After a horrible breakup and getting fired from her job, Amelia decides to toss caution to the wind and take the European vacation she planned to take with her now ex. After switching around some reservations, she heads straight to the airport to begin her four-week trip across Europe.
Her last stop in Europe is to the tiny island of Asteri, Greece. Here, she meets Takis, the owner of the Ria Hotel, and James, another American staying at the resort. Little does Amelia know her life will be turned upside down in one week.
Overall, I found this to be a charming little love story. I enjoyed all the descriptions of Greece, particularly of the landscape and the locals. Sierra Godfrey created authentic characters I could empathize with as I read. I felt for Amelia as she was let go from her job after her ex sabotaged her code just before a big project release. James doesn’t share much personally in the beginning, but as the reader (or, in my case, the listener), you can tell he’s holding back and that he is sincere. Takis was eccentric and one of my favorites of Godfrey’s characters.
The beginning and the end of the book had me completely invested. Unfortunately for me, the middle felt a bit slow for my liking.
If you’re a fan of romantic tension and the miscommunication trope (or lack of communication), this might be a good fit for you.
Thank you, NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing, for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was entertaining, unexpected, and a fun read. I really enjoyed seeing how the characters grew, both individually and together. The setting was stunning, the characters fun, and it really made me want to take a holiday!
Thank you NetGalley, Publisher and Sierra Godfrey for this audio.
This was such a heartwarming cute sweet book! I loved it! The characters worked so well together and I loved the live story. I recommend!!!
This is one of those feel good books that you read that gives you all the emotions. I’m not spoiling it for anyone but I really liked this book. Definitely a book I would reread over again and I would most certainly recommend it to others.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book. It was my pleasure! ❤️
It should be noted that I love Greece, forced proximity, fake dating, slow burn, and witty banter. This had all of it in some form or another. Plus amazing support characters that made me want to give it all up and buy a hotel in Greece. But it should have been about 100 pages shorter. The relationship plot dragged on with not even a miscommunication trope, but a lack of communication trope? The FMC even gets the amazing advice to talk and leave it all out in the open and just doesn't. And the ending was nearly perfect, again if it had ended maybe 20 pages earlier. Everything got weird when they finally got together. At one point the FMC's declaration of love is this "You are it, Man." thats it, thats the whole thing. I would have preferred if it was a closed door romance because the physical writing felt off. Again a cringeworthy line about "all we want to do is go back to the hotel and have monkey sex"
It sort of ruined the book for me.
3.5
A little predictable and a lot farfetched. However, sometimes you don't need a literary masterpiece and just want a cute, feel-good read and this book fit the bill. I could have used a little more Greece but this story had a great setting and some fun friends.
This was such a wholesome book! I love that it took place in Greece - something I haven't seen yet! The pacing of the book was different from what I used to - but I'm not complaining!
Tropes:
- second chance romance
- strangers to friends to lovers
- gold retriever MMC
among others, but these are my fave!
Recommend as a summer read.
This was a DNF for me. I didn't like the protagonist at all, I felt she was very selfish especially when one second, she didn't want a relationship and the next second, she was mad some guy didn't hit on her.
Cute story with some seriously sexy moments. I really enjoyed this story. I liked the narrator but wish there had been either another narrator to do some of the voices or that this narrator had made different choices with some of the accents. Godfrey does a good job of building the relationship between the reader and characters throughout the book. Some of the pacing could have been better especially in the beginning of the book.
Something happes at Amelia's job and she is fired. She decides to go to Europe for three months until she only has 2 weeks left before she goes back to the US and find a new job. So, she decides to go to a small island in Greece in order to figure out what's next. There she is tricked into marrying another hotel guest, James.
The problem I had with this book is the same that Amelia has with James in the beginning: it's bland. It's not a bad book, but it didn't engage me at any point and I didn't care about the characters or their stories.
It was just an ok book.
The narration was well done.
Thank you Netgalley, author, and publisher for the ARC.
Amelia has just broken up with her boyfriend. They were supposed to go on vacation together in a week. She needs time out to think about life and where she’s headed. She decides to go on the vacation alone (since the tickets were non-refundable) The hardest part of her decision to go on this vacation is the fact she would miss her best friend’s wedding. I liked how this author transports readers to the beautiful city on the Greek island of Asteri. Readers go with Amelia Lang on a wonderful European vacation.
Amelia's ultimate destination on her journey is a little Greek island, where her parents spent their honeymoon. When Amelia meets the hotel's owner, she imagines what it would have been like for her parents. Being among this energetic, caring community and witnessing her friendship with fellow vacationer, James, develop into something more intriguing.
Things get complicated for Amelia and James because of a crisis that impacts not just their lives but also the community of Asteri. And how would they react? Readers are left wondering what the solution might be, throughout the entirety of the novel I found this couple's strange circumstance amusing, as do the people that Amelia meets on the island of Asteri.
