One of the most suspenseful, breakneck speed reads ever! This one dives into some gritty characters. Some hard topics. And it takes you deep into a crazy, terrifying plot so twisted your imagination can’t possibly fathom what’s to come. Absolute heart racing terror. Characters I immediately loved. A town so well written you feel like you’ve been there. I read this in one sitting, it was too good to put down. I am already anxious to read the next instalment. Bloody brilliant!
DK Hoods Black Rock Falls series is one of my favourite police procedural series out there right now. So when ai hear she was writing a spin off series with FBI agent Beth Katz, I was intrigued. Dark Angel is the first book with Beth in the lead and what a cracker of a book it is.
Beth is the daughter of a serial killer, and a vigilante FBI agent who wants real justice for the victims. She works very hard to keep her dark side hidden, but now she has been sent to Rattlesnake Creel and must work with a partner. This is going to be tricky.
Beth is a badass and does not hold back what she is thinking. She also does like to stay within the law in her quest to stop the serial killers. As always, this author keeps you on your toes, always second guessing what you think you know
I look forward to book 2 and learning more about her dark heart.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advanced copy of both the kindle and audiobook book to read. Publishes on September 12th
Absolutely brilliant a fantastic book to start a new series, I loved it from the beginning, can’t wait to read book 2 when it comes out
I'm still new to this author and really loving her work. This is the beginning to a new series with a fabulous new character. Might take me a while to decide if I love her or love to hate her. Beth is an angel of vengence or perhaps the devil in disguise. Is she doing the right thing....with the horrific crimes it seemed that she was.
After a crime Beth's psyche test had her being moved away. Could she hide her true character in a small town? These small towns were a law unto themselves, a whole different lifestyle with rough neck miners. Her new partner seems like a good fit though he might be surprised.
Such a great start for a new series and omg the ending...omg don't be eating!
Wow, wow, wow! What a thrill ride this book is…fantastic new characters, a well thought out and fast paced thriller…twists and turns like no other…and the ending!! EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!! I love that there are several ties to the Kane and Alton series…and that the Tarot Killer makes another appearance…I can’t say enough good things about this book!!

Dark Angel is the first book in the new Detective Beth Katz series by D.K. Hood and I absolutely loved it! There was so much to love about this book...the characters, the storyline, the crime solving, the character backstories, just everything!
This is one of those books that I just devoured. I read it all in one day because I was so invested. I needed to know how things were going to work out.
I found Beth to be absolutely captivating! What an amazing angle to bring to the FBI world! I can't wait to see what's to come. I need the next book to be published! I wasn't ready for this one to be over!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
FBI Agent Beth Katz loves her job chasing down serial killers but she's keeping a huge secret from her employers. After stopping a paedophile in the process of abducting a child Katz is reassigned to Rattlesnake Creek - a remote area of Montana. There she is partnered with Agent Dax Styles - a former MP in the military. When two young girls are reported missing they realise that a serial offender called the Pied Piper is in the area. Katz struggles to hide her true self when working closely Styles as they hunt down the killer.
This is the first in a new series by D K Hood, author of the Alton & Kane series and some of the characters crossover. Really good read - look forward to book 2.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
When I heard that DK Hood was writing a new series, I thought that it would be the beginning of the end for the Blackrock books but this doesn’t seem to be the case just yet, it took me a while to settle down into this story and once it did , I began to enjoy the the power struggle between Beth and Dax and the inclusion of characters from the other books, I think a meeting between Beth and Jo could be interesting as one is hiding her true self and the other is trained to see beyond what the rest of us do. As I’ve said this is slightly different from the other books but just as enjoyable.
Wow a new Series of books from D K Hood. Two new FBI agents, one with a twist, and also mixing with some of the Black Rock Falls gang in the Kane and Alton series. Thank you to netgalley for letting me read a early copy of this book. I absolutely loved it. I love this author and have read all her books, they are all amazing.
Beth Katz isn't your run of the mill law enforcement operative. A dedicated, and confident FBI agent she's also a ruthless psychopath targeting those she identifies as unlikely to receive the punishment befitting their crimes unless she dispenses it herself. Unwillingly transferred from Helena to the town of Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, Beth isn't sure how she'll manage to control her inner darkness in the small settlements, endless forests, and the isolated town she suddenly calls home.
