Freida McFadden is the queen of fast paced, entertaining thrillers. If you’re looking to bulk up your reading goal, most of her books are daily or 1-2 day reads. “The Locked Door” follows Nora, who grows up to be a surgeon after learning that her father was not the man she thought he was. Now that she is an established surgeon in a private practice (and one name change later) she dedicates her whole self to being nothing like her family, a copycat is on the loose + they know who Nora is. This book kept me sucked in from the beginning, and while I don’t think the payoff at the ending was as shocking as some others I’ve enjoyed more by FM, it was still an entertaining read. I think this book could have been a tiny bit longer for more time to connect with the characters, I felt like I missed out on the typical “AH HA” feeling from lack of connection with most of the main characters. 3.5 stars rounded up.

This was such a good book!, it kept me on edge the entire time reading, I had to pull an all nighter because I was so intrigued.
We get to see Nora and her life as the daughter of a serial killer, how everything goes down when murders start to happen and the police suspects it’s her, how she deals with it as well as seeing parts of her past.
Can’t say much more of the book without spoiling it; It was such a ride reading this, first I was trying to figure out who the killer could be and then I got my suspect and I couldn’t forget him till the very last when he was a victim. All the twists and turns were so unexpected, you know since the beginning that something’s gonna happen but still takes you by surprise every single time. One of my favorite books by Freida McFadden.

WHAT WAS THAT PLOT TWIST OMG??? This is my first Freida McFadden book ever and trust me, it will not be the last, as the last few chapters truly got my head spinning trying to figure out who the killer is, and I was STILL wrong. The back and forth from present day to 26 years added more to the mystery, it truly would keep you questioning if the main character did inherit her father's traits or not. To be honest, if it wasn't for work I would've devoured this book in one sitting.

Omg again Freida blows me away. I loved the twist and I didn’t expect it. Usually I solve the mystery pretty fast but oh man not this one. She just has such a good way of writing stories and having people question everything

🩸 The Locked Door 🗝

Some doors are locked for a reason...

The Locked Door starts with us learning about Aaron Nierling, a narcissist and psychopath who has killed at least thirty women and is spending his life behind bars carrying out 18 consecutive life sentences! We also learn that The Locked Door is his daughter, Nina's, story.

We meet Nina, who now has another last name 26 years after her father and mother were arrested for the gruesome crimes of all of those women. She receives a letter from her father every week, which she rips up before reading, and she runs a practice with less than likeable at times character, Philip. Nora's life would be pretty normal, right, if it wasn't for the genes she inherited and the fact that her female patients who look very similar to her father's victims weren't being found dead with a nod to her father's MO. Nora has managed to hide this side of her from her colleagues, love interests, and sometimes, herself. This is until Nina gets the feeling that someone could be following her...

The Locked Door very cleverly flashes from the present day to 26 years prior, the unfolding events before Nora's father is found to be the murderous monster that he is. I found these added additions to the storyline fascinating and tension building. It had that compulsive unreliable character edge to it, which echoed throughout the chapters of the main storyline. We land on the suspicious mountain where EVERYONE could be the person behind the present-day killings - this alone will leave you white-knuckle-gripped to the page.

I really enjoyed the dip into the genetic link between killers - is that urge inherited? Is it just a potluck? Is life really what you make of it, even with that trauma and bloodshed drenched in your history? Freida has written a tense, intoxicating psychological thriller, one that had me all consumed and obsessed, racing through the chapters Until the very final set of break-neck twists and fireworks. I was left with some *hmm* questions, and a feeling that I would have loved more from the wrap up, but then again, isn't that a sign of a great ending? Wanting more? Will Nina come back in another title? Will we hear from the characters again? 🤔 The Locked Door was an extremely atmospheric, fab slice of psych thriller which I advice any thriller loving reader buys and reads IMMEDIATELY!

