The Perfect Patient tells an interesting tale of someone with multiple personality disorder who seems to have a history of memory loss and is connected to a lot of family secrets.
This story is intriguing with a hotel room murder and the beginning of innocence. The story was a little difficult for me to get into, as it didn’t catch my attention till about half way through when the story started to pick up pace.
There was a lot of subplots and underlying twists connecting the history of the main character. This however, made it sometimes difficult to understand what was happening.
Special thanks to netgalley and bookoture for providing me an advanced readers copy.
before we get into this review, i'd like to thank netgalley for this arc
in this book, we follow jades story. jade is an 18 year old girl who has been accused of murder. tara, the psychologist, is on the hunt to find out whether jade is innocent or if she's the murderer. the only issue is, jade has no recollection of the events that took place on the night of the murder. we follow tara as she tries to find answers. is jade innocent? is she pretending to have amnesia? is she being protected by her family? or is the truth something much more dark & twisted than tara could've imagined?
this was such a good, fast paced psychological thriller! i absolutely loved the way the author created the element of mystery. one of my friends was reading this book at the same time as i was & we were both discussing how we're convinced we knew what was going but it was something else entirely;
i feel like the characters brought so much to this story. every single one of them had something going on that made me think i need answers'. during the story, we're provided with answers for the most part.
the only thing that let me down was the fact that we weren't given answers in regards to taras past. not having answers throughout the book does help the element of mystery but as one of the main characters, i do think we should have been given some sort of an explanation in order to end the story. (hence the 4 stars).
if you're looking for a shocking, gripping yet twisted thriller for spooky season, this is a really good one to start the season off correctly! mark your calenders because the perfect patient' releases on september 28th!
As a healthcare worker, I loved this thriller! Jade’s character is so well thought out and descriptive, it made her seem so real. Jade’s family dynamics make this book so interesting.
Relentless and gripping, the tension keeps driving to the very end. Nothing is quite as it seems and twists are everywhere. Can't say everyone gets a HEA, but there is satisfaction at the end.
I know that Luana is a psychologist herself, as am I. That’s why I was so excited to read this and I have to give it to her. The plot is interesting and I was thoroughly engaged the entire time. Unfortunately, I felt the DID representation could potentially be stigmatizing. It was done badly, it’s just unfortunately something that people easily associate with insane or deeply disturbing people.
From the description I had high hopes for The Perfect Patient and it did not disappoint. I was immediately gripped and the story never let go. It had plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing and I loved the ending. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
The Perfect Patient is an entertaining psychological thriller. The main character, Dr. Tara Black, is a psychologist assigned to evaluate a young woman accused of murder, but claiming amnesia. The young woman and her wealthy family seem to have secrets, but so does Tara with a traumatic event in her own past. This book was a fast read for me and I was engrossed in the story, both the elements that were predictable and those that were surprising. Both Tara and Jade, the accused, are interesting characters and I enjoyed their rapport. However, I was so disappointed at the abrupt ending. There are a couple intriguing plot twists at the very end, but SO many loose ends remain unresolved. I'm rating the book 3.5 stars and hoping for a follow-up book to provide answers to several questions regarding both Tara and Jade.
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Bookouture. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
The Perfect Patient had me turning the pages way past my bedtime, I was thoroughly engaged from the first chapter.
Jade wakes up in a room at her dad’s hotel with no knowledge of what had happened, but spotting a body lying on the floor.
Dr Tara Black, a psychologist is tasked with finding out if Jade really did black out and how to get her memory of that night back.
This book had me guessing until the very end. While reading this I honestly had every single person Tara encountered on my suspect list. The plot was unique and clever and the writing was fantastic.
I am wondering if this could become a series as there were some things left open. I do hope so!
Oh I did like this it really got me guessing, with the number of books I read that is hard, and the ending was just perfect, but it felt like it was lending towards a sequel as there are unanswered questions
The characters were well written although I was a bit sceptical of some of Tara's actions but then I read the author's biography so then I thought it was possible.
I was given an advance copy by Bookouture and netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
My Review 📕
The Perfect Patient is one of the best psychological thrillers that I’ve read in a while. This book gripped me right from the prologue and that grip tightened all the more as I progressed through this unputdownable read. Of course as I do read quite a lot of thrillers I was certain I had it all sussed but boy was I proved wrong time and time again. There was a couple of times where I actually did gasp out loud. There were a couple of unanswered questions I felt at the end and I’m hoping there may be a sequel where we learn more about Tara , one of the main protagonist’s and her past life.. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Seventeen-year-old Jade has been accused of murder, but did she really do it?
