I know everyone (even me, from time to time) compares Peter Ash to Jack Reacher. But for my bottom dollar: Peter is the vastly superior drifter hero. Nobody can top Peter when it comes to competency porn (lol) and noble heroics without theatrics (the final clashes with the baddies are often plenty theatrical, but Peter always approaches those with steady determination/a distinct lack of histrionics, which is SO. DANG. SEXY). Also love how he's a solid one-woman man 8 books in, AND that Petrie has yet to fridge June to give his hero a new Babe of the Week/spice things up, because June is AWESOME in her own right, and a perfect partner to Peter -- BUT I DIGRESS. Once again our favorite vet is helping folks in need, and this time it's his BFF Lewis (and his family) who're on the line (even more high-stakes than usual!). With the popularity of recent adaptations of book series built-around wandering heroes, like Reacher and Tracker, this series has been a go-to rec for me with customers (and I really hope we get a Peter Ash adapt in the near future, too!).
There are few authors I look forward to reading more each year than Nick Petrie. The Peter Ash series has quickly become one of my favorites with its realistic characters, action packed plots, and lightning fast pacing. Can't wait for the next one!
Nick Petrie is my new favorite author and Peter Ash is one to read! I have bought this entire series for my library and recommend it to all my Lee Child/ David Baldacci readers who are looking for someone new. The story lines are continuous, but fresh. The action is believable and never fails to disappoint. I loved every word and cant wait for the next one!
Nick Petrie unleashes a gripping thriller featuring Peter Ash, a Marine veteran grappling with PTSD. When Peter’s friend Lewis calls for help on a bitterly cold Wisconsin winter night, Peter doesn’t hesitate—after all, Lewis has been his steadfast ally through thick and thin.
Their mission to aid Teddy Wilson, a former associate with a brain injury, plunges them into a treacherous blizzard, only to discover a scene of violence and stolen incriminating notebooks that threaten to unravel their lives.
Fans of the series already know Lewis as a leader of a clandestine group that takes down dangerous criminals. What Teddy has chronicled in his notebooks proves explosively dangerous, setting off a chain reaction of danger that threatens everyone close to Peter and Lewis, including Peter’s partner June and Lewis’s family.
Petrie’s skillful storytelling creates a vivid world where action and suspense propel the narrative through its 400-plus pages without relent. The characters are portrayed with depth and strength, adding layers of realism and emotional resonance to the breakneck pace of the plot. He masterfully balances adrenaline-pumping sequences with moments of humor and deep character introspection, making The Price You Pay not just a thrilling read, but a compelling exploration of loyalty, sacrifice, and the cost of justice.
This book would translate brilliantly to screen, capturing the intensity and complexity that makes it a standout in the thriller genre. For action enthusiasts, The Price You Pay is a must-read—I’m already eager to dive into more of Nick Petrie's work. A solid 4-star rating from me, with thanks to the publisher for providing a copy for review.
I am a huge fan of the Peter Ash series and was so excited to read this 8th installment! If you haven't read the series - start at the beginning because they build on each other!!
What I loved:
1. The background into Lewis life
2. Peter and Lewis together again - the bond they have is special!
3. It's a thriller, a love story and a redemption story that will have you turning pages nonstop!!

Book Review – The Price You Pay – Nick Petrie
I have read and reviewed all of Nick Petrie’s Peter Ash books and this one, “The Price You Pay” is probably the best of the now eight-book series. It is a real doozy! Whenever protagonist Peter Ash needed help in many of the previous books, he would always turn to his closest friend, Lewis – a former criminal – who never hesitated to help Peter whenever he needed it. But this time, Nick Petrie changes things up a bit in this story with Lewis being the one needing Peter’s help this time around. In this tale, Lewis asks Peter to help save his wife and kids from a past criminal associate who is seeking payback on Lewis from their criminal past. Matters get ugly and there is no way that Lewis can handle the ruthless situation alone. So, in steps Peter Ash – a magnet to danger and disruption – to help his closet friend resolve the unfortunate circumstance. The Price You Pay is a cleverly written tale totally immersed in intense violence, astute plotting, and planning, substantially developed personalities, and remarkable resourcefulness. Petrie’s prose was extraordinary. The story was extremely enticing and alluring. Peter and Lewis’ resolve of the occurrences was incredible, and Petrie told it so vividly. The narrative, the characters – good and bad – the uncertainty and the thrilling action were all exceptional. This is an amazing crime thriller novel of the highest caliber. A notable read that I highly recommend.
Nick Petrie brings to life a make or break moment for Peter Ash and his friends through heart pounding storytelling in The Price You Pay. Stuck in between a rock and a hard place, Ash must delve deep into the past to prevent losing everything.
Peter Ash is set to help out his buddy Lewis, who has been his savior countless times before. While checking on a buddy from the upstate, they find their keep in tattered and torn condition. After a previous mission their buddy Teddy had memory problems and wrote everything down in notebooks to remember. Now some hardened criminals have stolen those notebooks that account for most of their crews hits.
Lewis and Peter turn back to their dangerous skill sets to go find who is running the operation for revenge. Teaming up with June and Dinah, the team must run mistake free or it will cost them their lives.
