I have to admit that I wasn't sure about a new series by this author. After all, the Kane and Alton series has been going for a while and is addictive as all get out. However, Beth Katz is an amazing character and this book is thrilling and just fabulous!!! I honestly cannot wait to read the next one :)

Beth has a serial killer father but she works on the right side of the law - mostly. She is used to working alone, as is her new partner Dax, but somehow these two need to learn to work together. Trying to hide her true nature from Dax might be a problem as well since Beth is determined to bring her own brand of justice to the worst of the worst.

I don't want to give anything away but this is an expertly crafted book that will keep you reading long into the night! I love that there is crossover with the Kane and Alton series as well - it works very well indeed.

5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

TRIGGER WARNING: child rape and murder, drug abuse, sexual slavery
Agent Beth Katz is dedicated to her FBI career, determined to help and protect others. Her methods are unorthodox as she uses her skills to kill the perpetrators where possible. She is the daughter of a serial killer and has inherited the intelligence and danger which allows her to avenge victims. Now she is on the trail of a killer but can she hide her real self from her new partner...?
Dark Angel is the first book in a new series. The second book Shadow Angel is also available now. I have previously read, enjoyed and reviewed many of D.K. Hood's Kane and Alton series (use the search box to find them!)
Wow, I love Beth's character. She is scary, but only if you are a killer yourself. She is fearless in her ruthless disposal of the monsters that stalk the innocent. Her deadly skills are only used against those who deserve it. After a particularly traumatic incident, Beth has been sent to a new location and given a new partner and crimes to solve.
I did have to suspend my credulity a few times as Beth and Dax get into some dangerous situations and barely escape with their lives. Some of the content is quite graphic especially with regard to the paedophile ring, however I also felt that there was a detachment when older victims are discovered.
Most of the book is written to show Beth and Dax's perspective but we do have some chapters that show the killer (dubbed the Pied Piper by the FBI but the Warlock to him and his victims). I felt that I wanted more chapters about the killer to better understand and witness his actions.
Dark Angel isn't particularly fast paced as it seeks to introduce us to Beth but there are some action packed moments in this tense crime thriller. A great start to a new series!

Beth Katz is a vigilante FBI agent who is moved to Rattlesnake Creek to help find a killer abducting girls and killing them. Her and her partner Dax Styles use unconventional means to get their killers. This was a very exciting read and the first in a series. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC that will be published in September 2023!

This is the first book I’ve read by this author but I’ve heard such good things about her work I just had to request to read and review the first two books in this series, they sound SO good don’t they?.

Beth Katz is an FBI Agent and also a psychopathic serial killer BUT she only kills people who deserve it, after witnessing her mothers horrific murder something changed and she wanted justice and justice for all those those people who never got it but deserve it, vigilante style.

When the results a of psych report has Beth shipped out to Rattlesnake Creek in Montana to work with a maverick new partner called Dax, what could possibly go wrong?.

Wow and just wow! What an astonishing book this was, jt had me gripped.
I’ve never read a book quite like it before. Beth is such a fascinating character, she keeps her psychopathic tendencies under check and she acts/reacts in the right way during certain situations but she has to think about what I normal person would do, she never lets her true personality out because if she does it will be her downfall.

The case was so good too, I never guessed who the perpetrator was, I was blindsided!

I adored Beth’s new partner Dax, I’ve got a feeling he’s hiding a few secrets that I hope we get to know more about in the next book.

I’m immediately starting the second book as I finish writing this review.

What a great start to a new series. I felt a familiarity as I started to read this one. Not sure if it was the writing, if it was Beth being introduced in the Kane and Alton books or if just reminded me of something, but I felt instantly connected with her. And honestly I couldn’t decide whether she is good or bad with her vigilante justice. Ridding the world of the scum of the earth, but without an investigation and trial. This cat and mouse that the author sets up with her and her partner Dax is quite intriguing. Chapters from both main characters POVs added to my interest.

Both Beth and Dax are strong and independent, which makes their partnership of interest, and they do complement each other as they work together on the case, whether they believe or realize it. They are searching for someone taking pairs of girls. And while the case it straightforward, I was interested in to watch the pair work together and see how Beth would handle her urges with a partner.

