This is book 5 in the Jemima Jago series. I have not read them all but had no trouble keeping track of characters and eventsfrom previous books. Jemima is heading to the Bay View to help out with the annual bake off. Jem is going to sample the cakes but when the judge and MC dies tasting the first cake she decides to investigate. Especially since the hurricane is keeping the police away. There is the customary twists and turns but a fun read.

The 5th book in the series and probably the best one yet.

After a fiery argument with boyfriend Rhys, Jem marches out of the house to stay with her friend Pauley, who is busy organising a bake off competition at a new luxury hotel on the Isles of Scilly. She persuades Jem to help her, with the lure of a stay in the hotel.

Unfortunately when a bad storm hits the island, the contestants, guests and judges are stranded at the hotel whilst the storm blows over. When a dislikable judge drops dead seemingly from food poisoning, and a near fatal poisoning attack is made on the local detective, Jem takes it upon herself to investigate before anyone else dies.

There are plenty of red herrings in this story to keep you reading.

Jem and her friends are a really likeable bunch of characters. This is a really enjoyable series.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book. This is my honest review

This is the first book I've read in the Jemima Jago series, but now I'll have to go back to the start. This is such a fun read. There's a quirky cast of characters, interesting writing, and a main character I like. When Jem thinks, Februarys were made for hot toddies, overstuffed armchairs, and books, I know we could be friends!

The identity of the killer truly surprised me and yet felt believable too. The plot structure and writing style somehow reminds me a bit of a good old-fashioned Agatha Christie novel. Lots of little clues and red herrings leading to a satisfying resolution.

It's always fun to discover a new series I really like, even if it means backtracking!

A storm is brewing and Jem Jago, the Scilly Sleuth, is trapped safely in a hotel watching a Bake Off compeititon when the judge dies on stage from poison. Will the killer go free once the lockdown ends...?
A Death at Bay View Hotel is the fifth book in the Jem Jago murder mystery series.
The book starts with the death on stage and then goes back in time to show the events leading up to the poisoning. Jem has had some personal issues to deal with and needs some space so agrees to join her friend Pauley at the competiton. But she never imagined being trapped there with a killer!
There is quite a claustrophobic atmosphere as the hotel is locked down with many people who don't want to be there. Hack has had an allergic reaction so gives Jem his blessing to investigate on his behalf. The victim seems to have made a lot of enemies which means there are plenty of people for Jem (and us!) to suspect.
The tone of the book is lighthearted and there are little snappy comments that made me smile. Although written in the third person, I felt that the personality of the main characters is brought to life by the almost intimate style of writing. I admit that I struggled to connect with Jem in the first book in the series but now I really like her and her escapades.
A Death at Bay View Hotel is an enjoyable and entertaining cosy murder mystery.

First let me say, I am new to this series and author, but the blurb sounded good so why not give it a whirl. I was not disappointed. Yes, I found it slow in places, but the overall story was really good. I think this would have been more enjoyable to listen to instead of reading. I thought the story/plot was interesting and the characters a hoot.

A Death at Bay View Hotel is the 5th book in the Jemima Jago Mystery Series. This series just keeps getting better. I love Jemima's character, the setting and descriptions are delightful and the story kept me guessing throughout. Read the whole series, you will not be disappointed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.

Book 5 of interesting English cozy mystery novel.
The novel is set in Cornwall in the UK. Jemima (Jem) Jago, librarian, is developing her amateur sleuthing skills on the side when she gets fired from the library. You feel Jem's uncertainty and frustration as she job-searches over the Christmas holidays; and having an unsupportive partner in Rhys to boot. So, on a blustery morning, Jem finds herself storming over to stay with her best friend/ erstwhile roommate, Pauley, who announces that storm or no storm, she's off to MC the annual Valentine's Day baking contest at the Bay View Hotel on the Isles Of Scilly. Jem is soon also heading on a ferry amid a hurricane.

Emma Jameson builds a strong sense of place. The remote Isles Of Scilly and the luxurious Bay View Hotel - with its bar, reception, and conference rooms - become characters in the novel. The author also quickly establishes a cast of engaging characters. As the novel is my first in the series by Emma Jameson, I was getting to know Jemima Jago and her sleuthing life. This book makes me want to read the earlier books in the series. There are plenty of twists and turns, with enough red herrings that the ending is a pleasant outcome in this closed-room mystery.

Lemmy Beaglehole, local politico-cum-celebrity, is the judge of the Valentine's Day Bakeoff. Lemmy’s nasty critiques have set most of the Islanders against him. So, when he's finished off early in the piece, there is no end of his enemies, hence suspects. Jem must work in quick time to uncover the culprit amongst the tourists and locals stranded at the Bay View Hotel in the midst of a cyclone. Soon there's a second death, and a few suspicious events that ratchet up the tension.

