Written in easy to understand basic scientific language, Krystal Monique Toney’s, “My Awesome Field Guide to Bugs—Find and Identify Your Crawling and Flying Bugs,” is designed especially for middle schoolers, as a helpful resource for them to use while exploring the creatures, great and small, living in their backyards and neighborhood.
Creepy, crawling, buzzing, biting, flying, and stinging—one thing about insects is that they’re almost everywhere on earth, even in the places where we wish that they weren’t, like around our picnics and outdoor gatherings.
Unlike most adults who would rather not share homes with members of the insect kingdom, young children are almost always enthralled by nature’s tiniest creatures. Remember the joy of chasing fireflies and butterflies as a child?
This Field Guide will make even the youngest naturalist ‘wanna be’ feel like a true scientist, and it’s the perfect supplement for youngsters working on school projects about insects.
From understanding insects to the fullest, “Field Guide” defines what makes Arthropods (insects) unique; discusses their three-segmented bodies—head, thorax, and abdomen; and describes each variety by its physical appearance, habitat, eating behavior, and special characteristics.

I loved this book. I thought it was really well written for ages 6-12. I would even use it as a good intro for high school, or college for folks who want to learn at a gentler pace for various reasons. I thought the pictures were great, the descriptions were well written, and most of the “common” insects, etc were covered.
I only have one critique, and it would be that I would like to see a range map for each creature, because it gives kids a better visual understanding of what it means rather than just text. But overall, I thought this was an amazing work and would give it 5 stars.
I liked the book set up, it was easy to search and liked there was space for notes. Clear pictures to identify adult bugs and tips for finding them.
It falls in a strange space where the wording is advanced but it feels like there should be more photos or facts of different stages to be the same level as the wording. Or the opposite, bring the reading level down and increase the font.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Loved this book! So educational and would be perfect for classrooms. I homeschool our kids and will be doing a butterfly kit this year and this book will come in handy to teach them all about butterflies!
