3.5. There were parts of this that I quite enjoyed! Firstly, I love a good novella in between heavy books. I also quite liked the setting. There's something promising here.
Brothers of Blood is the first book in the New Orleans Haunts Series.
This was a quick, exciting novella that I could not put down. Being from the New Orleans area, I sometimes get a little hesitant because of very familiar settings and all, but THIS WAS SOOO GOOD!! I was hooked from the very beginning. It was wonderfully written and definitely excited for more.
This is my first book by J.T. Patten and most certainly won't be my last!!
John and Wayne are twins, and if you know anything about twins in the horror universe, you know great things only happen to these pairs <rolls eyes>. Picture this, the setting is New Orleans, early on in the 20th century – the sights are well-to-do people mixed with the scourge of the earth. Jazz music filters the streets of the French Quarter, crawfish and po’ boys cook up in the restaurants. The Louisiana accent prominent and varying depending on who you are in society. John and Wayne are down on their luck – until they’re given a way out.
I wanted to read this because it’s set in New Orleans and has vampires. I love the setting and I love vampires. New Orleans is a place filled with magic, history and folklore, and it’s not to be taken for granted. As someone who has always wanted to travel there, I could FEEL the sights and sounds from J.T.’s writing. I could smell the dingy streets caked with sewage and rot. I could smell the upscale areas with money – the fresh flowers, perfumes, life.
John and Wayne live an almost cursed life until they’re suddenly found by vampire Jacques. But is he as almighty as he’s treated? Can John and Wayne make it out “alive”?
J.T. Patten’s writing is quite great; however, I was wanting more from this story. It just wasn’t enough for me to be blown away by the storyline, and I often had moments where I just wasn’t interested in what the characters were doing. While at the same time, there were times I was really into the storyline.
Overall, I liked it, and I’m interested enough to continue on with the writer’s New Orleans Haunts series. I recommend this to anyone who wants a shorter read with vampires in a creepy-ish setting.
Wow! Reading Brothers of Blood had me hooked from the start. This book was a fast paced with new and exciting information at each turn. As I was reading, I was trying to see if I could figure out what was going on and if I could predict the ending. Well, I could not. Reading Brothers of Blood will be having you convinced of one thing and then a total redirect.
You have two brothers who have had a rough life growing up followed by a few months that put them at their lowest. This lands them in the hands of Mr. Jacques, the man who promises he can give them everything they desire. The only question is will it come with a price or not?
This book gave me interview with the vampire vibes, without the interview part of course. Two brothers who are ride or die for each other no matter, doing what it takes to survive. If you are into New Orleans secrets, vampires, and or "blood suckers" I would highly recommend this book. The ending was perfect, and if there is a sequel count me in!
Brothers of Blood by J T Patten is listed as a Novella and I hope there is more to come. The description had me at New Orleans and vampires. Anyone who loves vampire novels like myself will make comparisons to the Queen herself. Patten isn’t there yet but I truly have nothing negative to say. There is potential to expand this universe and have it grow. I also really enjoyed the included lore and true history Patten included.
Brothers of Blood is a dark, suspenseful novella that had me hooked from the very first sentence. This book wastes no time thrusting the characters into a bloody dilemma and maintains a fast pace throughout. Understandably being a novella there wasn’t time for as much character development as I would prefer, but I imagine that will come later in the series. I’m always excited when a book is set in the French Quarter, it’s one of my favorite places to be, and J. T. Patten’s beautiful prose captured the ambience of the neighborhood effortlessly.
I really enjoyed this little novella, it had so much packed into a short amount of time and the ending left me wanting more. This is an amazing start to a new vampire horror series. If you enjoy vampires, gore and horror and are looking for an easy book to get lost in, I highly recommend checking this one out! I look forward to reading more of J. T. Patten’s works in the future. 4.5 ⭐️ Gripping! Fast paced!
I was a fan. This novella was so fast paced! It jumps right undo the action, and I have an appreciation for a book that skips the slow paced intro. I couldn’t put it down!
I had little expectation going into it, the cover and title gripped my attention, so with the jump to suspense and story telling was exciting. I will be looking forward to the future books that comes with this series. I wont say it was predictable, but I was able to predict what I felt what was coming. The ending was great. I loved the authors writing, the descriptors in this novella were excellent I felt I could smell, see, feel what he was trying to convey. Well done. I was very entertained!
This book was not really for me, As I expected it to be a paranormal (ie ghosts) horror. The way that this book was described in the blurb was not clear and gave the wrong impression. It is similar to the vampire diaries (minus the cringiness and love interests) In the fact that vampires were compelling humans. Personally, this type of book is not something I am at all interested in, however I deeply appreciate that many will be very interested in this book :)
This was a great novella. But I was left wanting more. I enjoyed the twists and turns. But something was missing for me.
Best Selling Dark Fiction author, J.T. Patten kicks off a new horror series dedicated to New Orleans legends and folklore with a terrifying novella about the monsters within us all.
This was really interesting. Not exactly my thing, but I can see its merit.
Okay... so Hallowe'en cometh early for this horror-loving gal!
Picked up this wickedly declicious little ARC from J.T. Patten- the first of many dark inspired books I am planning to read leading up to the season of gore.
This book is a great start to the "New Orleans Haunts Series." It starts off running which is a must for a novella, and especially a suspenseful, horror storyline. No slow pacing here. I was mouthing the words, "whaaaaa?" after reading the first page. I like books that bring me right into the action and suspense immediately and this book delivered. I kept in mind the fact that this is the first book of the series so I did not expect a huge, convoluted storyline to unfold immediately as it continues in the next book. My expectations for the the first in a series was not over-the-top, and so I found the read satisfying.
I also deeply appreciate the natural passion the author pours into his writing. You can sense he is all in the way he lets his imagination wander and take the reins in creating scenes and details so lovingly, it is a tangible thing to behold. I caught onto this immediately. It catapulted my grading from a 4 to a 5. The effort is transparent and deserves to be acknowledged.
I believe very fine work will be produced from this author moving forward so I definitely recommend an interested reader give this debut series a chance. (Oh... and terrific cover! It appealed to me immediately.)
5/5
I’m very interested in the start of a novella series by J.T. Patten. Brothers of Blood was short and gory and full of interesting characters. I really enjoyed the plot and the ending threw me for a loop. However, I wasn’t exactly attached to any of the characters and found that I didn’t care for John and Wayne Carter by the end of the book. This really may have just been because it was a novella and not a lot of room/time for a ton of character development. I also wish I had gotten more of Kesha’s character because I actually really did like her, even in the end. Overall, an intriguing start to the New Orleans Haunt novella series.
