I really enjoyed receiving an ARC of this cookbook as I love baking and am always on the lookout for new baking recipes. I loved reading through this cookbook; it featured so many cool recipes that I had never tried out before and that all looked so delicious. I would definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone looking to try out some new recipes that will result in very delicious baked goods!

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - White Lion for the ARC! Loved this book - wonderful recipes, beautiful photos, and accessible ingredients.
What a lovely resource, filled with many good tips for baking on the cheap. A novel topic, and a very relevant one, too. I am a seasoned baker and learned a lot from this one.
The Thrify Baker was a wonderful and fun cookbook. I’m a huge GBBO fan so was so excited to have the opportunity to review her book. It did not disappoint. I loved the variety of recipes, from a delightful quiche to easy mug cakes and delicious cookies, her recipes are approachable and tasty. She even has some fun and funky flavor combos to check out if you want something new. In addition, the tips and tricks were really useful. I very much enjoyed this book and recommend adding it to your collection
I adore this book! As a fan of Hermine since GBBO, I wasn't disappointed. The mix of traditional and new recipes, along with helpful tips, is fantastic. It's clear and well-written, inspiring me to try recipes I wouldn't normally dare attempt.
I've really liked Hermine as a baker since I saw her on the British baking show and was excited for this book! There are some recipes that I certainly plan to make.
Thanks so much to Net Galley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Now that I have a toddler, a cookbook saves me so much time from having to come up with recipes or worrying if I have enough time to make what I want. I loved this cookbook.
While the book doesn't have enough unique recipes for me to feel like I need it in my already...extensive collection, I would definitely recommend this to others. I appreciate the idea of 'thrifty' bakes (though her rating may not apply outside the UK, a couple recipes would not fall under .65 cents/portion here in Canada!) and this book definitely came at the right time.
Thanks to NetGalley and White Lion Publishing for the advanced reading copy.
I always enjoy the chance to get to look through cookbooks before deciding if they're one I'd want for my own personal cookbook collection, so I very much enjoyed the opportunity to look through and rate this one. She was always one of my favorite British baking contestants, and I very much enjoy the recipes in this book. Also, especially with food becoming more and more expensive these days I appreciate that as the title implies, you don't need tons of expensive or fancy ingredients to bake the items in here.
I’ve never watched the Great British Bake Off before, but this cookbook was cute. The cover is simple, but I feel it matched the theme of baking and being thrifty. The cookbook had pretty pictures and a good variety of recipes.
A delicious collection of unique recipes perfect for any home baker. If you're looking for new recipes to add to your baking collection this is a perfect choice for yourself or to gift.
I adored this cookbook! Not your average recipes but not complicated and expensive ingredients either!! I can’t wait to work through most of this book! And there were pictures with every recipe!
I've been following Hermine on Bake Off already so when I saw that she's brought a book out I just had to have it. It's full of really clever recipes and tips for saving. My friends specifically like the easy section of mug cakes and chocolate chip cookies.
What a great set of recipes and wonderful photography. I love anything that promotes saving money so this was a perfect example.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of "The Thrifty Baker: Shop, Bake & Eat on a Budget" by Hermine Dossou. All opinions are my own.
This great book includes 65 delicious, affordable and impressive recipes, complete with gluten-free options, plus advice, tips and hacks covering many areas of shopping, baking and cooking in general. I found it very easy to understand and follow. I definitely recommend!
I am a big fan of The Great British Bake off and loved watching Hermine baking. She was one of my favourite contestants of that series. I was thrilled to see that she had written a Recipe book.
This book is good for novice bakers as well as more experienced bakers. It is well written and concise with easy to follow recipes.
There are lots of tips on how to shop more thrifty and cheaply. The recipes use easy to find ingredients, many of which you are likely to already have in your fridge or store cupboard.
This is an excellent book and I am certain that it will be regularly used.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
I love this book. I will definitely be treating myself to a hard copy. There are so many delicious recipes. I'm a huge fan of the fact that the ingredients used are ones that I actually do have in my cupboard or are easy to get and I love that Hermine has made recipes that won't cost you a fortune to make. Everything is easy to follow and the pictures are gorgeous. The mug cakes are a game changer.
The Thrifty Baker contains seven chapters chockful of yummy recipes and tips! There is also one chapter that discusses Dossou’s tips and tricks to make every pence (or penny) stretch even further. Along with her tips, Dossou shares some of her background.
The recipes throughout the book are marked according to their price per serving. The range used in the book is <65¢, <70¢, or <$1.85. The higher price point may be found on a recipe that is more indulgent (Spiced Pineapple Coconut Crumble) or would be more filling (Mince Beef Pastels). The lower price point contains more ingredients that are more likely to be sitting in your kitchen right now (Orange Drizzle Cake).
The seven chapters are ones that you would expect to find in almost every cookbook that focuses on baking.
Breads: yeast bread recipes
Cakes for Tea: think Victoria sponge
Biscuits & Cookies
Pastries & Tarts: mix of sweet & savory
Desserts: think carrot cakes and apple crumbles
Special Occasion: mostly variations on genoise sponge
Quick & Convenient: mug cakes
While this cookbook focuses on thrift, it doesn’t skimp on creativity. One of the recipes I tested from this cookbook is the Spiced Pineapple and Coconut Crumble. My husband ate 2/3rd of the pan in less than 24 hours. The best way to explain the recipe is to picture an apple crumble but swap out pineapple (fresh!) for the apple. My two taste testers agreed it was refreshing and not pineapple-forward. One of my testers all but licked the bowl clean, and he admitted he’s not a fan of pineapple. My husband has asked for this to be his birthday cake this year!
I look forward to trying more recipes from this book, like the Chai Butternut Cake, Samoa Cookies, and Speculoos Cookies.
Who would benefit from The Thrifty Baker? Everyone! The recipes are easy to follow and don’t contain complicated directions. The ingredients in these pages are ones you can find at any store. Doussu even mentions buying some ingredients at the dollar store to stretch your money further.
Run, don’t walk to your nearest store to pick up a copy of The Thrifty Baker! You won’t be disappointed.
The Thrifty Baker was an incredible baking cookbook filled with amazing recipes and beautiful photos! Honestly, after reading and trying every recipe in the book, you’d probably be ready to start your own high end bakery! It’s an impressive variety of recipes and tips and tricks!