This was my first Freida McFadden book though I've heard so much about her over the past couple of years.
I found The Locked Door to be a fast paced thriller that kept me turning the pages until the very end to find out what was going on.
I didn't find any of the characters to be overly likable (and not in the fun way that some characters can be unlikeable) but I still was anxious to see how the story played out.
Please find attached my spoiler free youtube review video for more fleshed out thoughts on the story.

Loved this one! We love our queen, Freida. I had the twist of this one all wrong, but I loved it. This is a re-release!

Nora’s father was a serial killer. He is currently in prison for his murders of over 30 women. Nora has done everything she can to disconnect herself from that part of her childhood. Then 26 years later, copycat murders start happening and Nora is questioning everything and everyone around her.

This one kept me until the very last page! Perfect read for spooky season.

Thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and the author for an ARC of this book. This book will be re-released on October 3rd, 2023 ☺️

Another shocking ending by McFadden! Seeing more of the family of a serial killer was a great approach. The inner termoil Nora went through and how 2 kids from the same parents can be so different was wonderfully done. Brady was so good for Nora! I love a second chance romance! The only thing that I didn't like was how back and forth she was. I should tell them... no I shouldn't.... girl if you would have told them it could have changed things!

The Locked Door is a thriller that kept me intrigued till the very last page! The chapters are told in the main character Nora’s perspective from the past (26 years earlier) and the present. She is now a successful surgeon and her dad is a notorious serial killer who killed women in their basement 26 years ago. Although some parts of the story were predictable, I did not predict the ending- it is wild! If you are looking for a fast past thriller that keeps you hooked, I highly suggest this book! Thank you NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and Freida McFadden for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of The Locked Door in exchange for my honest review! I am excited to see the new cover of this novel :)

This is a pretty good thriller! Nora's dad is a serial killer and she'll do anything to avoid being connected to him. Everything's fine until copycat murders start happening. The twist at the end was awesome!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review!

Nora is a successful surgeon. She has worked hard to get where she is, after a rough childhood. Since her father went to jail for killing many people, Nora has changed her name and done everything she could to distance herself from her past. But now her patients begin dying mysteriously, in similar circumstances to her father’s victims. Someone is setting her up, but why?

Freida McFadden always blows me away with the twists in her books and this one was no exception! I have read almost all of her books and this easily may be my favorite. If you enjoy thrillers, you will LOVE this one! Thank you to Netgalley, Poisoned Pen Press and Freida McFadden for the review copy! This book will be re-released on October 3, 2023. This review will e shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly.

Solid 4 star but then... Freida did it again!

I love a Freida! Always a fun read. Nora's Dad is an infamous serial killer and what did she inherit from him?!? Nora is definitely unique and keeps you guessing the whole time. One of those books you think you know but then Freida proves you don't!

The door is locked for a good reason. However, this book lacked a bit of character development for me. We only get to know small bits about everyone that isn't the main character which makes all of the possibilities of the "who dun' it" difficult to really process. You just don't know enough for any of the twists to be twisty.

This story follows Nora who is the grown child of a serial killer. She is now a surgeon and one of her patients die in a similar manor as her father's victims. Now she has to defend herself and figure out who is behind the current killings. The story is told current POV's and by flashbacks. The flashbacks are chilling and they give the impression that this woman could just very well be the killer. You start to wonder if she is just like daddy or is she being framed and if she is being framed who is framing her. At first you think that it could be a man that she is close to doing the framing (or is he the killer) then the book changes directions and you think it is someone else. The story keeps you on your toes guessing who the bad guy is. The ending was surprising and was unexpected. This book contains all the elements of a good thriller. Engaging characters, plot twists and a ending you don't see coming.

What can I say other than Freida is AMAZING. I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of this book on NetGalley and once I picked it up I could NOT put it down. I may be biased as i’m really into Freidas work these days but I literally finished this book in two days. The book will keep you guessing throughout the entire thing with its twists and turns! I first thought it was Nora but then the ex boyfriend comes into the picture and she recalls why they broke up ——- “The Handyman”. If you haven’t picked this book up yet please do!
