What to do in Wisconsin with no snow in January 2024? Pick up Nick Petrie’s latest book, The Price You Pay. I am already a huge Nick Petrie fan, having read all the Peter Ash adventures. However this one one went by so fast and had many twists and turns making those cold grey WI January days go by so fast.

I loved that this story brought the whole gang together. If you’re familiar with Peter and June, Ray and Dinah snd the boys. And let’s not forget about Lewis’s old crew Ray & Teddy. Just a wonderful fast paced, WI based thriller. You will not be disappointed.

The Price You Pay is the eighth book in the Peter Ash series. This one did not disappoint. Peter gets a call from Lewis, his friend. Lewis needs help to rescue an old friend from his past.
They leave right away and find the friend’s house torn up and Teddy almost dead. His journals are missing. He wrote down all the terrible things he and his gang had done. Lewis was part of this gang.
So, Peter and Lewis go after the journals and bad guys. Lots of bodies and lots of action.
I liked that Peter did not hesitate to help Lewis. Lewis has always dropped everything to help Peter.
This one was more about Lewis- which was good to know about his past. I really enjoyed this book.

I am already a pretty huge fan of the Peter Ash series, so I was thrilled to be awarded the latest ARC. This book takes us on a fairly personal journey delving into the past life of Peter's best friend Lewis. We have been given bits and pieces of his past in the prior books, but not a lot of specific details.

Apparently, one of Lewis' past "friends" is trying to deal with past trauma and was told by a therapist to try to write down his memories in order to try to bring more memories forward. He does this and has a collection of notebooks with his memories. Unfortunately, after dealing with a gun shot to the head, his mental capacity is not all there and he forgets to realize that he should not have also put the real names and addresses of the rest of his crew along with each of their crimes -details included. Unbeknownst to all, Lewis' gang was a bit infamous and known as the Ghost Killers and there is a bounty out for information on any of these men.

The notebooks are stolen and this starts an action packed, drama filled storyline that involves both Lewis' and Peter's families - wives and children included. They are both running for their lives and also determined to get to the bottom of WHO exactly is after them. Many, many bodies pile up as they find themselves unable to return home and on the run.

As usual, I enjoyed every minute of this book. I already like Peter and June, and Lewis and his family are also wonderfully developed characters. I have learned to expect non stop action from Mr. Petrie and so far, he has always delivered.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

Peter Ash is back in the 8th book in Petrie’s series, and just like the first 7, the author has hit another home run. Peter receives a call from his best friend and now Wisconsin neighbor, Lewis, saying that one of Lewis’ old friends, Teddy, has called for help from northern Wisconsin. No hesitation on the part of Peter, and the two of them take off only to find that Teddy’s place has been ransacked and Teddy is barely alive in the freezing cold and snow. Many years earlier, Lewis and Teddy along with Nino and Ray made up a group that you might call avengers, known as the Ghost Killers, a criminal enterprise with morals. And now someone is looking for them. Moving from Chicago to the northernmost reaches of Wisconsin, Lewis manages to get Nino and Ray, both of whom like Peter are living an honest life these days, to come along with Peter, his girlfriend June and Lewis’ wife Dinah in a frantic search for who is trying to kill them. This story uses Lewis’ past as a backdrop but still has all the action and twists and turns of the earlier books in the series. Get ready for a pulse pounding, can’t put in down novel. My thanks to G.P. Putnam’s Sons and both NetGalley and Edelweiss for the ARC of this book. And my thanks to Island Book Store on Mackinac Island for introducing me to Nick and Peter.

Nick Petrie delivers once again with a homerun in the Peter Ash universe. Routinely one of my most anticipated books of the year, THE PRICE YOU PAY is a slight alteration to the normal Peter Ash stories, but it once again is filled with intrigue, excitement, dark tales, and a thriller ending. Highly recommend this one.

