I’ve been a fan of Reba McEntire since I was a little girl. I loved listening to her music and watching her in music specials on TV. Reba seemed to be so happy, spunky, and comfortable in her shoes, so to speak. She has always been someone I admired and now after listening to her book, I think even more highly of her.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Reba is that she was never afraid to share her faith. Even though it was common to be a Christian and a country music singer, she never shied away from thanking God for the many gifts she’d been given whether she was on the stage or on TV. Even when she entered the acting arena, she still stuck to her values which isn’t always easy in Hollywood.
I can only attest to the audiobook ARC (advanced review copy) of NOT THAT FANCY. Unfortunately, it did not include photos or the 60+ food and cocktail recipes. If you would choose to purchase the audiobook, a pdf document will be included for you to be able to download the recipes. Even though Reba narrates her own audiobook which makes you feel like you are sitting across the table listening to her stories, I would recommend purchasing the physical copy. Her narration was real and emotional. I loved her laughter while sharing stories and cried as she shared the tragic story of her band perishing in a plane crash. But, I really would have loved to see the photos while hearing her stories. The photos that I’ve found online with the book promotion give you an even more personal glimpse into her life and the food photos look delicious.
Reba shares numerous personal stories from her childhood as well as her life on the road as a performer and as a mom. After she shares stories, she then shares helpful tips related to the stories she shared like tips for decorating your home or how to have fun with your spouse/partner for free like playing board games.
Reba is a proud “Oakie” and is extremely grateful to her family. She lost her mom in 2020 and she credits her mom with much of her success as well as her faith in God. Reba feels like someone you could be friends with as she describes sitting on her porch watching the sunset while sipping an iced tea or whiskey and Sprite. As she says, “I don’t know what heaven’s gonna look like, but I hope it feels like Oklahoma.” Reba hasn’t let the accolades of a successful performing life go to her head. She feels like she could be your neighbor or friend from church. No matter where she is they…
“…make it a point to put God first, take care of our families, work hard, eat well, and always make time for a good hardy laugh.”
That sounds like my kind of advice. After finishing her book, I immediately ordered my own physical copy because I wanted to read through her stories again and try some of her mouthwatering recipes. This would make a great gift for the Reba fan you know!
Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots by Reba McEntire is a memoir with lots of great and down-to-earth advice. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author.
Actress and country music legend Reba McEntire shares many stories, recipes, and Oklahoma-style truths that guide her life. The physical version has a ton of photos and recipes.
Reba really explains the goal of her memoir pretty well: "That’s what I'm sharing in this book—some simple, not-that-fancy truths I live by and a bunch of good stories, photos, and recipes that go along with them. So if you're looking to slow down, get back to basics, and have a heckuva lot of fun, I think we're going to have a good time together in these pages."
I've been a fan of her for a long time. I grew up listening to her music, I love the movie Tremors, and I watched her show Reba with my family.
She seems so down to earth throughout this memoir, especially so when she notes how tickled she was when people create TikTok videos of themselves doing normal tasks like taking out the trash while her song "I'm a Survivor" is playing.
I especially love her true laughter that shines through when she's telling some of her stories. You can feel her pain when she describes sadder moments as well.
This would be a great coffee table book for her fans, or a cookbook to keep in the kitchen thanks to the recipes in the back.
What a fabulous read! You practically feel like you are having a chat with Reba by reading this book.
Loaded with wit, wisdom, stories of her hometown, life, recipes and her big old personality. A must read for Reba fans and I hear the book is loaded with pictures, I happen to do the audio which was forwarded by Garth Brooks and read by Reba herself.
Thank you to Netgalley, Harper Celebrate Audio and the Author Reba McEntire for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I’m a lifelong Reba fan so this book was a no brainer, must read for me. I’m so glad I did. She’s just delightful and exactly what you’d hope she would be. The stories were like sitting at her kitchen table and talking to her. I cried, I laughed (a lot) and I prayed. And that was before I got to the recipes. I’m from the south and the recipes included are good home cookin’ style recipes.
What can I say? It's Reba. Reba is the queen of country music and I have been a fan for what feels like forever.
I chose the audiobook of this, part biography, part life lesson book because it was read by Reba McEntire. It made the experience like sitting down with a glass of wine and an old friend, listening as they tell you things that happened in their life.
It is very well written and is more of a conversation than a stuffy autobiography. I found things to laugh about, things I never knew about the behind-the-scenes moments of Reba's career, and things that brought tears to my eyes.
I remember when Reba lost her band members and friends in a plane crash in '91 but to hear her tell it from her view, the tears still so apparent in her voice, reduced me to tears.
So love Reba or not, this is a book worth reading or listening to.
Thanks to @Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this book, in exchange for my honest and unbiased opion.
I love audiobooks like this where the famous author narrates their own book. I love Reba, so I knew I would enjoy this book and thankfully, it lived up to the expectation. This book was just like sitting down with Reba and listening to her tell stories about her life. Hearing bits and pieces of how she grew up, got into singing, what she went through losing her band in the early '90's, just all of it was good storytelling.

