Thank you #netgalley and #mcmillian audio for allowing me as ARC for review
I really enjoyed the story and the narrator was perfect for this story. This is a western horror story that has many different views from chasing a witch to ending up in a town that deals in cannibalism.
The narrator was able to portray all the characters that were believable. He also had wonderful narrative skills. I also liked how the author used his prose to paint pictures of the scenes in the story. I could completely visualize what was happening.
At times I felt it was hard to keep the characters straight, especially in the audio version and I would love to read the story. Some things that I felt were off putting: the use of “he said, she said”. Sometimes the entire dialogue consisted of “who said” what. Also as much as the story was interesting, I did feel myself drifting off and thus missed part of the story.
Overall I give this a 4/5 for the audio. Only because I didn’t like the consistent use of “said”. I think I would give a 5/5 for the book as I can gloss over some parts.
I hoped I would love this piece of witchy western folk horror but I didn't get as engrossed as I hoped to be. I struggled to attach to the characters or immerse myself within the story.
However I don't feel like I'm entirely the target audience. While I love horror, Midwestern folk horror just doesn't speak to me in a way that it might for others. If the premise sounds up your alley, you may want to check this out.
Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to listen to this for an honest review!
The story and the Narration was good, the western appeal held up until it didn’t and the horror that was filtered in felt that way to me and that was a disconnect for me!
I had a hard time engaging with the characters . Note I did listen to this and I think the delivery was lost in the translation!
A poetic story of a lost child and the love of a friend. The villains feel real, like monsters we've faced ourselves. The message I left with is "no one is coming to save you, so get to work."
3.5 stars. A dangerous witch has a hefty bounty placed upon her head, and one old witch hunter is determined to collect it. Along the way, his posse grows to include a mute child he calls Rabbit, a widow named Rose, two cowboys looking for purpose, an outlaw, and a handful of paranormal entities. What a crew, right? Pursued by a monster with wicked intentions, the group races across the frontier, each one hoping for a different outcome upon reaching their destination.
This was a such a unique read — I loved the combination of western, horror, and fantasy! The pace was a little slow in the beginning, but it did pick up quickly and maintain steam through to the end. The cast of characters is large and I can't say that I really felt connected to any of them, but there were a few times my heartstrings were tugged. It's gory, but not TOO gory, and an overall enjoyable spooky season ride. I definitely recommend it for something different in the horror genre!
Thank you to Alex Grecian, Tor Nightfire, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for my advance audio and digital copies.
AH! I am so thankful to Macmillan Audio, Tor Nightfire, Alex Grecian, and Netgalley for granting me access to this wonderfully horrific horror story about mythical characters who are all out to get each other in this ancient setting. Red Rabbit is set to publish on September 19, 2023.
I requested this Audiobook because I thought the concept of a witch hunter old western novel sounded fascinating, but the story did not meet those expectations. The writing style is exposition-heavy and light on dialogue, which leaves the characters feeling flat. The story had a strong horror and gore element, but I found it hard to care what the characters were going through because of this lack of character development. Furthermore, the storyline jumped between characters in a way that I found very difficult to follow. This may have been easier while reading, but it was often confusing while listening.
Additionally, I understand that racism and sexism are time-period-compliant elements in a Western, but I do not think it was handled well in this novel.
A big thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to listen to this e-audio ARC.
I am always careful of Out West type books. This one though kept coming back to me and I finally couldn’t stand to not request the audiobook. I’m so glad I did. This book was all manner of characters and the creatures/beings in this one were just right. I was at times so sure how something would play out and would be wrong because as we go along with our narrators we learn that some of the previous facts were just not that at all. It all was rather complicated and their is a lot of death (some of which hit me a little emotional, no tears but definitely felt something) I this the plot was a fun one and the ending seemed about the best way to end it. I want to read more stories like this in the future.
