Karin Slaughter's books have always caught my attention and kept me interested and this one was no different. While at times this book felt like it was dragging on, I was ultimately surprised at the ending with who the main ringleader was. I feel like I should have guessed it, but the author really did a good job trying to get us as the readers away from the truth.
Will and Sarah's story was great and how they came together to solve this crime. I also really enjoyed Amanda, Faith, and Jeremy as side characters. I especially loved Faith and Jeremy and everything that happened there.
Looking forward to reading more of Karin Slaughter's books in the future!
✍️ I went into this knowing it was book #11 of the Will Trent series - also knowing that I have read none of them. I’ve read a few of Slaughters standalones, which I’ve loved. So went in with a level of confidence as she’s one of my favourite authors and was not let down - this review is based on this novel not the series.
Straight up - Dark, disturbing, gripping, brilliant!
went on a roller coaster of emotions reading this; fear, tears, anger and WTF is going on. Slaughter has a way of creating complex, multi layered characters that you love, hate, root for and will stay with you for a while after finishing. There are some brutal, harrowing scenes involving sexual assault (TW) written with unflinching candour while offering consideration and a voice to women, victims and even predators. While dealing with dark topics, it’s perfectly paced, twists and turns aplenty, compulsive and beautifully written.
There have been some cracker new releases this year, this is another one that I can happily add as one of my favourites. Be warned, once you start you may not be able to put it down - say see ya to anything you have going on, including dinner for any child and husband! 😂
5 brilliant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Many thanks to the fab team @harpercollinsau for an advanced reading copy and @netgalley @blackstonepublishing for ALC 🙏❤️
I loved this audiobook! I haven’t read any of the Will Trent series yet but that didn’t matter. I do plan on reading the rest now though. This was a great book!
This book is apart of Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series, however if you haven't read any of this series don't let it stop you from reading this book. I did the audiobook version. The narrator is fantastic and fully captures all the characters very well. The material is dark in this story and I do feel like trigger warnings would be great to have. I did enjoy how dark and twisted this story was to include the various different plot twists. I definitely want to read more of the Will Trent series. So glad I read this book.
I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have been a fan of Karin Slaughter's for a long time now and was excited to see she had a new Will Trent book coming out. I feel like this one comes full circle, Sarah will stop at nothing to find out who was behind her brutal attack decades ago and are the recent string of attacks and deaths related? We go down a hole of rich people and their privilege, how they feel they can do anything, and get away with it. I found the book flowed nicely and kept my interest. I really enjoy the Will Trent series and can't wait to see more.
I received a gifted audiobook for AFTER THAT NIGHT by Karin Slaughter from Blackstone Publishing Audiobooks!
AFTER THAT NIGHT is the eleventh book in the author’s Will Trent series and this case hits close to home. Will’s fiancée Sara is a successful doctor, but when a case that comes into the ER and the victim tells Sara she’s been raped, it opens up a lot of memories. Fifteen years earlier Sara’s own life was forever changed by a rape. As more comes to light about the young woman in Sara’s ER, it seems there is a connection between their cases. Sara turns to Will and his partner for help in finding out the truth.
I tend to always forget how much I enjoy Karin Slaughter’s books until I start reading another one. These books will work as standalones, but I do think I get more out of them knowing a bit of the characters and their backgrounds. With Sara being a focus of the case in addition to the backstory of the investigators, I think that is especially true. I have missed a few books in this series (I really need to go back and figure out which ones to correct that) so you definitely can pick them up out of order without missing major elements of the cases.
These books are brutal and really don’t pull punches, even more so when the subject matter at its core is multiple rapes. There are a lot of trigger warnings for this book and I do think it is one to go into carefully. This tackles a lot of crimes that will have you mad and heartbroken for the victims and their statements as well. The mystery itself included some turns I didn’t see coming as well.
I do love a good contemporary mystery/thriller and Karin Slaughter, as usual, delivers that. But it strained credulity too often, which I found frustrating from such an experienced author.
The gist of the story is that Georgia Bureau of Investigations agents Will Trent, Faith, and medical examiner Sara Linton go rogue to solve a series of violent--usually fatal--rapes spanning 15 years. It examines the impacts of the crimes on the survivors, their families, their careers, and the rapists and their families.
Tough subjects aside, it was a good story that could have been so much better.
