I have read many books by this author and have given them 5 stars. This book deserves so much more!
This book is about Vietnam and the women and men who served. I don't give a synopsis of the books I review, as I prefer to have the story unfold as I am reading. "You don't belong - your'e a women - there were no women in Vietnam" this was the philosophy when women returned from the war. Government help was given only to those who served in combat and the women who served as nurses were not included. The way the returning vets were treated was disgraceful. It wasn't until much later that the vets received the recognition they deserved.
This book is my favorite of all the books I have read this year. I thank the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Oh. My. God. I am genuinely speechless! This book was just everything and more and there’s no way I can give it less than the 5 stars it absolutely deserves!

The Woman follows Frankie in 1965 as she decides to follow her brothers footsteps and join the army as a nurse to serve in Vietnam.
While this story is about Frankie’s experience in the war and her life after, it is also about all the other brave woman who put themselves in harms way in order to help others. And how their sacrifices can be forgotten.

Everything about this story was just perfect. I absolutely loved all the female friendships and all characters were so amazingly written that you could just feel every single emotion the characters felt. Im not even joking when I said it made me laugh, cry, get angry and so much more! And the story itself is so well written that you can tell a lot of research went into the writing process as the whole timeline is amazingly detailed!

And of course a good book needs a heart wrenching ending and this one will definitely give it to you. I wouldn’t have changed a single thing. I cried the last few pages and they were just a mix of sad and happy tears! this story will definitely stay with me forever as it was just the best type of book.

Side note: There are some love stories present but but this story is about so much more than than a woman and her love interest as it feels like the audience is breaking and healing along with her and her journey is just so amazing so try to not get too caught up on the love stories through out.

Kristin Hannah does it again - takes me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. This one will stick with me for a long time I think. The beginning was particularly fast for me - the second half I took a little more time on while we explored Frankie's traumas. Overall I'd rate this one a 5 star book, though I did get a little bit frustrated when "one more thing" kept happening for Frankie and toy with a 4 star rating. Great Alone is still my fave KH book, but this one takes a close second. .

I savored every single word of this hard and achingly beautiful story. lIt does what the best books make us do: think, learn, feel…deeply. And it’s a story that the world has needed for far too long. The women who served in Vietnam, who volunteered to serve our country and work tirelessly to save lives, more than deserve the gratitude, respect, and dignity this story offers.

This one cracked me wide open, something that has been happening over and over since I had the great honor to accompany my dad, a Vietnam Vet, on his Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. last fall.

What a gorgeous reminder this book offers, our stories matter, whether the world is ready to hear them or not. We must demand honesty. We must speak truth. We must remember.

This book was ine of the best books I have ever read, I knew going in with a Kristin Hannah book that I have high expectations a d she blew them all out of the water, it was raw, brutal, honest, heartbreaking, honest and showed light on the women who often get forgotten when it comes to war, the Vietnam War has to be a tough subject to write about an as a kid who gre up on MASH I was aware there were women in war i knew they were there, but how over looked they were and treated is a story that needs to be told. but the amount of research the author must have did with this book to make me feel like I was there I could see the story in ny head. I did not think Hannah could top The Nightengale, however she did this book is so so so good! Buy it, download it, gift it, talk about it learn from it. These women who served deserve to have their part of history known!

Just wow. This book is... monumental. visceral. important. I wept at the end. Kristin Hannah has done it again; this book will spend weeks on the bestseller lists when it releases next year.

Another story from Kristin Hannah that had me crying, amazed, shocked, sad and happy all in one book (as she tends to do). Phenomenal storytelling and was so happy I was able to read this book early.

The story of Frankie; a character I will never forget! The women of the war. The women of the Vietnam war- the stories untold, the nurses. The lives they saved, the lives they didn't. The PTSD after the war. The way no one wanted to talk about it. The way the women were treated by their fellow Americans when coming back.

