ANYTHING she writes imma read it now, her writing has alwayyyss been amazing. I loved the narrator and found my new favorite way to read thrillers. I had no idea this is part of a mini series but OMGGG her writing has def changed it is more fast paced than before.
I always enjoy diving into the world with Will Trent. There’s just something about this cast of characters that has my heart and I’m always going to come back for more. This one is pretty intense and has a decent amount of triggers connected to it, including SA, which is something to be aware of before going in as it plays a huge part in this entire storyline. With that being said, I think that the subject matter was handled well and done in a way that allows us to see it from not only the law enforcement view, but the medical and victims point of view as well. It lets us into the minds of everyone involved in the process and it’s interesting. The way it ends is a bit abrupt and it didn’t feel very satisfying after everything that happened, but I guess that’s how it goes in actual cases sometimes too. Either way, if you like the Will Trent series, this is a solid installment and I recommend.
As I have stated in previous reviews of books in this series, the Will Trent series is the gold standard in crime fiction. No one writes like Karin Slaughter. To be honest, I put this one off because of the subject matter. If you are a reader of this series, you know Dr. Linton's backstory. I knew that this was going to be a brutal trip back in time in some spots, and from the synopsis, the present would be brutal as well. I can confidently say, that this is the best book in the Will Trent series in my opinion.
When the book starts, Dr. Sara Linton is testifying in a trial for the defense. A young woman came into her ER a few years back and showed signs of a brutal assault. Sara was also the only one to hear the words of the young woman. Dr. Linton also knows the parents of the defendant. They were in medical school together when Sara was studying. The mother of the defendant gives Sara some very disturbing information that starts a chain of events that will leave no one in this book the same.
I am not going to give anything away in this story. If you are a reader of this story, you know what to expect going in. I think that Dr. Sara Linton is one of the strongest, toughest, and smartest female characters that I read. Her story is one of strength, compassion, and bravery. Will is the perfect partner for her. He is such a huge part of this particular storyline, and it was good to see him working with Sara and his partner Faith Mitchell. I love Faith Mitchell. She is so honest in this one, and it was great to see her emotional moments too. The characters in this series continue to evolve, and I truly cannot wait to read more.
The ending of this book was - yes, I am going to use this word again - brutal. It shocked me, and I am hard to shock. It will stay with you and really make you think.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook of this one. I both read and listened to this one. Kathleen Early is a terrific narrator of this series. It should come as no shock that I highly recommend this book and this series. I cannot wait for the next book!
Fifteen years ago, Sarah Linton's life changed forever. She was a resident at Atlanta's premier hospital and had just found out that she would be receiving a prestigious fellowship for pediatric cardiology surgery. Then it happened. She went into the bathroom and was surprised by a hospital janitor. He tied her up, raped her and stabbed her. Afterwards she went home, giving up the fellowship and becoming a pediatrician. It took a long while to heal physically and her injuries meant that she could never have children. It took much longer to heal mentally and emotionally.
Now, Sarah is back in Atlanta and in a relationship with Will Trent, Georgia Bureau of Investigation detective. She is the medical examiner for GBI. She is currently testifying in a civil trial against the son of the man who got the fellowship she had been slated for. A young girl came into the ER one night while Sara was there. She had been raped and cut and then wrecked her car driving to the ER. Sara could not save her but she can testify against the young man the girl identified as her attacker. In the bathroom, she runs into the man's mother. She knew both parents and never cared for them. The woman attacks Sara verbally and then hints that the two rapes, this girl's and Sara's, are related.
This sends Sara into a tailspin. She knows if there are two victims fifteen years apart, there are more victims who haven't been identified. She tells Will and with the help of Will's partner, Faith, the three set out to find out what happened and if there is a rapist who has been victimizing women for years.
This is the eleventh novel in the Will Trent series. Will and Sara are about to get married and if Sara can finally lay the ghosts of her rape to rest, it will make the rest of her life that much better. The book is Sara's story but Will's aunt, who allowed him to enter the system when his mother was murdered knowing the abuse he would probably endure is also featured. The book fills in more of the backstories of the two main characters while exposing a series of horrific crimes. I listened to the novel and the narrator was perfect. This book is recommended for mystery readers.
Will Trent and Sara Linton never let me down and the track record continues. Oof, this one was a doozy like all of Karin Slaughter's books. My dark heart is full🖤
I loved the narration 5/5
I absolutely love Karin Slaughter’s books and this was no exception.
I will say the content warnings in this one are rough. The main plot is around several women who have been sexually assaulted - and in some cases died - and delves deeply into Sarah’s history of sexual assault. The acts are described fairly vividly which will be difficult for some readers to experience. However, the way the various women spoke about their experiences felt very realistic, and I appreciated the way they candidly discussed it - both how they were treated and how they felt in the immediate and less immediate aftermath.
Overall, I would be careful heading into this one if sexual assault and sexual violence are triggering for you, but this was a well constructed and engaging thriller.
Although I generally enjoy the Will Trent books, I just couldn't get immersed in this one. Fans of the series will no doubt enjoy their time spent with the detective, but I found it to be a perfunctory installment of an otherwise steller series.
I hope this series never ever ends I LOVE it so much! This is the most recent book in the Will Trent series and it was a good one! We got lots of Sara's history and it was a wild ride start to finish. Although I'm pretty sure you can read these books as standalones I recommend reading both the Grant County and then the Will Trent series to get ALL of the context. Overall this was 5 stars and I can't wait to continue the series!
