A day goes horribly wrong, and things get worse even when you dont expect them to... this is what happens for Katherine and Tom, ex's on quite the holiday journey. This was an easy, quick read, and i really enjoyed the book. I've enjoyed everything I've read by Lauren Layne, I like her style of writing.
Thanks to Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing for the gifted book. All opinions are my own.
Katherine is an ambitious NYC attorney vying for the promotion her firm always grants at Christmas. And that's the ONLY thing she I looking forward to this Christmas season. But when she has an accident and has to be monitored for a concussion, her ex-husband is called because she never did get around to updating her emergency contact. Now she has to agree to head to Chicago with him for his family's Christmas.
Tom has plans to propose to his new girlfriend on Christmas Eve, but when he get's presented with taking care of Katherine, he can't leave her in the lurch. But of course this trip cannot go smoothly, and as they run into one roadblock after another, their emotional GPSes may be rerouting.

What a fun read! I normally hate the "Are We There Yet?," trope but this one nails the humor and heart so well. I think because the travel mishaps made Katherine and Tom deal with the reasons their marriage failed and realize their own faults. I liked the themes of reconciliation and personal growth. And their chemistry and banter was top notch. What a fun holiday (but not too holiday-ish read)!

This is a closed door, kisses only rom com. It does have adult language.
I absolutely loved this book! A humorous and heartwarming story that follows Katherine and Tom, a divorced couple who have been avoiding each other until an accident lands Katherine in the hospital and Tom is called because he is her emergency contact. The hijinks that ensue is pure chaos and fun!
Emergency Contact definitely has a healthy dose of angst and raw emotion because it centers on a second chance romance, This story is full of hilarious moments that can only be found in a romcom! The quick wit and hilarious barbs had me laughing so hard!
When Katherine's ex-husband is called after she gets in accident because she never updated her emergency contacts and actually shows up at the hospital she wants to send him packing but concussion protocol stipulates that if she wants to be released someone has to be able to take of her. The last thing Tom wants to do is bring his ex-wife home for the holidays especially since he plans on proposing to his new girlfriend on Christmas Eve. But how could he possibly leave her hurt and alone in a hospital? Can the two of them survive this unexpected reunion?
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for the eARC.
I can always count on Lauren Layne to deliver a fun rom-com and Emergency Contact, co-written with Anthony Ledonne is no exception. While a bit over the top at times, this is a quick, delightful read that kept my interest from start to finish.
The book Emergency Contact was an enjoyable read. I would recommend any book written by Lauren Layne and Anthony Ledonne. Happy Reading!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely.
A holiday romcom that feels like you’re watching a movie from the 2000s. While I didn’t fall as hard as I hoped for this one it was a cute read
I really enjoyed this one for a holiday story with substance. I have recommended this to readers who enjoy a holiday story that is a little more edgy than a Hallmark movie. I feel like this would make a great movie with two leads who are full of witty banter and a compelling story. Katherine and Tom are a couple you want to see succeed. All of their misadventures make it a can't put down. I was interested to see that the authors are a married couple - I believe that is what gave the dialogue such a zing! I look forward to another collaboration.
This was a fun read, but sadly not one of my favorites — and I'm not 100% sure why that is...
Even still, it was an enjoyable story as Katherine is forced to face the holidays with her ex-husband who is about to propose to his new girlfriend. They both miss each other, but a lack of communication is what seems to have pulled them apart once before. Will they let that happen again before it's too late?
I loved reading this for the holidays, I just wish it had been a bit faster in pacing. It felt like their journey dragged on — more so than was necessary, in my personal opinion. But it was amusing to see everything that could go wrong actually going wrong on this trip of theirs.
Tropes:
- holiday romcom
- second chance romance
- enemies to lovers
- sweet romance
- mutual pining
Y’all! MY WHOLE HEART. This book was a cozy warm hug that filled me with holiday JOY. I will hands down read + love anything that @bylaurenlayne writes. So I was ecstatic to find out that she and her husband co-wrote this holiday novel! Told from dual POV, this is the story of Katherine, a lawyer focused on making partner and Tom, her ex-husband focused on proposing to his new girlfriend on Christmas Eve. Divorced for several years, the two are foisted back together again when Katherine suffers an accident and Tom is still listed as her emergency contact. Katherine can’t be left alone due to her injuries and Tom won’t miss Christmas with his family and soon to be new fiance. What follows is a hilarious story of hijinks (think Planes, Trains and Automobile vibes) as the two navigate traveling to Chicago from NYC during a blizzard two days before Christmas. Along the way, they settle up old miscommunications, meet some colorful characters + fall back in love with one another. I’m not typically a fan of second chance romance but WOW did this love story work for me. There was so much tenderness, communication, banter, chemistry and swoon that I couldn’t help but root for these two! I appreciated how sensitive subjects of grief and forgiveness were handled as well.
Thank you Blackstone Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own!
I absolutely loved this one! It had such witty banter. I enjoyed the Christmas feel without the cliche Christmas references. It was a breath of fresh air in a Christmas enemies to lovers romance. I could not get enough of the chemistry and banter. This is a very unique Christmas story. I mean I have never read a book like this I do not know if there is actually another book out there like this. However if there is I will be reading that one too!
Katherine is the Grinch of Christmas and Tom is her ex-husband who is still her emergency contact. So when Katherine is diagnosed with a concussion and needs to be monitored for 48 hours to make sure it does not get worse. Tom could not get these 48 hours over with as soon as possible. He has a girlfriend to make his fiance. So when literally everything goes wrong in Katherine and Tom's travels. Could there be more to their love than they ever realized? Will all the wrong things lead to some very right things for Katherine and Tom?
Content: divorce, miscommunication, injury

