Freida McFadden is quickly becoming one of my fave thriller authors. I adored the housemaid series and cant wait for part 3! Ward D has been one of my fave books for the year.
I was super excited when I seen the locked door on Netgalley!
Freida's writing is so fast paced, I finished this book in a day I couldn't put it down. I loved the short, quick chapters. I did guess one of the twists but there was plenty more that I didn't!

The Locked Door by Freida McFadden
Dr. Nora Davis is the daughter of a serial killer. Twenty-six years ago, her father, Aaron Nierling, was arrested and is now serving eighteen life sentences in a maximum-security prison. Nora changed her last name to Davis and moved to another state to avoid any association with her father. She has built a successful life for herself working as a doctor/surgeon and is a partner of a medical practice. She loves her job and lives for it but suddenly one by one her patients are being targeted and killed, they all share the same look as her father favoured, young females with blue eyes and dark hair, and when their dead bodies are found they are missing a hand, also her father’s victims all did. Who is targeting Nora? No one knows of her past except the police and they suspect Nora is responsible.
I enjoyed this book very much! I must admit I have loved every book I have read by Freida McFadden, they are all wonderful thrillers and very hard to put down.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Poisoned Pen Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
this is the secendt book i read by Freida McFadden, and i will say it is even better than the first i read (do not distrurb) i wily like the way she write, and the way she build the story op, and i did not gues the big twist in the end.
As always Mcfadden has created the perfect thriller, We follow Nora the daughter of a famous serial killer as she is accused of a set of copy cat murders. This book has some of the most unexpected plot twists, the moment you think you’ve got the answer something changes. The Locked Door had me experiencing such chills that I did have to take breaks while reading. So excited to get to reading her whole backlist!
It was the 2nd chapter in when I realised this story was familiar to me, checked my Goodreads account and saw that I had read it in May 2022. I remember being enthralled then, and it was a fast paced thriller that kept me guessing. Not sure why it’s being re-released but scoring it 4 stars per my original review last year.
Ahhhhhh this might be my favorite Freida book! I didn’t see the ending coming. I don’t know if I will ever get over this.
I really appreciate how Freida writes characters that live with traumas but still have normal-ish lives as jobs.
Nora Nierling, the daughter of serial killer Aaron Nierling, is losing her mind. Twenty six years after her father murdered nearly 30 women, and severed their hands, Nora is being framed by someone close to her, for her own patients murders. Is it Dr. Phillip Corey, Nora’s business partner and fellow general surgeon? Is it Brady, Nora’s old college flame who’s recently resurfaced in her life? Or is it someone else? Why would anyone want to frame her for the murder of her young patients? Nora knows it isn’t her father, he’s been incarcerated for almost three decades. Nora changed her name twenty six years ago, to break all ties with her father and mother. After Nora’s mother committed suicide Nora was raised by her maternal grandmother, and she never looked back. Nora did not ever tell anyone who she really was. Now she was Dr. Nora Davis, and nobody knew her sorted past. So how could someone be hand delivering letters written by her father in jail, to her home? Even he hadn’t seen her and he didn’t have any idea where she was. Nora knows someone close to her is aware of her relationship to Aaron Nierling, and what he was guilty of doing, because someone is copying his modus operandi! Someone is killing women and cutting off their hands, just like Nora’s father had done to his victims! Will the person framing Nora be satisfied with just ruining her life? Or will they be murdering her too? This is a fast paced, page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat. As usual Frieda McFadden never disappoints. Thanks Net Galley, Tantor Media and Frieda McFadden for this eARC read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading more McFadden novels soon. This was so good I had to read it again on publication day. Happy publication day Frieda on 10/2/23!!!
5 stars!
My favorite Freida McFadden to date! I had a suspicion that Harper was the killer, BUT I had no idea she would turn out to be Nora's sister! I loved that twist. This was so well written. I suspected Brady and I suspected Phillip and then had a small inkling that it was Harper, but she was my last suspect.
I loved the addition of Harper's POV at the very end of the book and I liked that Nora had an "aww" moment at the end of the book as well with Brady and his daughter. I thought that was such a sweet addition. On to reading more of Freida McFadden's books!
Thank you NetGalley, Freida McFadden, and Poisoned Pen Press for this book in exchange for a review!
Frieda has done it yet again. Do yourself a favor and go grab this book right now! This book with keep you flipping pages desperate to find out what’s really going on.
Nora is a successful surgeon trying to keep her past a secret. Her father is behind bars for the murders of numerous women in Nora’s childhood home. However, things quickly change when Nora’s female patients begin turning up murdered in the same way her father was infamous for. Someone must know who she is and want to frame her…..
