Title: Fall
Author: Tracy Clark
Series: Det. Harriett Foster Book #2
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Pub Date: December 5, 2023
My Rating: 4 Stars
Pages: 349
I was drawn to this story as we lived in the Chicago area and loved it. True there is good, as well as the bad and ugly.
Thankfully our experienced was "All Good"
Story starts with two Chicago aldermen are dead in what seems to be suicides, however both received
a message – ‘this is what happens when you become a traitor like Judas’ and each have thirty dimes left on their bodies.
Harriet “Harri” Foster is a member of the Chicago PD and is proud to serve. She however, is still grieving from the murder of her fourteen year old son Reginald ‘Reg’ who was killed by a thief who wanted his bike. Then there was the unexpected suicide of her former partner.
Harriet and her new partner Vera Li have been assigned the alderman cases but have very little to go on. ~ Chicago has a reputation of city corruption and, political scandal connected to crime,
As the saying goes it is easier to count the politicians who haven’t gone to prison than counting who haven’t! Yep- These two have their hands full trying to get to the truth when there are so many lying.
Harri and Li are a GREAT team – I am already looking forward to next in this series!!
Want to thank NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for December 5, 2023.
This second installment in the Harriet Foster series does not disappoint! I was introduced to Tracy Clark by the first Foster novel Hide and was instantly smitten with Foster and her cohorts. This second installment picks right up and provides the same edge-of-your-seat action and surprises. The characters, plot and setting are all thoroughly developed and detailed and our heroine is someone to love and pity all at the same time. It's smart and cunning and keeps you interested from page 1. Love this series! Can't wait for #3.
Many thanks to both Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Fall, by Tracy Clark. Expected publication December 5, 2023.
In this second book in the Detective Harriet Foster series, Detective Harriet Foster is on the case before a killer can strike again. But even with the help of her partner, Detective Vera Li, Harri has little to go on and a lot at risk. While Harri is still reeling from the death of her son, crime doesn't pause for life to happen. When two aldermen are found dead, Foster and Li are tasked with figuring out what happened, and they need to do it quickly.
There was a secondary case that involved Harri's former partner but it felt a bit distracting to me. There seemed to be more than enough going on with the murder of the aldermen, in my opinion.
Hands down, my favorite part of the book was reading how Harri's relationship with her new partner, Li, is progressing. I think they blend together perfectly - and Li's comments made me laugh more than a few times.
I feel Fall can be read as a standalone. If you love police procedurals containing mystery, revenge, murder, and more, this one is for you!
This is the 2nd book in the Detective Harriet Foster series. I found the first one on Amazon and really enjoyed. I was excited to see book 2 on netgalley. Unfortunately, as much I enjoyed the first one, I found this one to be really slow. I had a really hard time staying focused. I just wasn't drawn into the story or the dialogue. This one wasn't for me. Not sure I'll continue the series.
Thank you #netgalley and #thomas&mercer for the eARC.
Chicago’s aldermen are dying by the hands of someone with a message about what happens when you become a traitor, a rat, a Judas. Are all the Aldermen potential victims now or is one of them the suspected killer? Former Alderman Marin let shiny things make her greedy, soon she spiraled and got caught. Prison cost her respect, all those nice things but most of all, her young daughter. Now she’s done her time, being released and ready to rebuild her relationship with her daughter. Just one glitch in her plan, she’s the number one suspect for murdering a former crooked colleague. Charlotte is a close friend and also Marin’s lawyer. Why, Oh Why, don’t clients listen to their attorneys? Marin can’t keep her mouth shut and it never helps her case.
As a Detective, Harriet, doesn’t have support or respect from the predominant male squad room. She lost her previous partner to an apparent suicide and it still haunts her. Now she’s receiving calls from blocked or unknown numbers threatening her and that partner’s family. Harriet has a case to solve, politics are putting extra attention to the safety of the remaining Aldermen. Her personal life is a mess and her focus is distracted.
There were characters I remembered from the first in series, but this can be read on its own. There are plenty of viable suspects and even more changes of direction in the investigation. Sometimes it’s not about the who, it’s the why. I made a few small guesses as to the perpetrator and figured out some clues. There was still much to unravel and enough action to keep me up past bedtime. Definitely a series I would enjoy reading more of.
