I've been meaning to try this author for quite some time now, and after a fantastic experience with the first book of this series I couldn't resist adding Shadow Angel to my TBR straight away. Beth Katz makes for such an unique main character with her being both FBI and a psychopath serial killer... She is no less impressive in this sequel, and this book will take you on another wild ride. Make sure to brace yourself, because things are once again getting pretty dark and twisted along the way!

Before I continue, I want to point out that this is definitely a series to read in order. Technically the cases discussed in Shadow Angel are completely separate, but without having the background knowledge provided in the first book you won't be able to fully appreciate Beth Katz in all her glory. The same goes for the other characters in play and their dynamics... Dark Angel is even better than this sequel, so you will be in for a treat reading it in the first place. That said, I really enjoyed seeing the different characters appear again, and I can appreciate their bond and working relationship growing over time.

I have to say that Rattlesnake Creek, Montana, is such a great setting! The small towns, the forest, the many secluded locations... It makes for such a great backdrop for this series, and it opens so many possibilities for the plot. In Shadow Angel, we have not one, but TWO serial killers in the spotlight, although one is the special side project of our very on serial killer FBI agent. The plot makes references to the crimes of both, although the main focus is on the official FBI investigation... And it's a pretty gruesome murder spree at that.

Like I said before, Beth Katz is without doubt the star of the show, and she is probably one of the main reasons this series works so well. I kind of wish we would learn more about her background and childhood, but her presence is strong and both her actions and thoughts fascinating. Dax Styles makes for such a great FBI partner, and I love how both characters aren't afraid to think outside the box. There are other characters that frequently pop up as well, and I really like the overall dynamics during the investigation.

While Shadow Angel was slightly less exciting and unique than the first book, I did still very much enjoy my time with this sequel. The investigation is a little more straightforward and while there is some undercover work going on and the final part of the book is all serial killer Beth, part of the plot did feel like a more straight-laced FBI investigation than expected. Not a bad thing, and it still makes for some very entertaining (and gruesome!) reading... But I was expecting to see more of Beth's dark side after the first book. This was just a minor niggle though, and I can still very much recommend this series. I can't wait to read the next book myself!

I'm as addicted to this series as I am the Kane and Alton books. The characters are fantastic. The mystery full of suspense. Beloved characters cross both series. I was completely invested in this story. It kept me guessing. Beth Katz is one of the most intriguing characters I have read in a long time. I can't wait for more!

Detective Beth Katz #2

When black crows are spotted circling over an abandoned cabin in the woods near Rattlesnake Creek, FBI agent Beth Katz and her maverick partner Dax Styles fears something is very wrong. Beth has been hunting serial killers for years, and as she races to the forest, she vows to serve her own form of justice, whatever the cost....

Cassie Durhams's friends reported her missing when she didn't return home from a local bar a few days ago. Now, Cassie sits in the darkness, her last breath taken days before. Beth notices the rouged cheeks and bright blue eyeshadow are nothing like the picture's she's seen of Cassie alive. Did someone add the heavy makeup and pose her like this after death?

Beth Katz is a strong character and one smart cookie she also has a dark past. Beth is a vigilante who works for the FBI. This time, Beth and Dax looking for a serial killer of exotic dancers. We learn more of Beth and Dax's backstories. This is a descriptively written story. There are two storylines taking place in this book. We also get some characters from the authors Detective Kane and Alron series. There's so much tension and suspense. There are some grotesque scenes. I think this book was slightly better than the first, probably because we know the characters a little bit better now. I'm eagerly waiting to see what Beth and Dax get up to next.

I would like to thank #Netgalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #ShadowAngel in exchange for an honest review.

Psychopaths at every turn!👀

Shadow Angel was a good thriller and had me on edge throughout. It had plenty of action and suspense, but I just had a bit of trouble with heroine Beth Katz and her tendency to intentionally put herself in danger. She came across as unnecessarily reckless for an experienced FBI agent. She can really rock disguises and come up with plans to enveigle suspects into the open, and when things don't go to plan it really got exciting. But being a killer herself, she's just not my kind of heroine.

