I enjoyed this one a good start to a fantasy series. I’m interested to see where the series goes and I need a copy for my shelf
Okay… I liked the beginning, everything was fine. And then the mmc was just starting to piss me off. I really hate the MMC kind of with a passion.
“He’s just a male and can’t be held responsible for his actions. It’s up to you to ensure your relationship remain appropriate” wtf ???
Also bachelor meets hunger games… where???
Such a good book!!!!! I was instantly hooked and could not put it down. I love the FMC Lor and watching her grow as the book continued is such a joy. The world this author is building is so full of political intrigue, secrets and betrayals! Love it!
Beware it is a slow burn but it is turning out to be well worth the wait! Cannot wait to read book 2!
A contest that consists of ten women at each other's throats to win the title of Sun Queen. I was definitely intrigued. Lor is not a fae, she is human. The one human who is chosen and given the chance to become immortal. The book takes off pretty quickly. Lor and her siblings are imprisoned in a camp where the chances of freedom are slim to none. They are constantly fighting for survival. A fight leads Lor into the woods where she is being punished with no food or water for weeks. One day, she hears chaos ensuing in the prison and suddenly in her delirium, gets taken away from her isolated pit. I found the book enjoyable to read…. at first. It is definitely a slow burns as the author pointed out. The reader is just thrown into the mix of things but I had trouble understanding the world. After reading a ton of fae inspired fantasy, I was ready to read a different take but this was the same as pretty much every fae fantasy I’ve read thus far. And this could also be the reason it was a no for me. I’ll have to skip the rest of the series.
I couldn't put down Trial of the Sun Queen! The story follows Lor, who’s spent twelve years under the thumb of the cruel Aurora King. When she’s suddenly freed and thrown into the Sun King’s brutal contest for the title of queen, things get intense. If she wins, she gets her freedom and revenge, but if she loses, she could end up dead—or back with the Aurora King.
This book was a total page-turner. Sure, some parts were a bit predictable, but I was so hooked that it didn’t bother me at all. Lor is a fantastic character, and the stakes are super high throughout. I finished it so quickly that I jumped straight into the second book in the series. If you're into thrilling fantasy with a strong heroine, you’ve gotta check this out!

A Court of Thorns and Roses meets The Fourth Wing in this pulse-pounding, enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance—with fae magic, high-stakes trials, and a dark prince—from Booktok favorite author Nisha J. Tuli.
Ten women. A deadly contest. Only one can win the Sun King’s heart.
While the world building isn’t super vivid or detailed, I enjoyed the elements that were there, from the differentiation of the different realms to the trial structure. I am not a big map person- but it definitely helped. The plot was predictable but I enjoyed the ride nonetheless and can’t wait for book 2!!
Thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
WHAT A WILD RIDE. I was kept on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and if it was a little obvious that we were going to see some Tamlin shenanigans, the cliffhanger indeed had me hanging by my fingertips!
Trial of the Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli had well-developed characters and a plot that was engaging. This book was a great read. I highly recommend!
**Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the e-ARC. All opinions expressed are voluntary and my own.**
This book was like The Hunger Games meets fae romance where a human girl is stolen from the prison she had been living in since she was a child with her two siblings and forced to compete in the grueling trials that are held to find the next Queen of the Sun Kingdom. I enjoyed this book. I thought the pacing was good and the storyline was interesting enough for me to want to continue the series.
Love the series but it’s not a good fit for my shop. I will absolutely recommend it to people who like romantic & adventurous fantasy. The main character is kind of annoying to start, but she grows and changes quite a bit.
Okay I absolutely LOVED this book! It captured my attention right from the very first chapter and kept me glued to my seat the entire time!
This was a really fun fantasy packed with action. Despite the fast pace, I though there was plenty of time for world building and character development. I did think some of the clues were a little obvious but we still have yet to see how they play out through the rest of the series. I was sucked in and can't wait to read the next book.
I wanted to love Trial of the Sun Queen but unfortunately I really struggled with the writing. The plot had a lot of potential, a romantasy with a Bachelor/Hunger Games style competition?? Yes please! But the author relied far too much on telling the reader vs showing. Also The book could have used a lot of editing, there were a lot of repetitive sentences. I’m curious where the series will go, but I’m not sure if I can take much more of the writing style to find out. 2 stars
I keep going between 4 and 4.5 stars. I loved the action scenes of the trials, I loved Lor's character as a whole, but I did have to skim some scenes. The last about 20% of the book and the epilogue did seal it for me that I will continue the series as I am very intrigued by the politics and the mystery surrounding one of the kingdoms and the overall plot and story have sucked me in. The parts I did skim were parts that I could see why Lor behaved the way she did after thinking about it, however in the moment, I wanted more spunk from her in those scenes. Overall highly recommend if you love fantasy with politics, mystery/secrets, trials, and hidden identity. There are approximately 2 more explicit scenes so definitely a New Adult book.
This is my new fantasy addiction. I'm mostly just really mad at myself that it took this long for me to read it. I'm hooked, captivated, and 100% head over heels for this series now. The writing is incredible, and I can't wait to read more!