The only false note was that I found the relationship between Pauley and Rhys to be confusing. It seems like Jem's boyfriend and best friend are flirting, especially with the reference to Rhys stalking Pauley.

I enjoyed the humor to be found in this cozy mystery; and am eagerly anticipating the next Jemima Jago book in the series. Thanks #Netgalley and #Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

CONTAINS SPOILERS;
Jemima "Jem" Jago has a fight with her boyfriend Rhys and goes to her friend Pauly's house. Pauly is the mistress of ceremony at the Bay View Hotel's annual bake-off and conscripts Jem to help. A storm strands everyone on the island where the hotel is located but the show must go on. In the middle of the tasting, the much hated judge, Lemmy Beaglehole, drops dead, presumably of poison. Almost all the contestants and others in attendance had motive. And who is the mysterious figure(s) that she keeps glimpsing in the corridors?
Jem and her friends follow the clues and eventually find the killer....as well as a dream job for Jem and a surprise in her personal life.
I love how Jem and her friends rally around when any of them have a problem. They are supportive even when they are not sure the solution is the right one.
Another wonderful bonus is the history of the islands and the description of the great scenery.
This series just continues to be great!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'A Death At Bay View Hotel' by Emma Jameson.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Emma Jameson, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 24th August 2024.

This is the fifth book I have read by this author. It is also the fifth book in the 'Jemima Jago Mystery' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'A Death At Seascape House' (book 1 in this series), 'A Death At Candlewick Castle' (book 2 in this series), 'A Death At Silversmith Bay' (book 3 in this series) and 'A Death At Neptune Cove' (book 4 in this aeries) which is the third book in the series and I would highly recommend each one!!

This novel consists of 23 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

Yet another absolutely fantastic read from the very talented Emma Jameson!!! Well done Emma 👏 👏 👏!!!

This book was very well written and the vivid descriptions really made me feel that I was in Cornwall with the sea air and sand all around me. It felt like a lovely mini holiday which was much needed!! The synopsis and cover worked perfectly with the storyline. I really liked that the chapters all had their own headings that resonated with the events of that chapter and many were direct quotes from the chapter itself and also quite amusing.

I absolutely love this fantastic series and every time I finish one book I immediately start missing the location and the characters. I have no idea how Emma does it but each and every time she brings out another book in this series it's even better than the one before!!! This fantastic addition is no exception and surpassed my expectations. I found this storyline to be a lot faster paced than 'A Death At Neptune Cove' and it jumps straight into he action with Jem being trapped at Bay View Hotel after a storm cuts off all transport and telephone lines. It is absolutely ram packed with twists, turns, cakes, murder , arguments, romance, humour, drama, secrets, lies, suspense, tension and absolutely everything that you could ever ask for in a gorgeous cosy crime that is ideal to read cuddled up on the sofa nice and warm while listening to the thunderstorm over the Bay View hotel! I was absolutely gob smacked by the ending as it was one I definitely never expected which I am very pleased to report as I love a page turner with an unexpected ending!!! I am not a huge fan of books that I have it all figured out by 50% which I have never had a problem with when it comes to the fantastic Emma's books!!! I loved that it had so much book talk, which was to be, if not expected then definitely hoped for as our protagonist is a librarian. This is a perfect beach read or one to curl up with in front of a fire. The setting and atmosphere is perfectly portrayed for a cozy mystery. This book is such an easy read with the words flowing I just could not put it down. I absolutely love the atmosphere and really feel like Cornwall is becoming my second home. I'm especially looking forward to visiting again in real life next month and will be keeping an eye on some of the places mentioned in the book to see if I recognise anywhere Emma based the storyline on. Emma's first two books are based in St. Morwenna, her third book in Penzance, her fourth explores Bryher in this book and this book is based in the Bay view hotel which is located on the westernmost tip of St. Martin’s and overlooking the Celtic Sea on the Isles of Scilly. The plot is set at the Bay View Hotel which gives the reader a locked room mystery theme. I am a HUGE fan of locked room crime books as it makes it more fun to try and work out the killer when there are fewer characters potentially involved and you get to know the characters a bit more than you usually would. I absolutely LOVE this series for so many reasons and one of them is the fact that Emma has taken me to do many different parts of Cornwall and I am intrigued every time I pick up the next book to find out where she will take me next!!! I have explored Morwenna, Penzance, Bryher and now have been taken to the Isles of Scilly. Where will my next holiday with Emma be? This book had me on the edge of my seat but also had me laughing until I got some very strange looks from my partner so make sure your not walking around or near the public when reading, especially when drinking tea!!! Some of the goings on and characters had me in absolute stitches!!! Another amazing adventure with Jem and I gutted to be coming to the end of what felt like a holiday (even though in this one I was stranded in a hotel, it was with amazing characters and definitely worth it!!).

