It takes a killer to catch a killer!

Detective Beth Katz is back in another thrilling installment in the new series by D.K. Hood. After reading the first book in the series Dark Angel, I was an instant fan and kicking myself for having not read any previous books by D.K. Hood. I found Shadow Angel to be intriguing, shocking and hard to put down!

FBI agent Beth Katz and her partner Dax Styles are called in when Cassie Durham’s friend/co-worder reports her missing. Cassie was last seen leaving the bar where she strips. Soon after her body is found posed and wearing heavy makeup, another woman goes missing. Beth knows that there is a very sick and twisted killer out there. Beth is no strangers to killers; her father was a serial killer, and she is a vigilante who hunts down killers when not working as a tough as nails FBI agent.

I enjoyed the mystery and investigative work done by Beth and Dax in this book. I enjoy their working dynamic and banter. I also enjoyed the tension and mounting danger as Beth went undercover to solve the case. There were some pulse-pounding scenes which had me flipping the pages wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I found this book to be well written, well thought out, perfectly paced, suspenseful, and hard to put down. I was fully invested in the plot and look forward to reading more books in this addictive and thrilling new series! I can't wait to read the next book in the series! I have a feeling it is going to be another riveting page turner!

Suspenseful, gripping, shocking, well written and hard to put down!

When black crows are spotted circling over an abandoned cabin in the woods near Rattlesnake Creek, FBI agent Beth Katz and her maverick partner Dax Styles fear something is very wrong. Beth has been hunting serial killers for years, and as she races to the forest she vows to serve her own form of justice. Cassie Durham’s friends reported her missing when she didn’t return home from a local bar a few days ago. Now, Cassie sits in darkness, her last breath taken days before. Beth notices the rouged cheeks and bright blue eyeshadow are nothing like the pictures she’s seen of Cassie alive. When another woman vanishes from a night out, Beth is convinced a twisted killer is in town. A clue on the dark web leads her to a local late-night hangout.
The second book in the series & another engrossing read. The pace is good & the characters strong. I do feel that I'm just starting to get to know Beth & I'm sure as the series progresses more & more will be revealed but I am intrigued. Beth goes undercover & I found I was on the edge of my seat & finished the book in two sittings
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Beth and Dax are getting used to working together. Beth is buying a cabin, and is getting ready to furnish it by traveling around to the countryside, perfect cover for hunting down her victims.
Both of them are getting ready for some time off, when Dax gets called to help the local sheriff on a missing person, a dancer from a local gentlemen club. Just a quick search is opening up a whole can of worms. Then another woman disappears – Beth knows that this more than just a coincidence. She goes undercover, and things don’t necessarily go as planned.

I read the first book in the Beth Katz series just a few weeks back. As with the first one, the story is straightforward and fast-paced.

The book starts with a brief background of Beth Katz, as with the first book. Her father was a serial killer and also murdered her mother. Beth, with the FBI, will go to any extent to punish serial killers, even if it means stepping well outside acceptable limits. She had moved to Rattlesnake creek to partner with Dax Styles in the last book. This time, local law enforcement seeks their help after a dancer at a bar, Cassie Burnham, goes missing from an outlying area of Rattlesnake creek. As Beth & Styles visit the club, Beth herself is assaulted but saved by Styles. In a few days, another dancer Vicki Strauss, goes missing and they find the body of Cassie. It is clear a serial killer is on the prowl. Beth is also following the case of Levi Jackson who was released from custody after the prosecution could not prove his guilt in the case of an assault. It seems though that the cases are not connected, though Beth is determined to get to the culprits, even if it means taking very high risks.

I liked the characters of both Beth and Styles. As a person determined to bring serial killers to justice, her strength and purpose shine through. Styles character provides a sense of balance to proceedings. The story is engrossing and fast-paced. The novelty is in Beth’s character and the plot is simple. A series I intend following.

My rating: 3.75 / 5.

