Kelley Armstrong has written a delightful adventure as part of her A Rip Through Time series. I always enjoy the period touches in this series, as observed by Mallory who is a 21st century detective who accidentally time-traveled and found herself in Victorian Edinburgh. She has a lot to say about the clothing for women in that time period, for one thing. In this novella, Mallory follows Alice, the young maid in the Gray household, after Alice receives a letter that seems to disturb her. Danger follows, but the outcome creates a better relationship between Mallory/Catriona and Alice, which I hope will bode well for further full-length novels in this outstanding series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Subterranean Press for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Short novella with Mallory Atkinson still stuck in Victorian times. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I loved this book. It is a novella, so a quicker read than the rest of the series but every bit as good. Mallory and Dr. Gray are victims of a human trafficking ring. The characters are front and center, though. Every interaction allows the friendships to show how they have grown closer. The mystery doesn't disappoint, but the interactions between Mallory, Duncan, Isla, and Hugh shine.
A delightful quick romp around Victorian Scotland with time traveler Mallory. You learn the backstory of Alice the pickpocket as Mallory tries to solve another mystery. No murders but definitely some bad guys. I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed this book. I haven’t read the earlier books in this series in years but Ms. Armstrong does a great job in reminding you of the circumstances without bashing you over the head with the facts. There’s a lot of action and it stays in period the whole time. #Cocktails&Chloroform #NetGallery
This review is my opinion and my opinion only. I did received this book pre-publishing from Netgalley, but this review are my thoughts and mine alone. I LOVE this series! This story is a novella in the Rip Through Time series. Since it’s a novella, It’s a fast read.
In this novella, we get to know Alice’s background. Alice is a fellow maid of Mallory.
Mallory is a detective from our time who feel through a rip and we back in time. Mallory is trying to show Alice that she is a reliable person.
I love how Kelley Armstrong makes her characters multilayered. Kelley’s world building is incredible. I highly recommend this series!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Cocktails and Chloroform by Kelley Armstrong in exchange for an honest review. I couldn't wait to read this short story in the Rip in Time universe. I have been enjoying Mallory and her adventures in the Victorian Era Scotland. This was a fun little story with excitement, daring escapes and Russian cocktails. Another great book by Kelley Armstrong.
This is a novella, the third release in the series. To introduce the series to new readers, in modern times, Detective Mallory Atkinson was chasing a suspect when she somehow fell in a rip through time and ended up in Victorian Edinburgh in a much younger woman's body. Someone recognized her and took her back to the house where the girl worked as a maid. Catriona - the woman whose body she inhabits - was not well liked or trusted.
Later on Mallory would realize how incredibly lucky she had been, as Victorian Edinburgh had few jobs for women, and a woman alone with nowhere to go would have few options: marry, work in service (if she could get a position), prostitution, or death.
In this book, Alice is a young parlor maid in the house who had been well acquainted with Catriona, and continues to be suspicious of Mallory. One day Alice receives a letter and slips out of the house. Mallory follows her since this is very unusual, and finds herself at a dance hall - not something she would associate with Alice. She is keeping an eye out for Alice when she notices that women are being escorted from the room and not returning. Then Dr. Grey shows up which turns out to be lucky for both her and Alice.
I received an e-arc of this book from the publisher Subterranean Press via NetGalley, and voluntarily read and reviewed it.
Fun fast visit! I’m hooked on this series. There are times I literally feel like I’m sauntering through this era with the characters. I can’t wait for more.
I love the Victorian era and reading about adventures during that time period. When a modern day police officer conducts investigations in the body of a young woman in that time frame, it is interesting to say the least. The characters are fascinating and the story draws readers in and keeps them captivated.
One year ago, I read the book A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong. I did not know at that time it would become a series. It was not in my typical genre, but I read it anyways and I quite enjoyed it. I was absolutely thrilled to read The Poisoners Ring when it became available. I rarely commit to a series. I prefer to read books that stand alone. Mostly because I feel that I lose interest, and often, the authors don't continue to provide enough excitement to keep up with the momentum of the original storyline. This is not the case with the 3rd title of the series; Cocktails & Chloroform is as exciting as the name implies. I have hounded Netgalley in hopes of receiving an early copy to read and review. As soon as I received it, I abandoned the book I had been reading. I immediately devoured this book. And though I was a bit saddened that it was shorter than the other books in the series, written as a novella. I was not disappointed by its content. The book has held to the same structure and storyline as the first two books in the series. It had plenty of action and adventure to feel as if it was a full-length novel. It also continued the main characters' friendships/relationships that have been developing from books 1 & 2 with the same depth. I am so glad to have been chosen to read and review this book. I truly hope the author continues this series as I must know what will happen next.
