Indeed, an unreserved applause for such a splendid work, a narrative meticulously crafted from start to end. To all the young ladies, this tale will bring back the thrilling yet rebellious spirit of your teens, all within a safe and positive environment. It's not just a story, but an empathetic reflection of adolescence, a light guiding through the maze of growing up, all the while celebrating youthful spirit and positivity.
Vampires! Roller derby! Queer characters! Need I say more?
This was an adorable middle grade graphic novel about Mina, a human girl who gets chosen to be the jammer in a Paranormal Roller Derby league. She’d lost her passion for ice skating, just going along with the plan to try to make the Olympics. But through roller derby, and all her new teammates, she finds a new passion for a different type of skating.
I thought this story was a lot of fun. It was elevated by the super cute art and the amazing colors. I’m such a sucker for a graphic novel that uses vibrant colors. There were seriously a couple of different pages that I’d like to have as art prints, they were that gorgeous.
At times I do think the story was overstuffed with multiple subplots. I think I would have liked the book even more if the plot was a bit more streamlined, and then it could be expanded more if it becomes a series. Some parts just ended up feeling a little rushed.
But overall I had a blast reading this. I’d definitely recommend checking it out!
THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN. I’m so mad I read it so early because now I have to wait for the sequel! I was worried for a second that it was going to wrap up too fast, but knowing there’s more to come is so exciting!
I love that this is about paranormal roller derby teams. That’s just so fun. It also makes the rules and teamwork of roller derby accessible to kids. It gives them the option to seek it out should they want to experience a less paranormal version!
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children's for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.
I get what the core message of the graphic novel was supposed to be--following your own dreams and no one else's--but it got really overshadowed by the million of other things happening in this book. I absolutely loved the colors in the book but it wasn't enough to save the strange storytelling.
The art in this graphic novel is stunning and engaging. The storytelling is relatable. Having to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and find a new side of you is something that I believe transcends all generations. Even though Blood City Rollers can be seen as just another graphic novel, the story really has heart.
2.5, can't quite round up to a 3. I just couldn't get into this one that much. There were a few too many things happening and characters that didn't get much attention. Min claims to be super dedicated to the team, but we only get to know a couple of the vampire characters.
This is a story about dreams and friendship. I love Mina's personality on how fast she adapt to the new environment. And the VAMPS? WITCHES? dang they're pretty cool 😎
In love with the colours!!!
This was a cute graphic novel that I could see a lot of kids picking up, especially fans of Roller Girl!
Skates on. Fangs out. Let’s roll. This perfectly paranormal graphic novel about a 13-year-old ice skater who embraces the dark side and finds her light when she joins a vampire roller derby team is to die for.
This was so much fun! Great writing and great art!
Cute and fun. A little light on the vampires, but nice focus on teamwork. It ends on a cliffhanger. I think some young readers will be eager for a sequel, and I might be curious enough about the developing romance to pick it up.
This is a fun middle grades graphic novel that somehow combines roller derby and vampires. It works like a charm, and is fun, funny, accepting of non-binary, LGBTQ+, human and vampire characters, all together. It teaches the reader about roller derby and some of the vampire lore (which the author has taken liberties with, though it makes for a fun read).
I recommend this for middle grades and up. It ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm curious to see what happens next as well as the developing romance between the characters.
Cute story, conclusion seemed a little rushed, didn't feel a draw to read a sequel. Does have a good message of teamwork and the illustrations are bright and vivid.
This paranormal graphic novel is a great read for middle school aged kids. It follows the story of Mina who is an ice skater working towards being an Olympic champion. However, there are a few things standing in her way. She soon finds herself in the mix with a roller derby team of a different kind who are in desperate need of a win. As if happens, this is a bonus for Mina as she learns to believe in herself and to accept help from others. Great read that I, an adult, thoroughly enjoyed, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the inclusivity and the beautiful illustrations. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for allowing me to review this ARC.
The second I heard there was a vampire roller derby book, I knew I had to read it! And it definitely was a quick and fun read. I do wish there was a bit more vampire and a bit more explanation of some of the story lines, but the illustrations and diversity were great!
Thanks to NetGalley for an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for my candid opinions. I love Roller Derby and middle grade graphic novels, and I thought the vampiric aspect of this book was an interesting subgenre, so I was eager to get into this book. I liked it overall, and I also feel like there were so many subplots and storylines that sometimes prevented me from finishing it more quickly than I anticipated. I appreciated the LGBTQ+ inclusion and frequently pronoun identification in this book, and believe that both being represented in a female centric graphic novel middle grade book is incredibly powerful. I think if there is some editing and reduction of the myriad of storylines, this could be an award winning series that middle grade girls read for years to come.
I was a big fan or Jamieson's Roller Girl, so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it. Roller Girl mixed with vampires - sign me up! I absolutely loved the art style, the diversity of characters and the descriptions of roller derby in this book. I felt like the vampire aspect of the book wasn't explored as much and somethings weren't quite explained. I think that maybe the book was a little too short to fully understand everything that was going on. However, I still had a fun time reading this and I think lots of others will enjoy it, too. Glad to have a new recommendation for graphic novel readers, vampire fans, and readers that enjoyed Roller Girl.
This graphic novel was a lot of fun to read! I loved the art style and how the story progressed! It was a great book that I know people will love!
3.5 rounded down. Vampire roller derby should be a no-brainer, but this one had too little vampires, and too much roller derby. It felt like I was reading an (albeit very fun) instruction manual on the game. I kept wishing for more story.
