This is a cookbook for the busy and thrifty baker. The recipes are divided into occasions and the author documents well the procedure to follow as well as scrumptious imagery. I loved that the author organized her recipes as well as offer tips. If I must say I enjoyed the cinnamon rolls recipe and a unique take on banana cake.
Wow I loved this cookbook! Such affordable but yummy recipes! I like how it featured everyday recipes as well as single servings of dessert and also affordable was of making breads and cakes. Perfect for a beginning baker.
Beautiful pictures and such a great concept for a cookbook as baking especially can get very expensive very quickly. The bakes are elegant yet approachable and the instructions are clear with all possible translations for ingredients/measurements. I also appreciated the gluten free options! The recipes have a cost per portion breakdown and she offers lots of baking tips in general to not only help you save money but also to turn out the best bake. Nice addition to your baking cookbook collection.
Thank you NetGalley and White Lion Publishing for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.

The recipes are easy to follow with ingredients you can find anywhere, and the photographs are mouth watering. The Thrifty Baker: Shop, Bake & Eat on a Budget by Hermine Dossou is currently scheduled for release on September 12 2023. It offers readers sixty five delicious, affordable and impressive recipes, complete with gluten-free options, plus advice, tips and hacks covering many areas of shopping, baking and cooking in general. Filled with clever ideas and useful features, the book is written with a realism and empathy that comes from the heart, from a lived experience. It isn’t just a book of great recipes, but an essential manual for anyone baking today.
The Thrifty Baker: Shop, Bake & Eat on a Budget is a well written and informative cookbook. I loved the honest and real tone of the book, and the focus on not just cost but reducing waste. I thought the introduction with instructions on how to make things like your own muffin liners and piping bags was great, and the information on tools and ingredients are things that I might have known but those just starting out on their own are not likely to even think about in advance. I also appreciated that each recipe included all measurement systems- so everyone can use this book without having to do conversions. As someone that is always looking to do my baking in the most efficient way, both cost and time wise, I found all the information about the best use of the baking time and multitasking to limit waste of ingredients and energy to be helpful. I really loved that while there is a wide variety of recipes, most are ones that appeal to me and my family and normal life. Yes there are fancy items, but there are also hot dog pretzels and mug cakes- which my teenagers would love and can help make. I think this is a great book for bakers that are looking to learn, are looking to conserve, and just want to eat well with limited funds and waste.
The Thrifty Baker: Shop, Bake & Eat on a Budget is a cookbook that I just might be looking to squeeze into my overcrowded bookcase. If not, it is one I will be borrowing from the library to re read and make great use of.
I was initially interested in this recipe book due to the author who I recognise from GBBO. There are some nice looking recipes but I have to admit that I feel the book is just a bit bland that it was almost boring to flick through. Other baking recipe books usually make me feel excited to start baking, this one didn't leave me feeling inspired.
The thing I love about this book is that all of these recipes are smart recipes making use of all the ingredients without a lot of waste. This is the perfect book for bakers on a budget. The recipes inside look absolutely delicious and I can't wait to try them. Special Thank You to Hermine Dossou, Quarto Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy prior to publication in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. Thus book had some great recipes and gorgeous photos. I like that there is tips as well for each recipe. I also like that there’s a chapter for mug cakes since sometimes one just wants a bite and not a whole dessert.
The Thrifty Baker is one of my favorite types of cookbooks - one that acknowledges that readers have limited time and money, and that sourcing 12 expensive ingredients with short shelf lives only to use a tiny portion and waste the rest is bad. Few of these recipes are showstopper cakes that will astonish the guests at a high-end restaurant, but they are all practical, useful recipes that are make to create as little waste as possible while filling stomach with healthy, tasty baked goods. Especially excellent for those who, like me, teach themselves to cook using books, Dossou offers advice that will make a home baker more comfortable and efficient.
This was good and it kept me entertained throughout. It has such good and realistic recipes in it. I couldn't wait to try a bunch of them.

