Another great listen by Karin Slaughter. It was informative and kept me listening for more. It does have a lot of trigger warning for sexual abuse and graphic descriptions but it was well done. I'm looking forward to the next in the series!

After That Night
By: Karin Slaughter

Red Flags:
Stalking, Sexual violence, Domestic abuse, Language, Graphic descriptions

Genre:
Adult Mystery, Suspense

Quotes:
“Give a man a parachute, he flies one time. Push a man out of an airplane, he flies for the rest of his life.”

Summary:
Will and Sara are engaged to be married, but hauntings of her past come full circle while working in the ER one night while trying to save a girl’s life. I don’t want to spoil this novel, so I’ll leave it at that.

Review:
This is my first Will Trent novel. As much as I love the characters and the writing style, this crime thriller came up a little short for me. It was very graphic, yet predictable. Slaughter’s talent shines but the graphic writing should have a warning. The multilayered plotline becomes lengthy and confusing, which could be because I read this as a standalone novel.

Karin Slaughter did it again! This was such a jaw dropping thriller! It had me second guessing myself the whole time! Such a good thriller with so many plot twists and Easter eggs!

A great series that can be read as a standalone.

I appreciate that this book centers around sexual assault and that it is taken very seriously. Oftentimes victims of sexual assault are trivialized even though they have to deal with the trans of being attacked for the rest of their lives. Slaughter did a great job of making sure the issues her characters faced were seen and never trivialized.
Entertaining and a satisfying conclusion.

After That Night by Karin Slaughter

Blurb

Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton's life changed forever when a celebratory night out ended in a violent attack that tore her world apart. Since then, Sara has remade her life. A successful doctor, engaged to a man she loves, she has finally managed to leave the past behind her.

Until one evening, on call in the ER, everything changes. Sara battles to save a broken young woman who's been brutally attacked. But as the investigation progresses, led by GBI Special Agent Will Trent, it becomes clear that Dani Cooper's assault is uncannily linked to Sara's.

And it seems the past isn't going to stay buried forever.

My Opinion

Karin Slaughter is one of those authors that I have always known about, but I definitely haven't read as much as I think I have. This is the first book I have read in the Will Trent series but I was easily able to keep up as the backstory is provided for this case. I was a little bit unsure what to think when I started reading this book but it very quickly grew on me. I really need to read more books in this series, but for me this was a great book to start with.

Okay. Let me just jump right into this one. Haha.

I'll be honest.

At first, I thought Slaughter had lost her mind. It seemed like she had totally forgotten every other book she'd ever written, and the timeline was ridiculously off.

Of course, then it jumped to "three years later" and made a lot of sense. Haha. So, if you start reading this book and think it's ridiculous, just keep going. It quickly makes sense.

Now, onto the book itself.

I really enjoyed it. It dived into Sarah's backstory and her rape, which has been an ongoing theme in the Will Trent books that I've always wanted to know more about.

I liked that it tied up some loose ends and brought some things around full circle. I don't think this is the last book in the Will Trent series. I fully anticipate more in the future. However, the way the book ended, Slaughter definitely could wrap things up if she wanted to.

There's not much I can say about this book except that it's another great addition to the Will Trent series. As usual, Karin Slaughter has done it again.

As for the narrator -- excellent, no complaints whatsoever.

I will never understand how Karin Slaughter can write such chilling books. The way I feel reading her books is beyond me. I really enjoyed the roller coaters of twists and turns that this story took, and then to end the way it did was just absolutely incredible.

*Audiobook*

Sara Linton’s life was turned upside down fifteen years ago when she was brutally raped. Now a successful medical examiner engaged to equally successful special agent Will Trent, her life is once again upturned when a woman is violently assaulted in a way that is eerily similar to Sara. With an investigation underway, Sara realizes there are many women like her, and that they are all linked.

Major trigger warning: This book discusses rape and assault. It is not overly gruesome, but it is explicit, so it is not for everyone.

Overall, I liked the book. There were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing, and the reveal made sense but was unexpected. I liked the main characters and the investigative aspect of the plot. It felt like a true crime show more than a traditional thriller. But the story was entirely too long. It could have easily been cut down 100 pages. I loved the beginning, but the middle lost it for me. The ending redeems itself, though. Thanks to NetGalley, Blackstone Publishing, and Karin Slaughter for this free ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Karin Slaughter never dissapoints! An indepth dive into the back story of Sara is expertly interwoven into the present as Will, Sarah and Faith unravel a sick game of predatory doctors. Slaughter draws you into a story that you cannot, nor want to get out of. Thank you for the opportunity to listen to this arc.

