and have a two-year-old son. To increase their depleting income and to attract more guests to the B&B, Abby offers a huge discount, and Lottie and Tim Rowes bite. They rent out the entire hotel for three weeks and come with their 16-year-old daughter, Chelsea. However, this vacation is not what it appears on the surface. The Rowes claim they have been there before, but Abbey doesn't recall that.
Add to that, Mark is acting strange and seems to be hiding something. In fact, each character has an agenda and a plan of his own. But, as the saying goes, "Man plans, and God laughs". A severe blizzard leaves them stranded and without electricity, and this is where things turn bad. Odd incidents keep popping up, nerves are frayed, and tensions rise. As secrets are revealed, upheaval takes the stage.
I loved the tale, the writing, and the atmospheric settings. The dark atmosphere was well-sketched and convincing to boot. The tension builds up nicely, leading to a final showdown and a somewhat satisfying ending. Not all threads were fully explained, though, and some closure would have been nice.
The pace of the story was slow at some points, but there is enough tension to keep your interest. It is written in the first person from the perspectives of the four main characters and alternates between them. I liked the way the book was executed. It is full of twists and turns, and the building of the suspense is superb. While I guessed some of the secrets, which you can call predictable, some twists caught me by surprise. I didn't like any of the characters besides the kid, and some actions (especially Abby's) were unbelievable to me. My liking for one of the characters pretty soon turned into dislike, but I still rooted for them. That said, I still enjoyed the book and definitely recommend it to lovers of the genre.
* Thank you NetGalley and (publisher) for the opportunity to read this arc. All opinions are my own.
Wow, this was definitely the book of the summer that I could not put down. I absolutely loved all of the twists and turns in this story. This story had me guessing every second and still shocked at the end. This was my first book by Emily Shiner but it definitely won’t be my last. I appreciated the character development and how each chapter we learned just a little bit more about each character. I felt as though this was a quick read and one you don’t want to miss! Thank you netgalley and publisher for the advanced copy. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed and the story was engaging. I recommend that others try this book as well. Well done!
A twisty and suspenseful read which hooks you from the beginning.
The author has an easy writing style with good balance between plot and character development.
All the characters were unlikeable with hidden agendas and even though I worked out the first plot twist, it did not detract from the book's satisfying conclusion. Recommended.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley UK for the ARC.
This book begins with what you think is a lovely story about a little, loving family who own an amazing hotel in the middle of nowhere. It soon turns into something more sinister. Lies and deceit soon come to the surface and the book begins to get very interesting. A well written book that you will enjoy and will not be able to put down when you start it.
The Hotel was a quick, twisty read that makes the reader feel isolated and fills them with chills and not just from the winter setting.
An isolated B&B is the setting for this atmospheric novel. The family who owns it is excited when one family rents the whole building out for three weeks, with hope that it will help them with financial trouble. But, they may bring other troubles along with their suitcases.
Twists and scares abound in this novel, though they may be predictable they are still fun.
Told from the perspective characters gave Shiner the opportunity to flush the characters out a bit more.
Overall, this was a quick fun read. I didn't mind the predictability, but if that bothers you this may not be the book for you.
I definitely will be looking up a few more of Shiner's books.
Look for this one in September 2023.
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This is my second Emily Shiner book and I will be adding her to my must read list! As someone who reads a lot of thrillers, I hate when I can guess an ending to a book. With both books by her I’ve read, I’ve been shocked by the endings and that is so refreshing.
Abby and Mark, along with their 2 year old son, own a B&B in rural Maine. Their B&B has not been doing well financially lately so Abby puts a promotional advertisement up on social media to draw in guests. She gets a reply from a woman who books out the entire B&B for 3 weeks to enjoy with her husband and teenage daughter. Abby is thrilled that this could be the answer to their financial struggles. Mark seems wary of the family…
There were many twists and turns that kept me guessing, and kept my theories changing on who had what secret and what was going to happen.

I was up way too late because I could not put down The Hotel. Emily Shiner has written a true rollercoaster of a tale that had me exclaiming out loud as I read. This book is a serious psychological thriller that had me in its grip for the entirety.
Mark and Abby run a lovely bed and breakfast on the coast of Maine. It has always been Abby’s dream and they have opened their lives to the guests that come to stay for almost a decade, but financially they have had some tough years. Abby comes up with a promotion to bring some footsteps through the door and is thrilled when the Rowe family books a stay. However, not all is what it seems when the Rowe family shows up and Abby begins to worry that she has made a mistake in opening her home to them. She soon becomes concerned for the safety of her young son when some troubling situations occur. To make matters worse, a terrible blizzard descends, effectively isolating Abby and her family with their unsettling guests.
The Hotel is well written, smart without losing its readability. The narration shifts between characters throughout the story and each of these characters is nicely fleshed out with their own tone and voice, making it easy to follow. The changing perspectives function as a tool to both illuminate certain aspects of the plot as well as to demonstrate the unreliability of the characters, making for an enjoyable and edge of your seat read.
This story kept me guessing until the very end. The twists and turns in the plot are plentiful and I felt like I was trying to navigate a white-out blizzard never knowing which of the characters I could trust. The story begins with a leisurely pace, but as the tension in the story builds that pace accelerates to break-neck speed. This book is an exciting read, exactly what I like in a thriller. There is a good balance between plot and character development, spine-tingling scenes, and action. This is a great book of fans of Alice Hunter and Freida McFadden. Five out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me this book for review. All opinions I have shared here are my own.
This book has me gripping to every page. I could not put this down so I finished it in one day. I really enjoyed the alternating points of view. Just when you think you have it figured out the twist comes and you do not see it coming. If you are a fan of thrillers you need to add this to your TBR.

Best of 2023.
Abby & Mark have a quiet Bed and Breakfast in coastal Maine, but business isn't what it used to be. So naturally Abby takes matters into her own hands and decided to run a sale. Almost immediately a family bites and books a stay for 3 weeks. Abby thought her prayers were answered but who did she just welcome into her home? And for 3 weeks for that matter?
I loved it very much. This author has done it again. I won't spoil this for you just go and read it I adored the ending of this book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy.
Emily Shiner is always a no brainer. Her books keep you guessing and completey. She has the ability to make you think you know what's going to happen but then she pulls the rug out from under you. She is always a one click for me.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I did read this in one sitting.
The Hotel is a creepy thriller following multiple POVs that have something to hide. I really did enjoy getting so many points of view in this book, especially considering all of the characters were troubling.
My complaint with this book is that it was pretty predictable and there was absolutely nothing in the plot that surprised me. I thought the pacing of the story was great and I did crush through this in an evening. This would make a great fall read, curled up around the fire with a cup of tea!
Check this one out if you like thrillers, suspense, books with multiple POVs, and cozy BNBs!
