I'm a huge fan of the Most Magnificent Thing and was excited to see the release of this take on a fun vocabulary based picture book. This shares some need-to-know words for little makers. This book is not geared toward teaching letters, but teaching specific vocabulary and language - too cute! I love when books take their readers seriously, even if they are just small humans. They're still capable of some advanced learning! Truly magnificent.
The main character from Spires' series are back in this alphabetical romp through all the A-Z things a maker needs. Each entry reminds the reader that creating can be messy and there will be failure. Failure is another step in the process of being a maker and needs to be embraced. This is a great growth mindset reminder.
Well, I took to this a lot better than I did my previous sight of this series (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...). Here we most successfully go through the full alphabet, with an image and a quick bite of text to tell us how to get to be an inventor. But it's not all sweetness and light and success – we get reminders to break off from our labours, walk away, unmake, try and try and try – this series does seem a fine way to get across that we do have to know our limits and those of our imagination. Throughout, the girl and her dog are forever trying to make a something, that is a kind of Heath Robinson-lite project, but I found that incidental to things, with the text so evidently and necessarily concise and clear. Last time of course I had a plot and what I saw as a lack of entertainment, here we have neither – and yet this time round we seem closer to seeing the creator's intentions, so four stars, in a way that really does suggest the benefits of never giving up without checking what a revamp can do.
The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z, written and illustrated by Ashley Spires, is the latest addition to The Most Magnificent series highlights all the words little makers need to know.
In this twist on a vocabulary book, the beloved characters from The Most Magnificent Thing walk with readers from A to Z, defining all the words they need to know about making. It perfectly captures the ups (“I is for IDEA. A gift from the imagination that wants to be made”) and the downs (“P is for PATIENCE. Most things don't work the first time … or the third time … or even the twelfth time”) all makers face and includes kid-perfect explanations of key concepts (“B is for BRAINSTORM. When ideas of all shapes and sizes rain onto the page”). It's a fun and clever alphabet journey, sure to inspire magnificent making of every kind!
The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z is a lovey and engaging picturebook that encourages readers to be creative and persistent in their efforts to make things. I thought the chosen words were clever and on point for the purpose. As always, I thought Spires's art was a perfect match to the text and keeps the reader focus on the book, and their next project. I love the encouraging tone and spirit of this series of books, and I think this alphabet book would be a delightful addition to personal, school, and public library collections.
As with the rest of the books in the series it was completely wonderful. This is an A-to-Z book, however, it’s not short and it’s not simple. It reminds the reader and the parents that it’s OK to make mistakes. That sometimes you need to walk away. And that there are zillions of things you can imagine. Just put it to use and try. This book is just as wonderful as the rest of the books and series that will stay on library shelves for years to come.
Super cute read. I’ll definitely recommend this book to my students who are on the lower end of reading levels. I felt like I would like it since I enjoyed the first book so much.
Whats not to love about Spires? And there's a lot to love about her Most Magnificent character. A must have to complete your collection!
This is just another wonderful book in this series. Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy.
This book takes you through the ABC’s and ups and downs of creating And persevering. Kids need this today. To know that it is ok to walk away, try again and start over.
I loved it!
🔠 I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again… @AshleySpires is one of my most favorite children’s book authors. Many of her books are STEM-related (which I LOVE) and her illustrations are some of the most creative and unique I’ve ever seen. I will always recommend her books.
🔠 Today’s book is an alphabet book; however, this is no “A is for Apple” version. This is a STEM-, Imagination-, and Creativity-focused A to Z version!! In this book, A is for Assistant, B is for Brainstorm, C is for Creativity, and so on. My favorites were E is for Experiment, L is for Learn, P is for Patience, and R is for Rethink.
🔠 Each page also explains a bit about the word used to represent the letter. For example, on the “R is for Rethink” page the message is that you can’t always force something to work and that sometimes it is better to rethink the situation and try something new.