The investigation and plot in the first book in the series were better, maybe because the action was less focused on Beth and her plans for extrajudicial killing in her spare time. I also found the ending anticlimactic and a bit of a let down.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Vigilante FBI Beth Katz is back kicking butt and taking names! This is the second book in the series and just as good as the first. A serial killer is abducting and killing pole dancers and leaving them gruesomely displayed. Beth goes under cover as a pole dancer and nearly gets more than she bargained for. This was an exciting read that had me on the edge of my seat. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC that will be released September 12, 2023!

I read this almost immediately after finishing the first book, and this does not disappoint! Beth Katz, despite her darkness and her past is not the anti hero you expect, instead you find yourself almost admiring her!
Fantastic thriller, well written and draws you in from the start. Highly recommended, you won't want to put this down!

Another fantastic book by D.K Hood. I couldn’t put it down it was gripping intense. A little crazy I adore Beth she’s completely unique and pretty bad ass. She’s definitely my new favourite fbi agent. I can’t wait to get to know more about her. I love Styles and their working relationship. Bear is adorable, loved the crime plot was thrilling. The tarot killer is something I love and can’t wait to hear more about. Can not wait for book 3!

Book #2 in the Beth Katz series. I found this to be a bit slower read than book #1, but we do see a little of what makes Beth ticks.
The cross over of characters from the Kane and Alton series is a great addition to this series.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of Shadow Angel by D.K. Hood. I didn’t love book 1, but I tried this one, book 2, anyway. Wow, this one had very graphic murders so be warned! I still didn’t warm up to Beth, and in this one her vigilante/serial killer plot just seemed thrown in. I think I would like her better without that storyline because she and Styles are good partners and work well together. I think if you love Hood’s previous series and love the vigilante angle, you will love this one too.

If you enjoy her series with Kane and Jenna this is a must read also!

It does tie in sorta with the other series but you don't have to read that series first. Some new characters and some from the other series!

Definitely interested to see where this story line will go!

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

Excellent book! Detective Beth Katz is back in book #2 of my new favorite series. This book has everything I love about a mystery/thriller book! So much suspense. Beth is on the hunt for not one but two serial killers with the help of her partner Styles. I love that this series is nothing like your typical Detective chasing a serial killer storyline. Beth is not your ordinary Detective deep down she has her own way of performing justice. Which adds so much more suspense to the book ! Absolutely love this book and this series. Hoping there will be more coming!

Book 2 in the Detective Katz series and was as enjoyable as the first. I am enjoying getting to know Katz & Styles and the relationship developing between them. Very wary of each other at first they now have a healthy respect for each other. I love D.K. Hoods style of writing and although I am really enjoying this new series I still love the Kane & Alton series the best. If you haven't already check out this authors other books as they are all just brilliant

Book 2 in the new series (If you have not read Bk1 - Dark Angel) grab it, they both release the same day and I highly recommend starting at the beginning. Loved book 2 more as we learn more about Beth and Styles. Had to smile with some of the byplay with Styles and Beth. We also see more of Chase Ryder, Sheriff in Rattlesnake and TJ the owner the restaurant/pub. There are two tales taking place through out Shadow Angel. Both take you down a twisty path that will having you searching for daylight and sunshine. Dr Wolfe is features more prominent as well as Jo (FBI profiler) and Carter (FBI). This heightens the tension and leaves me wondering again how long this series will last because Wolfe and Jo are tenacious and intelligent in their own right. I do get that psychopaths can be your next door neighbor and hide in plain site especially if they can manage the dark side as our Beth Katz can. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #ShadowAngel #DetectiveBethKatz #D.K.Hood #Bookouture #NetGalley

I enjoyed book 2 in the Detective Beth Katz series but it wasn't as much of a stand out as book 1 as far as uniqueness with serial killer/psychopath research goes.