A digital advance reader copy of “Fall” Detective Harriet Foster #2 by Tracy Clark, Published by Thomas & Mercer, was provided by NetGalley. These are all my own honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily without compensation.
This was my first Tracy Clark novel and it won’t be my last. The 2nd in the Detective Harriet Foster series therefore I’ll have to go back and read the 1st one!
Harriet Foster, Harri, finds herself on a case where a serial killer has a very specific target; alderman of Chicago. We go on her journey with her partner Vera Li who has some very quirky come backs and sounds like a hoot to work with. Still struggling over the death of her son, Harri has to manoeuvre through this new version of her life without him, continuing to struggle each day with her grief. Her detective prowess keeps her focused more than ever on her work, determined to catch the murderer at any cost.
Another great author to add to my watch list.
Detective Harriet Foster and her partner, Detective Vera Li, are called to a death scene that first presents as a suicide. One of the female Aldermen of Chicago is found in a parking garage inside her car with a gunshot wound to her head and the gun in her hand. A closer exam indicates that this was actually a murder, and the Harriet and her team are on the case, when second alderman is murdered in his office. Are the deaths related? Do they have anything to do with the recent release of a former alderman after serving time for illegal behavior in her governing role? Is she out for revenge, or is someone else killing the council members? It's a great read, and I can't wait for the next book about Harriet!
Fall is the second book in Tracy Clark's Detective Harriet Foster series, and it's even better than the first!
The main case centers on the murders of aldermen in Chicago, but interwoven with the fast-paced casework are Harriet's grief over some recent losses, and a new threat involving her former partner. She's also tentatively building trust with her new partner, Vera Li, and the developing friendship between the two is a highlight of the book.
Clark's writing is fantastic--smooth prose, perfectly placed details, vivid characters, and some passages almost have the feel of spoken-word poetry. (I should check out the audiobook!) I had to pause several times while reading just to admire the way she put together a sentence or a flawless exchange of dialogue.
I'll have to wait impatiently for the next Harriet Foster book, but I'm excited to read Clark's other books in the meantime. Huge thanks to Netgalley, Tracy Clark, and publisher Thomas & Mercer for an advance digital copy of Fall, which I enjoyed so much that I'll be purchasing my own hard copy on pub day!
This is the first book I've read by Tracy Clark but I promise it won't be the last. I like her writing style, her characters, and the easy way her book flowed. Detective Harriot Foster is leading her team in trying to solve the murder of an alderman in Chicago. Being a political figure, her murder gets top priority. All leads go in circles and Harri and her team are scrambling to follow up on all. There are so many suspects in the aldermen's possibly shady work and family. Then another alderman is found dead and the leads may add up to a similar suspect however there is no proof. The team is working day and night as bodies add up.
I truly enjoyed this read! I like Harriot and her partner Detective Li, they are fun and intense and good at what they do. I know there will be another as there is a thread left to still solve. I definitely recommend this book! Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC. Get this book!
My students like reading about strong multidimensional characters, particularly if they are racially diverse. I think they will enjoy this one
i have read others by this author and have liked them. This one was a little slow for me, with two many backstories that didn't add much to the plot. Her main character is likeable and relatable and will try others of her books in the future. This is book two of the series but you can read it as a stand alone
Fall by Tracy Clark is book 2 in the Detective Harriet Foster thriller series. Fall is compelling, action-packed, and suspenseful. It's a good addition to the police procedural genre.
In the second book in the Detective Harriet Foster thriller series, author Tracy Clark weaves a twisted journey into the underbelly of Chicago as Harriet and her team work to unmask a serial killer stalking the city’s aldermen. Fall has engaging and likable characters. The story is a page-turner.
I love the line about endings did not have to be sorrowful or leave a scar. Sometimes endings cleanse and burn away the bad, making room for other things.
I would recommend adding this to your to-be-read list, as you will not be disappointed. I want more in this series! The author's writing style is engaging, and the story kept me engaged and involved in the drama.
I would highly recommend this author and this book and series.

Harriet Foster is still haunted by the senseless murder of her son and the unexpected suicide of her former partner but is still driven to "serve and protect" as a member of the Chicago PD. She and her partner are assigned the murder of an alderman that seems to have an obvious suspect, but everything just seems off. Harri and her partner Vera Li work well together, bouncing ideas off each other, and Harri is slowly starting to trust her new partner and squad. This was an intriguing case, and there's an interesting setup for future books. I can't wait to see how things play out.