Peter Ash is back in The Price You Pay. In this book we get some more background on his friend Lewis and what he has done. Peter is as usual involved by proximity. I have been a fan of this creation by Nick Petrie since the first book about this ex soldier turned travelling carpenter. There has been a couple of books in this series that I didn't like very much but one or two out of eight is not something to get upset about. I love the charaters and the toubles Peter find himself in and this one was really personal for him and Lewis. Great to find out what Lewis did before they met. I must thank Netgalley , G.P. Putnam's Sons, Kaye Publicity and Penguin Random House for letting me read this exciting story.

Amazing twists and turns to this story that you simply could not anticipate!!
Peter and Lewis are old "working" friends who live near each other and are happily enjoying their
"retired mercenary" status until a crisis erupts with an old friend and off they both go into a
raging blizzard to try to rescue him.
The actions starts and doe not quit..
Forced to send their families into hiding while they chase down the hit men who are after them,
they call in former members to join the hunt.
Amazingly high tense suspense that does not falter with characters that are totally real and so well
defined you can almost see them standing in front of you.
Just a great thriller with a great plot, super characters and an ending that of course, leaves you
wanting more.
Next, please.

Peter’s super-tough-guy ex-criminal buddy Lewis asks for help to rescue an old friend, and of course Peter jumps right into danger without even waiting to find out what it’s all about. There’s danger from the elements as they drive through a dangerous snowstorm to reach the friend’s cabin and find unfortunate evidence that someone got there first. We find out that critical information from Lewis’s criminal past has been not only written down in extreme detail (as a sort of therapeutic exercise) but that the notebook with this incriminating information has disappeared. Lewis and Peter must get it back or risk Lewis’s entire reformed bad-guy current family life. The implausible premise relies on the aptly named Teddy, a sort of gentle giant who doesn’t always do the smartest thing but who is trying to be better for the sake of a woman. Of course all these reformed thugs have to engage in extreme violence for the rest of the book if they are to have any hope of resuming their peaceful new lives. It’s like the violent criminal gang version of those heist capers in which con men reunite for One Last Job. The focus is less on Peter’s struggles with PTSD than in the previous books, though that is still an issue for him. This installment is good for fans but probably not the best starting point for newcomers, who would benefit from starting earlier in the series for a bit more background on Peter and Lewis.

Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for a digital advance review copy.

Nick Petrie and his Peter Ash series is one of the most consistent as well most excellent series of thrillers being written today.
A special thank you to NetGalley for the ARC; this is not a paid review.
Just a note. The title to this book as well as the cover has been changed to The Price You Pay which is a much better title.
The skill with which Petrie weaves his stories is nothing short of amazing and with this, the 8th book in the series, you would think that there may be a bad book or one not quite up to par. With the Peter Ash series, that isn't the case. In fact, the weakest book may be the first. But it is so important to the overall story arc you can't dismiss it.
In TPYP, Lewis' past comes back to haunt him in a big way. For long time readers they will know that before going straight, Lewis had a crew known as The Ghost Killers. Essentially, a more vicious and ruthless Ronin Hood and his merry men. But, they only took out those that deserved it.

The Ghost Killers all went their separate ways and starting living normal lives with normal routines. Until one of the members of the group unknowingly, through his therapy opens a can of worms by putting all of the Ghost Killers exploits into writing in an effort to regain his memories.
The notebooks become a very dangerous thing to the members of the Ghost Killers with Lewis chief among them. He has built a good life with Dinah and her boys and does not want danger to come calling. Which it unfortunately does, with a huge bounty for any information about the Ghost Killers reaches the Dark Web. Someone with a very personal agenda wants the Ghost Killers dead and will pay any price to see it done.

This book just moves and even though I tried to savor it. It was over much too soon. A book from Nick Petrie is always looked forward to. Just as is Hurwitz and a very select group of others.

