We love these fun, rhyming, animal books. Great pictures with fun words to keep the whole family entertained.
Part of a series – so far, of four – that very, very briskly show us Kangaroo and her world. Twiddling her paws one day she flings a boomerang, hoping for it to return, and when it doesn't she sings a little Charlie Drake ditty to herself. Oh, no, she doesn't – but she does crash into a tree holding a young koala, and lo another friendship is formed. The story is still told in rhyme, but the couplets can't be said to be the leading format here, as with the Platypus entry to this series, for there are just too many words involved. Some pages it looks like it just rhymes as and when it can. But on the up side you have the world's best picture of a young koala hitching a ride in a kangaroo pouch and trying not to throw up. A very early reader, with a couple of comprehension questions to reinforce the fact these books are aimed at helping with friendship-building among a very young audience, there is still a solid four stars here.
I read Ta-Da Koala with my niece and she loved it. The story is fun and perfect for beginner reader levels. Children learning to read will love the rhyming verses. This book also teaches about friendship, which is always good!
Thank you North Star Editions, Jolly Fish Press, and Net Galley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I requested this book from NetGalley because it has a koala and I love koalas. This is cute and it is in rhyming text. A kangaroo is looking for someone to play with and finds a cute koala. The koala just wants to eat and nap. I mean, what else do they do? Can the kangaroo get the koala to play? The illustrations were fun too. I enjoyed it!
This is a very cute story about Kangaroo, who is feeling bored. She tries to entertain herself by throwing a boomerang, but it fails to return to her.
When she accidentally bumps into a tree looking for her boomerang, she also bumps into Koala. But because he sleeps in the daytime, he isn't so keen to play. Until it turns out that Kangaroo's boomerang actually landed in Koala's tree!
And when Kangaroo sees his tight-grippy toes, she realises he will be a natural with the boomerang, so they become friends as they play together, with one teaching the other how to use the boomerang.
This is a simple story, and quite a nice one, because of the animal characters and rhyming text. But the best thing for me was the very expressive set of illustrations.
The artist has done a wonderful job of capturing the emotions on the animals' faces. And there are some nice questions afterwards to share with young readers, and thereby hopefully unleash their own creativity and playfulness. Recommended reading for and with young children.
It was a fun read that my four year old liked. It mentions a few differences between koalas and kangaroos and shows that they can be friends even with those differences and that it’s nice to have friends. It also includes questions/talking points to start conversations with your kids to help them dig deeper into the meaning and explore the words read through questions.