🔠 This isn’t just an A to Z alphabet book. It is a lesson about the scientific method (which is, in a nutshell, to observe, ask questions, study, try, collect data, draw conclusions, and rework). The scientific method is, of course, used in scientific studies, but many elements of the method may be applied to life as well. It is a good lesson for children, and I applaud the author for all of her books that encourage children to learn, create, and even fail… and to always try again.
Thank you @NetGalley and @kidscanpress for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
"K is for KEEP GOING. Making things is an adventure full of ups and downs. Don't give up!"
Take an inspiring trip through the alphabet, and get motivated to tackle your next project - whatever it may be. Join a little girl and her dog as she Learns that Mistakes happen, and ingenuity requires Patience. Sometimes you just have to Try, try, TRY again.
A wonderfully encouraging book for makers of all sorts of magnificent things.
"The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z" by Ashley Spires is a delightful and educational children's book that takes young readers on an imaginative journey through the alphabet while celebrating the joys of creativity and innovation. Each letter of the alphabet is associated with a different invention or creation, inspiring children to explore their own inventive potential. With charming illustrations and clever wordplay, Spires encourages young minds to think outside the box and embrace the exciting world of making and inventing. This book not only entertains but also fosters a sense of wonder and curiosity in young readers, making it a perfect addition to any child's library.
I loved this book. I felt like it used very creative ways of using each letter of the alphabet. It was not the standard words that you see in most alphabet books. I loved it!
Did you ever have a great idea and just couldn’t make it work? Sometimes the journey is in the process and not a quick solution. Young inventors, readers, and explorers will think about their own step by step process. From A to Z is colourful, graphically appealing, and lends itself to a book talk. Invite young inventors aboard to discover a way of dealing with discovery.
I did enjoy this book. I thought the pictures were well done and the phrase that went with the letter was appropriate. I also really liked how they made the letter out of supplies.
I did think that they said the same thing many times. Yet and try again and rethink. Same thing friend, same thing.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
I teach kindergarten and this book is perfection! The illustrations are detailed and colorful without being overwhelming. Each letter will be sure to spark a conversation about the STEAM process. I cannot wait to purchase a physical copy for my classroom and home libraries.
The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z by Ashley Spires - 5/5
Children's Fiction
The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z is such a fun picture book, giving you a chance to use your imagination to see each letter. The illustrations are fun and out of the box, the writing is brilliant. The Author gives the children vocabulary that will help them navigate the creative process which is always a plus.
Thank you, NetGalley and Kid's Can Press for the eARC.
Loved Ashley Spires new Maker book. The A to Z words are perfect for our school wide maker project. I will be buying the book for our school library and my classroom library.
I had read "The Most Magnificent Thing" and really enjoyed it. This book was also a joy. With delightful illustrations, Spires goes through the alphabet with different words related to inventing. Like in the first book, Spires includes ideas around the fact that failure is not bad, it's just a way to cross off a path that didn't work and I love that.
Four stars

Opinions are my own
This book is just brilliant. I read the e-book as an advance reader copy and here is my honest review.
I love a good alphabet book and this is as good as any other I've read and may be my favorite alphabet book yet. The Most Magnificent Maker's A to Z is such a fun way to encourage children to be creators. Throughout the alphabet, it addresses all aspects of a makers journey. From planning and gathering materials to handling frustration and then perservering with your dreams. I cannot wait to add a hard copy of this book to my family's library. I also plan to recommend my preschool get a copy as well. It will make a great addition to any library. A friend of mine recently recommended another book by Ashley Spires, The Most Magnificent Thing, and now that I know how good Maker's A to Z is I am excited to get more books by Spires.
Make Your Way from A-Z is an adorable alphabet picture book that focuses on STEM and growth mindset. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed. Her assistant is once again helpful and with her along her journey through the alphabet. The message is simple but beautiful: Be creative and try new things. When things don't go the way you hoped, step-back, think, and try again. This is a must have for the teacher's read aloud toolbox.