There's a new serial killer in Rattlesnake Creek , one who poses his victims in a creepy and disturbing manner. Beth and Dax have several suspects and will have to work hard to catch the killer. Meanwhile, Beth, the Tarot Card Killer, is still hunting serial killer Levi Jackson who is out after being acquitted of assault.
This was a twisty and suspenseful read. There is further development of the main characters and cameos from characters from Snakeskin Gulley and Black Rock Falls. I can't wait for the next book.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

Shadow Angel is the second Detective Beth Katz novel . I haven’t read the first one but did not have any problems picking this one up and taking off with the story. Beth Katz is a FBI agent hunting for serial killers and her history in cybercrimes makes her darn good at it. But Beth has a dark side. The daughter of a serial killer, Beth is a psychopath and really good at blending in. Working with the local sheriff, Beth and her partner styles are tracking a killer who is taking sex workers and killing them in a gruesome manner. On the side, Beth is doing some hunting of her own. A vigilante serial killer, Beth is hunting a serial killer who escaped justice. Beth is the Tarot Killer and using her inner psychopath to bring justice to the victims of serial killers with a little bit of murder herself. In the vein of Dexter, Beth is a likable, dark character who has the reader cheering for her to win. I could not put this book down! Always one for a good vigilante story, this novel is a unique twist on the revenge story for nonstop thrill ride. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

I think I might have preferred this book as we get to know more about Beth. I really enjoy her and Dax working together and seeing their relationship grow. Jo & Ty feature in this book more and although they usually annoy me they didn’t take over the case and seeing Beth interact with serial killer expert Jo added some tension.

I love the undercover operations they run. They always add a lot of suspense and Beth’s disguises sound amazing. The hunt for the killer kept me guessing and I love that we never know how the investigation is going to end.

We get to see more of Beth’s dark side in this book and I’m so invested in whether she will be able to keep her secret. I will definitely be checking out more of this series and look forward to getting to know more about Beth.

I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

4.5⭐

D.K. Hood returns with another cracking story. That grabs you from the start and never lets go.

As FBI Special Agent Beth Katz settles into her new role in the Rattlesnake Creek field office. Whilst still enabling her darker side as the tarot card killer.

But before Beth can hone in on a new target. She and her newly acquired partner Styles have a case to investigate. When stripper Cassie Durham is reported missing.

And when her body is found days later in an abandoned cabin. Beth knows her killer tendencies are going to have to wait. As the hunt is on for a killer who poses his victims and one who clearly isn't going to stop.

Which isn't good news for Beth. As the last thing she needs is local field agent and profiler extraordinaire Jo Wells getting involved. Especially as Jo has an uncanny knack for spotting a serial killer.

And with plenty of twists, suspense and danger. Not to mention great characters, including a few familiar faces. This was a really fantastic read, and I can't wait to read more. As Beth and Styles are really starting to gel and could soon be giving Kane and Alton a run for their money!

I would totally recommend Shadow Angel to others.

Dear D.K. Hood, no one can create the most depraved and deviant perps like you do!!!
I love this new series!! I ditched my initial reservations about Beth’s dark side as I read book 2, I’m totally Team Beth!
I love the sting operations Styles and Beth perform. I also love vivid descriptions of how Katz transforms herself and plots and schemes to take the garbage out.
I love that Styles can fly his own bird and poor Bear and his chicken terror.
I am so excited for the next book because I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Shadow Angel. The second novel to feature FBI Agent Beth Katz, set in the fictional Montana town of Rattlesnake Creek and its environs.

Cassie Burnham, an exotic dancer at a local club goes missing after her Friday night shift and Sheriff Cash Ryder asks Beth and her partner, Agent Dax Styles, to help with the investigation. They find Cassie’s body posed and grotesquely made up in an abandoned cabin. That posing leads Beth to suspect they are hunting a serial killer and it is confirmed when another dancer goes missing. Beth will have to go undercover to catch a twisted killer.

