Winter Snow is an obit writer. Sure, it's a strange job, but she does it to provide comfort for those left behind. The thing is, she normally doesn't get requests for obituaries for people who are still alive! It looks pretty suss when the old lady ends up dead. Winter needs to uncover the killer before she ends up being the next victim!
Super cute and cozy! I love Winter, Uncle Richard, and the great cast of secondary characters. I hope this turns into a series. I would love to read more from this author and more about this town!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced digital reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review!
New author for me. Loved reading this book. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Hope you enjoy it too.
I certainly hope that this novel is the first in the series. The lead character Winter Snow ( wonderful name) is a professional obituary writer. Her profession requires an eye for detail, the ability to piece and uncover a story. People trust her and based on the frequency of business she receives, she’s good at it. Winter is hired by Leocadia Arlington, a wealthy but somewhat reclusive elderly woman. Ms. Arlington requests an obituary be created for herself. Although old, she doesn’t appear sick. Winter finds herself a chief suspect in Ms Arlington untimely demise. That couples with a mysterious fire and missing blackmail journal push Winter into overdrive. She’s got to clear her name and solve the mystery. This is definitely a who dun it, that will keep you guess. Add in lovable Diva the dog and Winter’s family and you have a cast of exciting characters. I would definitely recommend this read.
Winter Snow is an obituary writer. Not your typical job for a 29-year-old woman, but it developed quite naturally from her journalism major and former position with the local paper in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Individuals often contact Winter as part of their estate planning, but an appointment with Mrs. Leocadia Arlington put an unusual twist as part of her request. Although Winter gave agreement, sorting her puzzlement becomes more than just curiosity.
There are so many surprises interlaced flawlessly in the author’s debut cozy mystery. I loved it! Okay, so one of the romantic sparkles is predictable, but I fell hook, line, and sinker for this couple’s future. The atmospheric writing layered interest in the setting at a storm’s onset and its aftermath, the camaraderie sharing enjoyment of Uncle Richard’s delectable cooking, a special space within Winter’s lakeside cottage on Mamanasco Lake, and the pleasures of view from sunrise to sunset. Characters are well-developed, and each adds a unique flair, as do the paws of Diva, a Great Pyrenees puppy, and a German Shepherd named Max.
The series opener is charming from cover to cover. I’ll be ready to pre-order the next book in the series!
Thank you to Gerri Lewis, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book.

I have enjoyed this book, easy to read but captivating.
Overall well conceived and well written.
I loved the characters, some more than others.
"The Last Word" by Gerri Lewis is possibly the first in a new cozy mystery series. Being that the main character, Winter Snow (yes you read that right), is a professional obituary writer it is probably safe to assume we can see more of her.
There's enough going on in the story to keep you guessing as to who is involved. In the end I got some of it right. I look forward to more of this series.
I loved this book and was on the edge of my seat from start to finish!!! There's hardly anything better than a cute dog and a mystery combination. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!! I highly recommend!!!!!

This book is #1 in a new cozy mystery series, Deady Deadlines Mystery. It was a good cozy mystery, easy read, fun characters, red herrings, and a cute dog, too. Winter Snow (the main character) whose name I didn't really care for - really?! - writes obituaries for a living. Lottie Arlington, a philanthropist in town, asks her to write her obituary and wants it written by the end of the week. Shortly after their first meeting, Winter finds Lottie's body at her home at the bottom of the stairs. Winter, unfortunately, then is the main suspect in her murder. Who is the real killer? Kept me guessing until the end. I look forward to reading more about Winter's upcoming mysteries in her town.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.
The Last Word is the first book in this brand new series. It is full of mystery and intrigue that kept me up reading late into the night. Winter Snow writes obituaries for a living and is intrigued when Leocadia (Lottie) Arlington. a well known philanthropist in her town, asks her to write her obituary, and wants it done by the end of the week. Shortly after their meeting, Winter finds Lottie's body at her home at the bottom of the stairs and quickly becomes the main suspect in her death. This was a twisty fast paced mystery, with lots of suspects. likeable main characters. and a cute little dog named Diva. My thanks to the publisher and netgalley for this ARC to read and review. I can't wait to read the next book in this promising new series.
5/5 ~ Stars
#TheLastWord #NetGalley is a new series filled with colorful characters and a great story!
Winter Snow (love her name) is an obituary writer, which may sound morbid, but Winter seems to enjoy it.
When a new customer needs her services immediately, Winter finds herself immersed in a murder investigation, uncovering clues and secrets others wish she'd left alone.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