I think I’ve came to the conclusion that i do not like the will Trent books from Karin Slaughter. I’m an avid reader of this author so I’m used to her world building and slower paced storytelling in the beginning. But wow this just was not it. It was hard to follow and I don’t know because of the flow and pacing or just lack of interest,
This book failed to keep my interest it started off ok but I felt like it was predictable and so therefore I am only going o rate it 1 star. Thank you netgalley for a chance to read this book and review for my own thoughts and opinions
Unfortunately, I don’t think Karin slaughter is for me. I find her writing to slow and long to truly enjoy the story.
Was the plot interesting? Yes, and I did enjoy her plot twist.
I also find it unfortunate that her constant trope is exploiting women.
All that to say, I know SO many people love her and her writing. I just don’t think it will pick up another one of her books
“After That Night” by Karin Slaughter is a gripping thriller that delves into the complexities of trauma, secrets, and justice. The story revolves around Sara Linton, whose life was shattered by a violent attack fifteen years ago. Now a successful doctor, she unexpectedly becomes entangled in a trial related to another assault. As she works with her fiancé, Will Trent, and his partner, Faith Mitchell, they uncover a disturbing web of connections among victims.
“After That Night” is an emotional rollercoaster, skillfully weaving past and present. Slaughter’s portrayal of resilience and the pursuit of truth is both haunting and powerful.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to listen and review.
Sara Linton and Will Trent are back in another gripping tale. Sara has overcome a lot in her life. We begin one evening in the ER, where Sara Linton is working late. A woman is brought in, brutally attacked. After a brief final comment from the girl, Dani Cooper, Sara is brought back into a world from a horrible rape that happened to her 15 years ago.
Not sure why, but I struggled on this one. I like the narration, lots of suspense, Karin gives a lot of information, her story always comes together and the books intertwine with each other. If you love Will Trent, I recommend this book.
ʙᴏᴏᴋ ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ: I started reading this serious after BINGING the absolute gem of the show on Hulu, and also loving all things Karin Slaughter writes - and I loved it. Trent is one of my favorite characters, and this story is just so great.
"Squirrels lose seventy-five percent of the nuts they bury. That’s how we get trees.” “Does now seem like an appropriate time for a nut metaphor?"
Much like Slaughteyrs other novels, this one is disturbing, dark and gripping from the very start. Honestly, I am not sure I've ever read a slaughter book and not gone WTF at least twice during it, and this one was no different.

ᴀᴜᴅɪᴏʙᴏᴏᴋ ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ: I thought this audiobook was done really well. I love the narrator, and thought she did a great job throughout the entire story. The way she told the story really drew me in and I felt like I was right there. Overall, I loved it.

"And at the end of the day, it’s easier to just shut up about it and try to live your life and hope—pray like hell—that it doesn’t come up, so you don’t have to deal with it again and again and again."
After That Night is well written, well thought out, perfectly paced and riveting. Karin Slaughter does not shy away from brutal scenes or discussions which make her books feel even more real to me. Slaughter not only shows readers the effect that rape has on victims but shows predators as well. Her books may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love them!
I have been reading her books for years and she continues to deliver time and time again! This book had a nice number of twists, turns and revelations in addition to the tension which snowballed as the book progressed.
I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a fantastic job.
Well written, gripping, shocking, tense, and hard to put down!
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was pretty fast paced. There were a lot of technical words since several of the characters were doctors, so some of that was hard to follow. There were lots of twists but I managed to figure out a lot before the end.
This book was part of a series, but I don’t think you have to have read the other books to follow this one.
This 11th book in the Will Trent series brings back trauma that Sara Linton experienced 15 years previously. Her life has changed completely. She is a successful doctor, and is happily engaged to GBI Special Agent Will Trent. For the most part, her past is a distant memory. However, when a young woman comes into the ER while Sara is on call, Sara's past all but smacks her in the face. The attack that the young woman experienced eerily resembles something horrific that Sara experienced all those years ago.
Will and his partner Faith begin the investigation, but Sara remains part of things. The deeper the investigation gets, the more Sara is reminded of her experiences from before. Having Will by her side most definitely gives her strength.
This story was utterly intense. Not only is it easy to feel for the newest victim, but Sara's horrors were heartbreaking. Although I had previously read the Grant County series, this 11th book in the Will Trent series was a tough read, yet definitely the best book in the series. It was gritty - gruesome even - but it brought the past and present together. This past and present definitely collided at times, but it was done in such a way to leave the reader to have nothing but compassion for Sara.
While this latest book in this series could be read as a standalone, following the series in order, from the very first book, would really help the reader connect to all of the characters. Getting to know Will, Sara and Faith over the years and to see what they are up to now was great, but it only leaves me super eager for the series to continue.
Many thanks to William Morrow and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I might have been a tad lost due to not reading any of the will trent books - i was told it was not necessary but i think it would have provided better understanding of the characters and probably would have allowed me to feel more connected to them. I will be going back and reading the other grant county/will trent books and circling back to this one to see if that makes a difference
in terms of mystery and overall writing, Karin Slaughter killed it AS ALWAYS. I don't think its possible to be disappointed with her books. This is a wonderful police novel and quite emotional at times
TW: sexual assault, stalking, domestic abuse, graphic descriptions
I love this series and this book was another great addition. The characters are always great to return to and see what's next. I can't wait for the next. Thank you for the ARC.
I love Karin’s books and was so excited for AFTER THAT NIGHT! She has done it once again with this suspenseful ride and set me on the path of every emotion while reading.
The pacing was great and I loved how parts of the story were revealed in layers to keep things fresh and I was completely engaged into the story.
I am such a fan of adding the audiobook format with the physical book, and felt completely immersed this way.