I learned a lot from this book. I was captivated from the first page to the last. Another homerun from KH that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

This book took me on an emotional journey. I don’t think I’ll stop recommending this book ever! We know all about how our veterans were treated after Vietnam but never knew that our women had it so much worse….. and from our own VA and veterans at that. This book needs to be made into a movie or series asap!!!

From the writer of Firefly Lane. Prepare your ❤️. Kristin Hannah has a way of writing such real characters and stories that will live in your heart forever.

This book was just beautifully written. Frankie tells her story as a Vietnam nurse. I really enjoyed this pov of the Vietnam War. This was an emotional read so be warned, but it was so worth it. I couldn't put it down.
Kristin Hannah does a wonderful job of honoring house who served.

If you're thinking about ordering this, do it. You won't regret it.

Kristin Hannah is a new author to me. I heard her on the Elin Hildebrand podcast. I recently read Winter Garden and was hooked on her style of writing. She has a way of bringing the reader in and making you feel like you are living the novel instead of just reading it. Ms. Hannah is a master story teller and this novel about nurses in the Vietnam war was exceptional. I couldn't put it down. Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy.

This was one of the most vivid books that I have ever read. I feel that Ms. Hannah captured the visualization and the intense feelings that describe the feelings of a nurse enmeshed in the war then coming home from Vietnam in that era. I fell deeply into this book as it described the fear and tumult emotions, sites and sounds Frankie was witnessing for the first time. I keenly read as her life curled from coming from combat into the civilian world. That she seemed to not be able to find the help she so desperately needed and fell back into the old, comforting ways that she found during combat, as you can never tell me what they witnessed and went thru was not war. The book ended very open-endedly. I usually do not find comfort in endings like that, but this time that is what I felt. Comfort. Comfort that Frankie could overcome, though never leave behind her past, and have a (imagined by me) life she could find comfort and understanding in.
Thank you to NetGalley and to St Martin Press for allowing me to read this very profound book by Ms Hannah.

Wow! The Women by Kristin Hannah is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It tells the story of Frankie, a young nurse who served 2 years in Vietnam during some of the worst days of the war. By walking in her combat boots it gives one an appreciation for what the women who served during the Vietnam war had to endure both during the mass casualties they worked through and the lives they saved and lost, As well as afterward when she comes home and is spit upon and reviled as a “baby killer”, when all she tried to do was serve her country and save lives. No one wants to talk about it, and no one believes that she, a woman, could have been a Veteran of the Vietnam war. It wrenches your heart this way and that as Frankie goes through trauma after trauma, and makes you smile when she gets a break and has a chance to enjoy herself during the turmoil surrounding her and her friends. It makes you want to be there to welcome her home as the hero she, and nurses like her truly were. I feel as though this book has opened my eyes through Frankie and her experiences. Her struggles felt so real. Kristen Hannah hit the nail on the head with this book.
The Women has made me rethink my perception of my father as I knew him after he came home from Vietnam. I didn’t understand why he withdrew into himself and drowned his memories in alcohol, ultimately breaking up our family, until I read this book. I feel a new appreciation for what my father endured in Vietnam and my daughter, an Army nurse, went through while serving in the Baghdad ER in the Green zone of Iraq during the worst years of that war. I feel as though I were rereading the emails that my daughter sent me from Iraq. That's how real this book felt while reading it.
The Women will be a best seller, and should be made into a movie. It's that powerful.

The Women was such a beautiful book about friendships. I didn’t know much about the women who were in Vietnam, and learned so much from this book. The relationships between Frankie and her friends was just amazing. I can’t even imagine what those women went through.

This book was amazing! Kristin Hannah just keeps getting better and better! I have been reading her books for years and have always liked her books, but I love her historical fiction and this is probably her best.

