Wowsers this series is dark. The killings in this one were so dark and made me cringe and shiver. It’s like my worst nightmare and reminds me of a few different horror films.
Beth really comes into her own in this book. I have no idea how this series will all pan out but with what we know about her it isn’t going to be good. But that makes it so exciting and so fresh! It’s not the same formulaic series, it’s exciting, fresh and so tense. We are just waiting for the fallout to happen.
Two different storylines occur, but it was nice to have one wrapped up before we tackled the next one, but those final phrases in the epilogue, Sheesh kebab! Things have just stepped up a notch!
This series is really unlike I have ever read and it is so far from the Kane and Alton series. Here Ms Hood goes dark, so dark. It’s like she goes further than she can in black rock falls.
What a great merging of two series too, some fan favourites show up in this book and you can see the noose will get tighter as the series progresses. I am already panicking!!
Just another book knocked right out of the park. Now to catch up on Book 3!
This is the second book in the series featuring FBI Agent Beth Katz. She is settling down to her life in Rattlesnake Creek and workding with her partner Agent Dax Styles. Unbeknown to everyone Beth has been hunting down serial killers and because she leaves a tarot card on their bodies they are now hunting for the Tarot Card killer. A young local girl, Cassie, who works a as a stripper, is reported missing and her body is found a few days later. She had had makeup applied and was stitched to a sofa in a remote abandoned cabin. The local sheriff has to call in Beth and Dax to investigate. When another young woman is found murdered in the same way they know there is a serial killer on the loose. Beth realises that she is going to have to go undercover as a pole dancer to try and trap the killer and put her own life at risk. This was another brilliant read in a gripping series, I am completely addicted.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book,
This is book number 2 in the series. I especially loved the banter between the characters in this book. The tension was high and the pacing was perfect. I couldnt stop turning the pages.
Great read
Second in the Detective Beth Katz series
And another that didn’t disappoint
Can’t wait for the next in this series
Thanks NetGalley
The second book in the new series detailing the strong woman detective Beth Katz. If you haven't read the first in the series it was amazing.
Beth Katz is a well designed character and I really enjoy reading about her and her new home. She is strong and independent which is great but also has some really bad qualities as well showing her as a complete person.
While this series may never take the place in my heart of Alton and Kane it is very strong and has so many positives to it.
There are references back to the other series but it feels like it's more in passing than an actual full link. This makes it easier to handle at the same time as you feel a closeness with the books and yet also a distance.
I think what I like the most is the style of this book. It has the serial killer as the good guy vibes which is great as you don't know who the good guys are for part of this. Vigilante justice can be very entertaining to read about especially when the person doing it is a cop. For me that is one thing I really like as it shows the anti-hero which is attractive to read about.
In some ways Beth seems like a shadow of a person as she has two sides to herself. The FBI officer who is helpful and the avenging dark Angel.
I always have high hopes for a new series and this one never disappoints especially when old favourites pop in to help with the cases. The tie in to the authors original series is what helps to make these characters stand out more than they already do.
The premise of this series has really drawn me in and I find that the intrigue of this series makes it even better especially as anticipation for what is to come is very attractive.
I received both DK Hood - Beth Katz books and they were both great! Another really good detective novel that follows Katz and her partner wheb they discover another murder. Who is doing these to these women?? Thank you so much NetGalley, book picture and DK Hood for allowing me to read these books before their releases!!
Shadow Angel is book 2 in the Detective Katz series by D.K. Hood. I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Detective Katz and Styles are investigating a serial killer who is killing exotic dancers slowly after he takes them. He takes them to a deserted mining cabin in the woods and takes his time killing them. After he kills them, he sews them into the sofa, puts heavy makeup on them, brushes their hair, and poses them to greet him as he enters each day. They stink terribly of death by the time they are discovered. Who could be doing this and why?
It takes a real nutcase to do what this killer is doing!
As the body count continues to rise and more women are found in the same hideous fashion, a famous profiler and her partner come to town to help Katz and Styles. Katz is afraid that the profiler will see right through her and know that she is a serial killer. Katz is the Tarot Card killer that goes around killing the worst serial killers out there. No one can know that she is the Tarot Card killer and it's getting harder and harder to have an alibi with Styles so close. Katz and Styles both have an apartment above their working quarters at the FBI office. Because of this, Katz decides to buy a cabin in the woods for some get away time. She's going to use it as an artist retreat when they have time off, but she'll really be hunting the next hideous killer to take down.