Although this is the fifth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

The characters were an eclectic mix. I must admit I was not quite sure what to make of Jem at the start of the series as at times I quite enjoyed her strong willed personality and she has definitely grown more on me since first meeting her in 'A Death At Seascape House'. However, since finishing 'A Death At Candlewick Castle' and reading every book since 'A Death At Silversmith Bay' I can definitely say I am now one of her biggest fans!! I absolutely LOVE her personality her attitude and love watching her relationships with friends and more grow, develop and change over the books. I am so pleased that Jem and Rhys are finally in a relationship but they have such different ways of doing things, as seen at the start of this book, it will be interesting to see how long it lasts with Hack still on the scene!! I absolutely love both Rhys (although there's no way I could tolerate living with him) and Hack and loved meeting them both again along with the gorgeous Buck (Rhys' dog). I am a huge animal lover so any books that contain animals as part of their plot are always a huge hit for me and although we don't see Buck as much in this book I'm looking forward to seeing more of him in the next ones. I absolutely loved meeting Pauley and Micki again in this book who I have been invested in since my very first meeting with them. They both have such larger than life personalities and they are definitely strong women I wouldn't want to mess with. I missed Kenzie in this book and is another character I'm hoping to see more of in the next books as it has been lovely watching her grow and mature from the start. They have all become like close friends to me and each time I have to say goodbye after turning the last page I miss them immediately. They all have their own quirks and habits and all work perfectly together. There were several other characters in this book that all played their parts perfectly but I will end the review here as I don't want to give anything away. Needless to say each character was realistic and were all in the storyline for a reason and not just added to bulk the book up. A fantastic gang of characters that all come to life with Emma's fantastic evocative writing skills.

A huge congratulations to Emma on yet another successful novel. This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors and here's to the next book in this explosive series 🥂!!!

This is exactly why this series is one of my favourite and you Emma are on of my favourite authors!!! Don't start this book without clearing your schedules as once you start you will be hooked!!!

Overall an intriguing, page turning, cosy mystery in an idyllic setting which will keep you hooked throughout.

This year I'm reading quite a number of books set in the Scilly Islands and it could a sign that I need to start organising a holiday there.
That said this series is improving with each instalment and Jemina is now a strong and well plotted characters, a woman I would like to meet.
Great description of the places, solid mystery that kept me guessing.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

The book opens with a flaming row between Jem and Rhys. Words are said, and Jem leaves to stay with her best friend Pauley. Pauley is off to another of the Scilly Isles to emcee the annual bake-off at the luxurious Bay View Hotel, and she persuades Jem to tag along.

One Lemmy Beaglehole (what a name!) is this year’s judge, and he is a piece of work. He’s pretty well universally disliked, and when he drops dead after tasting the first contest entry, it’s a shock. You kind of get the feeling no one really mourned his passing, though.

Problem is, no one – contestants and vacationers alike – is getting out of the Bay View with a hurricane blowing in. Sergeant Hackman is on the scene, but an unfortunate allergic reaction has taken him out of commission, so it falls to Jem to sort things out. The more she digs, the more people she finds who have reason to dislike Lemmy. But which of them disliked him enough to kill him?

This is an engaging treatment of the classic locked-room mystery. Jameson gives us a varied cast of characters with a lot of different bones to pick with Lemmy Beaglehole. Lemmy’s vicious words have been directed against Jem’s friend Micki, local baker Trevor, and a host of other people. Jem must consider that perhaps someone she knows and is fond of could be the killer.

Jameson draws vivid pictures with her words. This character description was one of my favorites: “Posh was Madonna if she’d held on to her eighties Material Girl persona right through to midlife.” That immediately brings to mind an image for an ’80s kid like me!

The mystery was twisty enough to keep me guessing. The setting made me want to visit (except sometime when there’s not a hurricane). There were some tense moments when Jem put herself in harm’s way in the course of the story. The banter was charming as always. My only disappointment was that there were no cake recipes included. Alas. Ah well, we can’t have everything, can we? Another win for Emma Jameson and Jemima Jago!

