Thank you, NetGalley for sending me this wonderful e-arc. This isn't my usual genre but I really like this story. It was the perfect length and the story was very well crafted. Cant wait to read more from this series. 3.5 stars.

This was such a dark and disturbing tale. I had such a difficult time reading the awful things the characters were going through. I had an even harder time trying to connect with them when no one spoke for at least 100 pages. A lot of the pages were just empty nothingness, which I can see why the mangaka would want to do that for this manga about war. However, I felt it made me distant from the characters and the story.

I didnt like how this novel made me feel and I think thats entirely the point, right? Because it has an impact in me although I dont know Im going to be here for the next volumes. I dont think so.

This is a really gripping graphic novel and, if you like end-of-the-world survival stories, this could be for you. I agree with other reviewers: it perhaps isn't the best choice if you get squeamish, but I didn't find these bits too bad. The images are black and white and are often split several times and this makes some of the more gruesome bits a little easier to stomach. I also found that this 'chopping up' of the illustrations really adds to the feeling of the unpredictable, haphazard world that the boy and girl now inhabit. I really liked both the boy and the girl, despite neither of them saying much and I shall look forward to the next installment in their journey.

A beautiful, wordless tale of survival, friendship and more. Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this book!

A world where no one gets hurt.
No one feels hatred.
And no one is lonely.
Is such a thing possible?

Thanks so much to IZE Media, and JH for this Manga ARC, it's another one you don't have to wait for it's been out 3 months ago, i got approved really late for them on NetGalley, and i think they even archived them now.

This one is weird, i can't determine how good it is, and yeah Good not Bad, This is not bad by any stretch of the imagination.
But how good?
I choose 3 stars, for me the story was lackluster, for a 370 pages story, we really didn't have much going.

We Can only hope that he's not a bad person.

<spoiler>Boy finds his mother dead with her brain all over the pavement, it's zombie apocalypse it seems, everyone is running, army is shooting people, and dying...
i am growing to hate all armies and their very existence i swear.
Boy meets girls, meets old mentally ill man, Mentally ill man attempts to rape the little girl, and gets stabbed by the boy, boy and girl run away, yeah that's pretty much the story, add lots of frog eating, and the protagonists looking at each other, observing...
</spoiler>
Oh and i have to declare after seeing the end, i don't believe Sera Nova 🤣

The art i give it 5/5 BUT, again how good is it? at moments i felt genius looking back at me.
Fucking brilliant, i never saw anyone do that before, now tasteless individuals, who are so used to the same pattern of art, they are incapable of recognizing any different kind of art, will struggle with this.
But seriously putting out 370 pages in 1 volume, you had to innovate, and make a system where you don't have to put too much effort, so comes the scratching or scrabbing? not sure what the right word would be, but the art in the beginning for anyone other than the mc.
it conveyed the story, we saw what was happening, now if this was a way shorter manga, i would have called it lazy, but it's not lazy in this case.
Then there is the emotion panels, Fuck! some of them were just great, specially The last scene involving the old man, one of the most powerful scenes i have seen in any manga period.

As he lay still, the horrors he had witnessed, tormented the boy, playing in his head, Again, And Again, And Again, It seemed to him that the night would never end.

In nights like this i wish to cease to exist.

The meaning of existence, and the value of life, are nothing but illusions people create on a whim, only to trample them beneath their own feet.
Life simply exists And life simply ends.
He too will Gradually disappear amid the obscurity of existence.
The boy knew this to be the truth, an undeniable fact.

A mostly wordless story that tells so much through the images. Nearly everyone is dead. Two children find each other. Danger is all around. And then with the stranger that follows them. Death and loneliness continue. A dark story of the evils that happen in war.

The Horizon Volume 1
By JH
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC copy for an honest review.
The Horizon is a story about death and war through the eyes of a young boy. The artwork really reflects this and shows the horror of war, it is very raw. It is a quick read as most panels are wordless.
It was simple but very powerful story, it probably would not be for everyone.
Rating: 4 Stars

The artwork conveys the horror of war and death. It is edgy, haunting and conveys a sense of unease. Two children walk through death and destruction followed by a weird man who they do not trust. We are not told the wider story all we see is the perspective of the children. This is only volume one and who knows what will happen next. Great artwork but an intensely dark story.

This book has just become one of my favorites.
I was intrigued by the synopsis, but I was swept away by the book. I don't even have words to describe how impactful this book is.
It is a raw story, full of human emotions that demonstrates loneliness, acts of affection, concern, fear and love.
It's a book that touches our soul because it focuses on the human side, the human emotions and how we deal with them.
And the illustrations are simply stunning. They make the book! They let the story breathe, they give us time to feel the characters and the emotions that surface on the page.

As soon as I opened the book I understood it would be a book that I would love, but when I reached the end, I realized how good this book is.

I'm completely surrendered.
I need the second volume.

At first it seemed to me that the synopsis did not say much, that it left many loose ends, but the reality is different. It turns out that it explains very well what this manga is about, which is a post-apocalyptic story where two children try to survive. What it doesn't tell us, however, is that it's an experience in which you are completely immersed.

Art is what takes center stage in this first volume, which in addition to being creative is also experimental, betting on a style where the focus is sometimes on the landscape and sometimes on the characters. This kept the reading interesting from beginning to end because it was not only about knowing what was happening to the characters but also feeling what they experienced.

It is true that I would have liked more development in terms of the script and that there was not so much emphasis on art. There was a moment when I felt that the story was not progressing at all, although the immersion of the reading was maintained at all times. However, the ending gave it a touch of drama quite effective in creating interest in the next volume.