Excellent new series. I've read the Josie Quinn series and loved it and wasn't sure about how I'd like this series. It's great. Pulled me in and I can't wait to read next book. Definitely recommend to everyone. Grab it and curl up you headed for a great read.

Holy cow this is a great way to start a series. It is perfectly rolled over from the Kane and Alton series. The plot is very unique and interesting, without being over the top. I absolutely love her new partner Dax Styles. I look forward to watching their partnership grow and see how she keeps dark half hidden from him. Can't wait for the next one!

So I am a huge fan of Hoods Black Rock Series so was reeling when I saw that a new series was in the offering and I am invested!

I read book one and two in one go and WOW I devoured them, Beth is a dark, twisted character an FBI vigilante with her own style of justice.

Some familiar characters appeared in this series and I remember the Tarot Killer popped up in Black Rock too!

I'm excited to see the development of this series

Review for 'Dark Angel' by DK Hood.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 12th September 2023.

This is the ninth book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'Detective Beth Katz' series. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book 12 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Fallen Angel' (book 13 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Don't Look Back (book 13.5 in the series), ' Pray For Mercy '(book 14 in the Detective Kane and Alton series), 'Kiss Her Goodnight' (book 15 in the Detective Kane and Alton series ) 'Her Bleeding Heart' (book 16 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) 'Chase Her Shadow' (book 17 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) and 'Their Wicked Games' (book 19 in the Detective Kane and Alton series) and I would highly recommend them all.

This novel consists of a Introduction, 48 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!

Well, Well, Well!!!! Firstly, I must admit that being a humongous fan of the amazing D.K Hood's Detective Kane and Alton series I was a bit dubious when I realised this was a start of a brand new series. I mean, for starters how on Earth is she going to match the amazingness of Kane, Alton and the rest of the gang? How could she make another series just as good or even better that the Detective Kane and Alton books? Well ladies and gentlemen I haven't got a clue how this queen of crime does it but by God she absolutely smashed it out of the water and I fell in love!!!! Don't get me wrong I did miss some of the amazing characters from the Detective Kane and Alton series but all was not lost!!! The absolutely incredible DK Hood knows her fans so well and knew that we would be having withdrawals from them so she makes sure that this cracking series not only includes Rattlesnake Creek but we also have a crossover of some of the fantabulous characters!!! Who I hear you ask? Well, you'll have to give this series a try to find out won't you?? Needless to say you won't be disappointed and I was absolutely landed myself!!!!!

This is yet another book and series that is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! Even with nineteen amazing books in the Kane and Alton action packed series she is still coming up with unique and action packed storylines and another whole series that absolutely grip the reader immediately from page one to the very end!!! Hood's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensured the descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself feeling the fear running through me and the hairs on my arms raise. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! I absolutely loved all the crossovers from the Kane and Alton books from cases to characters to locations but one of the best things I loved about this book is our main protagonist Beth who has her own dark secrets that she must keep hidden from the rest of the characters!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!! This book really will have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails and even covering your eyes at times!!!! Oh and did I mention the bombshell, jaw dropping and explosive twists and turns throughout??? Well I am gobsmacked that.....
Ooops I can't tell you!!! That would just be spoiling it wouldn't it? So if you want to know what the twist is, who the killer is, why they are killing and much, MUCH more you will just have to grab your copy of this epic thriller today!!!! Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline, LOVE this series and LOVE this amazing author!!!. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! LD.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which has absolutely shines through the Kane and Alton series along with this one which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is one of the best series I have ever read!!

This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Lauryn Allman who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Lauryn did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by D.K Hood but also to listening to more books narrated by Lauryn! I have previously listened to 'The Niece' by Georgina Cross that Lauryn also narrated and did an amazing job with that book too and I would also recommend reading or listening to it.

Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!

It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.

