Somehow I always forget that Oseman's books aren't fluff filled light-hearted reads. I think, maybe because of the way that I romanticize Nick and Charlie in my head- love these two with my whole heart.
Oseman tackles a lot in her books; trauma, family eating and mental disorders, bigotry. Big heavy real things, and while sometimes these issues are hard to read about in general Oseman's books are not hard to read. There's so much love and growth in this one (and her others.) I love that we get perspectives from Tori, Charlie and Oliver! Oliver's may have been my very favorite- his chapter is written in such an innocent and raw way. I just loved the conversation he has with his mother at the end of this book.
This was a very quick Christmastime Novella following some of my favorite Heartstopper characters this new edition is sprinkled with drawings and they are adorable! If you like the Heartstopper comics I highly recommend you give this one a read.
I love this novella which takes place after Charlie Spring has been hospitalized for anorexia. It is a very sensitive take on the challenge of both having a mental illness and being the loved ones who try to support that person. The illustrations and new cover by Alice Oseman are delightful, as always. I especially loved Oliver in this one. There is nothing quite so heartwarming as the love of a child even in the midst of a difficult and drama-filled time.
I highly recommend this to readers who love the Heartstopper series!
If you love Heartstopper, you'll enjoy this novella. Alice Oseman really knows how to depict mental health, especially in teens, and getting the perspective of all three siblings on the holidays helped to flesh out the family just a little bit more.
This Winter by Alice Oseman is a heartful story, just as all of the heartbreaker series is. She can do no wrong. I feel like we could continue the Charlie forever with no complaints. I really liked how this story centers around mental health and how the holidays are not always a happy time for everyone. It is crammed down our throats how we are supposed to feel during the holidays but this story conveys that it is okay to not be okay sometimes. Loved it!
I truly adore the way Alice Oseman presents teenage mental health in an accurate way. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues my entire life (anxiety and depression primarily through high school), seeing Charlie struggle but have people in his corner to support him is amazing. I hope teens going through similar issues read this and feel less alone!
This was a great novella that tied into the characters, storyline and holiday perfectly. I really liked that we get to see the perspectives and points of view from the three Spring siblings. It was interesting to see each of their takes on what was happening during the holiday. Tori is my favorite character so it was awesome to have more of her in this book as well as Charlie and Nick. The drawings in this book are fantastic! The picture of Nick and his puppy is so adorable! I want to frame it. This book continues on with Charlie's eating disorder and mental illness. The writing goes about it very well and there is so much personality in all of the characters. I hope more novella's pop up as it gets more in depth with the characters and story. I absolutely enjoyed reading this!
Thank you so much to Scholastic for granting my wish to read this!
This Winter is a short and sweet story from one of the best novelists of our generation. I love that she doesn't shy away from men's mental health issues. Men have eating disorders and self harm and it is very rarely discussed in common topic and in media.
I also loved that we got an Oliver Spring perspective in this novella.
*I received a copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this opportunity.*
The edition I will be reviewing is the 2023 illustrated re-release of THIS WINTER.
Tender and heartwarming, THIS WINTER captures an imperfect family in a hard season. Oseman continues to impress me with her writing and artwork, but the root of her work-- the love-- will always separate her work as something incredibly special. THIS WINTER was no different, and is the perfect companion to both her incredibly popular Heartstopper series, and her first novel, Solitaire.
Thank you to NetGalley and Scholastic for the E-arc!
I know I'm not the only Heartstopper fan who is still recovering from season two's finale. Due to that, I have been reading Alice Oseman's other novels set in the Heartstopper universe. I am reading these books out of order which makes this novel the first I read instead of "Solitaire". This Winter is a novella following the Spring siblings during the holiday season. We get three POVs for each sibling which I felt was really nice since we got to see their inner monologue in certain scenes. This does take place after important plot points so I would recommend reading this after reading the graphic novels. However, It was still nice to focus on the Spring family and see their dynamic. Definitely check this out if you are in the same boat as me and need more Heartstopper content.
this was cute but ultimately very short - took me about 15 minutes to read. And it was nice to be back with Nick and Charlie but I'm not sure this added anything to their story. Usually I really like heartstopper-related stories but this one didn't do it for me.
Thank you for granting my wish for an ARC of This Winter! I really enjoyed this, I read it in less than an hour! It was nice to see a story set at Christmas that acknowledges that sometimes the holidays are a difficult time. And of course it's nice to see that Charlie has Nick and Tori to support him and that he is learning to advocate for himself. It was short but sweet, and definitely an enjoyable read!
I will eat up everything Alice Oseman writes as quickly as I can. This Winter is no exception.
It's Christmas for the Spring siblings Tori, Charlie, and Oliver, and their family is coming over for dinner. With Charlie recently returning home from a psychiatric ward, there is tension among the family as they navigate their relationships with each other as everyone grows older and changes.
In all of the Osemanverse stories, Alice does a wonderful job of capturing the joys and difficulties of being a teenager experiencing firsts, maintaining friendships, and dealing with parents who might not agree with every choice you make. The stories are sweet but deal with serious topics in a respectful manner.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this work in exchange for this honest review.
I love heartstopper and have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this rerelease. It’s so good and I absolutely adore the illustrations.
Thank you so much, Scholastic and NetGalley, for this ARC! I love winter, I love Heartstopper, obviously I am going to love this. This Winter takes place the winter (shocker!) before Solitaire and is told from the point-of-view of the Spring siblings. Alice Oseman always handles difficult topics so well and this novella was such a good mix of hurt and comfort. I also loved the illustrations throughout the story. This is perfect for any Heartstopper fan and will make you love Tori even more. (If that's possible.)