Whenever Peter Ash needs help Lewis always answers the call.–Peter wouldn’t be alive without him. Lewis–a former criminal of some repute–has turned his life around. I say some repute because his identity isn’t known but his crimes were. Lewis and his team would only target criminals who seemed to be above the law. Lewis ran his team with a strict moral bearing and non-negotiable rules of engagement and were feared by the criminally repugnant. Think a R-rated Robin Hood with a wee more violence and no Friar. Secrets don’t stay secrets forever and this one's a doozy. Lewis is in danger of losing everything he holds dear and can’t handle this alone. And there is no way Peter would let him. Repercussions be damned.

Nick Petrie changes up the dynamic a bit in The Price You Pay and it pays off handsomely. I read The Price You Pay in one sitting totally immersed in the mean streets of…Wisconsin? Never thought I’d say that.

Sure, this is a thriller of the highest caliber but it’s much more than that. It’s a redemption story. I dare say a love story. A your past doesn’t define you story. A story everyone can relate to. I also appreciate how Petrie takes a stigmatized condition–PTSD, addiction, mental health–and takes it head on. It grounds the story in reality making it feel more like “real life” despite the hail of bullets and rockets.

I love this series, Peter, Lewis –I love it all. Fans of CJ Box, David Baldacci, and Lee Child should check out Nick Petrie if they haven’t already!

My sincere thanks to G.P. Putnam’s Sons and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Price You Pay.

The latest edition to the great Peter Ash series is another action packed page turner. Great characters, a well paced plot, and a few intriguing twists kept me reading late into the night. This can easily be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the entire series starting with "The Drifter" to get the full development of the characters and their relationships. Highly recommended

Thanks to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam's Sons for an advanced reader copy.

My thanks to both NetGalley and the publisher Penguin Group Putnam for an advanced copy of the latest installment in one of the best thriller-adventure series out there.

As a bookseller my job is to help guide people to find well reading enlightenment. That sounds so much better than pushing content on people. There is a lot of diplomacy involved, and I have learned over many years of hiding my inner book snob, which I instead beset my co-workers with. I have a lot of favorites and tend to push them, but I do love introducing people to writers they are unfamiliar with. Sometimes I'll get a well I read that it wasn't me, and that's fair. Nick Petrie is an author I have never received a negative comment back. People ask me for a good thriller writer, kind of like Lee Child, or Brad Thor, Petrie's Peter Ash series is always my first thought. Peter Ash is like Jack Reacher, if Reacher actually get punched once in awhile, is my opening line. And it always seem to work. The Price You Pay is the eighth book in the series, and one that continues to up the stakes for the characters, both physically and emotionally, in a series that has never had a bad book.

Peter Ash is a veteran with PTSD, a particular set of skills in carpentry, and a magnet for finding trouble. Lewis is Ash's best friend, a family man also with a set of skills, and a past that Lewis is doing his best to have the world forget. Ash is awoken by Lewis making coffee and sandwiches, for a long trip that Lewis has to take. An old member of Lewis' crew called in trouble. Ash of course accompanies Lewis and they find a burned cabin, and a whole new set of troubles. Lewis was once a very bad man, leader of a team who robbed from criminals, a team that was spoken of as a legend. But now someone is looking for the man behind the legend, and everything that Lewis has made of himself is in danger of collapsing, or being destroyed. Neither Lewis, nor Peter Ash will allow this to happen.

A book not only full of acton, derring-do and gun porn, but a book that makes one think about a lot of different things. Can one ignore the past a person, because of the person they have become. Can a person who admits to doing monstrous things, be worthy of redemption. And what is vengeance, and where does it stop. Petrie has a interesting style in that chapters alternate the points of view of different characters, major, minor, even the bad guys. This allow readers far more insight into the characters, their motivations, even secrets they are keeping from each other, and mostly from themselves. One of the big theme, besides vengeance again, is love in the book. Lewis loves his new family and will do anything, even revert to the beast he never wanted to be. Ash loves Lewis, and his girlfriend, and is willing to risk all, even if most of this is because of actions that Lewis did as a criminal. One usually doesn't get much to think about in thrillers outside of oh I wonder how the good guy will kill the villain. Petrie makes his characters hurt, bleed, make mistakes, and also something rare for a thriller series, change. Ash in this book is not the same as he was in the Drifter, the first book. And it makes for a fantastic read.

