A different sort of Luanne Rice- a murder mystery! Someone killed Maddie - but who and why? Rice has a nice way with characters and this was no exception. There are secrets, lies and family as well as intrepid detective. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
Thank you for the chance to read this ARC copy early and to Thomas & Mercer as well. Also thank you to Netgalley.
I haven't read too many books by Luanne Rice. But I love finding new authors to give a chance and now I have more books to add to my never ending TBR.
I love a book that grabs from page one! This book does just that. This story makes one be connected to the readers. The twists, turns, suspense, mystery, and compassion make this book worth reading.
Will you know the ending before it happens? I think not it will keep you guessing till the end.
Good story
This book was full of interwoven relationships, who is/was married to who, which fisherman is related to which restaurant owner, who's lawyer is she? In the midst of all that, you have Conor, a detective from nearby Connecticut, and his girlfriend Kate, who happens to be an art gallery owner. Convenient, when the murdered woman is an artist.
I feel like this book moved along nicely, characters were explained, and for those who have read earlier books by this author, her beloved area of Black Hall, CT, is in the story. The Ocean House hotel sounds like a beautiful place to visit, even in the middle of the blizzard that is happening in the beginning of the book. Maddie, her daughter CeCe, and Maddie's sister Hadley have close relationships, but Hadley wasn't aware of everything. Maddie kept some secrets, and those secrets might have led to her death.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Maddie took her daughter to a path on the beach during a snow storm to meet someone. When she is murdered her daughter disappears. Who wanted her dead? There are a lot of people in her life who aren’t who they appear. This is a good story with a little girl you will root for. There are a few twists in the story too. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
What a tangled web of deceit. It kept going back and forth who were the bad guys. Maddie took her daughter out on the beach in the middle of a snowstorm to meet someone. Suddenly, she had Cece hide and not come out until she came and got her. Then Maddie was shot and killed. CeCe came out and tried to wake her up. Her sister was coming to meet them and when Hadley realized they had been gone an hour in the blizzard, she went out on the beach and found her body. A detective and his girlfriend followed her out since she was so distraught and were with her when she found Maddie. Then they realized CeCe was missing.
There were parts of the story that was in CeCe's point of view. That was interesting as she was little and didn't really know how to process everything. Finally, her kidnapper took her someplace where she could be found.
I got this story from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Although this isn't listed as part of a series, it takes place after events in "Last Day" and "The Shadow Box" with some carryover of characters. Both books were on my TBR, and although this book works fine as a standalone, it might make you take both of those other books off your TBR like I did if you haven't read them yet, only because I feel like I already know the outcome of those stories now. That being said, this is a fairly twisty-but-straightforward thriller that is a fast read, if perhaps lacking a little depth and nuance. I enjoyed the setting of a fancy hotel in Rhode Island during a blizzard (and the hotel is real, and it is already on my hotel bucket list). A famous artist is murdered and her child is missing, but even after that bang of a start to the novel, it didn't really pick up its pace until the midpoint. In my opinion, the character of Hadley (the murdered artist's sister) wasn't strong or interesting enough to carry the novel. I wasn't crazy about the missing child's POV chapters, but I did appreciate the large cast of suspects. Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a digital review copy.
This is the first Luanne Rice book that I have read in a while and it was a great story. When I think of Luanne Rice, I don't think of murder mystery books so this was a great surprise to me. The story kept you guessing all the way through and was wrapped up beautifully. A quick read that keeps your interest from beginning to end.
A murder mystery of tangled clues and suspects. The tentacles of deception course through beautiful and luxurious surroundings described by Ms. Rice as she weaves a tale of family, of relationships, and of art.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One thing I love about Luanne Rice's books is that you lose yourself in them and before you know it, you're done and lost as to what you should do next. This book was no different. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review in advance.
I enjoyed this book but at times it was slow and I was slightly bored. This was to a cozy mystery and an average read. Not sure if I would recommend.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I loved many books by this author in the past but I could not get into this book and I just couldn't finish. It started off really intense but it just went downhill for me after that point. I have no interest in art and there was just too much talk about it for my taste. The overall descriptions of everything was just too much.
