A great book for those looking to begin mushroom hunting. I just need a physical copy to take with me when we go out.
Really enjoyed the book from start to finish. Author wrote this with great pace. This book is now one of my top books of the year for sure. Loved every second of this book. Has Great Info to.
Informative read
I have friends interested in mushroom picking, and thank God they tossed what they had, dummies picked poisonous ones. I thought I would educated myself and head off disaster. This book showed me it's not as easy as one would think, and I don't think I would risk it. I'm glad I checked it out.
I requested and received a NetGalley arc to peruse gratis and give my opinion in the same
A comprehensive guide for any mushroom enthusiast, no matter how old they are!
The pictures and easy-to-read layout makes this a perfect guide.
I received this book for free from Netgalley for an honest review.
Very informative and great pictures to help identify. I would recommend
*I received an ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the free book*
I am a seasoned mushroom hunter and this book is not suitable for beginners at all. The general parts are well done and it has a reasonable approach to the risks connected to mushroom hunting, but I think it is incredibly dangerous to name but not to show the poisonous lookalikes or at least refer to them with a page number. Making people pick mushrooms and not having a picture of Amanita vera, for example, right next to it, is pretty dangerous. Same holds true for some of the other mushrooms. The guide also fails to help beginners to get a feel for the spectrum of colours that caps, for example, can have.
In general, I think you should accompany a seasoned mushroom hunter at first and not rely on any (!) books. This guide kinda gives you the wrong impression when it comes down to actual mushrooms, the rest is okay.
Sorry, but I don't think using this book is safe when it comes to mushrooms.
2 stars
This is a good mushroom foraging book in the company of many other great books on the subject. I had intended to do a detailed review of it on my foraging website, but it was archived too soon.
This book is filled with tons of useful information. I was impressed with the amount of information provided in this book, and do wish there had been a few more pictures/drawings. One main critique I have is there is a chart that breaks down where each mushroom is found; I wish this had been at the beginning of the section going over each mushroom so I could identify the ones in my region or have it as part of the description. This was overall a fantastic reference book!
This was an awesome guide for any beginners who are just starting out with mushrooms. The information was clear and concise, not overwhelming with facts. The pictures helped a lot. Would recommend for sure.
Mushroom Hunters for Beginners by Gary Lincoff is informative and contains gorgeous photographs of various mushrooms. Not only that but there are also useful charts and information on world markets (one of my favourite things in life!). The author helpfully points out different search areas including local parks and lawns, necessary gear, how to find the right habitats, mushroom field groups, seasonal guides, mushroom identification (toxic mushrooms are even more important to know than choice edibles), truffles and what to do with your bounty.
As a very experienced mushroom forager I am always seeking book recommendations for beginner foragers and will happily recommend this one. I have the fortune to live much of the time in white truffle territory in Istria, Croatia where even neighbouring Italians come to buy this very sought-after delectable product. What is more fulfilling than enjoying nature and learning about and finding your own food? Spotting your first morel, porcini, black trumpet or death cap is eye opening and life changing. Abandon any worries...books such as this one are a great first step to take in expanding your knowledge.
This guide is brief and does not include various views or spore prints of mushrooms which are critical to beginners. But it does contain several of the most widely-known mushrooms and comparisons with toxic look alikes. Fabulous inspiration!
My sincere thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Quarry and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this fascinating and useful book.
I recently started hiking and have been obsessed with the idea of foraging and learning as much as I can about mushrooms. This book is so easy to understand and the pictures are gorgeous. I can’t wait to use this in my next hike.
Clear and accessible language, filled with good photos that help show the different types, and I loved the charts that discussed where you can find the different types. The section on poisonous mushrooms was incredibly helpful as well, with the chart discussing the symptoms and treatment options of these types of mushrooms important and really homing in the point that the these are poisonous mushrooms. I enjoyed this book a lot and I think it is great for beginners.
I love mushrooms! I cannot believe how many different types of mushrooms there are out there. This is a great book for those who would like to go mushroom hunting so they know which ones are safe and which ones are poisonous. The pictures are clear and the description is great.
I received this book complimentary from NetGalley but all opinions are my own.
Excellently written, interesting, full of detail and really excellent photography. Excited to put this to use.
I'd rate "Mushroom Hunting for Beginners" by Gary Lincoff a 3.5 out of 5 stars. While the book offers valuable knowledge about mushrooms and foraging, I found the design lacking and noticed some photo repetition. Despite these drawbacks, the informative content made the read worthwhile.
The author Gary Lincoff is an American mycologist, but the book is relevant worldwide, he says, because:
“no matter where you are in any urban or suburban locale on the planet… the mushrooms of the lawns and backyards and parks are much the same, with a few local differences.”
The book begins with an overview of the culture of mushroom-hunting in various countries, then covers the environments where mushrooms can be found, from forests, to fields and gardens. Two-thirds of the text deals with identification of specific edible fungi, followed by a short section on highly poisonous types to avoid.
There are photographs throughout, but, to aid identification, I would have liked some clear line drawings of the parts of a mushroom, as well as details of how to take a spore print, for example. Nevertheless, this is an interesting and thorough book by an expert, which anyone would find very useful in hunting for some delicious treasures.
I love this mushroom hunting book as it gave a lot of great information for edible and poisonous mushrooms. There are very clear pictures, descriptions, and where/when you will be able to find them. There were even suggestions of other places you can find certain mushrooms, which I didn't even think about. Now I will have to look for them when I'm outside!
The part I loved most about this book was what to wear when you go mushroom hunting. It seems like common sense, but there is a reason why it is in this book and there is a reason why I liked it. Many books do not tell you how to dress as the books only tell you what to look for and maybe what to bring with you.
This was a very informative and helpful book for beginners and I think it is a great book for any mushroom hunters/foragers. I highly recommend it for anyone and everyone no matter what level you are.
Mushroom Hunting for Beginners is a wonderful introduction to the world of mushrooms, mushroom hunting, and mushroom identification. There's a special section for poisonous mushrooms as well.
This is a really amazing book. There is so much information about mushrooms here for the beginner to learn, from the way different cultures see mushrooms to how and where to look for them. The pictures are very informative, and the section on identifying different types is invaluable.
If you are interested in learning more about mushrooms or harvesting your own, this is a must-have book for you!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this eARC in exchange for my honest review on the book!

Not in my top favorites but we’ll curated and thought out. I would recommend it to more advanced mushroom hunters verse beginners. It lacks some thing I would look for in a beginners book.
"Mushroom Hunting for Beginners" is a refreshing and inspiring guide for novice foragers. From identifying edible mushrooms to safety tips, this book covers it all. It strikes the perfect balance between informative and enjoyable, making it a must-have companion for woodland adventures. I love mushroom foraging myself so i found this book a great refresher. My only negative was the volume of the mushrooms included. Happy hunting!
