Wow, this book was not what I expected! Abby and Mark run a bed and breakfast in a remote, snowy area. Looking to bring in some much needed money, they advertise at a discounted rate and a family snatches up the entire place for 3 weeks. Sounds perfect but it quickly takes a dark turn as the family that has rented it has secrets and we soon find out that Abby and Mark do as well! A quick, fast paced thriller that will keep you surprised chapter to chapter!
It has taken me a while to write my review, because I'm still trying to get my head around all of the twists. Honestly, everytime that I thought I knew the direction of the storyline, Shiner expertly pulled another twist that I did not see coming. And after reading two of her books in a row, I should know what to look out for but I was so caught up in the fast-moving storyline as I gobbled up the book and was shocked each time.
The Hotel is another fast-paced, stand alone novel by Emily Shiner that begins in an idyllic sounding hotel, on the outskirts of a small town.
But it's not long before the reader discovers that each protoganist has their own secrets as they narrate different chapters. The reader is party to their thoughts and underhand planning, as each member of the story, seems to have conflicting plans. And are working against each other with a distinct undercurrent of fear building up. But can the reader really rely on the information provided by each character? Probably not!
Step into the world of The Hotel and enjoy the twists
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this advanced copy. Another astounding thriller from Emily Shiner! I was nervous the whole time (which we know is good in a thriller), and new something was going to happen but didn't expect what actually happened! Also, there's a twist at the end. The book would be an amazing movie!
Mark and I pride ourselves on giving visitors to our hotel, high on the rugged Maine cliffs with views of the ocean, a vacation they won't forget. But the Rowes are strangely over-familiar when they arrive with their teenage daughter, The wife puts a hand on Mark's forearm and her husband meets my eyes with a knowing look as I hold my little son tight. They gush that they loved their previous stay here.... But I'm certain I've never seen them before.
Emily Shiner is quickly climbing up my favourite authors list. Set at a secluded bed and breakfast during the winter months, a blizzard sets in. Abby and Mark are our hosts in Oyster, Maine. A family book the entire B&B for three weeks. Everyone has secrets. Soon after the Rowe family arrive, there are some strange occurrences take place. The story is told from the four main characters perspectives. This is a fast-paced captivating read. The characters are well developed.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #EmilyShiner for my ARC of #TheHotel in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Hotel by Emily Shiner. I am leaving a review voluntarily so that others may read my opinion of the book.
I chose to read this book because I had read another one by the same author (The Wife in the Photo) that I had enjoyed. The book had many twists to it and I was unable to figure out how the story would end. It was a complete shock to me. This story was fun and kept me engaged throughout the novel. This author is very talented and I enjoy her writing style. She is able to create a lot of tension. I gave this book a 4 out of 5 star rating. I would definitely recommend this book to other fans of the thriller genre.
Oh my god! My heart is still pounding from reading this book!
This is one of the scariest, gripping books I have ever read. Let me tell you from that very first page I was hooked. I honestly was on the edge of my seat throughout this book, I had no idea what was going to happen next and everytime I thought I knew, then something completely different and shocking happened!
This book is frighteningly good! If you love a good psychological thriller then this is your book!
I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced and when I thought I had something figured out, I was wrong.
Abby and her husband, Mark, run a B&B out of their home and they seem to have hit a slump with getting bookings. Abby decides to run a special for those who book with them, she is happy to get a reservation from the Rowe family for a 3 week stay. She was excited to let Mark know but there Mark is skeptic about it and isn't certain it's the right thing to do. When the Rowe family arrives she feels like Mark is hiding something, that he may know them somehow even though he says he doesn't. A blizzard hits and everyone is snowed in together but weird things start happening and Abby feels she must protect her young son Henry at all costs. She will protect him no matter what she has to do, but how far will she have to go?
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and author for my ARC!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advance ebook copy!
Abby, Mark, and their little boy, Henry, run a B&B which they live in. They are having money issues and run a promotional ad that attracts Lottie, Tim, and Chelsea. This family rents out the entire B&B to themselves for 3 weeks when a storm comes through and snows the two families in. Tensions are high. Everyone in the house has their own secrets and motives for being there. None of this was random at all.
This was a thrilling page turner. Every time I thought I had it figured out, there was a new twist! Be on the lookout for this book in September!
I really could not get into this book. It wasn't that much of a thriller to me. I also did not care for the characters at all. I was hoping it would get better the further into it I got, but sadly, it did not. It's too bad since I've really liked all the other books I've read by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Well, at first the book was a bit slow and repetitive for me. But it picked up and while I did guess one little twist, I didn't see the other twists coming ! It was the second book I read from this author and it won't be the last. I like her writing style !
