I was really into this book in the first half, but as soon as I figured out what was actually happening, I was honestly disappointed. I've only read two Freida McFadden books, and both have felt like they were stretching for a twist that just did not make total sense and aren't realistic. I do like Freida McFadden's writing style, and she does have a way of sucking you in, I just am not a fan of her twist endings.
This book is amazing. It definitely keeps you guessing. I love Frieda's book and this one won't disappoint.
Nora's father is a serial killer. Nora becomes a doctor to help people, but her past begins to catch up with her.
Read this. You won't regret it!
I always enjoy Frieda's books! There's just something about the way she writes that keeps me enthralled and The Locked Door was no different.
I really liked the way she started the book. The prologue had me hooked.
She kept me guessing the whole way through. Once I thought I had it figured out, she'd write something that made me doubt myself and she kept that going all the way to the end. I didn't suspect the ending at all, which is usually not the case with thrillers and mysteries that I have been reading lately.
I will say, the one thing that did bug me a little bit was how Nora didn't seem to remember things that are seemingly unforgettable, like dating someone and why you broke up with them. I've never forgotten anyone I've dated, especially if its was a few months and I know why I've broken up with all of them. That part just wasn't very believable.
Otherwise, it was a quick read just like most of her other books. If you are a fan of Freida's you'll enjoy this one too!
You know it’s going to be a good when you’re hooked after reading only the prologue. I could NOT put this down! I had to finish it all in one sitting.
Thank you NetGalley & Poisoned Pen Press for sending this book for review consideration.
I think this is my favorite McFadden book so far- sort of a "You" meets "Dexter"- thriller with a twist.
The locked door is about Nora who has lived under the shadow of her fathers crimes for the past 26 years. Her father was known as the Handyman serial killer who had over 20 victims, now 26 years later someone is killing again and trying to pin the murders on Nora.
So the writing was fantastic. Freida McFadden is an amazing author. It was so easy to get absorbed in the book and was a really quick read for me.
What I did not like was the plot. For a suspense thriller there just wasnt a lot of you know, suspense. There was little going on in the story besides the main murder and only a few moments of true danger. The character of Nora herself felt bland and though I am sure some parts of her personality were kept hidden to provide twists, I never really found her believable.
I did like the epilogue but the ending twist did not stand out for me.
The locked door is good for thriller fans looking for a short read and a somewhat unpredictable twist.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read a copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Nora's serial killer father was arrested when she was a child. Now she's in her thirties and living her life until bodies start showing up that reflect his victims. Nora needs to find out what is going on before she goes away for crimes she did not commit.
This book had me thinking and questioning my assumptions until the very end. A fun little thriller to lose yourself in.
I read this book a few months ago, and reread for Netgalley.
I love Freida McFadden. Her books are always a quick, easy, entertaining, and sometimes nail-biting read.
Thank you, Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley, for the advanced copy of The Locked Door.
This was a good one! The chapters were nice and short which I always love. I feel like the story just seems to go faster when the chapters are shorter and more concise. I was guessing a million different things in this book and I got absolutely ZERO correct guesses. That's when you know it's a good one!! A twisty thriller that put Freida McFadden on my must-read list!
Nora Davis is a surgeon who tries to keep to herself. She is quite successful at that endeavor until one of her female patients ends up murdered in the same manner that her father used to kill his victims. Coincidence? Maybe, but highly unlikely, when a second woman is found. With a nosy detective on her trail, Nora will have to try to solve this crime before she goes down for it herself.
4.5 ⭐️ (rounded up). This is my 3rd book by Freida McFadden. Did I really like it? Well, I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours so I think that’s a definite YES! I love this authors writing style. It’s hard to put the book down because it keeps your interest from beginning to end. It was very twisted and disturbing…like a train wreck you just can’t look away from. I also enjoyed how the chapters switched from past to present. Not really sure I can say I liked Nora. There were times that I did and other times when she really annoyed me and the decisions she made were just ridiculous. I really liked Brady a lot. As far as the twist at the end, I am proud to say that I did figure out before the big reveal who the killer was BUT I was surprised with the added twist involving that person. (I can’t say because I want this to be a “spoiler free” review).