I LOVED this book!! If you’re a fan of ACOTAR I think you will love this 💕
The book has a very strong FMC which I love, she can take care of herself and you can see Lor’s character development throughout the book.
✨captured FMC
✨unique magic
✨perfect amount of spice 1.5-2 🌶️
✨enemies to lovers
✨found family
I cannot say enough good things about this book!
The world building and tension throughout is perfect 😍 and it keeps going right into book 2.
I have heard nothing but great things about this book series. As I was creating a TBR list for ApollyCon, I was shocked to see that these books were available as "read now"! I instantly downloaded all three in this series.
Ten women. A deadly contest. Only one can win the Sun King's heart.
Lor has endured twelve long years of torment under the Aurora King’s rule. Her only desire is to escape and pay him back for every moment of misery she's endured.
When a surprise release finds her in the hands of the rival Sun King, Lor is thrust into the spotlight as she competes against nine other Tributes for the role of queen. If she wins his heart, she'll earn her freedom and finally get her revenge.
But Lor doesn't belong in the Sun Queen Trials. Not only does she not understand why she was freed, she isn’t a citizen of the Sun King’s court. The other Tributes resent her presence and will stop at nothing to ensure Lor is removed from the competition, permanently.
Now Lor must win, because if she loses, she dies. Or worse, she'll be returned to the evil—and now vengeful—Aurora King.
Five Stars! I absolutely loved this book. It was so gripping, I couldn’t put it down. If you liked the Selection, the Hunger Games, and A Court of Thorns and Roses, I would definitely give this a try. The world building and plot unfolds itself into a rich and compelling story that has you rooting for our main character Lor the entire time. There was not a dull moment, and the ending certainly has me reaching for book 2 immediately.
Trial of the Sun Queen has a slow start. Lor and her two siblings have been prisoners since they were children. Lor is the youngest sibling; she was twelve when imprisoned. Tristan, the oldest, and Lor, the youngest, have endured the most. Lor most of all. They are keeping their family bonds a secret. And Lor has done just about everything to survive. She's thrown into a pit outside, which is a form of solitary confinement when she's taken by the Sun King's court to participate in the Trial of the Sun Queen, which will determine who will be the next queen. Atlas, the Sun King, is interested in Lor from the beginning. She's the final tribute--usually a human from the slums, instead has been pulled from the Aurora Kingdom. Atlas promises Lor if she wins he will bring her "friends" Willow and Tristan to her. If she loses, she will go straight back to prison.
Atlas appears to be kind, and he seems to have an attraction to Lor from the beginning. Her spirit and determination interest him. She shows herself to have queenly characteristics both from the trials she's conquered and their conversations. Atlas also makes it clear that he wants her. Even with all this, I didn't feel the connection between these two like you expect from two main characters in a romantic relationship. Plus there's Nadir, prince of Aurora, who also narrates. His narration had me thinking that Atlas is not a long-lasting love interest in this series.
So even though I rarely seek out spoilers for a book, I've learned that occasionally spoilers do help me. That being said, I decided Trial of the Sun Queen was one I wanted immediate answers to some of my questions. Of course, since only book 2 (out of 4?) is available now, I didn't get too many answers. Just enough to continue moving forward.
Trial of the Sun Queen takes a very sudden turn at the climax of the story. Lor u-turns so suddenly that it feels jarring. I take this as a sign of weak writing. She was full-speed ahead on her course until what seemed like a small thing made her derail completely. It was necessary for the overall story of the series, but I think better writing could have made this feel more natural and less out of the blue. It wasn't a plot twist. I could see it coming, but it didn't feel authentic to the character or the story. It's hard to describe, especially without spoilers.
There are trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. There's sexual assault and trauma--not specifically stated, but implied and discussed in the past tense. There's also physical abuse and trauma. Sexual content is present in the book, as well as quite a lot of language. Add in the random LGBTQ scenes that were brief and unnecessary.
Trial of the Sun Queen reminded me a good bit of The Selection series by Kiera Cass. It wasn't exactly the same, but moments felt very similar. The girls competing to become queen, having these trials, Atlas having to spend time one-on-one with each of the girls, and the jealousy that sparks between the contestants or tributes.
Trial of the Sun Queen kept me interested only after I sought out some spoilers. I immediately picked up book # 2, Rule of the Aurora King. I didn't buy the relationship between Atlas and Lor exactly. Their interactions always fell short of what they should have in a way that's hard to describe. Plus Nadir's narrations indicated a piece of the puzzle still to come. Lor has bitterness towards just about everyone because she suffered for no reason, and either they didn't suffer, or they didn't stop her suffering. Illogical if you ask me. Trial of the Sun Queen gets 3 Stars. Have you read Trial of the Sun Queen? What did you think? Let me know!
A very fun twist on the current romantasy genre that has taken over lately! It was so fun getting to know Lor, and seeing her figure her way through the Sun Queen Trials. I will say there was a little bit of a pacing issue, but it wasn't any thing major that detracted from the story too much.