This book was enjoyable, but way too long. This was my first Karin Slaughter read, but I’ve heard that’s common with her books. I listened to the audiobook and it was a little hard to keep up. There were so many characters to keep straight. With that being said, I would definitely check out more of her work! It’s part of the Will Trent series, but I read it as a standalone with no issues.

Decent thriller. The novel follows the investigation of a brutal attack on a young woman named Dani Cooper, who is linked to a traumatic event in the past of Sara Linton, a doctor and the fiancée of GBI Special Agent Will Trent. The novel explores the themes of trauma, revenge, secrets, and justice, as Sara and Will try to uncover the truth behind the assault and its connection to Sara’s past

Such a brilliant read! The suspense built throughout the whole novel, the characters felt well rounded and even though it was the first book I read in the Will Trent universe, it still all made sense as a standalone. I did see the twist coming but it was placed very well that it still packed a punch.

After that Night is Book 11 in the series. However, at least for me it read well as a stand alone. I plan to catch up and read the rest of the series but I was able to drop right into the story and it drank me down. The book is gritty dark and written so well you feel as if you have dropped right into a real police investigation in real time. The storyline starts off with a tragic death at a hospital where a rape victim dies from her injuries and only her attending ER doctor Sara hears the confession that she had been brutally attached drugged and raped before her death. Sara promises the woman that she will find justice for her and stop the man who hurt her from hurting anyone else.

This brings up hard memories for Sara who was also raped 15 years earlier. But despite the trauma involved she intends to keep her promise. As the investigation deepens similarities arise that are uncannily similar to what happened to Sara. Is there a connection? Could what happened to this girl possibly be linked to Sara’s old case? Then other crimes begin to surface and everything she once believed about what happened to her 15 years earlier comes into question. Can Sara and Will uncover a corrupt criminal plot that has devastated lives for nearly two decades. Who is responsible and why.

I could barely put this book down. For anyone with sexual assault triggers be warned this book covers dark subject matter with brutal clarity and violent details. With that being said it was exceptionally well written and I highly recommend reading it! Absolutely heart stopping book.

Title: After that Night (Will Trent Series #11)
Author: Karin Slaughter
Narrated by: Kathleen Early
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Length: Approximately 16 hours and 34 minutes
Source: Review Copy from NetGalley.

Do you have a favorite genre that you like to read in the fall? I really love to read thrillers and mysteries in the fall. After that Night by Karin Slaughter was a riveting thriller that kept me on pins and needles throughout the entire story.

Doctor Sara Linton made a promise to a dying girl, Dani, that she would find who had raped and brutalized her. Years later as Sara testifies at a trial to convict Dan’s rapist, she discovers that this case may be linked to her own brutal rape fifteen years before. With help from her fiancé, Will Trent, and his partner, Faith, they investigate Sara’s rape as well as Dani’s to figure out if they can find the perpetrators. Will they solve this crime before they strike again?

This book kept me on the edge of my seat as Sara, Will, and Faith investigated the crime and put the pieces together. Even after you think you know what’s going on, there is still a slight twist at the very end. The crimes were horrifying and made me want to lock my daughter up to keep her safe. It’s sad to know that there are people like that out in the world that only think about themselves and their gratification and not about the people whose lives they’ve destroyed.

What I loved even more than the suspense were the characters and their relationships. I loved Sara and Will’s love story and finding out more about them. They are on the verge of being married so they have that on their minds as well. Faith is a great partner, worried mother, and Sara’s best friend. Faith wants what is best for her son who is soon graduating from college, but is what she wants, what he wants? I have only read the last few Will Trent books and I really need to go back to the beginning of this series and read from the beginning. I do feel you can read them as standalone as they give background on the characters. I have not watched the show yet, have you?

Kathleen Early was a great narrator. This was yet again another audiobook that made me want to keep driving just so I could keep listening to the story. It was a perfect book for the end of October and beginning of November.

I was wary to start this one since I've never read a Will Trent novel before, but honestly it didn't affect the story too much other than maybe missing a few little easter eggs the author may have sprinkled in with the plot. The audiobook was done really well, I enjoyed the narrator's voice. It was clear, concise, and engaging. There was a lot of introspection with the main character, Sara which I think took a bit of the suspense out of the story. There were a few parts I was waiting for the story to move along a bit and a lot of the excitement and thrill came towards the end, which made up for the slower parts. I love Karin Slaughter for her prose and the fact that she never shies away from brutality and violence. While I understand that might not be everyone's cup of tea, as a true crime junkie, I EAT IT UP every time. I might have to go back and start reading all the Will Trent books now! 4/5 *CHECK TW*