It’s time for the Bay View Hotel’s annual bake-off and Jem is looking forward to sampling all the cake she can. But when head judge and successful local critic Lemmy Beaglehole drops dead in the middle of tasting a chocolate gateau, Jem can’t resist throwing herself into the investigation. Finding a crumpled rose-patterned envelope that may have contained the poison, Jem feels certain she’s close to the truth. But when a huge storm blows in over the Isles of Scilly, trapping everyone in the hotel overnight, Jem must work fast to untangle the clues and catch the killer before their next toxic treat ends up on her plate!
The fifth outing for Jem & another well written, engrossing mystery. Beautiful scenery & well portrayed characters had me reading Jem’s latest adventure in two sittings. There are twists, turns & red herrings so I was kept guessing until the end. I really like the mix of mystery & humour, roll on book six
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A Death at Bay View Hotel is book five of the Jemima Jago Mystery series, but it is the first book that I have read by Emma Jameson. It is an interesting cozy mystery taking place during a powerful storm when a bake-off is just beginning. Sort of a take-off on “A dark and stormy night,” combined with Great British Bake-off, only on a much, much smaller scale. So this was a fun read even if there was more than one character dying. One victim I liked, being sorry to see that something bad happened to her. However, like many of the contestants I disliked the first murdered victim too. He was the obnoxious judge of the bake-off. He wasn’t really missed but murder is murder no matter what it must be stopped, the guilty caught, and punished.

Having not read the first four books I played catch up on Jemima Jago, her love life, and her friends but soon enough it all fell into place. Still I think I should go back, reading the first book in the series. This is especially true since there are many unique characters that kept this story entertaining. As for the guilty party, I never guessed it until Jemima was explaining it all. It made perfect sense once it was explained but such a surprise, nonetheless.

For a cozy British mystery this is the perfect read with some personal elements but mostly the solving of the crime. A pleasure to read.

An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The annual bake off is ready at the Bay View Hotel. Unpopular judge Lemmy us there and complaining and insulting from the start. After the first taste bite Lemmy is dead on the floor. Jem is helping the one policeman who made it to the island before the storm locked everything down. With too many suspects and the raging storm will the culprit be found before it's too late....

I enjoyed reading about this group of characters. The plot has me guessing until the very end. I'd definitely recommend it to other mystery fans. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

Book five in the Jemima Jago series. I started this series at the beginning but seem to have missed book 4 which must have included important changes in Jem's life. I was therefore left guessing what must have occurred (my own fault.)

Anyway in A Death at Bay View Hotel Jem is back in the Scilly Isles where she attends a Bake Off in a posh hotel on one of the islands. There is a major storm which isolates them completely for several days, but luckily the local policeman is there too. Luckily because there seems to be a killer on the loose in the hotel. Two deaths and a couple of near misses puts fear into the hearts of all the hotel residents. Can Jem and her friends save the day again?

This was an interesting book especially in the detail of how it is to live in a place so dependant on the weather and communication. The story was written in a locked room style but it was further confused by two unknown people moving around in the hotel. There were red herrings galore and I was totally unable to guess the murderer. All good fun.

Now to go and find book four and fill in those gaps!

With visitors and locals all together for a cook off, a storm comes in that traps people where they are. Jemma, having gone with her friend Pauley, finds herself trapped just like everyone else. With nothing left to do but stay where they are, Pauley decides to hold the cook off with those that have arrived and a most despised judge. When a body pops up, Jemma puts on her sleuthing hat and tries to found out whodunit and why.

A great British cozy series that always leaves me satisfied. I adore Jemma and the gang and always find humor mixed with the mystery. Enough red herrings and suspects with twist and turns to keep you guessing to the final reveal.

I love a bake off! But this time murder is on the menu! A well developed mystery with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. Jem is a delightful character. This series continues to be a fan favorite of many! Thanks #Netgalley and

Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, cozy-mystery, amateur-sleuth, friendship, island-life, verbal-humor, situational-humor, librarian, poisons, relationship-issues, sea-storm, local-law-enforcement, closed-circle-mystery, investigation, unpleasant-guests*****

Welcome to the Isles Of Scilly. Accessible only by water (or helicopter) are an archipelago off the south westernmost coast of Cornwall.
This is fourth in a fun series about a librarian/amateur sleuth and the good friends who work together with her (the Scilly Sleuths) to find justice instead of the most convenient answer.
The islanders came for the food fair/bake-off and the off-islanders were stuck (some under protest) because of an impressive storm blowing in from the sea. The sergeant's anaphylaxis was no joke, nor was the indifference of the hotel staff. The same goes for the poisoning and the need to go to a home a mile away during the raging storm to get an insulin supply for one of the hotel guests. But there is a lot of humor to be found while sleuthing. I loved this one, too!
I requested and received an EARC from Bookouture via NetGalley. Thank you!