Recommended for thriller readers, action junkies, Streaming executives wanting a new show for their channel. And people who like books where their heroes get knocked down, get up again, and strive to be better. A great series. One doesn't need to have read the others, but I recommend it, as one is missing out on some great reading.

“Everyone gets to choose their own story, choose who they want to be. So like, who do you want to be?”

SUMMARY
No one can outrun their past. That’s the lesson Peter Ash’s friend Lewis is about to learn the hard way in the 8th entry in the Peter Ash series; THE PRICE YOU PAY.

Once upon a time, Lewis was a very bad man, who ran a crew called the Ghost Killers. They robbed those the law could not touch, drug dealers, and gunrunners, and sometimes they left bodies behind. In the present, Lewis is a very different man from the one he used to be. He’s got a wife, two kids, and a die-hard friend in Peter Ash. But just because Lewis has left his criminal past behind, doesn’t mean the past is done with him.

When a former associate, Teddy, reaches out that he’s in trouble, Lewis calls on Peter to help him check in on the man. What they find are the smoking ruins of a cabin, Teddy’s beloved dogs dead, and a whole host of trouble. It seems that Teddy has been writing down the story of the Ghost Killers and now the notebooks full of incriminating secrets about Lewis’ past crimes are in danger of being revealed.

Now Lewis has to figure out who’s sending professional killers after the notebooks and how he’s going to keep them from taking away everything he loves. Lewis and Peter must find the notebooks before the secrets they contain put all their lives in danger. But they’re fighting against an unknown enemy, one who will do whatever it takes to make sure the Ghost Killers pay for their past crimes.

THOUGHTS
Nick Petrie has created an amazingly strong family around Peter Ash. Each character in the series from Peter and Lewis, to Dinah, Miles, Charlie, and June vibrates with life. The characters and relationships have evolved from the first Peter Ash novel, THE DRIFTER, becoming richer and more authentic. THE PRICE YOU PAY is much more Lewis’ story than Peter’s although it’s still very much a signature Ash novel.

I love that THE PRICE YOU PAY gives voice to the many sides of Lewis. Here Lewis doesn’t shy away from his past, he grapples with guilt and recriminations about the choices he’s made, but ultimately like Peter when the people he loves are in danger, he doesn’t hesitate to embrace the cold, ruthless man he used to be. Lewis and Peter are both complex men, who love equally complex women, and while the story is primarily focused on the male characters, the women are presented as multifaceted, three-dimensional figures essential to the narrative. The storyline is tightly woven, with fast-paced action and unrelenting tension. THE PRICE YOU PAY hits all the right notes, delivering an engrossing thrill ride for fans of the Peter Ash series.

Both Lewis and Peter emerge as intricate individuals with intricate romantic entanglements. Although the primary focus is on the male characters, the women in the story are portrayed as multifaceted, three-dimensional figures integral to the narrative. The storyline is tightly woven, with fast-paced action and unwavering tension. Fans of the Peter Ash series are in for a treat as "THE PRICE YOU PAY" hits all the right notes, delivering a compelling and immersive experience.

RECOMMENDATION
5 stars. THE PRICE YOU PAY is another exhilarating thrill ride and an extremely satisfying read from Nick Petrie. For readers new to the Peter Ash series, THE PRICE YOU PAY can be read as a standalone, but I strongly recommend starting at the beginning. It’s well worth the journey to see how Peter and Lewis became part of a family.

Nick Petrie doubles down on pace and The Price You Pay delivers like a gut-punch. If there's a break in the action, it's only because the characters have to breathe. This latest Peter Ash installment grabs you in the first minute and doesn't let go - something we've come to expect from Petrie and he does not disappoint here.

A thrilling sprint to the finish caps off one of the most important lessons every criminal ought to learn, and one by which the Ghost Killers live: you don't mess with family.

Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel.