Leading a double life as an FBI agent and a vigilante serial killer is tough for Katz, but she loves doing both. Can she keep it up without anyone discovering the truth? Will Styles get too close and start to figure things out? Will Katz and Styles be able to catch the serial killer before more bodies are found? As Katz tracks down the next person to kill she is in danger. The serial killer is big and strong and Katz fears this could be it. Will she be able to kill him and leave her calling card, the tarot card? He's killed at least 20 women and she must stop him. I couldn't stop reading this book and was up until 3:45 in the morning finishing it. I rate Shadow Angel 5 stars with my highest recommendation. Get comfortable, get a cup of coffee, and enjoy this fantastic book! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Shadow Angel in exchange for a fair review. #ShadowAngel
This is a review for both the two initial novels in this series
I usually like DK Hood novels and had high expectations for this new series as there was a sort of Dexter echo in the blurb.
I enjoyed this thriller as it's fast paced and well plotted. Beth is a flawed charachter on the grey moral spectrum, a sort of vigilante.
The plot kept me hooked and guessing and it's fast paced.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
INTRIGUING police procedural featuring a very interesting lead detective with a totally different approach to her crime protagonists. RECOMMEND totally for a very unusual read. RECOMMEND highly this & all of this authors' great novels. Thanks to #NetGalley#Bookouture for #ShadowAngel in return for my honest review.
What's more difficult than creating a smashing first book of a series? Making the next one as much, if not, more engaging than the previous one. In this story, agent Beth Katz has already been following a series of murders of young women, sometimes even children, in neighboring cities and is pretty sure she knows who the killer is. But he cannot be stopped by the law as he had been prosecuted for the same crime once and had been exonerated from it. Kantz has plans already in place to find and stop him. But just then, a body of a young woman is found in an abandoned cabin, in an unusual state, with the eyes and mouth stitched open in a smile.
Special agent Beth Kantz and her partner Dax Styles follow the clues to one of the strip clubs that operate around that area. When another woman working in another strip club goes missing and is found dead, Kantz goes undercover to find the identity of the murderer before he adds up to his list of victims. The urgency is only amplified when they discover that there may be more bodies in many more cabins.
Will Kantz be able to save herself from this twisted killer? Who is murdering these women in such a horrific manner? Does she stop the other killer who is already in her sights?
Author Hood has given Kantz a great character arch. We can see Kantz opening up more to the people around her in the small town and also to her partner Styles. She is learning to trust other people and is even willing to bring perpetrators under the law more than she used to. The ideologies and principles of Styles are beginning to rub off on her and the readers are able to see the subtle changes in her persona because of it.
The twisted cabin case will satisfy the appetite of readers who love to read macabre stuff and the final fight scene imparts a great culmination to the twisted story. It's still not clear if the author is aiming for a romance between Kantz and Styles, I don't really want that to happen, but I wouldn't mind of a great friendship based on mutual trust and respect develops between the two. May be that will help Kantz overcome the demons in her bit by bit.
I can't wait to see where the story goes next and if it can continue to hold my attention.
Vigilante by night, FBI agent by day Beth Katz has been partnered with maverick agent Dax Styles. In a remote part of Montana someone is murdering young women and leaving them in macabre poses to be found. There are several suspects but can any of these seemingly hard working men be a sick serial killer. I love the dynamic between the two agents, they are friends and partners but there is no romance. They both have too many secrets to allow anyone that close. This is book 2 in a new series but it could be read as a standalone. However I would advise that Dark Angel is read first so you can really get a read on the characters.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book
The second book in the series and Beth and Dax find another body to start the case. Here Beth begins to work alongside Dax still not wanting to give away her secret she finds a place to live that is a little away but still has just enough people to see her come and go. As they investigate the crime the poor girl is dead but has makeup on and is positioned to almost make her look alive until you get close. Beth now knows that she must find this person and the only way is through the dark web. Will she kill the person or actually bring him in? A very good story and I am hooked with these characters.
Book two was phenomenal! I love a serial killer book but add a serial killer killing serial killers and I’m hooked. The very idea that they can recognize each other is so much fun. Beth is my new hero! Five huge stars!

