Another book of Caitlin Moran essays? I'm in. This book was written in response to previous writing and events where, after discussing women so much, was asked about men. Her initial comments were humorous brush offs, but she decided to delve deeper, and this book is the result. In her snarky, open, and witty way, she looks at how men are socialized differently than women. Based mostly on talking with friends with some added research, she paints a picture that shows men and women grow up very differently. Writing this, it sounds a bit dull, sorry for that. This book is an interesting peek into men's lives, even if the experiences are limited. Moran's writing is both serious and funny, perhaps a bit more serious than previous essay collections. I am definitely enjoying the writing, seeing a different perspective, and thinking a lot about the topic.
As I was reading this, it reminded me of a previous essay by Moran "What about Men" in her book "More than a Woman". This book reads like an expansion of the essay with I greatly enjoyed.
Verdict: funny, snarky, thoughtful, pro-feminist, with a focus on better understanding men.
If I were to ever say "I'm going to read a book that champions men!" I would probably want it to be written by Caitlin Moran, as I am a huge fan of everything she's written. Except...this ain't it.
While I (sort of) get where she's coming from, women shouldn't be fixing the problems of men. They need to do that themselves. It's not our fault you won't go to the doctor or talk about your feelings or whatever.
