Absolutely brilliant. I will consume any form of media from the hilariously cheeky, Philomena Cunk.
If you’re going to read this book I HIGHLY recommend listening to it via audiobook, as it is narrated by Diane Morgan playing her alter ego, Philomena Cunk. I mistakenly tried to listen to this while working and I didn’t get any work done because I was so wrapped up in laughing at the never ending jokes and one liners that are served throughout this book.
Buckle in for a ride as persona, Philomena Cunk, goes the the alphabet of random aspects of the world with her ridiculously incorrect, and yet perceptive, understanding of the history and work sings of the world.
Thank you NetGalley for and ARC of this audiobook. I recommend it to everyone looking for a cheeky, sometimes satirical laugh. I will certainly be purchasing this audiobook on its release date to listen to it again and again.
Cunk On Everything by Philomena Cunk
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I saw this in NetGalley and absolutely HAD to request it!! I love the Cunk on Earth series, it’s absolutely hilarious and the book version was exactly the same!
The humour is just so daft and sarcastic and so up my street! I rarely read more humour- based books but god I loved this one! I was literally laughing out loud several times during the listening of this audiobook and the fact that it’s narrated by the author made it extra comedic!
Surprisingly, there are actually a few bits of history told in the book and you can learn a thing or two from the book! But generally it’s just a nice, refreshing break and full of laughs!
Diane Morgan is an absolute genius!!
This book is hilarious - laugh out loud hilarious - made even funnier by Philomena reading the audiobook herself. Excellent touch!
The 'facts'/jokes come thick and fast and you really have to be paying attention as the pacing is quick - but this makes it all the more funny. It is read in such a straight and deadpan way, it's sometimes easy to miss the gags straight away, and takes a couple of seconds to clock - but it's absolutely brilliant.
Loved it!! Definitely recommend - think it would be hilarious to buy for someone that isn't aware of Philomena Cunk, and see what the reaction is haha!
Diane Morgan's deadpan humor as the fictional character Philomena Cunk translates perfectly in the audiobook of Cunk on Everything! I might have enjoyed just reading it, but hearing her delivery felt like the perfect medium to get the full effect of her book.
A few really great laugh-out-loud, or even just grin and chuckle moments, the book is probably worth it just for the laughs. However, there is quite a few references to things only Brits will understand; I consider myself rather affluent in British books and movies and there were still many pop culture references to people/places/things that went over my head.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This book is as dry and British as a bad scone. It reminded me a lot of reading the Fantastic Beasts book when I was in grade school. It is an encyclopedia of truly random nonsense in vaguely alphabetical order, and each entry is basically just a few one liners. If you like Philomena Cunk's Netflix show, grab the audiobook because it's quite similar.
I will listen to anything Philomena Cunk wants to talk about. Hilarious! I had to be careful while driving because I would start laughing so hard! I discovered Philomena through friends of mine and I have worked hard to spread the word about her brilliance. The audiobook is read by the author - perfection. While I am sure the book would also be a good read, there is something about hearing it right from Cunk that makes it all that much more amazing.
A month or two ago I was introduced to Philomena Cunk on the Netflix series, Cunk on Earth. The satirical documentary had me laughing, so when I saw the book, Cunk on Everything, I knew I had to read it. As luck would have it, I was able to receive an advance audiobook copy through NetGalley. Now instead of just reading Philomena Cunk's words, I could hear them in her own voice, the way it was meant to be heard. I don't feel like reading the book would be quite the same experience.
The book is organized like an encyclopedia, going through various topics in alphabetical order. Philomena Cunk is hysterical, with her absurd observations and mixing up people or countries with similar names to make bizarre statements. There were many moments that had me laughing out loud, like when she said Pluto wasn't a planet anymore because they discovered it was actually Mickey Mouse's dog, and that The Beatles didn't have 6 legs like a beetle, but 8 legs like a spider and made girls scream, like a spider. It's such an unexpected perception of the world, and I loved it.
I will note that the book is obviously very British, which isn't surprising given that Philomena Cunk is British. But, I feel like there were a bunch of British references that I just didn't get because I'm not British myself. At times I found my mind wandering a bit because she was discussing a topic I didn't know anything about. Also, this book is originally from 2018, so it felt a little dated when she would make references to the queen, who has since passed.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hachette Audio, and Grand Central Publishing for the free audiobook. All opinions in my review are exclusively my own.
I really liked this audio, although I have some pros and cons for consuming this way. On the one hand, listening means you get to hear the queen Philomena Philomeni herself read the book to you, which is awesome and makes it feel like watching her show. But because of the setup, with short little tidbits about different things following the letters of the alphabet, it probably works better as the type of book that you flip through at random to enjoy rather than reading cover to cover. And that’s hard to do with an audio!! But it’s fun to pop in and listen to a few passages at a time.
Many years ago. I delighted in reading Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary. Her writing is nowhere near as good. This stuff may well be very funny as part of an act, but going from definition to definition over and over it merely reads as an owed to stupidity.