Petrie brings everything he has in this determination soaked journey of life and death as the reaper is on the hunt. He highlights his alluring creativeness with June and a never quit attitude to Peter, while Lewis and Dinah are given unimaginable hurdles to overcome. Fragility and uneasiness seep throughout this normally confident team as any and everything that could possibly go wrong, shows face.
Given minimal resources and a past that haunts them, Petrie creates extremely precarious scenes that allows the team to seem 100% real and susceptible to the dangers of the task. This was a series changing story that sets the future for a whole new set of rules. Petrie has always been extremely creative and captures you with an energetic and impressive host of characters. Peter Ash is a powerhouse and he’s on a mission, watch out.
While Nick Petrie adventures are usually exciting,, the downward trending of Peter Ash's Wolf making an appearance is becoming disappointingly less and less common .with each new novel. Fans want action, the wish it was them with lightening quick reflexes coupled with the high morality-- of a sense of right and wrong- a strong compass keeping Peter going in the face of low odds and when when the chips are down.
This was another great addition to this series which I’ve always enjoyed. This gives us a lot more background into Lewis life before Peter. Many thanks to the publisher and netgalley for this copy for read and review

Nick Petrie continues a reliable thriller series in the latest Peter Ash novel. Trouble has a habit of finding Peter, interfering with his desire to live a quiet life with his wife June, the woman who helps still the noise of PTSD that would otherwise make it impossible for Peter to sleep indoors.
Peter’s good friend Lewis used to be the leader in a small group of thieves who specialized in stealing from criminals. The criminals who survived or the organizations for which they worked would like to get revenge, but they only know the thieves as the Ghost Killers. Cops think the Ghost Killers are an urban legend, but the underworld knows better.
After the Ghost Killers retired, one of their number needed help to recover from a brain injury. Teddy’s speech therapist told him to record every memory of his past in a journal. Teddy dutifully wrote down everything he knew about the other Ghost Killers and the crimes they committed. Unfortunately, he shared some of that information with his speech therapist (he was shagging her by that point and wanted to impress her). She turned out to be bad at keeping his secrets.
One of the criminals who lost money to the Ghost Killers learned about the journals. Lewis worries that if the journals are distributed throughout the underworld (or to the police), all of the Ghost Killers will be at risk of arrest or retribution. Yet the woman who wants the journals suffered a deeper loss than money, giving her a special motivation to find Lewis and the other Ghosts. She wants to go Keyser Soze on them. She hires a man to find the journals and to bring the Ghost Killers to her. The man is a former CIA agent. He’s good at his work but he learns that Peter and Lewis are formidable adversaries.
The Price You Pay is an intelligent action novel. Peter and Lewis stay true to the personalities they have developed in earlier novels. Peter is defined largely by his courageous efforts to battle his PTSD while Lewis is overcoming his dark past by making a relatively normal life with his new wife and her kids. Or course, life might not qualify as normal when Lewis is being chased by men with guns, as is often the case.
Petrie creates suspense by forcing Peter and Lewis to overcome obstacles as they track down the stolen journals and protect their families from the woman who seeks revenge. They use their wits in combination with their fighting skills, bringing a freshness to action scenes that go beyond improbable shootouts and tough guys hitting other tough guys in the throat. Their wives bring skills of their own to assist Peter and Lewis. The ending delivers the kind of tension that thriller fans expect. I’m pleased that after eight books, this series hasn’t gone stale. I hope Petrie can keep it going for a few more.

Jump aboard this lightning-fast roller coaster—a high-octane action thriller shrouded in mystery. This is the eighth title in Nick Petrie’s series involving Marine combat vet Peter Ash. He has often been compared to Lee Child’s Jack Reacher character. In previous books, he has been drifting about while trying to cope with his PTSD, although he has a longtime girlfriend—tough as nails and a resourceful reporter, June Cassidy.
Although this is my first foray into this series, I had no trouble gobbling this gem up as a standalone, due to Nick Petrie’s excellent insertion of necessary backstory. Peter is closely affiliated with his close friend, Lewis, who in the past ran an elusive crew of closely knit buddies who went after high-end criminals who eluded the police. Lewis had a strong moral code: “You only go after people the law can’t get.” They often found it necessary to stray into gray areas in their quest for justice. Many considered them noble, but their adversaries referred to them as the “Ghost Killers”—their reputation reaching mythic proportions.
This adventure starts out with a cryptic text to Lewis from the previously head-injured crew member Teddy: “Bad men are here. Need help.” Lewis immediately enlists the help of his friend Peter. They endure and travel through an epic snowstorm to arrive at Teddy’s isolated upstate cabin. They find the dead, bloodied bodies of Teddy’s four dogs in the yard, with his cabin on fire and the front door blown off its hinges. They find Teddy hiding in an adjacent tree, unaware of who stormed his cabin but realizing they took his cherished notebooks.
Part of his therapy, post-gunshot to the head, has been a protracted course of speech therapy.