So why did I knock 1/2 a star off. There was something that really bugged me (yes I admit I’m being really picky with this remark) but it was when Nora claimed to not remember why she broke up with someone in high school…but then later when she finally remembers she says “It was probably the best relationship I had ever been in. I had never felt quite so connected to another person”….ummmm if you loved him that much you would clearly remember why you broke up.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more by Freida McFadden! Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Locked Doors" by Freida McFadden is a psychological thriller that kept me on edge of my seat. Nora, is a surgeon AND the is the daughter of a well known serial killer.
The book is filled with surprising twists and turns amd will keep you wanting more.
This started out ok but got on my nerves 😬 just irritating plot and repetitive things happening. And the twist I didn't really feel impressed with at all, so just not the book for me unfortunately.
*SPOILERS INCLUDED*
I wanted to like this book so badly, but I just couldn’t. This is my second book by McFadden and it seems she only writes books with unreliable narrators and “surprise” female killers. It was too predictable.
This was my first Freida McFadden book and I devoured it in one day. It follows Nora, whos father was a notorious serial killer. She has made herself a great life after his arrest and her mother's suicide. But someone is recreating his signature murders and the police have their eyes on her. Has she followed in her father's footsteps or is it copycat?
I was hooked from the first page. From past to present, Freida was exemplary at keeping you on your toes until the very last page. The ending was shocking and something I was not expecting. As soon as I thought I had everything figured out a twist came and had me questioning everything. This is a MUST read!!
Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Frieda McFadden is becoming one of my favorite authors. Her novels are so engaging and full of surprising twists. My book club loves to read her books, so I will likely get to read this one again.
Frieda always has a way of drawing me in, this book is no different page turning, attention grabbing and twists I never saw coming. Love her work can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you so much to Freida McFadden, Hachette Book Group, and NetGalley for this ARC of The Locked Door. I’ve read a lot of thrillers and this one truly had me guessing until the final chapters. I love McFadden’s writing style and her medical background made this story line incredibly realistic. This was only my second book of hers to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was so invested in this book that it actually made me a little anxious/on edge when reading. My only holdback from giving it 5 stars was that it look me close to halfway to get fully invested in the storyline and I feel like the main storyline happened within the last 30% of the book. Overall 4/5 stars but a really amazing read! I definitely will recommend this book to friends.
The Locked Door was overall a quick Freida Mcfadden read with page turning suspense. Unfortunately, this book fell short for me. The plot twist at the end was easily seen. While, as usual I was happy to read any Frieda McFadden book, this was not one of her best. Overall, just okay.
Having read many of Freida McFadden's previous books, I was expecting a fast paced, easy read with plenty of unexpected twists and turns. I am happy to say I was not disappointed. The story revolves around Nora, a physician who is the daughter of a serial killer. Since her father is currently in prison, Nora is very concerned when one of her patients ends up dead, killed in the very same manner has her father's victims. I can't give much more detail as I don't want to spoil anything. I would recommend this to anyone who likes psychological thrillers. After you finish, go find more by McFadden. You won't be disappointed.
How would you feel if you found out your Daddy was murdering women in your basement and now, 26 years later, similar murders are happening again?
This was my first McFadden book and I really enjoyed it! Her writing style is perfect. Fast paced, short chapters, and an interesting plot.
I really enjoyed the dual timelines and learning about Nora's past. To grow up as the daughter of a famous serial killer has got to be tough! I liked the chapters that were from her childhood because they read like they were written from the personality of a child. I also didn't know if I could trust Nora, which made the book suspenseful.
Overall, the story was well written and had a few good twists! I will definitely be reading more of McFadden's books. If you like serial killers, dual timelines, and quick reads, this is a book for you.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC to review. This book is available now!