My beefs with the story: I struggled to believe the Will Undercover narrative, he’s too distinctive looking and the people he was investigating had too much to lose to not suss out his true identity and it all took place in the city where they all live; the final twist and the motivations behind it came too fast with too little genuine insight into The Master and so it felt like a stretch; I had a hard time believing the crimes had never been looked at as potentially linked; thrusting Faith’s son into the fray without training or credentials just wouldn’t happen.
That said, I was engaged enough to listen to the audio version in one day so I’m giving it 3.75 stars rounded up to 4.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC audio copy of this book in excange for this review.
Honestly, Karin Slaughter could probably write me a parking ticket and I would give it five stars. I just love her storytelling and being part of Sara and Will's world so much. Yes, this is book 11 and yes, I have read them. So while I think this could be read as a standalone, the attachment I have to the characters and their histories made this plot extra gripping. I audibly gasped when I realized where this book was going with Sara's past.
Slaughter's books are dark and graphic and this was no exception. However, they are so much more than the shocking details. I love the relationships and trust between the main characters and how they each grow and develop as the series continues (Jeremy! omg!). I'm so nostalgic for this series that it is hard not to be biased, but the Grant County and Will Trent Series are just so special to me. That said, I felt the conclusion of this book was oh so very satisfying.
This was the first Slaughter book that I listened to on audio and the narrator, Kathleen Early, absolutely crushed it! I was so impressed with how she handled such a wide cast of characters. I feel like she brought them to life perfectly. The only voice I couldn't get over was Amanda's. Totally not how I voiced her in my head all these years! It was so interesting finally putting voices to the characters after all these years of just picturing them in my head.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for my ALC. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and I am so grateful for an early copy!
I mistakenly requested the ARC of this book without realizing it was the 11th book in the series. I have only previously read the first book of this series (Triptych) and that was several years ago. Thankfully, this book worked wonderfully as a stand alone. I never once felt like I didn't know what was going on, and there was still enough character development in this book that I understood who everyone was. So this review is from someone who is not very familiar with the series.
Please be aware that this story is very brutal and graphic about abuse and sexual assault committed against women. If you are familiar with Karin Slaughter's books, then this will not be a shock, but if you aren't, it can be difficult to read.
Dr. Sara Lipton was brutally assaulted 15 years ago and it is all brought back in one night when she treats a younger rape victim who asks her to make sure her rapist doesn't get away with it, right before she dies. Sara see so many similarities between this young woman's attack and her own from all those years ago. Sara becomes entwined in the victims case with her fiancé Will Trent in an effort to see that the attacker doesn't get away with what they have done. Twists and turns abound that leave Sara shocked to discover how deep this all goes.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of the audiobook.
Wow! Karin Slaughter does not disappoint in this newest installment in the Will Trent series. Will, Sara, and Faith are tested with this case as it resurrects painful memories. The plot is complex, gritty, raw, and riveting. I was engrossed trying to guess how it was going to play out. Slaughter seamlessly intertwines themes of motherhood and family, misogyny and rape.
Will, Sara, Faith and Amanda are incredible characters. They are idiosyncratic, endearing, flawed, and real. In "After That Night," the reader gets a good look into Sara's past. The secondary characters are also well-drawn. They are arrogant, entitled, corrupt, and depraved. I yearned for them to be taken down.
I highly recommend this book. That being said, it is not for the faint of heart as the subject matter is absolutely brutal. I suggest reading the synopsis before diving in.
I listened to the audio. Kathleen Early has narrated several of Karin Slaughter's audiobooks. Her narrations are consistently excellent.
Thank you to HarperCollins and Netgalley for an audio ARC of After That Night by Karin Slaughter for review.
Karin Slaughter is my favorite crime thriller. And having Kathleen Early narrate it makes it even better.
This is the 11th book in the Will Trent series, but you don’t have to have read them all to understand this one.
This is gruesome and disturbing. It is about about a group of horrible people running a rape “club”.
Karin Slaughter does a great job of writing her main characters. They are all people you root for, and want things to work out for them.
I highly recommend any book by Karin Slaughter!
Thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing Audiobooks for an advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
3.8 stars
After That Night starts with Sara trying to save a young woman who was raped. The story also goes back to Sara's early resident days when she was sexually assaulted. Sara and Will go back to her friend group from 15 years ago to solve a mystery.
Excellent narration by Kathleen Early.
