CW: rape, kidnapping, rape, more rape, domestic abuse

I have read every one of Karin Slaughter’s books and she’s one of my favourite authors. Though, I do have to say, please, can some non-women be target next time, please? I really like her writing, I like how she builds suspense, it’s all very well done, but most of her books involve women being the victims of usually pretty horrific crimes. And while, yes, women do statistically tend to be the victims of these types of crimes more often, it’s also fiction, and you can make up whatever you want. If a non-verbal merman can get his HEA with a demi-sexual fisherman, Karin Slaughter can write some non-female victims.

This is the latest in the Will Trent series, which I adore. I absolutely love Will Trent, but only book Will Trent, we won’t talk about that other one on the TV… This book carries on the relationship between Will and Dr Sara Linton, and it brings up things from Sara’s past that we thought we over and done with. While I did like getting to meet some of the folks from Sara’s past, they were all pretty fucking awful. And bringing up traumatic stuff over and over felt icky, though it had to be done for the story. I’m a bit unsure of how I feel about the overall story, because it was all rape all the time, and I really dislike reading about that. But, like I said above, I do really like Slaughter’s writing and the way she tells a story, I just wish it hadn’t been this particular story.

Very happy to be back with Will and Sara, wish it had been not so rapey.

There are no words to describe how phenomenal any of Karin Slaughter's books are. I will say, they are not for the faint of heart and they can be intense, but they are SO GOOD. The story lines never miss and she keeps you on the edge of your seat. I also enjoy that this is part of a huge series, but as someone newer to her work, I can read it as a standalone and not be confused. Highly HIGHLY recommend her work, just always read any trigger warnings available to be as prepared as possible.

Wow! This was addicting. I do think that if I read the first books I would have felt a stronger connection to the character, however I still was able to read and understand a good chunk of what was happening.

Please check trigger warnings as this is a very dark read. I will be honest and say it was sometimes a bit tough to get through because we are spared very little details in some things. The way that Karin writes books really sucks you into the story and this one was done just as well!!

This was dark and disturbing - exactly what I expect when reading a Karin Slaughter book. I love this series and these characters. This story was a lot, but the way she writes these heavy storylines and backs it up with engrossing characters, it was such an enjoyable read. I was engrossed the whole time. The narrator did such a great job telling this story.

3.5 stars, rounded down. It is not completely necessary to have read the Grant County/Will Trent books that precede this one, but it definitely helps to provide both background and context for the plot and characters.

That said, this is an intriguing book, if a bit long. If it weren't for how it was dragged out, I probably would have rated this 4 stars, because the mystery and twist are compelling and well crafted. (But I did pretty much figure out the big twist before the end, because the author very stealthily leaves clues that poked at my brain until the investigators finally cued into them as well).

I really enjoy the characters of Sara Linton and Will Trent, and liked the interplay between the various characters and their investigation into how a present day sexual assault ties back to Sara's assault many years before (and whose perpetrator was captured and jailed).

This is a solid police procedural novel. I listened to it as an audiobook and while parts are difficult to listen to due to the subject matter, they are also excellently portrayed by the narrator, Kathleen Early, who I believe has narrated all of the Karin Slaughter books that I've listened to.

I highly recommend this series to those who like hard hitting police novels. These books don't shy away from tough subjects, so avoid them if you enjoy your mysteries more on the cozy side.

This book follows a medical examiner Sara Linton, who is engaged to Special Agent Will Trent.she is living her regular life, fighting her past battles until Dani happens.

Dani Cooper is brought into the ER after her car hits an ambulance.Sara is fighting herself to save Dani, when Dani tells her she has been raped and the accident happened between her escape.

Sara couldn't save her from death but she promises Dani that she would find whoever is behind this as she had went through the same in her past.Sara herself haven't recovered from her haunting past until Dani becomes a reason for her to fight..

After 3 years, the case is on the verge of failure and Sara can never give-up on her promise to Dani.
The more Sara digs the more she finds this connected to her rape case.Yet Sara doesn't want to unveil her past and go through it all again but without doing it she can never punish the one.

The book is gut wrenching from the very beginning. This is my first Will Trent book and am really hooked.

Karin Slaughter writing is too good that I can't praise her enough. She gives goosebumps with her body horror.I loved all the stomach churning elements but I strongly recommend checking the TW before going into this.

The investigation part is also executed very balanced with small revealing here and there without actually losing the intrigue of a reader. Some of the characters are very messed up and unsettling that made me actually gag.I can never think of living in such a world where these peoples exit.

It was hardly emotional and sometimes hard to read the grief the characters faced. The twists and turns were spectacular and upto the point.Highly recommended

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for gifting me an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I know this is #11 in this series, and don't hate me here but this was my first Slaughter. And I really enjoyed it. This can definitely be read as a stand alone. I know that I could have had more character development having known more, but this was a solid read going in blind. This is a huge trigger read for rape, so let it be known this whole book and plot is based around it. This was a police procedural/thriller that held my attention from the ery beginning. An ER doctor, Sara, is tasked with caring for a young woman with considerable injuries and a confession of rape. Sara does every thing in her power to help bring justice for this young woman. And being engaged to a great detective, Will Trent, is an added bonus. This had a twisty ending, and even though I guessed it, it was no less shocking. A solid read and now I'm eager to read more of Karen Slaughter! A huge thank you to Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing for the advanced audio. (Narrator was fantastic if you can get this in audio form!)