Book Review : Dr Nora Davis is an accomplished surgeon, but her past has come back to haunt her. For the past 26 years she’s been able to keep her secret, she’d moved towns, changed her name and avoided any long term relationships where the past may come up. But now the bodies of young women are turning up, murdered in the very same way her father, a serial killer currently locked up for life, murdered his victims. Now the police think she may have had something to do with it, because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
I really enjoyed this book, done in true Frieda McFadden style with all its twists and red herrings. I did eventually suspect the ending but not until close to the finish and my mind kept switching from one potential suspect to the next. I also love when a thriller is done well you are questioning everyone and I mean everyone. I love the ease of read of this book, which you could potentially read in one sitting (if you have the freedom to do that!), but even still I had it read in just over a day. For lovers of Freida’s thrillers you won’t be disappointed and for anyone only starting to dabble in Mcfadden’s world, this would be a great one to start with. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thankyou to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I went into this book expecting some twists and turns. What I got was far more thrilling than that. The suspense behind the MFC Nora’s story both previous and current was edge of your seat. I could not put this book down. I thought I had it all figured out and WHAM plot twist. The way this author keeps you intrigued throughout the entire book is great. I will not look at locked doors the same!
Another thrilling and riveting book by Frieda McFadden! Its short chapters and fast paced plot keeps you hooked on Nora’s story from the start. This book was full of twists and turns that have you trying to solve the mystery after each chapter. If you have read Frieda’s work before, you expect to know where the plot is headed, however she always manages to surprise you with a shocking plot twist ending!
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for providing me with a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Okay this is the second book I have read of Freida McFadden’s and I think I have a new favorite suspense author. I just loved this book. It has intrigue, mystery, twist and turns galore, and is so fast paced. You are sucked in on page one and it is super hard to put it down. The flash backs are amazing. They do such a great job leading the reader down so many different paths. Characters really shine through in this book. You will not be disappointed. I can’t wait to recommend it.
Thank you so much to Poisoned Pen Press and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
I honestly could not have guessed the ending and the twists! I enjoyed the story and I really thought it would’ve went a different way. I did enjoy the last chapter at the end!! It did a great job of adding another twist!

The locked door
By: Freida McFadden
Publication date: October 3, 2023 (rerelease)
“Some doors are locked for a reason…”
When Nora is 11 years old her dad is arrested for being a serial killer who has been keeping women locked in their basement. 26 years later and Nora is a doctor when suddenly her past patients are being murdered the same way her father’s victims were killed.
Let me start off with what I liked about this book:
- [ ] Nora was a great fmc
- [ ] Fast paced
- [ ] Great twist
- [ ] Love Frieda’s writing style
What wasn’t my favorite:
- [ ] Some of my questions weren’t answered at the end (but I also liked that aspect)
Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for gifting me this ACR in exchange for my honest reviewer.
Nora Davis is a successful surgeon with a solitary existence now. But when she was 11 years old, her father was put behind bars for murdering women in their basement, some of the murders going back two decades. With her dad behind bars, Nora changed her last name and deliberately keeps personal relationships at arms length. Then her patients start to die in copycat killings to her dad's MO, and the killer is planting evidence in her house. Or is she the killer?
Another delicious page-turner from McFadden. Lots of twists and turns - some expected, some of them I never saw coming! Fun read!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced digital reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review!
Another fast paced, psychological thriller by Frieda McFadden! Nobody knows that Dr Nora’s father was a serial killer, killing his victims in the most brutal way possible. He has been behind bars for years, but now Nora’s patients are being murdered in a very similar way to her dad’s killings. Is this just a coincidence? Can Nora figure out who is killing her patients? Another 5/5 star book by McFadden!
Years ago, "The Handyman" walked the streets of Oregon capturing and torturing his victims. The basement was off limits to all except for family man Aaron Nierling, but why? After he is caught, his 11 year old daughter Nora is left with the emotional scars that followed the event. Fast forward to the present, Nora's patients are being targeted and murdered in a similar manner as years before. Who could be committing these crimes if Aaron Nierling is locked away?
I loved this book and honestly thought I had it figured out only to be completely shocked several times throughout the book. I really enjoy Freida's writing style and truly is captivating and leaves you wanting more. This is no exception! I zipped through this book very quickly.
This book is being republished tomorrow, October 3rd, 2023.
Thank you so much to the publisher Poisoned Pen and author Freida McFadden for this ecopy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this thriller! Always appreciate shorter chapters. Ending was surprising but not shocking. Loved the dual timeline and how things played out in flashbacks. Helped give that unreliable narrator vibe.