Thanks to Thomas & Mercer for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley.
Tracy Clark is an author who automatically jumps to the top of my very high tbr list. Harriett, or as we know her Harri, is a Chicago detective with personal baggage she tries hard to conceal but the death of her son is always in her mind, along with the death of her recent detective partner. Living in Chicago I appreciate the realistic writing of Chicago politics, corruption deeply entrenched through the generations. So, everything comes into play in this second novel, with Harri and her new partner investigating the murder of a Chicago politician, soon to be followed by another one. At the same time her sons killer is up for a hearing and she dramatically discovers the possibility of her last partners betrayal. Fast read, setting us up for a third novel.
Fall is the second entry in Tracy Clark's Harriet Foster series and it is just as good as the first book Hide. Harriet Foster, a detective in Chicago, returns in the story of a killer who is targeting aldermen in the city and leaving bags of dimes at the crime scene. Foster and her partner Li scramble to figure out the motive before another city official is killed. What they uncover is that certain aldermen are willing to do anything to get a deal done. This book delves more into Foster's personality and the way grief has shaped the way she handles everyday tasks. It also introduces a sinister force who Foster realizes was blackmailing her former partner and is now threatening her. That thread is left unresolved, hopefully for a third book. I've always enjoyed Tracy Clark's books. She writes complex characters and makes the city of Chicago an intriguing backdrop her stories. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I read Tracy Clark's previous book, Hide, that followed Detective Harriet Foster and her new partner Vera Li. I enjoyed it so much and as soon as I saw the Fall pop up on NetGalley, I knew I had to snag it!
A huge thank you to Thomas & Mercer for granting me access to this title! The Fall, once again, follows Detective Harriet Foster and her budding partnership with Detective Vera Li. This book also gives a lot more page time to secondary characters at the precinct, which I appreciated. Harri's life is still idling and her son's murderer is once again getting his day in court to potentially shorten his jail time, but Harri quickly puts an end to that. Harri is deeply haunted by the loss of her son, Reg.
While Harri is still reeling personally, crime doesn't pause for life to happen. When two aldermen are found dead, Foster and Li are tasked with figuring out what happened, and they need to do it fast. All eyes are on the police to solve this crime, bring justice, and tie things up nicely with a pretty bow. However, when all the parties connected to the crime are liars, how can you possibly gleam the truth?
Between the political scandals, the city corruption, and their continued battle to hold their ground in a male dominated playground, Foster and Li have their work cut out.
I liked the sequel in the series, but I found it to be a bit slow. I never got to a point where I felt myself turning the pages at rapid speed and refusing to put the book down. It took me about a week to read this and it truthfully was because it never turned suspenseful. I also managed to figure out who did It about 1/3 of the way in and felt myself wanting to shake them to figure it out. All in all, solid follow up, but I am hoping the next really hits it out of the ballpark!
I absolutely loved this book and this series. Tracy Clark has become a must read for me. Foster and Li and the rest of crew are back with murders turning up everywhere. This book had it all murder, action and mystery. I highly recommend this book to anyone loving police procedural books.

Tracy Clark skillfully crafts a captivating plot that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. The story takes unexpected twists and turns, with jaw-dropping revelations that maintain a constant element of surprise. The police procedural aspect is seamlessly integrated into the narrative, adding depth and authenticity to the investigative process.
The well-developed characters, particularly Detective Harriet Foster, bring a compelling dynamic to the story. Harriet's determination and teamwork, alongside her partner Detective Vera Li, create a solid foundation for the engaging plot. "The empty chair, the quieter house, the people missing almost burned like fire against her skin, consuming the comfort and peaceful feeling that had once been there..."
I do love a police procedural, and #Fall by Tracy Clark is a very, very good one. My first inro to Harriet Foster and her team, and although it seems a lot happened to Harriet in #1 Hide, Clark doesn't beat us over the head with it, or assume we've read the first book in this series. We get a very good sense of what Harriet has been through and is carrying, what factors may or may not influence her decision-making going forward. A nice ode to Chicago, as well. Excellent plotted, with some humor and a really good twist. Highly recommend.
P.S. Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC.