Psychologist Tara Black is there to find out the truth but there will be obstacles in her way and she will need to question what other secrets could be hiding.
This is a complex narrative with quite a few characters to leave you guessing, I loved the way Lewis writes which was easy to follow. Lewis also gives this storyline a possibility of a sequel which I really hope there is, as the character of Tara is mysterious and I hope to find out more.
A great first for me with this author.
A good read with the author using a lot of characters to keep you guessing as to what had happened. The back story of Tara doesn’t get resolved but I’m guessing another book may complete that tale. So the start is good but it did get lost a bit in the middle with too much repetition and whilst I enjoyed solving the crime
(wrongly on more than one count) I can’t say the ending left me totally satisfied
I can tell the authors training with psychology really worked well with this novel.
Jane has been accused of killing a man. She has no history of mental problems and seems to come from a stable family. Is she the true killer or a good lier?
This novel and the investigation into her background and the murder was fascinating. I studied both Psychology and Journalism in college and enjoyed the twists.
Does Janes family know more about what happened? Janes is sedated quite a bit and is kind of in a trance part of the time. As Dr. Tara Black tries to talk to Jade, her family and others she must sort the truth!
As a lover of crime and thrillers, this book was an easy read. A gripping beginning with a great build up, however I found the middle a little repetitive and overfleshed out. By the end it had picked up speed again and I found it so interesting to see how each persons psyche was so different to what was assumed. I do wish that the ending provided more closure with regards to Tara and her story! ***Would love for a bonus chapter one day to tie up all loose strings!!!
An innocent young girl? Or a dangerous killer?
This is a very complex tale involving the murder of a former policemen, a troubled teenager and a very dysfunctional family. Not to mention the psychologist with a past. The police think the case is cut and dried. But is it? Is Jade Jameson a murderer or a victim of circumstance?
Seventeen year old Jade Jameson is accused of killing ex-policeman Carl Ress. But what was she doing in the hotel room with him prior to his death? In a hotel owned by her very powerful father Ray Jameson no less. Jade claims she cannot remember what happened, waking to a darkened room and Carl's bloodied body on the floor. But who is telling the truth and who is lying?
Tara Black is a psychologist with a past that almost mirror's Jade's. Perhaps that is why Ray had their solicitor engage Tara to assess Jade for her defence. And despite what comes her way, Tara is determined to get to the truth...no matter the cost. But is it worth it in the end?
By the end, we are no closer to learning the truth about Tara but we do learn the truth about Carl's murder and Jade's involvement, if any. I didn't like many of the characters and the only one I did actually like was killed off. And even then there was no resolution. Too many loose ends at the end of this one for my liking.
But what really did it for me was the blatant prejudice and misrepresentation of Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Jade owned one called Ziggy but the author painted him as a vicious brute when staffies are anything but. It was alluded to that Ziggy would attack anyone because he didn't like people. So not true. Staffies are people lovers. They make useless guard dogs for this reason.
Overall, the story jumped about with no real resolution by the end. So it was a bit of a miss for me.

WOW 🤩 what a rollercoaster. Psychological thrillers are definitely my thang. Hooked from beginning to end. Couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Great storyline that really creates such intrigue. The suspense builds throughout and so often it feels like a tip of the tongue situation and just when you think you might get some answers your actually just on the tip of the chair ready to fall off with curiosity. It really builds the suspense. Loved Tara as a character, Jade I wanted to like but she kept me at arms length and as for Ray 😳. Do yourself a favour an just settle in for the many twists that are going to hit you from all sides. This is one to read. I definitely feel I’ve been teased with a continuation of Doctor Tara Blacks story.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review #ThePerfectPatient
Luana Lewis, clinical psychologist, and bestselling author, returns with her latest innovative, intriguing, and gripping psychological thriller, THE PERFECT PATIENT— where she showcases her brilliant skills and expertise in this complex medico-legal case—A young woman with an abusive, traumatic childhood charged with the murder of a retired police officer, found in a hotel suite owned by her father. However, she does not remember. Self-defense, an innocent teen, a calculated killer, or someone else?
Psychologically rich and absorbing, this multi-layered, well-written, intense domestic suspense infused with legal and medical will hook you from page one to the conclusion, and never let's go!