This book centers around Frankie McGrath, an army nurse, who serves in Viet Nam and the plight of other women who were often unrecognized for their service and sacrifice. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and certainly knew about how the returning men were treated and the controversial nature of this war. I never knew about or thought about the women who were there. They may not have fought in combat, but they still experienced much of the trauma that the men did. To hear over and over again that "there were no women in Viet Nam" when they tried to find a support group or get treatment for their PTSD made them feel unrecognized and hopeless . Ms. Hannah brings all of this to light through Frankie and her friends. The first half of the book covers the experiences of Frankie and her co-workers' in Viet Nam and the second half the experiences after they come home. Ms. Hannah has an amazing way of developing characters that you care about and feel that you know. I think I will always remember Frankie and her friends. The references to the music, fashion, pop culture and political climate make you feel that you are back in the 60s and 70s. The book kept me engaged throughout and the ending was absolutely perfect. My favorite book so far this year!

Kristin Hannah writes novels that are memorable, and her latest book, The Women, is no exception. It travels the life of the women that meet in Vietnam and serve as nurses in the war. It is a very detailed story of their time together during the Vietnam war as well as their lives as they return home. It is a good story that brings to light the understated value of nurses in wartime. The Women is not a light, easy book, but rather thought-provoking and at times a bit heavy. However, it is a very good book that sheds illumination on the women that bravely served our country.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eGalley of this book.

It is clear that Kristin Hannah did
an extraordinary amount of incredible research for this book. I really did not know a lot about the women who went to Vietnam… she took a part of history and shined a light on it in an accessible and readable way.

About halfway through the book Frankie comes home and I found that her return and the struggle she endured with her ptsd was the most impactful and moving part of the story.

Recommend for any reader who likes historical fiction!

I have really enjoyed Kristin Hannah's historical fiction and this book was no exception! She is a master of writing about emotional situations that pull on your heartstrings and really make the reader empathize with the characters. I learned a lot about females who served in Vietnam (a topic that I had never given much though to before). If you enjoyed Kristin Hannah's other book Home Front (also about a female solder living with PTSD) you will enjoy this one as well.

THE WOMEN is a brilliant novel that tells the story of Frankie McGrath, a young woman who ships out to Vietnam to serve as an Army nurse. The horrors she experiences- and the bonds she forms - change her deeply. When she returns to the United States, she returns to a country that doesn’t support the war or believe that women even served. They belittle her experiences and Frankie begins to unravel.

While fiction, the novel pays homage to all the women who served their country during Vietnam but were largely unrecognized. I had tears on my cheeks after the last page, after reading @kristinhannahauthor acknowledgements. And that never happens.

Thank you to @stmartinspress for the opportunity to read an early review copy of THE WOMEN. It’s out on 2/6/24. Add to your TBR. ⭐️

I have read most (all?) of Hannah's books. Her historical fiction draws the reader completely into the time and place of the story, and her characters are believable and compelling. This book is no different.

The Women focuses on an topic that has not really been touched before -- the women who served in Vietnam during the war in the 1960s and 70s. There has not been enough written about that era and the impact of the war and the aftermath for those who served. I was in high school during the late 60s and vividly remember that time. Hannah has faithfully recreated the emotion and culture of the era, dropping in tidbits that only someone who lived through it or studied the time period carefully would know. These details kept me glued to the pages. I distinctly remember the treatment soldiers received upon returning stateside, the controversies surrounding the war, and the very vocal disagreements over our (the US) involvement. Again, Hannah has faithfully recreated those as well. Frankie's story is heartbreaking, the war action is vivid and sometimes horrifying (as it should be), and the aftermath will bring you to tears.

Although all the elements are there and I, admittedly, could not put it down, something does seem to be missing. There's a spark that was present in The Nightingale that I did not find here. Maybe I've just set the bar too high. Sometimes the narrative seemed to be just a repetition of the facts, a news story. I would still highly recommend reading this book. There are so few books about this era and almost none that include the women who served. This is an important book, and I can almost guarantee that you will be moved to tears. Hannah is quickly becoming my favorite author, and her historical fiction books are among my favorites.