A cybercrime specialist used to working alone Beth now has a partner, ex-army maverick, Senior Special Agent Dax Styles, and he even has a dog! As they begin to get acquainted two little girls go missing from home and they put everything else aside as it becomes clear others youngsters have disappeared in a similar manner never to be seen again. Realising the dense forests mean she can slip away and continue her own brand of law enforcement gives Beth renewed focus but the mountains are a totally new environment for her, so could she end up needing all the help she can get?
After twenty Detectives Kane and Alton novels and two novellas, the brilliant D K Hood has two new main protagonists and they, and the location, are reassuringly familiar but also noticeably different. I struggled at the beginning, set in Helena, but the storyline improved immediately Beth arrived in Rattlesnake Creek, and I was hooked. The continued references throughout to Beth's need to dish out her own type of justice seemed unnecessary after a while but I imagine, in the same way that Kane and Alton's past is always mentioned, this will have less of an impact as more books are published. I also have to admit I wasn't sure initially about no Jenna or Dave but the familiar presence of M.E. Shane Wolfe and his staff were a welcome nod to one of my favourite not so cosy crime series.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. This bodes well for another successful series set in Montana's murder central and I know I won't be the only one definitely along for the bumpy ride!
This is a page turner. The protagonist goes after serial killers. Although she is in law enforcement, she doesn’t always stick to protocol. This is a different take on a mystery y a talented author. These characters keep the story moving quickly. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review.
Dark angel series has completely lost me in its stories, a page turner… absolutely absorbing me… compelling, page-turning… will keep you up late at night top marks! Can’t wait for more to come…..
Beth Katz is the daughter of a serial killer, which makes her a perfect fit for the FBI, and as a vigilante she hunts down psychopaths and murderers.
After an opening in which we see Agent Katz's skills in dealing with a dangerous serial killer but apparently not to the liking of her superiors and after a psychological evaluation that shows some empathy problems, Katz is assigned to a position in Rattlesnake Creek.
In this first book of the series we begin to get to know Beth Katz, how her mind works, her moral compass and how she tries to control her instincts. She is partnered with Special Agent Dax Styles who is extremely perceptive which makes him perfect for the job but also poses a danger to her.
It is a book that is easy to read because it has no dead moments, the characters are always in action, there is always something going on and of course it always has us on edge thinking about the risk that Agent Katz runs of being discovered in her most personal side.
In short, it is a book that hooks you with a fast-paced plot with charismatic characters and if you are a fan of Dexter I am sure you will love it. I for one am looking forward to reading more of the series.
Great book and series! This author has become a automatic one click wonder for me! Lol I'm loving this authors writing and style! These books are hard core! They have a bit of everything! They have high suspense, intrigue, action packed, gruesome murders, serial killers, great who done it and some really crazy twists and turns! The storyline is so very interesting and has kept me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book and series! They're well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me! Big thank you to D.K. Hood for your amazing words! I'm loving your books! Thank you!
D. K. Hood has a new series that is explosive! FBI Beth Katz is a force to be reckoned with and walks a fine line between vigilante and lawful pursuit of justice to rid the country of corruption. Her partner FBI Styles is curious and suspicious at times of her lack of empathy and her knowledge and understanding of psychopathic behavior. Beth must constantly be on guard to keep him from getting too close to see the darkness she hides. As Beth works a child abduction case with Agent Styles, she is hampered by rules and regulations until she can take it no longer! This is a good book and hard to set aside!
This is a new author for me and she hits another home run on this book. Young girls are disappearing in pairs, one is murdered and the other is never found. This is a page turner you won’t be able to put down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
A new series by this amazing author I love and yes, she convinced me again.
When an author starts a new series, it often means the end for the previous one and for a minute I was afraid this would be the case here too. You cannot imagine how happy I was when I realised it's not like this here. I am so not ready to say goodbye to Kane and Jenna.
But about this book now.
Killing is never a good thing, but I can see where Beth is coming from. She believes strongly she makes the world a better place and honestly I kind of agree with her.
Beth is very good in tracking down psychopathic serial killers. She knows how their mind works and she has it first hand.. The only difference is that she can control herself and never takes down an innocent person, but only the baddest of the baddies.