I absolutely LOVED meeting and getting to know all the new characters in this book along with meeting some of the amazing characters from her Kane and Alton series again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. The characters very quickly became like friends to me I feel like I have got to know them so well and so quickly with the new characters and I absolutely LOVE Beth!!!! She is such a dark horse and a dark angel which makes the title for this book perfectly. She reminded me very much of Dexter from the book and TV series. If you are a fan of Dexter then you will love Beth!!! In regards to the previous crossover characters (who I won't name as I don't want to spoil the fun) every time I meet them again I am landed and every time I have to say Goodbye I am gutted I have to wait to greet them again. I cannot wait to meet Beth and Dax again. I really enjoyed seeing how the dynamics of this new team were going to go and the power struggle between Beth and Dax was definitely intriguing to "see" play out. I absolutely adore the fact that Dax has a dog called Bear as that is one of the other things I loved about the Kane and Alton series and that is Duke and Zorro (dogs) played such large parts. I am a massive animal lover and even run my own cat rescue called Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice so any animals playing main parts in books are always a huge bonus for me!! DK Hoods fantastic evocative writing skills and Lauryn's amazing narrative skills really bring all these characters off the pages and into real life and I just loved getting to meet them all!!! Anyway, before this turns into too long an essay I will wrap it up by saying I cannot wait to meet all these characters and more again in the second book in this amazing new series which is called 'Shadow Angel' which I am actually off to read now!!!

Congratulations D.K Hood on yet ANOTHER HUMONGOUS success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂

This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the Introduction, Prologue and first 2 chapters of D.K Hood's 'Shadow Angel' which is the second book in this series and promises to be just as addictive as this book!!! I am actually off to read that next so keep your eyes peeled for my review of it coming soon!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night. An absolutely explosive start to what is guaranteed to be an epic new series by the amazing D.K Hood

361 pages/ 10 hours 4 minutes.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited, £20.03 for the Audiobook, £7.99 with Audible and £8.99 in paperback via Amazon at time of review, which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

This tour is slightly different in that I’m reviewing two books at once. After reading them though, I can’t do them justice in just one review so I’ll review each book separately. Thanks to Bookouture for my spot on the tour and for the copy of each book in exchange for my honest review.

What a position to be in! You’re a psychopath who excels at murdering the most evil people, and also the FBI agent who investigates and chases them for a job. I will admit I was getting some Dexter vibes but that’s really a compliment. Dexter was amazing, and these books are amazing too.

Set in the beautiful backdrop of mountainous Montana, the author told such a vivid story that I could visualise the scenes and imagine the locations. Anyone who reads my reviews will know I love that.

Now I know Beth is a murderer, and her ethics are all messed up by her psychopathy and family history, but... I actually liked her straight away as she dished out her personal justice in the guise of the “Tarot Killer”. Her new partner on arrival in Montana, Dax Styles, is a realist and bends the letter of the law when dealing with local problems in isolation. He’s also a likeable character.

Overall, I think this series will fly, and am happy to recommend it to any thriller reader, and as a great introduction to the authors other books. I gave Dark Angel, by D. K. Hood, five stars.

Beth is reassigned after she is ordered to take a psych test, however, her new assignment and partner may complement her in other ways.

Soon two girls are missing and while one is found dead the other is still missing, Beth has seen this before and she needs to find the killer before they strike again.

This was a page-turning read, which had great characters I couldn't get enough of. Some of which crossed over from D.K.Hood's other novels with Kane and Alton; which is also a fantastic read.

I loved this dark main character who stepped over boundaries and look forward to the next novel in this series.

Dark Angel, what a brilliant start to the Special Agent Katz series!

Beth Katz FBI had a serial killer for a father and has a psychopathic urge herself to bring justice to the world by murdering serial killers.

Having been moved from the city to isolated mountain country in Montana, it made it difficult for Katz to mete out her form of justice as the 'Tarot Killer'.

I liked Katz and her new partner Dax Styles. Both having a fierce sense of justice and an original way of handling violence. They are a great team, even if they don't know it yet.

It's well paced, exciting and it was so easy to become invested into the story.

I devoured this book in one sitting and can't wait to start book two Shadow Angel.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just felt it was very slow. Some people love a slow burner book but it’s not for me sadly. That aside, I did enjoy the story line. The characters had an in depth description as did the events to the point I could imagine watching it as a BBC/Netflix style crime drama. I would like to give some of her other books a try too.

