A really cute story about friends Rover and Speck, and their mission to explore Planet K2-128b. This is a really adorable book for early readers that combines science and just goofy fun in a way that is appealing to most kids with great pictures to support the information. Best part for me was the three creatures they find and their names, which was a great reference to Shel Silverstein. I’m not sure if that’s what Roth meant to do, but that’s how I felt so I’m sticking with it.
This was my first Rover and Speck book and I loved it. I read it to some older preschoolers on a family trip and they loved it too. Determination, friendship, and comedy, it has it all.
Cute space story! I'm looking forward to introducing it to my daughter. She would love the companion and their activities.
Our intrepid explorers set down on a watery world where they're soon involved in a dangerous rescue mission. The reader gets to learn about space, sharks, and symbiotic relationships all the while being amused by this robotic duo's antics. A fun graphic for younger readers.
this graphic novel would be good for middle grade readers. I think reluctant readers especially would enjoy it. One of the characters really pushes his boundaries.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Delightful story that takes young readers on an entertaining journey filled with humour, friendship and imaginative storytelling.
I got this book for my son who loves these characters and former stories in the series. This one was once again a great read that once again focus on the friendship and adventures of the main characters.
Love the graphics and the story as it is engaging and easy to read an understand even by younger readers. Must read book in a kid's list.
I received an electronic ARC from Kids Can Press through NetGalley.
Adventure awaits these two robots who have been tasked with exploring planets. Readers will appreciate the humor and friendship they develop. Speck is more child like and afraid of several things. Rover assumes the adult role and offers knowledge and encouragement. Together, they find life forms to document, save one of these beings from a large ocean creature, solve problems for both the species, and make new friends. The artwork is fun to search for details and support for the text. Looking forward to more adventures as they continue to explore space.
Rover and Speck explore a watery planet in the second book of their adventures. This pair of characters make an excellent team as they learn about new ecosystems and apply their knowledge to solve problems. Rover is the brain of the pair while Speck is the heart and there are plenty of comic moments as their adventures progress. I haven't yet read book 1 but it is now on my list. I know so many elementary school readers who will adore this informative comic series.
River and Speck are kind of like Laurel and Hardy if you are of that age. You can’t help but love the duo.
Splash Down is the second book in the series of adventures of these alien creatures. I haven’t read This Planet Rocks but that wasn’t an issue in my enjoyment of their new adventure.
I enjoy the innocence is Speck and the patience of Rover as they navigate new and scary places, dark holes, a large scary creature with many teeth and stomach acid.
In this one the two are rescuing a new found friend called spikey spike. Seems he’s stuck in a blowhole in a huge creature, due to his spikieness. The periodic factoids offered in the story enhance the adventure. I didn’t know a blowhole was expelled at 300 mph. When the spikey spike is home safely he hugs the family which is not pleasant due to the spikes, but hey they are family, so it’s worth a bit of pain.
The artwork is is lively and colorful and quite appealing.
I predict there will be many adventures in the future for Rover and Spike and hey what a fun way to learn new facts.
Highly recommend!
My five- and seven-year-olds loved this book! The art was adorable and they can't wait to get a physical copy in October as they enjoy re-reading and sharing with friends. I enjoyed the problem solving and friendship between Rover and Speck.
Thank you for NetGalley for providing a free e-copy in exchange for an honest review :)
Jonathan Roth is an imaginative author and artist, and this continuing series is highly engaging for young readers, and enjoyable across ages. I also appreciate Roth’s background as a teacher who knows his audience well — he was kind enough to podcast with me about this series, and I highly recommend it for classrooms and school libraries.
Cute little friendship read. Read this to my 4 year old and had to skip over reading some of the parts about the sea monster. Loved the spikey spikes and cracked up about the Ted bit.
This is a solid follow up on the first Rover and Speck story, and I feel that Roth has settled in a bit more with this one in terms of the characters and the style, especially when it comes to introducing the little snippets of science and facts. The book flows better, and while there are still a few areas where Rover and Speck jump too quickly to a new concept or idea, they aren't as apparent as with the first volume.
The artwork is appealing and consistent with the first book, and I am pretty sure it would appeal to the age groups who are the intended audience.
Rover and Speck are going on an adventure to a world that is mainly water, and they experience a lot of the things that you would expect of two adventurers in an ocean world. Some big sea creatures, some island friends, and learning about themselves and the planet they are on along the way.
If you have read the previous book and enjoyed it, this will be a hit. If you are picking this up for the first time, you don't have to have read the first book but you'll have something else to read to your little one if they want more Rover and Speck.
My boys loved this book! Rover and Speck are hilarious! They really enjoyed the story and the science facts. I appreciated how much they learned while they were laughing at Rover and Specks shenanigans. We learned about symbiotic relationships, stomach acid, and ocean life. This is such a great series and we can't wait to read more.
This book is adorable! Speck is the cutest! I didn't want to put it down and read it straight through to the children, but it is a little long for my age group. That's okay though. I love the comic book look and feel that it fits the flow of the book best. I can't wait to read more Rover and Speck books!
While my program children wouldn't be able to use this book, I will definitely have one at home for my own children.
I love the storyline and the jokes that are thrown in. I laughed right along with the kids. This was a great book.
