The Baghdad Betrayal is a really good thriller by Robert Charles.
Former SAS Captain, Mark Falcon, is now a freelance journalist reporting on military issues in the Middle East. Great cast of characters, good plot, and a lot of action will keep you on edge.
I look forward to reading more by the author and would like to
thank Sapere Books and NetGalley for the ARC. I highly recommend
this book!

The Baghdad Betrayal by Robert Charles is a ripping yarn set in Iraq at the start of ‘the invasion’ and focuses on the UK SAS’ involvement in securing UK citizens and interests. Mark Falcon (ex-SAS, now ‘journalist’ happens to be the right person in the right place to do a favour for his former boss, Colonel Harry Killian who needs to rescue an Iraqi military defector. ‘The West’ is poised to invade so Falcon’s window for the rescue/extraction is small.
Falcon is also to get British businessman’s son out, but, because it seems a story always needs a romantic thread, young Richard Campbell won’t leave without his Iraqi girlfriend, but she won’t leave without her father’s permission and her brother won’t let her anyway and as it turns out, the father is also the defector. Time because scarce as the invasion starts, Campbell and his girlfriend are captured by the Iraqi secret police and then and what’s with the defector who made it safely to London sneaking himself back into Iraq. It’s money of course.
This is a story about the old stories of UK business tycoons and their military associations as much as it is about religious and political (and money) intrigue in Iraq. It’s an exciting story, would make a great movie and is well worth reading if only to reinforce the cynical view that all wars are really about money. Highly recommended.

A fast moving story line, with plenty of action.
Not an author I had read before, but one I will keep an eye on in the future.

THE BAGHDAD BETRAYAL by ROBERT CHARLES is a fast paced thriller that takes place in Iraq after Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. In the ensuing turmoil, Mark Falcon is asked by Harry Killian to help get Colonel Abu Ben Karzani out of the country to London, and also to find Richard Campbell and get him out as well, before war breaks out. Things, however do not go according to plan…..
The situation in Iraq at the time, with their mad tuler and the members of the Mukhabarat who serve him blindly, is well documented, and we see their cruelty and the bravery of Mark and his group of soldiers who hold nothing back in their fight to ptotect their charges…..
I like the way that the ancient historical sites are mentioned, giving richness to the story.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good political thriller.