I enjoyed Shadow Angel, which is perhaps not as spectacular in terms of the action scenes as its predecessor, but still remains an engrossing read with a dual plot line. The first part of the novel is concerned with the capture of the serial killer with cameos from characters in the author’s other series, medical examiner Shane Wolfe and FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter. There are mentions of Beth’s next quarry, but it only gets full focus towards the end of the novel.

I’m still not entirely convinced by the psychopathic vigilante serial killer persona of Beth Katz. It certainly adds a twist of drama to proceedings as she worries that she’ll get caught, but surely a true psychopath wouldn’t have that worry or any other, knowing that their superior intellect will see them through? There is more of her story to come out and that may explain her psyche better, because, at the moment she’s a conundrum.

Both of the plots are quite slim and both end in a showdown with Beth. That’s not a bad thing as the author injects plenty of tension and small incidents into the read, keeping the reader turning the pages and anxious to know more.

Shadow Angel is a good read that I can recommend.

Having just read book one in this series I was excited to be able to read book two straight away.
This one is just as good as the first book and I really like the main character, Beth Katz.
Beth and Styles are called after a woman is found dead in an abandoned cabin in the woods. She has clearly been posed by the killer but they did not expect to find her sewn to the sofa.
Beth and Styles discover the woman’s identity and set out to speak to miners at the exotic dance club where she worked.
When another woman is killed in the same way they know they need to stop this killer quickly.
Beth also has something she needs to do in this book and a killer who has been targeting mothers and children is firmly in her sights.
This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I know this is only the second book in the series but I am in love with these two characters - Katz and Styles. They are alike in some ways - both skirt the law in taking care of matters although they are careful not to cross the line. Well, except for Beth's secret that she must keep. And she is walking a fine line due to Styles's perception.

While Katz and Styles are looking for a serial killer who appears to be targeting strippers, the Tarot Killer is busy looking for a different serial killer. The crime scenes of the strippers are horrible and it's hard to imagine a killer who could be so deranged.

The relationship between Beth and Dax evolves as they work together, and she finds new emotions that she is having to deal with. He continues to be surprised by her experiences and her ability to disguise her appearance. This story will keep you engrossed from the start to the finish and leave you wondering what these agents will be up against next.

Book #2 in this series is another captivating, albeit chilling read. FBI Agent Beth Katz and Agent Dax Styles have a predator in their midst. When a woman who works at a local club as an exotic dancer disappears, they fear the worse. What they find is even worse than what they imagined. This killer is beyond depraved. You can literally feel the evil emanating off of the pages of the book. They know they have their work cut out for them with this disturbed individual. He is like a thief in the night when he takes these women. He leaves no trace of himself on the bodies, and no one sees anything. Beth Katz is having a hard time controlling her dark side as she investigates this case. Her alter ego, The Tarot Card Killer, has a dark sense of justice. We have learned that Beth Katz is an FBI agent by day and a vigilante killer on the side. Her father was a serial killer who killed her mother, but she has learned to control her urges and use those dark urges to clean up the streets all while serving justice on the right side of the law working for the FBI.