Recommended by his speech pathologist, Leanne, in an attempt to regain his memory, is an active exercise by creating notebooks in which he continually wrote down his past memories—in the hopes of prompting further recovery. Unfortunately, these notebooks ended up being a source of intricate details involving “jobs” in the past—names, dates, and details that could put Lewis, Peter, and the crew members and their families in the crosshairs of their past enemies… seeking retribution for their past noble take-downs. They have to get these notebooks back and/or uncover who has read them.
Nick Petrie provides an action-packed narrative that incrementally builds suspense and trepidation as he intertwines multiple plot twists into an explosive denouement. He utilizes a colorful cast of characters to enhance the intrigue, as they battle wits with a cold and calculating ex-CIA loner, Jay Streyling, who proves to be an amoral killer, who will stop at nothing. But, the relevant question is, who’s his boss? And what are their relentless motivations to extinguish the crew? Action scenes are cinematic and expertly choreographed, with the results always in jeopardy.

Book #8 in the awesome Peter Ash series. Each book is an excellent reading experience on it's own so why deny yourself reading the first 7? This book finds the story twisted just a little. Instead of trouble finding Peter, it's his friend Lewis in a serious situation that requires Peter's particular set of skills. Lewis' friend has been attacked and a notebook full of information that could place their team in situations that would place them all in danger. As the tension rises and the pace grows, readers will find it hard to put the book down, so plan on a binge read. 5 easy stars.
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope There is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked!
Woah, I can't believe it's Peter Ash #8 already and as always I can't turn the pages fast enough!
Jack Reacher's author Lee Child once said "Lots of characters get compared to my own JACK REACHER, but Petrie's PETER ASH IS THE REAL DEAL."
I have to say, Peter Ash may have started loosely like Reacher, but Peter is no longer a loner. What makes this series so entertaining besides the terrific MC is Peter's close-knit friends who are like family. They are always there when Peter needs backup and let me tell you he's a trouble magnet.
The Price You Pay changes things up a bit. It's now Lewis, Peter's best friend who's in the hot seat. Lewis has been a star of this series from the get-go. Lewis gets a text from an old associate Teddy that bad men were at his cabin and needed help.
The bad men tried to burn his cabin and killed his dogs (NOO!! 😭) Thank god it's off the pages, but still. They took a notebook which Teddy jotted down things he remembers after suffering brain trauma from taking a bullet meant for Lewis. Now, they desperately need to find the people who took it.
Love the pace and this was intense! I find June's character much more likable too. I've been complaining about her a lot and I think she's not as bossy anymore. This is my first time listening to my pre-ordered audiobook so let me know if you feel that way reading. I read a third but switched to listening. The narrator Stephen Mendel was terrific too.
Highly recommend this series. The Price You Pay can be read on its own but I feel it's better to know Peter and Lewis from book one.
Thank you G.P. Putnam's Sons and Netgalley for my DRC.
Peter’s friend Lewis has always had Peter’s back, and in this installment, when Lewis’s criminal past comes back to haunt him, putting his old crew and his family in danger, Peter is right there to return the favor.
Loyal readers finally get to delve into Lewis’ mysterious past, including appearances by minor characters introduced at the beginning of this compelling series. The pacing is fast and there is plenty of action, and the freezing conditions are so well described, you’ll find yourself shivering through some scenes! As usual, this installment delivers, and now the impatient wait for the next one begins.
Penguin Group Putnam/G.P. Putnam’s Sons via NetGalley kindly provided me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This may be Nick's best Peter Ash book yet! This book is aptly named and lives up to the title. What begins as a mission to help a former member of L:ewis' past affiliation turns into a plot to exact revenge on Lewis' group the Ghost Killers. I absolutely loved this book. The pace is non-stop, exciting and I was on the edge of my seat flipping through the pages to the exciting conclusion. Nick Petrie is a master of the thriller genre and I am sad I have to wait another year for the next one. If you have not read the Peter Ash series, you need to rectify that as soon as possible.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review.
Nick Petrie follows up on his previous grand entry, The Runaway, with another smashing thriller, The Price You Pay. All of the boys have gone legitimate after careers in violent crime, drug confiscation, and robbery. Ray owns a restaurant, and Nino supervises a community center. All perfectly straight and exemplary. Lewis is in love with Dinah, and all is seemingly well until trouble comes calling. Somebody wants Lewis dead, and if his friends also die, so be it. Nick and the rest of his friends are first to aid Lewis and keep him alive. Violence, terrific action, and unpredictability follow, and the reader is always kept off balance. Nick Petrie again shows why he is one of the best thriller writers on the scene. Grab The Price You Pay and prepare to spend the next few days glued to your seat on a wild and crazy ride.
I really enjoy this series. Of course the level of violence and body count seems unbelievable. But the complexity of writing characters who have done bad things struggle with who they are and who they want to be is fascinating. And also it’s a lot of action adventure.
I was given a copy by NetGalley. Opinions are my own.
Another excellent installment in the Peter Ash series. I always loved the dynamic between Peter and Lewis. This novel dives more into Lewis's backstory, his time with Ghost Killers, and how your past can come back to haunt you. Highly recommend.