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Kathleen Early did an outstanding job with the narration. This had to have been a harrowing and emotional book to act out. On that note - it's a tough read. I'm trying to veer away from books where women are horribly, and explicitly, abused and murdered. But I do trust Karin Slaughter - especially as she is invariably writing from a woman's perspective. Yes, there is a lot of graphic stuff in 'After That Night'. But there's also a whole lot of clever, and insightful, commentary on a world where, far-fetched as some seem to think the plot is, anything really is possible. It's a decent read, and it works perfectly well as a standalone if you aren't up to date with the series. Do use headphones if going the audio route though. And I recommend that you do.

I received a free audiobook copy from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.

Well, this is the first book I've received from NetGalley that I just couldn't bear to finish. I just... couldn't. I wasn't hooked, interested, or invested in any of the characters. I just didn't care! I can't believe it! I've read other books of Karen Slaughter's and although she's not my favourite, I've managed to get through them no problem. I can't even really say what was wrong- I was just bored and the writing felt tedious. Oh well, I gate it my best try! Maybe next time!

Karin Slaughter is back at it again, baby! With her 11th installment in the Will Trent series, After That Night. I am so happy to be back in the world of Will and Sara, and Sara is at the forefront of this novel.

15 years ago, Sara’s life was changed forever after a violent attack. After all these years she’s worked hard to make a life for herself, despite the trauma. She’s a successful doctor, engaged to the man she loves (Will 🥹), lives with adorable greyhounds, and she’s thriving. Until a young girl is rushed to the hospital, she’s been brutally attacked, and Sara realizes this isn’t a coincidence that the brutal attack on this girl mirrors her own.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed it, because Slaughter truly knows how to write a story. This one had powerful and heartbreaking conversations that stick with you, and a sickening and sinister ending that exposes powerful people choosing innocent victims meticulously, before they are sexually assaulted, and sometimes worse. My heart broke for Sara and all she had to endure during this investigation, but she is one tough woman. Although at times I felt the story was a little slow, filled with unnecessary details, and even corny at times, it would pick back up and did not disappoint!

Rating: 4⭐️

One minute Sara Linton is going about her day to day life as a pediatric doctor and the next she is in a court room describing the traumatic death of Dani Cooper after a night shift in the ER.

What Sara wasn’t prepared for were the trails of clues and similarities between Dani Coopers death and her own rape several years prior during her time in med school. Sara works diligently with Will Trent and his partner, Faith, to find out how and why these tragedies are linked together and if so, how many others were there?

This had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was hooked from the beginning and all the twists and turns prevented me from predicting the ending. Being able to see Sara’s point of view and how her history linked to Dani Cooper made for a really engaging reading experience. I also thoroughly enjoyed the medical setting that Sara was a part of. Having that healthcare/scientific aspect really made this book stand out! I will warn any reader going into this to please check trigger warnings as some of the content was very graphic and sexual in its nature so just be aware!

Karin Slaughter never fails to please me. This was the first book I had read in the Will Trent series, and now I want to go back and read the rest. This book kept me guessing and hanging on until the very end. I was not bored at all while reading. Lots of twists and turns. This was such an easy listen because of how into it I got. Reader be aware that SA is discussed a lot in this book because of the plot and the cases they are discussing.

I recently listened to “After That Night” authored by Karin Slaughter and narrated by Kathleen Early. This was an amazing read that balanced being a page turner and great development. It had been quite some time since I read a “Will Trent” novel by Slaughter and am confident that this book can be picked up easily without having read any other of the “Will Trent” series.

This story follows Will Trent and his fiancé Dr. Sara Linton. Will Trent is an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Sara is a former cardiac pediatric resident now working as a medical examiner and Emergency Room Physician. One night a patient arrives in the ER with life threatening injuries. Sara learns that her patient Dani had been a recent rape victim and vows to help her before she succumbs to those injuries. The details are eerily similar to those of her own rape. The more Sara investigates this, the more the layers are uncovered. With the help of her fiancé and his partner, Sara finds many more connections to her own rape and to Dani’s.

This book was a quick read and Slaughter did not disappoint. I think Early’s narration of the novel was great and appreciated her ability to differentiate charters with the use of different voices.

Sara Linton is an ER physician, whom is working a typical shift until Dani, a patient suffering numerous injuries arrives dramatically to the Emergency Room. During her efforts to save the girl, Sara hears only a small amount of evidence, and promises to bring the person responsible to justice. However, as Sara dives into the case surrounding Dani, she becomes aware of the mysteriously similar connections to the night that changed Sara's life forever.

*trigger warnings: rape, abuse, sexism*

This was an enjoyable novel by Karin Slaughter, and I found it to be a good book, albeit a bit intense and graphic at times. The audio book was enjoyable to listen to and easy to follow. I would have no problem recommending this to anyone that is not bothered by the above trigger warnings.