Abby and Mark own a B&B up a mountain on the skirts of the picturesque town of Oyster, which hasn't been doing well lately so Abby has the idea to launch a special offer to entice people to book. Abby is shocked to see that a family instantly book the entire B&B for a three week period. Abby soon regrets accepting the booking not long after their stay starts and something feels off, what is it about Lottie, Tim and their teenage daughter Chelsea that just isn't sitting right with her?
I hate to say it, but if this wasn't my first ARC, I probably would have shelfed this book and not finished it. I found myself having to go back multiple times to see if I'd missed pages and my iPad had skipped a chapter as I felt like the scene wasn't set very well. It's not very often I have to reread paragraphs to set the scene right in my head, but I had to do it enough with this book that the feeling stuck with me. In some chapters I was really confused about how the characters got to where they were and even what was happening. It was also confusing that some parts were made to feel like 'big moments' to then not be expanded on or mentioned again in the book, a specific scene that sticks in my head is the 'sliding doors,' no context was given to where they lead to and there was no further conversation about them being open, so why was this portrayed as such a chapter cliffend? A lot of emphasis was placed on other things in the book that didn't really correlate to the storyline and then the plot twist felt a bit rushed and too much all at once. I also feel like parts that should have been huge were kind of glossed over and character reactions were next to none for what had happened. There was also no consistency to the chapters, being most from Abby's point of view, with a few from Lottie and Mark and a couple from Chelsea then none from Tim. I think a couple of chapters from Tim would have brought the book together a bit better. I also can't understand why the book is called 'The Hotel' when the business they own is a B&B and is never referred to as a hotel. I've given this book a two star rating as I think overall the book had a good plot, I just don't think it was executed very well.
Wow! What a page turner, keeps you at the edge of your seat. It has plenty of twists and turns throughout with a brilliant ending. The characters were great, the story itself was full of suspense and the style of writing was perfect. I have read a lot of books by this author and I have throughly enjoyed them all.. looking forward to the next one out. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes reading psychological thrillers.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this in exchange for a honest review.
This book was just okay, I would give it a 3.3/5. I liked that the chapters were short and fast moving but the writing was a bit basic and I was able to predict most of the twists. I expected a bit more from the ending and think it could have been elaborated on. Overall I would be open to reading other books from this author but it wasn’t my favorite.
I really hate giving a negative review but I just did not enjoy this book. I thought the writing was very basic, disjointed and repetitive and the story had no flow. It was extremely predictable and I didn’t like any of the characters and their actions didn’t make any sense to me. I’m sure the author’s intent was for the reader to be sympathetic for Abby but I just couldn’t stand her and thought her motivations for everything were completely unbelievable.
I’m sure some readers will appreciate and enjoy the wildly over-the-top nature of this book but unfortunately I did not. And maybe I’m just being nit picky but why is the book called “The Hotel?” The main couple own a B&B, which isn’t really the same thing.
*Thank you to the publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an eARC for review!*
I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I really enjoyed this book. the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat.
I enjoyed the story, and liked how It was hard to guess who was responsible for everything that was happening. It was easy and fun to read. There were some scary moments, but it felt mostly like a mystery. I liked the ending and was mildly surprised. Some parts throughout the story were a little predictable but I think it was because we had multiple points of few, we could put some of the pieces together pretty easily. I wish there were a few more chapters at the end so I could see how things played out.
Holy wow!!!! Couldn’t stop reading! Truly page turning. So many unexpected twists and turns. The ending was wild. Bravo!!! I will be reading anything Emily writes. If you love a great thriller, you’ll love this book.
A mother gets trapped at a cliff side hotel with her husband keeping secrets from her.
I didn’t love the writing style here. I thought the story was pretty good but the writing took me away from it.
This book was everything! Having started it in the morning I had it finished by the afternoon, it’s an enticing read where each chapter keeps you hooked wanting to get to the depths of the mystery that Shiner builds up throughout. A must-read
Abby and Mark own a bed and breakfast (not a hotel!?) in secluded Oyster, Maine. Business has been slow so Abby comes up with an idea for a promotion to draw past visitors back. A family of three books the entire b&b for three weeks during a severe snowstorm. As they all end up stranded indoors it turns out everyone has their own secrets and intentions.
I enjoyed this book, especially how atmospheric it was. However, I found most of the reveals to be pretty obvious. In the beginning of the book I found Abby & Mark to be fairly likable but by the end there was not one likable character aside from their baby. And maybe that’s okay for this type of thriller, it allows for more tension between everyone. The one thing i didn’t like was that there were not enough explanations for certain aspects of each of the characters. Overall though, it was an entertaining read & I would definitely read more by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