I love the link the author crates between this series and her other very successful one, connecting with some of the characters.
I like Beth. I like the way she puts herself in danger to save others and I love the way she can come up with explanations in order to not attract the attention. Her partner Styles is also not always coloring between the lines and they make a good team, although Beth always takes it a few steps further.
A great start to an, what I believe, is going to be another amazing series. 5 stars
Thank you
D.K Hood Coming out with a new Detective?! Gimme, gimme, gimme!!! Expectations were high, and this makes me a bit uneasy, because what if the book and the new detective are not to my liking... Fear not, this was an excellent read, and Detective Beth Katz is just fabulous.
Beth is the perfect flawed Detective. She is determined, takes things a bit too far, she's bold, and she gets results. Great, right? Did I forget to tell you she's a serial killer? She works for the FBI and she kills men she thinks deserve to die. Then she gets transferred to Montana. Serial killer center.
Love the premises, love the plot, love everything about this book! It could not have been a better start to my new relationship with a new series. How does D.K. do it? I have no clue. She spits out books like I don't know what. My theory is that she been held a prisoner in Nowhere Montana. She will only get food and water once she has written enough pages. she has to write basically every moment she's awake. This is just a guess. But just think about it. She seems to have so much insight into the minds of all these criminals in Montana?
Every reader who loves detective stories, this is one not to be missed. Loved it, and I am completely hooked!
From bestselling author DK Hood (Detectives Kane & Alton, 20 books and counting) comes a brand new series, featuring a unique main character - one who you will not soon forget.
Meet Special Agent Beth Katz of the FBI - a cybercrime expert and undercover agent who hunts the worst of the worst: serial killers, rapists, pedophiles, human traffickers….vowing to rid her world of these psychopaths.
But Katz is no stranger to murder: she’s the daughter of a serial killer whose crimes made a deep impression on her character and inform her every move as exemplified by this internal monologue:
“No, the psychopaths in her sights had a high intelligence, murdered frequently, and planned ahead. They hid their secrets well and took dangerous to a new level. They were a worthy challenge.”
Agent Katz has a dark side, that she must hide from everyone.
In the opening chapters of “Dark Angel”, Agent Katz, she is on the hunt for a serial killer, who’s grabbed his latest prey right from the girl’s school. After a hair-raising chase Beth catches up to the killer, with the intention of ending his reign of terror and rescue the girl. After calling in to her team that she’s got him, Katz finds him dying - throat slit, bleeding out - but the girl is safe. It also appears that the Tarot Killer (who we were introduced to The Tarot Killer in the Kane & Alton thriller “Her Bleeding Heart“) has struck again, and rid the world of another psychopath; all the little girl can say is that an ‘angel’ rescued her.
Given the intensity of the case, and the fact that Agent Katz was seen to be actually trying to stem the tide of blood from the kidnapper’s slit throat, she is given a psych evaluation, and it’s noted that she has a problem with empathy. (Little do they know!)
As a result, Agent Beth Katz is reassigned to an FBI outpost called Rattlesnake Creek, where she will partner with ex-military Special Agent Dax Styles will oversee a number of small towns as well as deal with rowdy miners on booze-fuelled weekends. In a more intimate setting, Beth will have to work extra hard to keep her ‘dark side’ hidden from her partner, resulting in a seemingly constant tension. But, they do work well together.
The first case that Beth and Dax end up with is a kidnapper/child killer called The Pied Piper - he lures pairs of young girls into his clutches, leaving one brutally murdered and one seemingly vanished forever. Having struck in other areas of the country, it seems that the Pied Piper is now operating in their area, and they swear to bring him down as quickly as possible.
We get deep into the investigation, and witness the lengths that Beth Katz will go to in order to stop this and other psychos.
Anyone familiar with the Kane & Alton investigations will recognize some of the players in this one: Dr. Shane Wolfe, his daughter Emily and his assistant Colt show up as part of the forensic team assigned to the case(s), and the close proximity of Rattlesnake Creek to both Black Rock Falls and Jo Wells’ outpost in Snakeskin Gully means that there will be more character interactions in future books. (I cannot wait to see what Jo Wells thinks of Beth Katz….)
I read this one in one, nail-biting session. Five-Star Suspense. Recommended.
