I can't stop screaming about this book!!!! This was my favorite witchy read of the summer and it finally got teen witches RIGHT. if you are a fan of the chilling adventures of sabrina or this poison heart by kalynn bayron this is the book for you!
I really enjoyed the witchy vibes of this book. The main story definitely grips you, however the back stories of the 6 main characters were randomly through the story making it jarring at times. I did enjoy the different plot points and didn't see the twist coming. Definitely can't wait to read book 2 and more adventures from the Red three and their friends.
Thanks to Netgalley and Scholastic for the copy.
This was a fun read since I love stories of witches and spooky things. There were a couple of times I was having trouble following what was going on, and some of the relationships were a bit rushed, but overall an entertaining read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me a copy of this book in return for my honest opinions.
Witches, yes what to not to live
Anyone who loves YA paranormal fiction, especially witches will enjoy this book
I do not hesitate to recommend.
You will enjoy, I promise!
I received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley.
The premise of this book—teen witches at a witchy academy, fighting against dark forces—sounded pretty great, and the cover was primo. I really wanted to love this book, but it was just an absolute slog. It took me 10 days to read, and I nearly DNFd it multiple times.
As many other reviews have mentioned, the six different points of view were just to much, and that's without mentioning that two of the main characters having names that look so similar that I could not keep them straight. I wish that I would have liked any of the main characters more, but I found them all pretty flat. I just couldn’t make myself care about them at all.
Overall, this story could have benefited from some severe pruning. There was just too much going on. Between that and the inconsistent pacing, when I'd put the book down and come back to it, I always felt like I'd some now skipped ahead or missed parts. The end of the book felt slapdash, and there were multiple dangling plot threads left.
(The editing for content a grammar was pretty terrible, but didn't impact my rating.)
Personal point of contention: Using common words but not the common definition (ie. using the archaic definition of 'reneged') makes it feel inorganic—like too much thesaurus action
THE HAUNTING SEASON IS HERE AND THE WOLVES ARE AWAKE.
This was a very fun read. I loved the characters and their relationship to each other. The world-building and lore were great as well.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a similar feel as The School For Good And Evil. Maybe they'll make this one into a movie too?
I thought this was going to be a 5 star read. Anything with witches and a magical school usually is for me. However, this was hard to get into. There are a lot of characters, A LOT! Between the schools, the students of both, teachers, townspeople, families of each FMC... you get the idea. Once I felt I had a hold of the world and who was who I felt more comfortable. It did take a while for the story to gain traction with all of that info. Once it did, I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the second book to see what new adventures are ahead.
4 / 5 ⭐️
Thank you to Netgalley and Scholastic for giving me the chance to read this book!
This book was a love letter to all things witchy. The main characters, Iris, Thalia, Jailah, Logan, Trent, and Mathew, all played crucial roles in their fight to save their town of Haelsford, Florida from the dreaded Haunting Season and the deadly monsters known as Wolves that come with it.
I thoroughly enjoyed many aspects of this book. The way the reader is immediately thrown into the world, the multiple pov format, and the cast of diverse characters that all had their own compelling and well-formed back stories.
Oftentimes, multiple pov books have some pov’s that work better than others but, The Witchery kept me invested in each character’s narrative.
There were some aspects of the story that held it back from receiving a full five stars, the main one being that I was able to predict the twists at the end rather early on, although they were well executed and kept me engaged despite having figured out what was going to happen ahead of time.
Overall, I felt as though each character went through a meaningful arc, even if every aspect of their story wasn’t entirely wrapped up, the reader is able to finish the book with a satisfying impression of how each character’s future will develop.
Love this so much! This is a great story of undoing long standing curses and witchcraft. Its a beautiful story of the trauma land and people hold.
For the most part, I enjoyed this. I thought the setting was cool, the magic was interesting, and I liked most of the characters. The problem is for the length of the book there were far too many POVs. You have the four main witches and two boys from the neighboring mundane school. 6 POVs is what you would expect from a sprawling fantasy over 700 pages, not a book under 400. And because there were so many POVs, the character-building suffered a little. Mostly because there were chapters where the information about a character was dumped there. Not to say that it wasn't interesting, but I feel if either the POVs had been cut down to just the main four or two of the main four OR the book were much longer, then there would have been more space to build each of the characters and the world. While I didn't mind Mathew or Trent, they truly didn't need POVs, tbh. I much preferred when we were in the heads of the other witches instead.
In conjuction with the POV problem, there was an issue of pacing. Because there were so many POVs, like I said earlier, there was a problem where character backstories were dumped into one characters chapter, when they would have been better served peppered throughout the story in bits and pieces. On top of that, the constant POV changes meant the plot moved at a lightning pace, even when there were moments it would have been better to slow down and give the reader time to process.
While I do think these issues impacted the majority of my enjoyment, I will say that I appreciated the way queerness was just so casual and accepted. That, and there were a few moments that were genuinely creepy. When the writing got a chance to slow a bit and focus on these moments is where I think the story really, really shined.
i won't lie to you, throughout this book I was quite confused. I didn't understand what was happening/what had just happened at times and I felt the relationships were a bit rushed. (both platonic and romantic). but that's just my opinion if you like witches and all that stuff you should give this a try!