The first in a series about FBI agent Beth . After a child preditor is killed during an attack, Beth is forced to have a psychological assessment and was moved to partner another agent in the wilds of Montana . She prefers to work alone and does not always share information with her partner. In Montana, there have been a series of child murders where the victims have been sexually abused. With lots of action and helicopter flights, Beth and her partner work out how the perpetrator is working and it is quite horrific.
Beth and her new partner, Styles both have a past and both have their own secrets and are wary of each other to start off with . I like the action and the investigation. Not sure about Beth's other "side "though it does make for interesting reading and adds an extra dimension to this thriller . I will look out for more in this series
Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review

Wow! What a start to a brand-new series by D.K. Hood. Detective Beth Katz is great, I loved her and her sidekick, Dax Styles. We have recently visited Montana, so the mentions of bears and elk, and the scenery, had me invested from the beginning.

Hood brought me right into the heart of the story with her writing, describing scenes in such detail I could almost smell the metallic tang of the blood and the yummy smells of TJ’s diner.

Beth has her own unique way of dealing with serial killers, but you’ll have to read Dark Angel to discover just what that is and what happened in her tragic past.

There are lots of trigger warnings so check these out before you buy the book, but as long as you’re ok with them all and you enjoy an FBI police procedural with a difference, then I’d highly recommend Dark Angel.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review Dark Angel by D.K. Hood.

Oh my!!!! Beth Katz is most definitely a Dark Angel. Oh wow! If you’ve read the Kane and Alton series, you need to put aside their clean cut images that Hood has created as Beth Katz is dark!

She’s FBI so you’d think she’d be on the right side of the law, catching the criminals so the victims can receive justice… but Beth’s justice is akin to that of Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter. She deals out her own level of justice. But is this nature or nurture?!? I’m interested to find out more in that respect!

Beth’s new partner is an interesting one. He comes across as rather by-the-book kind of guy to start with but as I got to know him, there was more to him which might make him the perfect partner for our Beth. Whilst I’m on the subject of supporting cast, I LOVE THE CROSSOVER!!!!! Yes characters from the Kane and Alton series make an appearance in Dark Angel and I love it!

I’ve got to say D. K. Hood has started her new series with a bang. I loved Dark Angel and can not wait to read Shadow Angel.

"Dark Angel" by D.K. Hood, the first book in the Detective Beth Katz series, is a gripping and unputdownable FBI agent crime thriller. The narrative revolves around Beth Katz, an FBI agent with a dark past and a hidden knack for understanding serial killers, thanks to her own father's haunting legacy. Partnered with Dax Styles, they uncover a chilling case of missing girls and a twisted serial killer dubbed the Pied Piper. Hood's writing keeps you on the edge with its suspenseful twists and turns, making it a must-read for thriller enthusiasts. The new characters and captivating storyline immediately drew me in, solidifying this book as a promising start to an exciting series.

Dark Angel delivered a riveting tale about FBI agent Beth Katz. Beth is not your typical FBI agent. The daughter of a serial killer, who works closely with investigations of notorious killers. She makes use of the dark web to aid in her hunt for these killers, who she plans to take down by any means necessary.

The story begins with Beth taking down a predator, and from that moment the reader learns that she is the infamous “Tarot Killer” who is always one step ahead of law enforcement. Now after this successful take down, her superiors, thinking she lacked empathy, ordered her to take a psych test. Failure of the test led to her reassignment to Rattlesnake Creek, a small mining town. While there, she will be working with Senior Special Agent Dax Styles, a former ex army military police.

As expected, Beth wasn't keen on her re-assignment. She felt it would hamper her in meting out justice, However, on her arrival to Rattlesnake Creek she got caught up in a case involving a paedophile which law enforcement dubbed the Pied Piper.

Beth is determined to catch the killer by any means necessary. Her unconventional methods and her penchant for taking risky steps amazed Dax. Although he sometimes breaks the rules while conducting investigations, he never goes to the length that Beth does. Despite not agreeing with, most of her methods, they worked together like a well oiled machine.

Dark Angel is indeed a page turning read, which featured interesting characters and well paced plot. Be prepared for a suspenseful journey and having difficulty putting this book down. The villain's end was quite fitting. I couldn't have planned it any better.

Overall, Dark Angel is a great start to the series. I look forward to more from this team and can't wait to see if Beth's dark side will lose control.