I received a free digital copy of “The Price You Pay” by Nick Petrie through Net Galley. Thank you to the publisher and author, and ,of course, Net Galley.
This is a review from one who is a fan of this author. I have read all the novels in this series and enjoyed every one. “ The Price You Pay” fits right in with the others ; it is fast paced, tightly plotted, suspenseful and violent. This time the violence hits close to home, with the explosiveness of a RPG the front door.
Summary: Peter Ash works restoring and rebuilding older homes. He also takes the occasional interest in helping people who have trouble the law cannot fix. His friend and coworker Lewis team up to deal with the underworld Types. This time Lewis asks for Peter’s help. He tells Peter that Lewis past has come back to hurt him. Though Lewis is straight today, mostly, he once headed a crew of take down men that got the name, Ghost Killers. Their target were other criminal gangs who dealt drugs, ran guns, trafficked in women and or children. The gangs were attacked , their assets gathered up , headmen and gunmen killed. But now, although the Ghosts Killers have been long disbanded, the past has come to do payback. Lewis needs a helping and hand Peter is it.
Action , violence, tension . Really nasty bad guys.. This book is not one that you will be able to stop reading..
Cautions: No sex . There is no time for it . As noted lots of violence.

Read the synopsis of this and thought the plot/excuse for the story was lame. If it had said Lewis’ past catches up with him and puts his family in danger it would have prevented me from dismissing it even though I’d enjoyed most of Nick Petrie’s other books
When I received an email from NetGalley asking me if I wanted to read it I had to think for a couple of days before I decided to give it a go. After all many writers, James Lee Burke comes to mind, often start with an unrealistic premise but manage to turn it into a reasonable novel. More importantly I thought that if I refused this one I would not be given the opportunity to review others.
Thought the series was getting a bit stale but if you ignore the basic plot the story thunders along at nerve-racking speed packed with thrills, action and a touch of sadness. It’s certainly entertaining and some readers will like it but unfortunately, Peter Ash has transformed from a soldier/carpenter with issues into a criminal associate with standards. The book is far too long, the formula has reached breaking point and the plot has been reduced to the level of pure comic book.
Sorry to say but I have read just over half the book and am about to abandon it. I can’t take any more it’s just ludicrous. Peter Ash’s time is over and Nick Petrie must find new characters to write about. The Price you Pay is not challenging enough for the average reader. We’ve heard it all before. It’s hard to write a successful series but readers deserve better than this.
I won’t be reviewing it on Goodreads or twitter as I don’t like to be negative towards authors I like.

"Lewis has helped Peter Ash out of more trouble than Peter cares to remember. So he doesn’t hesitate when Lewis asks a favor in return."

I LOVED this book! I have been a very longtime fan of this series. The plotting and action of all of these books are fantastic but what really keeps me coming back are the characters and their relationships. You find yourself rooting so hard for Peter and Lewis and June and their families. So yeah, these books are wild and fun reads, but they're more than that. And that's probably why this one hit so hard.

This one takes us back to Lewis's origins and his original crew. But his past has come to haunt him (and most importantly, his loved ones) and he feels like he can't dig himself out this time. Enter Peter & Co. The love these guys (and gals) all have for each other makes these books brilliant and has you turning pages deep into the night.

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Lewis is Peter Ash's closest friend. Lewis lives a good life now, with his wife and his two stepsons. But, once upon a time, Lewis was a bad, bad man, who ran a crew called the Ghost Killers. They robbed from those the law could not touch, drugs, guns and sometimes left bodies behind. Unfortunately, one of those bodies was an eleven-year-old boy, who wasn't supposed to be there, but he got caught in the crossfire. Now, that boy's mother is coming after the crew. Lewis and Peter must protect those they hold dear and take out a Mafia member who is working assiduously to bring them all down. And right now, she has the upper hand. First, Lewis has to figure out who is after him and then he and Peter have to get the crew back together for one last foray into the dark world of killing. Another great adrenaline ride from Nick Petrie.

Lots of excitement and adventure. I had never read any of these novels. I especially enjoyed the wives and they're contributions to their overall survival.