Cocktails and Chloroform, A Rip Through Time Novella, by Kelley Armstrong.
This was such a great novella. Do read the previous books in this wonderful series before reading this novella to fully understand the characters and how they are developing.
In this novella, we get to know Alice a bit more. She is a young, think middle school, girl working as a maid in Victorian times for a more open minded family. She has had a difficult life and has put up a lot of walls. It is great to see of few of those wall come down, if only for a few moments, in this novella.
As I've mentioned for this series previously, the main character, Mallory, is a present day Detective who somehow traveled back in time into the body of a late teen/young adult with a scandalous reputation.
Kelley Armstrong pulls of this time travel series in a way that not many could. I don't come away with any feelings of "this or that couldn't be". Also, she does an amazing job making you feel like you are in Victorian times, which I love. As an aside, I am not a history major and would not necessarily pick up on time period errors. But, she has me convinced with her beautiful words that she knows what she is describing.
Loved it. Five stars.

Cocktails and Chloroform is a novella in the Rip Through Time series set after the second book. Mallory is a modern day detective trapped in the body of a housemaid in Victorian England. Mallory is trying win over the hearts of all the people who the body she currently inhabits mistreated and throw off her bad reputation. Catching the young parlormaid, Alice slipping out of the house, Mallory follows to only find trouble as young women are being sold and shipped over seas. Mallory endures another action packed adventure to save the day along side her boss, Dr, Duncan Gray, and the young Alice where a few minor explosions come in handy. Exciting and action packed, Cocktails and Chloroform is another fun adventure in Victorian England for the brilliant modern day lady detective. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
A fun adventure in this world that Kelley Armstrong has created. Mallory gets to show off her detective skills and her chemistry with Dr. Gray is wonderful.
Excellent fast based mini adventure with Mallory and Alice. In this novella, we get to know more about Alice's background, and her family. My only wish for this story was that it was longer!
Thank you Netgalley and Subterranean Press for the ARC!
I really like this fast paced little adventure of mallory following Alice and you definitely need to read the other 2 books or you won't have any Idea about what's going on. I really like the books but I do at time find it hard to really invest in all these relationships mallory is making when if given the chance she would leave in a heartbeat. Don't get me wrong I understand why she wants to go back but It just makes investing in all these relationships that much harder.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this arc.
This was another excellent addition to the Rip Through Time series by Kelley Armstrong, and I am absolutely HOOKED! This is one of my very favorite series at the moment, and the writing in this novella is just as absorbing as in the first two novels of the series.
We learn a good deal more about Alice in this installment, and we also get a good amount of Mallory/Dr. Gray time, which is always delicious. I'm waiting for the eventual payoff of them realizing their feelings for each other, but in the meantime, this slooooooow burn is agonizing and delightful.
Highly recommend!
A fun, quick adventure set in the A Rip through Time world. All the main characters are back, as well as more time with Alice. Armstrong’s writing is always enjoyable, and the novellas are always such fun additions to her worlds!
This is another example of Kelley Armstrong’s talent. She was able to capture adventure and depth in a Novella without it feeling rushed. This is book 2.5 in A Rip Through Time series.
Malory is a modern day policewoman trapped in the body of a Victorian housemaid, Alice. Malory has to solve the case while trying to win over Alice. Her work is never done!
Malory is an interesting character, I’d even call her quirky, in a good way. A strong main character lead who definitely finds herself in trouble at times, however she can rely on her intelligence and instincts. I greatly enjoyed the interactions between the characters, it wasn’t forced and felt natural.
I would highly recommend this book!
I answered no to the "will your library purchase this title". I am assuming this novela will only be in digital format, but if it does go out in print I will definitely purchase.
I love this series! We learned more about the victorian era and especially about Alice. I loved the exchange between Gray and Mallory on the boat! This was just a fun excursion that was very different than the novels. Giving some wonderful insight into who Catriona "used to be". Can't wait for more!
