At first glance, this looks like a lot of other books. It’s not. The mom bringing up famous Black women who were pioneers in their fields was a little forced, but I appreciate elevating these women. Halfway through the book, I would have given it 3 stars. However, when Maya takes over the story, it won me over. This is not like any other book I’ve read.
Lots of great inspirations for young girls. I loved how the little girl didn't just want to be a typical princess, but a fierce historic warrior princess! (Who did sell a lot of her enemies into slavery, so I wonder if there are any less violent princess role models out there.)
This was very sweet. I would have loved this book as a child. I loved all of the real world examples of ways that young black girls can make an impact when they grow up. Princess, scientist, ballerina…
Nothing can win me over more than a cute story that also teaches children about their history. I loved all the references to exceptional women, and I also loved the family dynamic bonding that’s created in the story, and that will occur as a parent reads to their child.
What a great story exploring career options! This is a great book to help young people explore opportunities beyond their initial career ideas. The illustrations are wonderful and the added facts about the women highlighted in the story make this a wonderful book to enjoy as well as a resource to learn about women of our world!
Maya is going to be a princess, but her mother wants to make sure she knows all of the things Maya could be. This is a cute and informative picture book about important black women throughout history!

Thank you Netgalley for the free arc of this. I enjoyed this childs book. It had cute illustrations. I loved how it mentioned famous woman in different work fields that kids can learn. Only thing wish was more well known people as I had no clue who any of them were. It's a cute book for an inspiring princess to be
Well that was just the sweetest story!!! My 2.5 year old loved the pictures, but I think the story was a bit beyond her at this time!! I will save it for when she is older so she can learn about all these fabulous, strong women!!
This excellent picture book could be especially empowering for little black girls as it introduces several powerfully successful black women in a variety of careers. I like seeing diversity in the lovely illustrations which show people in wheelchairs and people with visual impairment right alongside everyone else in activities. There’s also a funny twist at the end of the story when we find out what kind of Princess the daughter aspires to be. Readers can learn a bit more about successful black women on the end pages of this book. I can envision this story inspiring little girls of any race to think about what they could be when they grow up.
This was an adorable book! About how a little girl can be anything she wants when she grows up, even a princess. Loved it!
I'm Going to Be a Princess is a wonderful story showcasing a young Black girl who wants to be a princess. Her mom talks to her about other professions, pointing to other Black women who have paved those paths before, but Maya is determined to become a princess. She explains to her mom about Queen Amina, who was a princess in the 1500s in what is now Nigeria, and how she grew up to be the strong and bold and brave leader of her people. Beautiful illustrations bring this story to life, and I really loved learning about all these accomplished women.
Maya might change her mind when she gets older. (Let's face it, most kids do, a dozen times or more!) But hopefully she will still want to be strong and brave and bold. Beautiful story!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
Maya comes home from school telling her mom they got to draw what they wanted to be when they grow up. Maya’s mom is a little disappointed Maya wants to be a princess and encourages her to think about all the other jobs she could do. Maya reveals though she wants to be like a Nigerian warrior princess. A cute book that introduces girls to various female figures that have done great things!