I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review, and honestly, I love every minute of it. Immediately upon starting this audiobook, I was sad because I was looking forward to Philomena Cunk's deadpan delivery and the first voice I heard was someone else. That only lasted for a few moments and I was pleased for the remainder of the experience. Having seen Cunk On Earth on Netflix, I was really excited to hear her take on... everything! The delivery is perfect, the subject matter is excellent (although I'm not enough of an anglophile to understand every reference) I found myself laughing out loud several times. If you enjoy the Netflix series, or anything else Diane Morgan has done, you'll enjoy this immensely.
I think that this book is best enjoyed as an audiobook and Philomena does a fantastic narration in her style of making you feel that she genuinely 100% believes everything in this book is the truth. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Philomena Cunk's other works. I will need to start calling more people 'boffins' when they are an expert in areas.
I didn’t know what to expect when I started listening to this audiobook but I enjoyed this quite a bit. I have seen some of the videos posted on Instagram and found Cunk quite funny but don’t know much about the character or their other work.
At times I would think this might be a bit boring, kind of like reading the dictionary but most times, I found myself laughing out loud and sometimes groaning along with the jokes. I think it would be best in print as a coffee table book as you could pick it up and flick around and read a bit here and there whereas with the audiobook you are kind of stuck listening to it all in order. I did bookmark a few spots to let my husband or family hear it later because I found them that funny and also found myself repeating the jokes later as well but with much less success since I don’t have Cunk’s perfect dry deadpan delivery.
Glad I came upon this audiobook and would recommend to anyone that enjoys this style of humour, malapropisms, word play and twisted history.
I received a audiobook copy of this book through Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
My thanks to NetGalley for the audiobook.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
I really enjoy the persona of Philomena Cunk, and this book does an excellent job of allowing her to show through. Glad I got to read this as an audiobook, Diane Morgan as always, is superb. Without her inflections, I am sure the book would have been rather dull.
That being said, the humor started to wear a bit thin as I wrapped up the book. Half of the enjoyment of watching the Cunk mockumentaries is witnessing the person she is interviewing squirm, and that naturally wouldn't translate into a book monologue.
Overall, very funny, made me laugh a bit too much at times, but the book struggled to maintain my interest throughout the whole recording.
Cunk goes from A to Z, discussing a variety of topics about the world’s current events and history. I loved her mockumentary and desperately wanted this ALC, and it did not disappoint. This book was hilarious, laugh out loud! I had tears within the first 5 minutes of listening 😅 I finished in 2 days and didn’t want to put it down, listening every chance I had.
As others have said, 10/10 no notes, definitely my favorite (and so far only 5 star read) for September! This is Cunk’s debut in writing and I will forever read/listen to anything she writes in the future.
If you also enjoy her humor and TV programs, do yourself a favor and read the audiobook!!
First, thank you to Hachette Audio and Grand Central Publishing for allowing me to listen to this audiobook! I have never seen Cunk on Earth but my friends have always been telling me I would enjoy it! This did not disappoint, had be absolutely rolling while I listened to it in the car. I was laughing so hard and no book has ever been able to make me giggle and just feel so happy in a long while. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys being silly!
A great read, presented with Cunk’s fantastic dead on humor. A wonderful listen. I thoroughly enjoyed the A-Z of Everything by Philomena Cunk.
Thank you to Hatchette Audio and Netgalley for my advanced copy of the audiobook!
4.5 stars rounding up. If you loved the show Cunk on Earth (like I did), you will love this. The humour absolutely carries over. However, I have no clue what the physical book reads like, so I seriously recommend this audiobook. The narration is what makes it. I listened to this while I was doing monotonous work and it vastly improved by day.
It was a bit slower in the back half compared to the first half (5 stars for the beginning and 4 for the end).
My first audiobook ever! And what a way to kick things off!
It was so, so good. The recordings were clear and well thought out, great editing and narration. Amazing job from the producers!
About the book it's just another masterpiece from Philomena Cunk herself, the most knowledgeable person in the history of mankind. I really do not need to read, or listen, to another book after this. I have all the knowledge I need right here! It was funny, smart, and a great way to spend an afternoon.
When in doubt, just read Cunk on Everything. It's out tomorrow, September 26th.
Signing off,
B.
(Free ARC from NetGalley and Hachette Audio that I chose to review after listening)
I did enjoy watching Cunk on Earth and was excited to listen to this audiobook. I love her dry humor, and her delivery is amazing. This book, Cunk on Everything, is her going through a series of topics alphabetically and defining things with her own brand of flair. There were lots of amusing sections, but there were longer stretches where the format didn't thrill me. Listening to the audiobook, I realized how much of my enjoyment is in her expressions and gestures. I missed seeing her face while she discussed these topics.
This was a very interesting book. British actress, comedian, and writer Diane Morgan's character Philomena Cunk tells us about "everything" in this encyclopedia of her "knowledge".
It was almost like all of her thoughts and pop culture had an accident in her brain and this is the result. If you've ever seen Saturday Night Live's character The Girl You Wouldn't Want to Talk to at a Party - this is an extreme British version. I found it very funny throughout. Unfortunately, there were a few UK pop culture references that went over my head. I actually think the best part of the book was when Cunk was just giving her opinions of something, like telephones. I wish more of the book had been like this. It also looks like this is a reissue, since this was first published in 2018.
Thank you to Hachette Audio and NetGalley for an ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
