Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
This is one of those books that you can appreciate on two levels. The primary text is narrated by the volcano itself. These are simple, declarative statements. "I am a volcano" "Something is stirring", that sort of thing. Each page also has commentary by a small bird. This bird provides more detailed, scientific explanations. Read the volcano's narration to very young children. It's an explanation of volcanoes that even small children can understand. The bird's text is the level of detail older kids are looking for when they look for a book about volcanoes. With cartoon style illustrations it's visually appealing too.
There is a lot of information in this book, but it is age appropriate and does not overwhelm kids of the age it is intended for. I think they will especially like the pretty illustrations. This book is so engaging for young readers.
This was a fun mix of stories and nonfiction info bits. It flows and works well together. Add the illustrations and kids will be laughing and learning at the same time. This is a well-done primer for kids on volcanoes with enough information to be interesting, but not so much it makes the book boring.
An exciting read for budding vulcanologists! Our bird guide explains details about volcano life stages, formation, types, etc. colorful and engaging read particularly good for young scientists age 8-13. More concentrated facts are embedded in separate pages near the end of the read to explain the science. The three quarters of the book are more approachable for younger readers as part of a read aloud. Creative variety in the illustration really sets this book apart from the rest. A worthwhile addition to any classroom or lower grades school library.
Me and my children enjoyed this story with all the characters within. It's about how a volcano that has came a wake and is about to erupt. There were step by step explained details of what was going on. A little bird was telling what had happened to the volcano.
This was a fun story to read. It had action throughout. It had a few giggles within. The illustrations were easy to follow the story and were colorful. My children like the little bird in the story. They like trying to find the bird at every page.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
This is a great introductory book about volcanoes that packs a lot of information but keeps it in story form. I would use this book while doing a unit study on volcanoes with a mid elementary kids to introduce the topics in a story style or to introduce volcanoes for younger readers. It's an interesting story with playful illustrations. I also like the anatomy of a volcano and additional facts included at the back of the book. I'll be using this one with my kids next time we study volcanoes!
This is such an inviting book for children who are interested in volcanoes and enjoy illustrated picture books. Informative information, with additional facts shared by a cartoon bird, fill the pages and help young readers understand the importance of volcanic eruptions, and helps make them less scary and more informative. A science expert was consulted on the book, and it would be a worthwhile addition to any school or public library collection.
In simplistic drawings, a volcano goes from dormant to erupting and back again. A red bird shares facts in comic blurbs.
This book would be enjoyable to kids who are already interested in volcanoes and have some background knowledge. However, the format is a bit disjointed. The volcano itself starts narrating, then the bird takes over, sometimes within the scenery and then suddenly in a classroom of animals.
A cute concept overall, but it could be confusing to young readers.
I think this would be a great addition to any early learning volcano lesson or a generally fun read for any little volcano lover. This book breaks down the cycle of a volcano in an easy to understand way. The pages are bright and eye catching.
I would highly consider donating this book to the 1st or 2nd grade science teacher, as I could see them using this book year after year.
Kaboom! Is a fun and educational book to teach kids about volcanoes. Told from the alternate perspectives of the volcano and a local bird, we learn about the long lifecycle of volcanoes, and how they can bring destruction. Over time, though, that destruction eventually brings new life to the area!
If your child likes volcanoes and earth science, of if they simply like things that go KABOOM, they will love this!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!
Loved this book. It has a cute story about the lifespan…well maybe not lifespan but lifecycle of a volcano.
It’s cool because it’s a story and it’s factual/educational with great illustrations to keep young minds engaged.
Would be perfect to read to kids in 1st, 2nd-3rd grade science class
Volcanoes are something that have caused numerous kids a lot of angst and anxiety but also fascination. This beautiful book will help satisfy their curiosity without making them overly nervous. The illustrations are so calm and happy and the information is thorough and not too scary. I loved the bird giving additional facts and there was so much good info in the backmatter! I would definitely use this as a fun read aloud or for homeschool.
This book about volcanoes would make an excellent mentor text for teaching informational writing. The use of vocabulary in a teachable way is a perfect thing for my students to emulate with a topic of their own.
I wish this one had been either only told by the perspective of the volcano or just by the bird. The mix just felt messy and it just seemed like they didn't work well together. I was a bit intruiged by the perspective of the volcano but it just lacked feeling and was inturrupted constantly by the bird that just dropped dry descriptions of the process. While it had a good deal of information, I wish it had used real life examples of volcanos erupting and their impact on those that live near them.
5 Stars
I thought this educational story regarding the process of Volcanoes was done really well. Its explained clearly with simple terms that I think most elementary kids will understand and grasp. The illustrations also are fantastic, the art style is beautiful and will capture young minds. I really like the small detail of adding a face to the volcano to make it feel more relatable to kids and show emotion of the different stages.
I would recommend this book to any educational setting, pre-school age to elementary.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
I will be posting my review to my Instagram page the.littlest.bookworm and retail sites close or on publication.
I loved the art for this book and the simplistic storytelling of the volcano waking up. It's packed with lots of information about volcanoes, but it didn't feel overwhelming. I think it could be a fun learning tool for kids who want to know more about natural disasters.
Review to come September 5th on blog/goodreads/amazon.
I received this book from the publisher/Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I just love books about volcanoes so when I spotted this adorable and fun looking book up on Netgalley I knew I had to click that Read Now button that was tempting me so!
In this one we get to meet a volcano who had been sleeping for ages... but is now slowly waking up! Things are rumbling. Things are heating up! And then BOOOM!! Throughout seeing the volcano wake up we get all sorts of fun information by a bird, at first just in his normal feathery outfit but eventually donning the appropriate costumes to deal with a soon to burst out volcano! He will tells us all about what is happening during what time, for instance when the volcano erupts he tells us what kind of things come out of the volcano and what happens when it is super strong (change the weather). It was really fun, though at times just a bit jarring because we went from a cute volcano waking up to an enthusiastic bird. I am not sure what else could have been done to have told us how a volcano works, after all the volcano is mostly sleeping or waking up and you cannot expect him to talk to us then, haha. I really loved seeing the whole cycle of a volcano including a very sweet and happy ending.
The last few pages are extra information on volcanoes, from how they look to common types, and more. I really enjoyed that that was added to the book.
The illustrations were one of my favourite parts of the book. They were so fun and the volcano was quite cute. The art really made me smile.
All in all, a fun way to show kids how volcanoes work! I would recommend it.