THE PERFECT PATIENT opens with Jade (age 17), the daughter of Ray and Sandra Jameson. She is in the Red Suite of The Onyx, a glamorous hotel, and there is blood everywhere. The victim is Carl Ress, a retired divorced former police officer in his fifties.
He was stabbed 11 times in an intense, brutal murder attack. However, there was no connection between Jade and the victim. Jade recalled him buying her a drink at the bar and remembers nothing afterward.
Dr. Tara Black, single (age 42)— for the last fifteen years, has been at Royal University Hospital as the head of psychology in the Neurology Department and is now in private practice. She is delighted to land this case from the solicitor with the influential and affluent real estate mogul Jay Jameson. Anthony Edwards was the first expert appointed to the case but had to step down due to an illness. What happened?
Tara is dating Daniel, who works in mergers and acquisitions and is married with two children. Daniel was a friend of her older brother, who is still missing after her parent's murder years ago. She was away when it happened, and the cops think the murderer was Matthew. She has since changed her name due to the publicity surrounding the case.
Others involved in the case, in addition to the family:
Valerie Bennett, Jade's solicitor
Lucy, Jade's best friend who also works at the hotel
Risha Bassi, the manager of The Onyx and the stepsister.
Tara becomes intricately involved in the case, trying desperately to crack this case and dig into Jade's past. Jade has an ankle monitor, so Tara has to set up the visits at Jade's home, where she lives with her parents in a four-story townhouse in St. John's Wood, one of London's poshest suburbs. She had never interviewed an accused murderer at home previously. Jade wants to be a veterinarian surgeon.
However, the controlling and influential father, Jay, seems to have something to hide. Does he not want his daughter to remember? Jade appears quiet, and her teachers say pretty much the same—no clue as to why she had committed an act of extreme violence. However, she is facing a murder charge. Did someone set her up or something else?
Years ago, Jay (at age 28, married) was a bouncer and later managed a strip club, The Diamonds, and the site of the current hotel. There were drugs and strippers. Sandra was a dancer with her younger sister, Paula. Paula is dead due to an overdose.
Tara has worked with many memory loss patients and feels she can break through with Jade; however, the father wants her to withdraw and keeps her from her interviews. She must finish and submit her report. She is tenacious and has integrity. However, there are threats and a hint of a bribe. He knows about her past. Someone winds up dead, and she is in danger.
How far will this family go to keep their secrets? Who murdered Carl? Motive? Will Tara be able to solve the puzzle before she is kicked off the case, or worse, dead? The web of lies slowly unravels.
The past isn't going to stay buried forever. Disturbing, absorbing, compelling, and deliciously sinister—THE PERFECT PATIENT is a novel readers will devour in one sitting. The story unfolds in layers, each one more shocking than the last.
Highly impressive, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style with finesse and expertise. I read Lewis' debut in 2014, Don't Stand So Close (Random House), when I started my blog and enjoyed it, too. The author handles the abuse, trauma, and mental issues with sensitivity and compassion. With clever misdirection and twists, you will be guessing until the satisfying conclusion. Medical, Legal, and Literary are my favorites.
SEQUEL: I would like to possibly see a sequel to catch up with the characters and dive deeper into Dr. Tara Black's (I loved her character) background, the murder of her family, and the missing brother, among other things.
I highly recommend the author and the book and look forward to reading more.

The Perfect Patient by Luana Lewis was a really good read. It was fast paced with plenty of twists and turns.
The characters were good, I loved the story itself it was so enjoyable and exciting, and the style of writing was perfect.
Just like the storyline the characters came to life with Lewis’ evocative writing skills and I could feel how they were feeling throughout the storyline.

Is Jade Jameson an innocent young girl, or a dangerous killer? She has been accused of murdering a man twice her age, but she can’t remember doing it or what happened that night. When an expert witness is called in to interview Jade to ascertain whether or not her traumatic amnesia is real, it is difficult to tell whether her family is trying to protect her, or if something more sinister is lurking beneath the surface in the Jameson family.
The premise of this book was really interesting and I was excited to read it. The author is a clinical psychologist which comes through in her writing and realistic representation of understanding the human psyche. The pacing was great and this story kept my interest the entire time. I was curious to find out what happened, and I was surprised at the twists and revelations. I thought the ending was a little abrupt, and there were a few questions that I had that the answers were never revealed. Without resolution to these crucial aspects of the plot, it left me with feeling a little unsatisfied with the ending. Overall it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it. If there were to be a sequel for this book, I would definitely read it.