In short, a psychological horror story that grips you from start to finish. The art matches the dark tone of the story, giving it an oppressive feel that works in its favor. It's a simple story, but with clear ideas, scenes that impact you, and more than one plot twist that was impossible to foresee. Definitely recommended for lovers of light horror.

Simple yet powerful. The lack of dialogue is made up by very powerful art where no words need to be said.

Excited for Vol 2!

A deeply disturbing story of a boy and girl trying to survive the periphery of a war. A quick read as most panels are wordless but maintaining a strong sense of dread the entire time. Grotesque imagery is very prevalent, especially at the start, not for the faint of heart at all.

3.8/5

This read was very intense.
The art is very graphic and raw and same goes for the story.
Despide the almost 400 pages, it's a very fast read, around half an hour.
This is because most of the pages are non texted and just pictured. The drawings tho, speak for themeselves and leave very little space for imagination.

This is the story of a boy and a girl, who lost everything and everyone and are left alone in a dangerous and horrid world full of threats. We follow them in the first part of their story, from how they lost everything, how they met, till how they are doing everything in their power to survive out there. We follow their struggles, their survival skills and their ability to live alone.

When we think they finally esacaped, the story is abruptly to what will become V2.
Definitely not for everyone, and not for the ones who get easily impressed.
As I said, the drawings are very graphic and explicit.

This is the re-issued edition of volume 1 of The Horizon. Without question, this is a brilliant graphic novel on the horrors of war featuring two children as the protagonists. As such, it includes specific and multiple depictions of violence. The art is more suggestive than gory, but these images are almost more haunting.

Small spoiler: the novel opens with a young boy surrounded by those violently killed, including his mother. His innocence is depicted and destroyed as he tries to put her brains back inside her skull. This is the beginning of his journey which continues as he meets a young girl approximately his age.

While this is no rainbow unicorn story, there are incredible moments of hope and the fundamental contemplation of what makes human beings human.

I would encourage folks who read this slowly over time, but with some breaks between sections to wrestle with the ideas and implications present.

Thank you netgalley for providing me with an e-copy of this manga.
The story follows a young boy who is left alone in a dying world due to war. The boy meets another young girl and they travel together. This illustrates very well the human condition, the consequences and the impacts of war on people from the view point of a young child.
This is a much read!

Really atmospheric and I'm interested to see where it goes from here?

Also if you're someone who needs content warnings, please seek them out-- the gore is pretty obvious from the get go, but then something else I was expecting went that direction so! Take a care.

The Horizon is an account of two kids wandering after (war? genocide?) a slaughter that kills so many people around. We don't know the details in volume 1, just that many are dead and many will keep dying. The sketchiness of the art makes for great atmosphere, especially how it changes in the more dramatic moments.

Even knowing this started as a WEBTOON i haven't seen it there, so I think I would prefer the formatting in the physical edition rather than how the ebook for the ARC was laid out.

Thank you to NetGalley and Ize Press/Yen Press for the ARC borrow in exchange for this honest review!

The art in this was really special, it had an atmosphere of its own. I liked the story and enjoyed reading it from start to finish. Recommended.

Review to come late September to blog/goodreads/etc. I would love to do it earlier but August is mostly a blogging-free vacation time and September is almost all filled up already.

I received this book from Netgalley/Yen Press in exchange of an honest review.

I was very curious about this one, I knew it would get dark. The cover alone screamed that, but the blurb also made that clear. Still, I couldn't resist reading this one and yep, it was very dark. Very sad. But there were also moments of hope. Very very small pinpoints, but sometimes you saw something that resembles hope.

In this one we meet a boy in a war-torn country. What exactly is happening we don't yet know, maybe in later volumes we find out more about the country and why it is in this state, but for now we follow the boy as he tries to find safety. Tries to find hope and happiness. From the start the book is gruesome. We see how the boy is able to hide, thanks to his mom, and then he sees all the people there get shot. Including his mom. Cue scene with him trying to get her brains back in her head. Yup. I told you this was going to be dark. From there we travel. Travel and run. Run run run. As things are sometimes silent... but sometimes there are guns and violence. I was happy for the boy that he eventually found a companion, a girl around his age that was also on the run. I do wonder if the boy had made it this far if he didn't have someone to talk to. To care for. For her to care for him. For each other to watch each other. I found myself rooting for these two. For them to survive. To not give up even if everything was fucked up. Everything messed up. Death surrounding them always.

The man? I found him very spooky and scary and I was very much on my guard around him. Just like the boy. He didn't trust that guy. He was wary. And blame him. He is a child. His mother and everyone he knew got killed. Danger is everywhere. And here is a man who is making strange notices, eats frogs alive, just doesn't seem to sleep. I found him so sus. While I could understand that the girl wanted to give it a chance, I was just no no no-ing at that. Girl, I get that you want peace and happiness and everyone to just fucking get along, but this is a strange wild man, you are a girl. You should be on guard. I was just constantly hoping that I would be wrong. That the guy was actually nice. I won't spoil it, but be prepared.

The ending, NO NO NO NO you cannot end this one like this. I was so happy that x happened and now this happens and the manga volume is over. I just need to know what is next for the kids.

The art was magnificent. Quite a simple style at times, but I do think it fitted very well. I love how dark it was and how it captured the darkness of the story.

All in all, a very dark, at times depressing, often shocking, very OMG nope manga/graphic novel that I would definitely recommend. But be ready for things.

Great manga! Very unique, minimalistic in many ways but at the same time so dense and gripping! I recommend reading it!