After That Night is the ELEVENTH (😱) installment in the Will Trent series but it is the first one I have read! It totally works as a stand alone and I will now be going back to reread all of the series! This book follows Sarah and Will as they look into crimes very personal to them that could be connected. Will they be able to link the cases and give closure?

I absolutely loves this story. Sarah and Will are the best. I loved their dynamic and how much caring there is present between them. Faith is an awesome mama bear character and I loved seeing the three of them work together. It was such a badass story that was so cut throat it was heartbreaking too. The crime itself shocked me and this would have been five star had it not been for one part of the ending that didn’t sit right with me. Overall, this was a phenomenal Karin Slaughter and I can’t wait to dive into all of the Will Trent/ Grant County books!

“After That Night” is a suspenseful, gritty mystery in this series trying to track down the perpetrator of serial rapes and murders. While this book certainly is not for the faint of heart and warrants trigger warnings for rather graphic detail of sexual assault, I think it’s saying something when I find this not be the most gruesome of Karin Slaughter’s works. I appreciate that it’s a bit tamer than “Pretty Girls.” I found this novel to largely keep my interest and not drag on too long which I’ve found to be the case with a couple of other of Slaughter’s long novels. This was an interesting read that also included provoking commentary on sexual assault crimes. I thought the narrator for the audiobook was pretty good as well. A 3.75 rounded up to 4 stars ⭐️. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy for review.

This is a review of an Advanced Readers Copy of After That Night by Karin Slaughter! Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review! Out August 22nd!

⚪️ About
Fifteen years ago, Sara Linton’s life changed forever when a night out ended in a violent attack. Present day, Sara is a successful doctor, engaged to an awesome man, and has left the past behind her. Then one evening, she is on call in the ER, and battles to save a young lady’s life who has been violently attacked. This young lady’s assault seems eerily familiar to Sara’s, and it seems possibly linked to the past. GBI Special Agent Will Trent is on the case, and it seems like the past isn’t going to stay buried for long.

⚪️ My Thoughts
There was a lot of detail to this book and it has some long chapters to listen to. It is the 11th book in the Will Trent series, but can be read as a stand alone. The mystery was intriguing but there is a lot of mention of assault, so I would say to be advised of that before going into this one. I sort of guessed a little bit of some of the not so good people in the end, but even with that, it was an enjoyable mystery to listen to! Sara was a strong female main character dealing with a lot of tough stuff, and she had the support of her fiance along the way!

🔴 TW: Rape, murder, suicide

You will like this book if you like:
🥼 Detective book series
🥼 Past and present mysteries intertwining
🥼 Strong female main characters
🥼 Multiple POV

Will Trent, Faith Mitchell, and Dr. Sara Linton are back in the latest addition to the Will Trent series. When a patient comes crashing into Sara's emergency room with a situation all too similar to something in Sara's past, they are forced to explore what happened to Sara 15 years ago. Sara makes a promise to her patient and is determined to follow through, no matter what it costs her.

I am so excited to be back in the world of Karin Slaughter! I haven't read a ton of her books, but I will say I've thoroughly enjoyed the ones I have read or listened to. This is one of those books you won't want to stop reading or listening to and there are plenty of moments you'll be on the edge of your seat, especially towards the end.

Kathleen Early is a phenomenal narrator and if you are a fan of Karin's looking to get into audiobooks, I highly recommend checking her out. She narrates most of Karin's books and I enjoy when a narrator and author work together so much like these two do.

LOVED: When Jeremy stepped up. I hope we get to see more of him in the future!

OMG MOMENT: Everything at the end!

THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU IF: You love thrillers with twists that aren't obvious and will leave your jaw on the floor.

A big thank you to Karin Slaughter, Netgalley, and Blackstone Publishing for this advanced audio!

They're Back! In After That Night, Karin Slaughter brings back Will, Sara, and Faith (yippee).

In the latest installment of the Will Trent series by Karen Slaughter, Sara's past is the primary focus. When a young woman comes into the ER after being brutally attacked, Sara, Will, and Faith investigate. What becomes clear is that the woman's assault appears to be linked to the assault Sara experienced 15 years prior. The question on everyone's mind is how.

Twisty and turny, this mystery/thriller keeps you on your toes.

While I enjoyed this novel, I found the parts focusing on Will & Sara's relationship to be a tad sappy, which, in my opinion is boring as all get out. Though I'm not a fan of the couple, I like Will and really like Faith and hope that Faith becomes the central character in her own novel one of these days.

As a disclaimer, After that Night includes several assault scenes that may not be suitable for all readers.
3.5 Stars

I went into this book without reading the others, which definitely could skew my view on it.

This book seemed much longer than it needed to be. Things seemed to drag out a great deal, and a lot of repetition. I understand recounting facts from early, but it seemed to happen too often.

I also just could not feel an attachment to the characters. Even though this story was deep- I feel like I got a very surface level understanding of who Sara was.

Unfortunately, this book was just not for me. But if you’re a Karin Slaughter fan I’m sure you’ll love it!