This dynamic duo will use their individual strengths to find justice for those who need it all while Beth has to hide her dark side from her new partner and friend. Beth is a chameleon who can go undercover and be someone else entirely which makes her dangerous to those she hunts. There are actually two stories going on in this book. The killer in their town and a killer that Beth has in her sights to be judge, jury and executioner. This book is not for the faint of heart. I confess I was a little jumpy after reading it, but I still enjoyed it. The suspense was nail biting. If you love a good thriller about serial killers or you love Criminal Minds, you will enjoy this book and this series. The tension is high and intense, and it will keep you on your toes. D.K. Hood has started another masterpiece series that I expect to see her add many installments. These characters will get under your skin and leave you wanting more.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Agents Katz & Styles are now partners that are working at the Rattlesnake Creek field office. They do work well together but Beth knows that she has to keep her wits about her as she could slip up with Styles around. She can’t let the her secret be uncovered ever as she needs to repay her father’s debt. They have been called in to get the sheriff after a stripper is found murdered. Beth knows that this is the work of a serial killer and that they need to find him before he brutally kills another woman. But will they be able to find the clues that they need to stop the killer?
Beth has been working on her side project she has tried to be careful and Styles gives her the perfect alibi to hide her latest outing. But how long can she keep him in the dark?
Beth is a strong independent woman that has had to overcome so much. She has a messy past that she won’t and can’t allow to get in her way. She tries really hard to fit in but I do wonder how long she can continue before getting caught? Dax is a former military man that misses nothing. He is a Alpha male that wants to take care of his partner Beth and he knows that he can’t push her too hard. What will he do when he finds out about Beth’s pastime?
A good read. Keeps you turning the pages. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher Bookouture for the copy. This is my voluntary review.

I still hate getting into the mind of a serial murderer who does it for his reprehensible reasons. But getting into the mind of FBI special agent Beth Katz who is a hereditary serial killer whose prey are the monster is more than OK with me. The FBI is unaware of this aspect of her life but had sent her off to the wilds of Montana to work with Agent Dax Styles who is an unrepentant loner who always gets the job done. This time the monster is targeting young women employed as pole dancers. He not only has an agenda, but he has rituals about the death and beyond. Beth takes matters into her own hands and...

I listened to an audio version of the first book and really enjoyed it. The second one is just as good. The plot is really gripping and has loads of characters who could be the killer. It does have a slow start but the tension builds really well. I like the development of the working relationship of Beth and Dax. I’m really looking forward to the next book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me access to an early copy of this book.

I thought this was a good follow up to the first book. It has all the action the first one had. I did think it started out slow. It seemed a bit wordy to begin with. While I enjoyed this book I don’t think it was quite as good as the first one.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Shadow Angel’, book 2 in the Detective Beth Katz series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Cassie Burnham, a dancer at the Outlaws Saloon in Rattlesnake Creek, hasn’t been seen since her last performance. When her body is found with newly applied make-up and attached to a sofa in an isolated cabin, Sheriff Cash Ryder asks FBI Agents Beth Katz and Dex Styles if they can help him out. More bodies are discovered who’ve been killed in a similar fashion and they’re convinced a twisted serial killer is in town who’s on the lookout for blonde-haired women. Meanwhile, Beth is determined that as soon as she gets some down-time she’s going to locate Levi Jackson who’s got away with murder once and she’s not going to make sure he can’t kill again.

After reading the first book in this new series I couldn’t wait to read ‘Shadow Angel’ and learn more of Beth’s background and why as the Tarot Killer she’s determined to rid Montana of its twisted psychopaths. The plot is really well thought-out with a whole collection of suspicious characters any of whom could be the killer, and although it’s slow to start it becomes more gripping until the tension builds to a crescendo and Beth’s life is on the line. I like Beth and Styles as the longer they work together the more their characters gel, but I’d rather Beth be just an FBI agent rather than a psychopath as I worry that she’ll be found out. It’s good that several of the characters from Black Rock Falls are included in this new series and I’m very much looking forward to book number three.

This second book of the Detective Beth Katz series picks up where the first, Dark Angel, left off. Beth and Styles are working together on a new case involving the disappearance and brutal murders of local exotic dancers and Beth has her sites set on the Tarot Killers next target. A serial killer who manged to escaped justice by the courts and is now protected by double jeopardy.

Thanks to the graphic depiction of the torture inflicted by the killer, I could feel the victim's fear and pain. It is dark, twisted, and so intense I was holding my breath at times.

I devoured this within hours. I could not turn the pages fast enough. This is the true definition of unputdownable. This was even better than the first book which I didn't think was possible. I am obsessed with this series and cannot wait for more!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in return for my voluntary and honest review.