Ladies and Gentlemen the Queen of country music has put out a fabulous read! I love a good memoir where the author does the audio!
This is a cookbook, a lifestyle guide, family stories and the Oke way of life.
This book gives you a general outline of Reba’s life. From growing up to now with her boyfriend Rex.
She talks about the movie, Tremors, and how that came to be. It really opened her eyes into the acting world, knowing she wanted to do more.
Reba tells the heart wrenching story of losing her band in a plane crash and how she overcame that challenge.
She talks about her son Shelby and how he was raised. All the traveling home so she could be the one to take him to school. She goes on to talk about how he became a race car driver.
I’m excited to try some of her design ideas as well as her recipes!
90s country was at the forefront of my childhood years, and of course I had Reba songs memorized. I was thrilled to see Reba’s stories being published. I listened to the audiobook and would totally make the same choice again (even though I’m sure the print and photos are gorgeous). There’s nothing like hearing Reba’s voice telling the stories from her lifetime. She shares recipes, ideas for family or friend gatherings, restaurant recommendations, and more. She’s a powerful storyteller particularly in the chapter about grief; hearing the rawness in her voice made it all the more real. Her genuineness shines through every page. Any country or Reba fan will gobble this up!
Audiobook received for free through NetGalley
I adored listening to Reba read her book and am so glad I picked it up. It’s full of her life, handy tips, and hope. As I had the prereleased version it didn’t include Garth Brooks intro and I didn’t try to hunt down the recipes. That said a great listen while going about my tasks.
Highly recommend listening to this one on audio as the charm of this one is really getting to hear Reba's signature voice, and her emotions really come through when she's talking about the things that have affected her and matter to her. This one covers a big range of topics without necessarily getting too in the weeds on anything, but it's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon with Reba.
I listened to this book as my very first audio book ever! I am glad I received a digital copy too so I could see the pictures and captions.
I am not a county music fan but I liked some of Reba’s songs in the 80s and I watched her show Reba and thought it was hysterically funny.
I loved listening to her narrate the book because I love her accent. Most of her OK sayings I knew what they meant and I didn’t grow up anywhere near OK.
This book is what I expected- down to earth, folksy, good old fashioned horse sense. I think the world needs more of that today. I laughed at many parts in the chapters right along with Reba.
It’s an upbeat book and I listened to it in one day.
Simple and straight forward, words to live by.
There is simply no way this was going to be any less than a five star for me because Reba is the QUEEN!
I listened to the audiobook and her voice is just so soothing. Hearing her story in her own words was such a joy. She shares bits of her life, her family and friendships, her career, recipes, and just so much tenderness. I love hearing about her fabulous singing career and her acting roles. The show Reba is probably my all time favorite show, and while I wish there was a bit more in here about that time in her life, I appreciated that she included her continued friendship with cast member Melissa Peterman.
Through hard times and great times, Reba has just always been a pillar of strength and I adore her. I am very appreciative to have had the chance to listen to this one.
This book was really good. I listened to the audio version which Reba read and it was like you were just sitting down and having a conversation. Casual and personal. Stories from rodeo days to concerts, her family and her friends. this book includes photos from her childhood career and personal life along with 60 recipes.
Loved the book and Reba reading it. Was almost like sitting and talking to an old friend! Enjoyed the recipes - especially since I'd just been to her restaurant.
I got the audio version of Not so fancy, read by the author. I did not know much about Reba’s life and found it interesting. She talks about, among other things, her music, her life, her family, food, and God. The tone of the book was very personable, and Reba came across down to earth and friendly.
A must read for fans of Reba.
I enjoyed this book & was able to listen to it in one sitting. Reba shares stories I had yet to hear about her journey. It was wonderful.
I was sent the audio of this book to review. Reba reads it herself and does an amazing job of telling her story, her way. I fell in love with this book by the second chapter. Of course, I'm a big country music fan, so this book right in my special interest group.
Reba is a national treasure and I would pay a lot of money just to listen to her say sweet and supportive things to me. She does a lot more than just that in this book. I would highly recommend this audiobook to any Reba fan as well as any parent going through the many stages of life! Listening to Reba tell her stories and give out advice is a sure-fire way to make one feel less put-upon by daily trials or alone on their own healing journey. Love to Reba Forever 💛
Enjoyed listening to the book it felt like Reba was just talking about life and whatever came to mind. Preferred the audio book over the actual book
When I saw this autobiography coming out from Reba, I thought, "Here's your one chance Fancy, don't let me down." And, she certainly didn't. I couldn't wait to pick up this title each day. I loved the story of how she got to where she is today and the lessons she has learned along the way. As a big fan of the Reba show, I enjoyed this deeper peek into her life. Previously, I wasn't aware of her faith and that part of the journey made me love her all the more. Fantastic read!