Beth's character still isn't as developed as I'd hope, but we do find out a bit more. If it is a case of slowly discovering more about her in each book, I enjoy that style too for ongoing series.

The police procedural plot side I thought was fab, mysterious and thrilling, as was the Tarot Killer aspect again. I'm also enjoying the working relationship between Styles and Katz, and a couple of other people they bring in where necessary.

I'm looking forward to book 3!

Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Title: Shadow Angel
Author: D. K. Hood
Series: Special Agent Beth Katz #2
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Crime Thriller
Pub Date: September 12, 2023
My Rating: 4. Stars
Pages: 319

If you are new to this series ~ Special agent Beth Katz is an FBI agent in DC who is good at tracking down psychopathic serial killers. She knows how their mind works as she has had first-hand experience as her own father was a serial killer.
Beth is also a serial killer and takes down serial killer ~ when she does she leaves a Tarot card and is known as the ‘Tarot Killer,
Her partner suspects that she has a dark side and believes she needs a psych evaluation.
She has the evaluation and it is decided to reevaluate in a year but in the meantime is transferred out of DC to the FBI Field post in Rattlesnake Creek, Montana.

Now taking up where “Dark Angel” left off, Special Agent Beth Katz has purchased a small cabin in Rattlesnake Creek as a getaway from the office she shares with Agent Dax Styles also needs a more secure place to research the dark web for psychopaths, child killers, and other bad people who need to be removed from society. As the ‘Tarot Killer’ she believes she can take vengeance on twisted manias who slip through the net of justice.

In this story the Sherrif Cash Ryder calls on FBI agents Katz and Styles to help with appears to be a serial killing. Cassie Durham’s friends reported her missing when she didn’t return home from “Outlaws’ a local bar where she works as one of the strippers. Now, Cassie is found dead in a gruesome scene. When ME Wolf and his team examine her body they known this wasn’t a first kill.
Beth once again goes undercover~ which we already know from “Dark Angel” she is great at!
In that story she disguised herself as a sex worker in a situation where the average age was thirteen. She is a master with disguises- has a truck full of costumes and other items she has gathers from thrift shops etc. her truck of disguises includes disposable contact lenses in every color.
Additionally “The Tarot Killer, is on the hunt for a killer whose victim rate is high,

Aww another GREAT story!.
Love “The ‘A Letter from D.K. Hood’ ~ in her letter she tells us readers that wiring about a serial killer who
is also a FBI agent was a thrilling challenge. Yes! Our author was indeed able to show us both sides of our heroin Beth Katz. She is a dedicated FBI agent but has an alter ego as the - ”Targot Killer’! She uses her psychopathic insights to hunt down unstoppable monsters.

Okay I am ready for another D.K. Hood thriller!!!.

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for September 12, 2023.

Second book in the new DK Hood series Detective Beth Katz. The new series is just as addictive and brilliant as the Kane and Alton series. Beth and Dax Styles are a great double act and she is ruthless. I highly recommend this series.

The next book in the Detective Beth Katz series starts out with a bang. Can Beth and her partner, Dex, find out what is going on before more murders happen?
We find out more about Beth, Dex and the community they live in, Rattlesnake Creek. I wonder where (or, if) their relationship is going to go beyond coworker/partner?????? And, will Beth be able to keep her secret….a secret????
D.K. Hood writes a solid suspense thriller.
Looking forward to reading Book 3!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was very lucky to be able to read the second book of this series right after the first book, Dark Angel. This is a very good series. Beth Katz, an FBI agent and her partner, Dax Styles, are hunting another serial killer who is killing dancers. Beth is the daughter of a serial killer and a psychopath who seeks justice for any serial killer who skirts the justice system. In her private time, she hunts them down and is known as the Tarot Card Killer. So we get 2 plots in one book.

In this book, we get to see a softer side of Beth, which I really enjoyed. We are learning more about her and her life after her father was arrested. I'm enjoying watching Beth and Style's relationship growing. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. The character development is great and the story is a page turner and so well written.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it and highly recommend this book..