I love the Great British Baking show, and always jump on the chance to read and review cookbooks from anyone involved. Hermine was one of my favorite contestants, and I so badly wanted her to win. Her bakes were always the most elegant and beautiful! Her cookbook definitely does not disappoint! her style is displayed with beautiful bakes. Every image is mouth watering, her instructions are clear and concise. I like how the ingredient measurements go the extra mile with grams, cups and ounces. The amount and types of recipes exceed my expectations. I think an ebook does not do this justice, and cant imagine the hardcover will be even nicer. I really like the notes on how to make the recipe thrifty. Overall, great baking cookbook that I would definitely purchase for myself or a friend! I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Most bakers are always searching for mouthwatering dishes that they can make. Unfortunately, many of those dishes are expensive. However, Hormoine Dossou has presented fabulous desserts in her excellent cookbook, The Thrifty Baker: Shop, Bake & Eat on a Budget, for those of us who are budget conscious (and with the economy as bad as it is right now, who isn’t?). In this cookbook Dossou has early chapters with great hints on baking on a budget. After those helpful hints, she presents recipes that are unforgettable. Even though they are lower cost to make, no one will guess, because most bakers will find dozens of recipes that are absolutely appealing. Most of the recipes are for sweet desserts, but there are also a few savory dishes.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions, making it possible for both beginning and advanced bakers to prepare beautiful, picture perfect desserts. Dossou has also added comments at the beginning of each recipe which are helpful and interesting.
One of the best parts of this cookbook is the beautiful, professional photographs that show how fabulous the dessert can actually be. They show how each has been carefully and simply decorated (most home bakers can duplicate it easily).
All told, most bakers will love the ideas in this excellent cookbook. Most of us will want to bake almost everything and it will keep us baking new dishes for months, especially when so many are budget friendly.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

This book was around 3.5 stars for me. While thrifty is in the title and there are some tips on how to bake on the cheap, some of these tips really depend on where you live and how much space you have and overall may not actually save you money.
That being said this is a beautiful recipe book! There's some great photos and good recipes. There's a lot of standard recipes so the book is less about using cheap ingredients and more about being aware of your energy use, stocking up on baking items, and sourcing your ingredients. The recipes themselves look good and cover a variety of sweets.
This is a great compilation of bakes on a budget. It includes some British classics along with some basics and general classics. It's a great set of recipes.
Thank you for my eARC of this book. I absolutely love this recipe book! I love the premise, the recipes themselves and the layout & images. The recipes are all things I want to make and eat and there’s a nice mix of very straightforward and more creative recipe! Highly recommend this!
This book first caught my eye because Hermine Dossou is from The Great British Bake Off. While flipping through I was captured by the simplicity of the recipes, tips, tricks and thrifty ingredients. The instructions are well laid out for any level of cook/baker. There is a wide variety of savory and sweet recipes that will make you want to spend all of your time in the kitchen.
I am looking forward to making the Super-soft dinner rolls to go along with my beef stew and don’t get me started about the Ham and cheese brioche rolls! Every swipe of the page makes me want to make another recipe.
I am looking forward to getting a hardcopy of this book for my collection.
I want to thank NetGalley, Hermine Dossou and Quarto Publishing Group – White Lion, White Lion Publishing for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
This is a good baking book!
The recipes look so good (haven't had time to try them, sadly) and approachable. By that I mean the measurements come in ounces, grams, and cups, as well as "translating" ingredients like saying 'biscuits (cookies)', etc. That is always so frustrating with cookbooks so I love that Hermine thought about this and the international audience.
This is a lovely baking cookbook with all of the typical recipes that you would expect. What sets it apart is its focus on the cost of the bakes. The introduction includes tips on where you need to spend more money on equipment and ingredients and where you can take the thrifty approach. Also, each recipe includes an estimate cost per portion. And within each recipe there are tips for ways to swap more expensive ingredients for cheaper versions if necessary.
Beyond that, this is just a nice cookbook. The recipes include grams, ounces and cups/teaspoons, etc. There is a beautiful picture for each recipe (a must!). I wish the table of contents included a listing of the recipes within each section, but that is minor. The index at the back includes both ingredients and recipes.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #QuartoPublishingGroup for a free copy of #TheThriftyBaker by Hermine Dossou. All opinions are my own.
You will enjoy this cookbook. All of the recipes are so detailed even a novice like me can do them. I loved the cake section the best. The pictures were great way to showcase the food. The author made the most elegant recipes simple for me to understand and create, like the Yule Log. I love the conversions for each ingredient and knowing what equipment and every detail I need. Even better are the thrifty tips for the recipes so they people like me on a tight budget can make beautiful treats for my family. You will love this book.