If you love Hallmark movies, you’ll absolutely love Emergency Contact! It’s no secret I’m a huge Lauren Layne fan, and I was so excited she and her husband had a holiday romance coming out.
Let’s be honest. The plot- totally ridiculous. Katherine and Tom are ex-spouses who are forced to spend the Christmas together after Katherine gets a concussion, and Tom is still listed as her emergency contact. Hilarity ensues as they are forced to take planes, trains, and automobiles to get home to Tom’s family and to-be fiance (I told you- it is literally as Hallmark-esque as you can get). Over the course of their adventure, we learn how their relationship started and eventually, imploded. Their hostility for each other makes for 10/10 banter, and I found myself laughing throughout the entire book. Their extended journey also gives them plenty of time to face their past and forces them to address the lingering feelings that they clearly still have for one another. This book is a sloooooow burn, and the only thing I wanted at the end was more of Katherine and Tom’s story. But like most good Lauren Layne books, there is a fantastic epilogue that gave me a little bit of the closure I was looking for 😉
Emergency Contact is a romcom set at Christmas. Katherine is an ambitious NYC attorney, who is also known as The Grinch. She doesn't like Christmas due to something that happened in her past. When the cab she is in get in an accident, she is injured. She has a concussion and a back wound that needs attending. With her personal information a bit old, it is her ex-husband Tom, who gets the call. She needs to be monitored and can't be left alone. With no family and all her friends out of town for the holidays, Tom reluctantly agrees to take care of her, in fact, he takes her to Chicago where he is spending the holidays with his parents. His plan was to get engaged on Christmas Eve and his girlfriend is already at his parent's waiting for him. With a blizzard and other events, will they ever make it to Chicago? This is a bit of a Planes, Trains, Automobiles story. Katherine is a bit obnoxious and antagonistic, but you can see that she still loves Tom. It is made clear that he was the one that wanted the divorce. Tom is kind, works hard to be positive and do what he believes is right. These two were a hoot. Their arguments and banter had me laughing all the time and I knew that they had to get back together. They say that opposites attract and these two couldn't be more different. As we got to know them and their backgrounds, I felt for Katherine. This was my first book by Lauren Layne and I will be looking at her backlist.
This was not Layne's best book but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the whole ridiculous journey of everything going wrong.
I could not put this down!! It is one of my favorite Christmas books I've read! This should be made into a holiday romance movie. It was the most perfect holiday romance to read curled up with the Christmas lights on. This booking is definitely going on mybto keep shelf.
I just reviewed Emergency Contact by Lauren Layne & Anthony Ledonne. #EmergencyContact #NetGalley

So cute! A little far fetched but if you just go with it, it's a funny, quirky ride! I read this on a road trip and it was actually the perfect book! Very fun & adorable for christmas.
Cute book about former spouses who remain each other's "emergency contact". When the wife is in an accident just before Christmas and cannot be released unless she has someone who agrees to stay with her for 48 hours, her ex husband has to take to her his family Christmas, where he plans on proposing to his new girlfriend.
Cute for a Christmas romance.
Well that was a great read. ❤️ I love Lauren Layne’s writing. It aways leaves satisfied and happy after each and every one. However, I wasn’t so sure about this one after I got into the first few chapters….
I really didn’t care for Katherine, an high-powered attorney and the way she treated her ex-husband Tom. She was a real grinch and so self-centered. The constant arguing drove me crazy. I wanted so much more than that. But then as the book went on, you were slowly getting to know about each main character’s feelings and personalities. I finally started to warm up to Katherine, and really liked the direction of the book. The story was unique, and the writing was fabulous. Loved the Christmas theme right around the holidays too! Loved it.
While reading, I decided to purchase the audio version of this book, so when I couldn’t sit and read, I could listen. Great narration by Brianna Cohen and Tim Paige. I highly recommended this book or audio book to anyone who enjoys a good clean rom-com/romance novel. A very special thank you to Blackstone Publishing via NetGalley for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
Such a fun, quick holiday read about second chances. I loved this story. Tom and Katherine's marital issues are so realistically portrayed. Their emotions were described in such a stark way that I often felt rather emotional for all the pain that was dealt and received. What was made crystal clear is that the marriage was not easy but the love was still there and these two could work to make it work. The journey it took for them to get there by plane, train and automobiles was often amusing and definitely helped to lighten what could have been a heavy tale. This one is definitely a winner that I will be recommending often.
This was such a wonderful book. Katherine and Thomas divorced several years ago after their interests seem to go in different directions. When she's in an accident and he receives a call as her emergency contact, they are thrown back into one another's orbit.
Things. couldn't be more untimely for this reunion. Thomas is trying to get home to Chicago where he plans to propose to his new girlfriend but yet Katherine has a concussion and needs observation for forty-eight hours. Being the good guy that he is, he can't leave her alone. Especially when he realizes she really is just that....alone.
Katherine has worked to years to achieve partner status at the law firm where she's devoted her life. She can't help but wonder if all the dedication to her job is what led to the downfall of her marriage. As a matter of fact, she's pretty sure it was a major contributor. But Thomas wasn't innocent in the breakup either.
As the two of them try to make their way to Chicago, every thing that could go wrong does. It's as if fate has other plans for them. Along the way, they'll learn a lot about each other. Like maybe neither of them is truly over the other person. But is it too little too late?
This was truly a lovely and at times a little bit heartbreaking holiday story about life and how easy it is to make mistakes that can impact your life in ways you never imagined. It spoke to my heart. I loved that it was set during the holidays. For me it made a perfect backdrop.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