Thanks NetGalley for an ARC copy of this audiobook. I love this author and was so excited to be able to review this book. There is a huge ⚠️ warning with tons of talk about R*Pe and very descriptive details about it. It was a very dark story of investing a girl who died one night in the ER and the many other the stories that came from opening that investigation. In relation to the audio narration I was bothered that the audio kept getting quiet and back to normal volume and back to quiet. Not sure why it did that but I found it distracting.
Another FANTASTIC Will Trent book!! These books always cover such dark and trigger full cases (especially rape) but I feel like the way Karin writes Will & Sara it helps it not be too dark. Their relationship helps me focus on that more than the horrible stuff that's going on. Tho don't get me wrong there is some serious sickening things going on that makes you super upset. But Sara and Will are EVERYTHING!!! I really enjoyed how unlike some of the other cases where they're not around each other much, this one they're together quite a bit. I just ADORE their relationship so much. Like I am here for them!!!!
Will is absolutely PRECIOUS and I wanna just protect him at all costs. I love how Sara gets him. This was a heart breaking case for Sara but it was handled so well. These books are always long ones but yet I'm hooked throughout. The narrator is soooo good. She makes these books for me. I can't wait for the next Will and Sara book and really hope we get to see their wedding!
I’m sure this is an incredible book, and I think if I didn’t have the specific trauma I have, I would love it because Karen Slaughter is one of the best voices in fiction in a generation. Sadly I had to stop during the story of Sarah’s rape, but I’ll DEFINITELY be checking out every other book in this series!
I have loved Karen Slaughter books in the past. I was excited to see this one and get approved. However I did not notice it was #11 in the Will Trent series. This story was so bad. The characters were so whiny and annoying. The romance was so awful, my love. Eye roll. The “twist” was meh. I think maybe this series should be finished and go back to writing stand alones. Someone mention “virtue signaling” and I can see it. Just don’t.
The narrator was great tho.
Thank you NetGalley and Blckstone publishing for the audio arc. I appreciate the opportunity to leave my honest opinion.
After This Night is my first Karin Slaughter book and my first book in the Will Trent series, I had access to both the Kindle and audiobook versions, but I listened to the audiobook more. The book was quite lengthy, and the chapters were long. I felt it was easy to get hooked at first as Sara tried to save one of her patients as their dying words mentioned they were raped and to help her find justice. However, I lost interest as the story kept going. The story was read more like a cop detective book than a suspense thriller, which did not agree with me. The ending was fantastic, though. I did not expect the ending, and that saved the book for me.
Thank you to NetGallery and to both William Morrow and Blackstone Audio for giving be a copy of the book.
Slaughter’s eleventh Will Trent entry finds Will and partner Faith bucking their boss Amanda’s assignment once again and instead investigating a series of very disturbing rapes. Will’s hated Aunt Eliza and makes a brief and amusing appearance. Excellent audiobook edition.
Recommended for Slaughters’ many fans.
I am a Karin Slaughter fan!! I do love that while she writes series, you don’t have to have read Al of the books prior to understand the story. She writes just enough to get you caught up. But if you have read the series, I love seeing how the story continues to unfold and how you continue to learn more about each character. Some of her books have been pretty gruesome when describing the victims and acts of violence. This one would be less gruesome to me but if you are a survivor of sexual assault, this one could be triggering.
While overall I enjoyed the reading of this book, the voice done for Richie was the most annoying voice. I know it may just be me and my neurodiverse brain, but I cringed every time I knew it was coming.
Karin Slaughter does it again with another compulsive read. Will Trent and Sarah Linton are back in the 11th installment of the Will Trent series. In this novel, readers are taken back to one of the worse nights of Sarah’s life. It’s been 15 years since it’s occurred. However, Sarah is reminded of the horrific incident when she treats a patient with similar injuries. Will, Sarah, Faith (with a few other characters along the way) begin investigating, and what they uncover is disturbing and very personal.
Like her previous novels, this one is dark and graphic. The plot, characters and the big reveal are so well done. I literally loved it all.
Since this is a series, there will be some things that you may miss out on if you haven’t read the previous novels. I have been reading this series out of order, so I have a general idea of relationship dynamics between the side characters. However, I think you could read this novel as a standalone. I found that Slaughter did a great job “recapping” some of the significant events of Sarah and Will’s life… but you may not know everything about Faith, Tessa, etc, if you haven’t read the previous novels.
I love listening to Karin Slaughter novels as Kathleen Early ALWAYS does great job narrating the novels; this one was no exception.
Looking forward to the next Karin Slaughter novel 😊