From the back cover of the book, it appeared to be an enjoyable romantic comedy. I leaped at the chance to review an audiobook on NetGalley. I usually don't read books with a lot of profanity or explicit sex scenes, as you may have observed from reading my blog reviews. This book contained relatively little profanity, but there were a couple of sensual passages that I skipped in order to read the rest of this fun adventure. Aside from that, I like the book's engaging, caring characters, lighthearted situations, and laid-back atmosphere. Ri Paige, the reader of the book, was someone I enjoyed. It made the narrative come to life.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced audio copy of this book. Amelia's breaking point exit leads into an adventure of a lifetime. The authors description of Asteri and the people there makes me want to visit. I could only hope to have the luck of meeting a handsome man and inheriting a hotel while I was there. This story had me laughing, tense and hopeful throughout the book.
This was an easy listen! I found myself engaged with the story the entire time I was listening (versus zoning out). The story was captivating--it was a sweet romance with a happy ending! The narrator's voice was easy to listen to.
Sometimes for sanity’s sake you have to abandon everything of your dull life for an adventure! This is what Amelia did in this book. She explored different parts of Europe and ended up in Greece. She meets quite the eclectic group in this forgotten island. Meeting James and struggling to turn around the ramshackle hotel bonded two strangers. Two Americans trying to embrace Greek way of life. I really like all of the characters in this book. This was a great story. Amelia felt guilt abandoning her life in the U.S. but sometimes once you’ve left and returned not all that glitters is gold. Everything worked out in the end, reuniting with the best friend, getting her dream job and getting her man! The narrator did an excellent job, Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book had me hooked right from the start when Amelia throws a mug at her ex boyfriend. Honestly, I was laughing right from the start of the book. I enjoyed every second of this book, I found myself not wanting to put it down. I loved all the characters in the book and all of their antics. This is such a fun and quick read, I highly recommend checking it out!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars
Happy publication to Sierra Godfrey and The Second Chance Hotel! Thank you to Sierra Godfrey, Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks, and NetGalley ( @netgalley ) for allowing me to read an ALC (Advanced Listener 🎧 Copy) for an honest review!
📅 Tuesday, September 26, 2023 was the pub date for The Second Chance Hotel by Sierra Godfrey. The narrator🎙️for this audiobook 🎧 is Ri Paige. 📅
Amelia Lang has found herself in the lowest of low places. She was recently fired for throwing a coffee mug at her co-worker, ironically ex-boyfriend, after placing false blame on Amelia in an attempt to get ahead in his career. Amelia escapes reality and runs from processing her feelings by traveling across the world. She meets new friends and has a few flings, finding herself in Asteri, Greece on the final leg of her journey.
She chooses to vacation at the Ria hotel, a hotel that her parents visited frequently in their youth. They always raved about the hotel and the charming couple that owned it. Amelia arrives only to learn that one half of the couple remains. Yorgos is now widowed.
Business seems to be suffering but another guest named James arrives a few days after Amelia checks in. The story that unfolds will make you experience a wide array of emotion but without fail, you will be engaged and you will laugh.
Will an accidental drunken marriage and inheritance of Hotel Ria result in only friendship or more for Amelia and James? I can’t wait for you to find out!
I recommend this book if you are a fan of starting over, forced proximity, accidental marriage, and Greece.
A solid 3.5 stars, cute storyline and I always love a story in a great setting, in this case, Greece. The story itself was pretty predictable. Boy and girl meet, accidentally get married (and inherit a hotel) and then deal with the aftermath. Nothing shocking in how it plays out but it did keep my interest until the end.
(I listened to the audio version and would recommend.)
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with this recording.
This is a delightful book that will make the reader smile and occasionally laugh out loud. The premise is one that has been used often--getting married while drunk (and in this case in a foreign land where main characters don't speak the language) and the aftermath. In this case there is the added twist that it is on a Greek Island and the newly wedded couple is gifted a hotel by the dying owner. There is a lot more to the story, but the descriptions of the landscape, the food, and most of all, the drink makes the reader drop everything and jump on a plane. The secondary characters are wonderful also-especially Celia (Amelia;s boss, who is a delight. I "read" this book as an audiobook and I think the narrator brought a lit of insight and nuance to the book which made it pleasure to listen to.
This is the perfect book for a nice, warm vacation when you're in the mood for a rocky romance. Our main character starts out like many of us, working and then becoming dissatisfied with her boy friend and then her job (which gets dissatisfied with her) and off she goes on a vacation to clear her mind. All goes as planned until she has too much to drink and makes some questionable decisions.
The perfect book for lazy days!
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
I had seen mixed views about this book, but I absolutely adored it! From the beginning when Amelia’s life in San Fransisco goes awry and she decides to go explore Europe; to the end, when…I’m not going to spoil it for you! I loved every single character in this book. It reminded me a lot of The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella with the people at the hotel and the FMC & MMC. I also loved that book! The character development from both Amelia and James made me super happy. I loved seeing Amelia develop a friendship with James and all of the other inhabitants on the island. Everyone deserves a second chance at everything, and this book reminded me of just that!
