This does exactly what it says on the tin - teaches you the basics for creating beautiful letters. It teaches you all the basic styles, and then there’s lots of room to bike on these, and be as creative as you like. The instructions and illustrations are clear, simple, and easy to follow - perfect for a total beginner for me. Each one has a step by step to follow, adding more detail each time. There are superb practise pages throughout the book for giving things a go with a little guidance.
This is a lovely book to help you get started on the wonderful world of calligraphy - my favourite is the gingerbread icing lettering! Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review
This caught my eye because it seemed like a neat addition to my books on lettering. It is pretty friendly for beginners -- it won't substitute some of the more foundational stuff, but if you already dabbled, this book walks you through embellishments pretty thoroughly. But I feel like even more experienced letterers can bookmark an idea or two. I can imagine this book being a good gift for fans of the craft!
My thanks for an arc of #SpecialEffectsLetteringandCalligraphy from #NetGalley.
I couldn't resist grabbing the copy of this book to add fuel to my lettering hobby. It's quite basic still -- so very accessible for those without much background -- but even an intermediate letterer can pick up one or two ideas to be inspired by. I definitely picked up a few ideas, especially leaning into existing mixed media tools I have. And I will definitely keep a few of the pages as references for fonts.
Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC of this book.
A very useful guide for anyone who wants to improve their handlettering. It has a lot of useful information on tools and such. The instructions are clear and their are many examples.
This book was filled with great information to help teach different techniques of writing. The type of pen, the thickness of the ink and lastly the paper. This teaches you so many different types of writing and how to combine the different techniqes to make them a unique one.
I love books like this and I am normally pretty creative but letting is my nemesis so I got this to practice and see if I can eventually master it. I love the practice letters at the beginning. I might feel a bit like I have gone back to school for my cursive writing but this is exactly what I need to practice practice practice. There are some great little tips and hints of how to do the key effects for lettering and embellishments and doodles too. A lovely little compact book to help anyone begin their creative writing journey. I’m off to look for more practice books for different styles. One day I’ll be an artist!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book on hand lettering. I loved the uniqueness about it that it had phrases in multiple languages! The chapters were easy to follow. The only thing I wished it had was space to trace the letters and practice. Other than that, it was lovely! I would recommend it!
I really enjoyed the art AND the detailed techniques shared in this book. Also, appreciated that sources were shared for supplies and places to find even more inspiration.
It’s amazing how a bit of decorative lettering and calligraphy can light up any surface. It is a nice skill that anyone can learn and this would be a good book to help the beginner.
I loved the exemplars which, to me, makes this book a keeper so you can refer to it whenever you are wanting some inspiration. The step-by-step on how to go about creating various styles of lettering is indispensable if you are just starting out. Of course, the colour effects and other renderings are lovely to spice things up too.
Beautiful book. 5 stars from me. .
I've long been drawn to the art of calligraphy and lettering, but aside from the formal Gothic scripts I the books that came with my fountain pen, it's hard to know how to start. The modern stylized scripts certainly look.nothing like the old, formal ones I learned.
Enter Special Effects Lettering and Calligraphy. This is a comprehensive guide that takes you from the basics of letter formation - in multiple styles - through embellishments, flourishes, doodling, layouts and everything in between. it is accessible and easy to follow for lettering novices and always encourages the reader to find their own style.
There is a handy section all about the different media preferred by the author, and WHY certain lens or papers are used in different instances.
A very useful resource for those wishing to explore lettering and text illustration.
~Many thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

Special Effects Lettering and Calligraphy : A Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Amazing Lettered Art - Explore New Styles, Colors, and Mediums. This is an inspiring instruction and guidebook. I loved the variety of styles, the use of different languages and their translations, the selection of quotes, and the doodle pages. It is full of fun and colour with lots of wonderful illustrations. Perfect for journal writers, doodlers, and scrapbookers. Overall an excellent book.
A colorful and extensive collection of step-by-step instructions on lettering fonts and even doodles, this is a great guide for beginners and a good brush up for more practiced hands as well.
A great beginner’s guide to calligraphy!
I love how this book starts out and gives you the very basics, including the simple lines and calligraphy basics. It even goes into the difference between handwriting and calligraphy.
Each section has practice sets, step by step points and examples of using each style in a word graphic.
The reason I’m not giving it five stars is the doodle section. I felt like it was kind of tacked on and went far too intricate for this book. The doodle suggestions weren’t basics and deserved their own additional book to do them justice.
However, I’d still definitely recommend this book to anyone that is a newbie to calligraphy.
I am a huge fan of Grace's work, so I snatched this resource up as soon as I saw it. It has something stage of letterer, whether you're just starting out or have been doing it for a while. She has some really interesting effect lettering tutorials in there. If you've seen Grace's work you know she's great at doodling and has a very unique lettering style. If you have ever wondered how she does any of it, check this book out!
A really lovely guide to creating lettered art. My daughter and I spent a fun afternoon filling our bullet journals with beautiful fonts and doodles copied from this book. The step-by-step guides are easy to follow and there are lots of different fonts to copy as well as advice on which mediums to use.
Thank you Netgalley and Quarto publishing for this ARC.
Special Effects Lettering and Calligraphy by Grace Frösén is a beautifully illustrated book, with lots of oodles, doodles, tips and resources. It’s short but to the point. Looking forward to practice the fonts and tips provided.
Great book on handwriting and calligraphy that starts with teaching you about different medium options, and then goes into several different fonts to practice with. For what it is, it does the job, but could be useful if it had actual spots on the page to practice