I really liked this book, it was different than anything else I've read which was a breath of fresh air. I will be recommending this to my friends, and auto buy this author!
Just a quick cozy murder mystery that is able to be read in one or two sittings. The storyline is great, writing is good and some good twists. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Good to read on a snowy day by the fire. 4 star Thank You NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of the e-arc.
What's better than a murder mystery taking place at the idyllic, legendary Ocean House in Rhode Island? Nothing!! I read Luann Rece's last book and loved it. She did not let me down with the second! The characters are multidimensional, and I felt that they practically jumped off the pages. I will be first in line for Luanne Rice's next book!
Last Night by Luanne Rice is a very entertaining and well written book. Rice has written another fantastic story.
I was fully engaged through the entire read. The characters were well developed, the story line was original and kept my interest.
A wonderfully written crime thriller.
Thank You NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Maddie and CeCe check into the Ocean House. It is a place to start over after Maddie's divorce. Maddie ventures out in the blizzard to meet someone before her sister arrives. But neither Maddie or CeCe comes back. Maddie is found buried in the snow and CeCe is nowhere to be found.
Luanne Rice is a gifted writer. While this story at times was hard to read (when dealing with poor CeCe) I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of it. Just when I thought I knew who was behind Maddie's murder, Luanne would throw another twist in the story and I would be back to square one. The setting was beautiful and left me wanting to visit the Ocean House. I would recommend Last Night to all my book reading friends and will look for more work by Luanne Rice. Special thanks to NetGalley, Luanne Rice, and Thomas & Mercer Publishing for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion. 4 stars for me.

This was my 1st book by Luanne Rice but will not be my last! This book had some great twists and turns and I did not see that last one coming! Which is my fave thing! I also enjoyed all the interconnected relationships in the book, which brings so much more to the story.

Hadley Cooke’s sister, Maddie Morrison, is walking with her daughter, CeCe, during a Blizzard that has come through Rhode Island. When Maddie and CeCe fail to show up at Maddie’s hotel suite, Hadley searches for them and finds Maddie has been shot to death. Where is six-year-old CeCe? How and why has Maddie been killed?
This thriller is exciting from the very first chapter. When a coincidence occurs early on in the story, I begin to doubt the quality of the writing. I am so glad I continued reading because what follows is a well-constructed mystery. Luanne Rice maintains a reader's interest throughout the book. I look forward to reading more of her writing. Thank you, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review LAST NIGHT.
One of my favorite authors wrote a thriller that takes place in one of my favorite places on the East Coast! I was SO excited about this book, and it did not let me down. But then again, I already knew I would love it. There isn't anything Luanne Rice has written that I didn't love! I've been reading her books for over 20 years and have loved them all!
Famous artist Maddie Morrison and her daughter CeCe have moved back to the east coast. Maddie is going through an ugly divorce and needed to get away. They've decided to make the beautiful Ocean House in RI their home. When a blizzard hits and Maddie's body is discovered in the snow, their sanctuary is no more. CeCe was with Maddie, but now she has disappeared without a trace. Hadley, Maddie's sister, was the one to discover the body and with the help of detective Conor Reid and his brother Tom, a Coast Guard commander they must find CeCe and find out what happened to Maddie. What dark secrets was Maddie hiding? Will they be able to find CeCe before it's too late?
This well written book was full of mystery and suspense. It was atomspheric and unputdownable! It had me turning pages to see what would happen next, and I definitely didn't see the ending coming. I loved the plot, I loved the characters and the setting. The author really brought Ocean House to life, and the details were amazing! The blizzard was the icing on the cake. I enjoyed this book SO much and would HIGHLY recommend it.
Thank you to @netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for my complimentary copy!
A blizzard, a mother murdered, and a child missing...a posh hotel and famous artwork. This was a great mystery read! Full of greedy and jealous characters with lots of unexpected connections and twists.
It took a minute to get into but once the investigation began I flew through this! I didn't want to put this down the entire last half and couldn't wait to find out who was to blame.