Review: Shadow Angel is book 2 in D.K. Hood's new thriller series. In this book, we follow Beth and Dax, who are FBI agents, as they try to solve a serial murder case. At the same time, we are following Beth's mission to stop a second murderer. Does Beth solve the second case or is her prime suspect innocent like everyone else believes? Read Shadow Angel today to find out!
While the first book is my favourite so far, I still enjoyed and recommend this one.
*3 stars is still a good rating for me and I hope you give this book a chance as well!*
I found it has a slower pace than Dark Angel but just like the first book, I could not figure out who the first murderer was!
In both of her books, D.K. Hood includes statistics showing how few children have access to books in their homes and requests for readers to share their love of reading with kids they know. I read all the way to the last page but I know that not everyone does. To make her message and call to action more impactful, I think that information should be at the front of the book for the people who stop reading once the story ends!
Shadow Angel is now published so read it today! 🎉
*Please check trigger warnings*
Shadow Angel by D.K Hood is the second book in the new brilliant Detective Beth Katz series and it was a gripping and unputdownable FBI agent crime thriller that will have you hooked from the beginning till the very end. I could not wait to start the second book and it was just the same! Brilliant!
Detective Beth Katz has a knack of finding serial killers, well she did have a good teacher - her father. So when she joined the FBI she wanted real justice for all her victims!!!
However, she has a dark side and has to keep this side hidden from everyone including her colleagues. After her last case she was she was sent to Rattlesnake Creel and she has to work closely with her new partner Dax Styles. This is going to be tricky.......as Dax is watching her every move and she likes working on her own.
This new book is excellent and full of great twists and turns throughout.
Big Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalleu for this eARC
"Shadow Angel” is a crime thriller novel written by D.K. Hood. The book is the second in the Detective Beth Katz series. The story revolves around FBI agent Beth Katz and her partner, who are investigating the murder of a young woman named Cassie Durham. The investigation leads them to a dark web site where they discover that Cassie was not the only victim of a twisted killer. The killer is still at large, and Beth is determined to bring him to justice.
The book is a nail-biting thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author has done an excellent job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere that will keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is well-crafted. The book is fast-paced and full of action, making it an exciting read.
Overall, “Shadow Angel” is an addictive and compelling read that will appeal to fans of crime thrillers. The book is well-written, and the story is engaging from start to finish. If you’re looking for a thrilling read that will keep you guessing until the very end, then “Shadow Angel” is definitely worth checking out.
Until next time!
Shadow Angel is a very well written romantic suspense. The plot is a real edge of your seat page turner. I recommend this book.
I started this immediately after reading book 1 because I was so invested in Beth, she’s got me hooked!.
You can definitely read this as a standalone as the author recaps everything about Beth & Styles (Dax) in the first chapter.
This case was so harrowing and disturbing it really gave me the creeps if I’m honest.
We have the main case that Beth is working on alongside Styles but she’s also got a little side hustle going on, hunting down a serial killer who she wants to kill.
This one also had me hooked and I enjoyed it because it had a darker side to it than the previous book had which I loved.
I’m so excited to see what’s next for Beth & Styles, I hope I’m not waiting too long for book 3.
In book 2 in the series, Beth and Dax are back on the trail of another serial killer. Again another straightforward case as far as the police procedural case, but the uniqueness of the series is this vigilante urge Beth has and that she has to counter that with her partner. Where she is focused on solving the case and getting her version of justice, all while not getting caught herself. She’s a bit of a female Dexter.
I love this hook of not knowing whether to root for or against her and the added excitement of whether she remains the only one knowing of her true purpose and drive.
If you love police procedurals, this added twist really ups the genre and should be interesting to watch play out.
Beth Katz book 2.
When a young woman is reported missing after failing to return home from work, Beth and her partner offer help to the local Sheriff in locating her. Then another woman is reported missing from a bar in a neighbouring town.
When the body of the first woman is discovered in an isolated shack they could not be prepared for the horrifying sight they see.
Is there a serial killer working in the area. And can Beth use her very specialised knowledge to catch them before they strike again?
I loved this book. I was hooked from start to finish. I will recommend this book to all serial killer genre fans. Can't wait to read the next book in this intriguing series.
