I used to be a Donna Grant fan. I am not anymore. This book was so badly written I will be skimming her name when her other materials pop up on Goodreads lists.
Ailis is all alone in the world. Being a Fae and enjoysbadventures. She decides she wants to travel to other worlds even though she's been told that it's impossible.
Determined to make it happen, she steals a book from the royals. Which manybFae have attempted but none have been successful.
When she meets Lennox, the dragon king, he shifts to a mortal form.
I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the others!
Love these Dark kings! This is Lennox and Ailis story. When a dark fad decides to open a door to a different realm she meets more than she expects! Great read as always
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this book are completely my own
Even though this book is a part of a full fledge series this is my first book by this author. I saw it was a prequel but between the gorgeous cover and the temptation of dragons thought I could probably get away with it. I think in a way it did hindrance me though as I didn’t feel as connected to the story.
For the most part I enjoyed the whole fae and dragons combination. It was interesting to see how both separate realm’s magic worked. Being as it’s a prequel and I haven’t read the others I had a lot of questions which I assume the other novels probably answer. For example, how did shifting work and was it because of Ailis?
One thing that I didn’t really get either was the insta love Lennox felt towards her before he even shifted. He had inner dialogue commenting on her “curves” which I thought was strange as this was their first contact for both with a different species. I also found it kind of hard to believe Ailis was okay with being kept hidden away when she claimed to be super adventurous. I just felt bad for her for the most part.
There were some parts I wished the author expanded on more like Lennox’s pov during the civil war versus us being stuck with Ailis entirely. I understand the reader needing to see parts of her pov during this but we get absolutely none from Lennox during what’s probably the most exciting part.
It was interesting read overall but I probably won’t be reading anything else in this series.
Love love love this book!
Thank you NetGalley for the eArc copy of this book.
Being very new to Donna Grants books. This was a great introduction into her world.
It was simply captivating and had me wanting more.
A highly entertaining, action packed and emotionally thrilling journey filled with engaging charters, witty banter, heart racing twists and exciting turns. An edge of your seat journey from beginning to end.
IGNITE THE MAGIC is a prequel story to the Dark Kings and the Dragon Kings series. As a fan of both, I was very intrigued by this because it’s not often that Grant returns to the beginning of a story.
I thought this story was a lovely one as it brought greater insight into the worldbuilding and the characters. It felt like an extra treat as you can get a deeper understanding of the characters. While it’s important to have read the other books in this series, the prequel does offer depth to the overall story arc that Grant is trying to create, so I very much enjoyed it.
As always, I love the way she writes and how she develops her characters. They are so interesting and never too over-the-top. All are admirable characters that you can’t help but love.
For readers new to this series, I think it’ll be a fun and entertaining read. But I think the loyal readers like me will enjoy this even more because of the fact that it holds so much more details to the characters and world that we already love.
YES!!!!!! We have waited so long to see how the world's of the Dragon Kings came to be, THIS IS IT!!! Great series and nothing like learning how everything came to be to enjoy it all the more. Even if you haven't read the others, this is an amazing world!
I received this from NetGalley.
First off, I am not familiar with the Dragon Kings series, and this is my first book by the author. This is a prequel to the Dragon Kings Series, but is also marketed as a standalone.
Spice: 3/5
This fell flat... nothing happens. Besides hiding in a cave and listening to the dialogue between maybe 3 characters for most of the book... literally nothing happens.
I could see how this might be appealing to fans of the main series, but this is definitely not a good intro book, nor should it be marketed as a standalone imo. The writing was decent, which is why it gets 2 stars.
So I know this is a prequel to a long-running series which I haven’t read, but I felt I had way more questions than answers after reading this book. This was supposed to be the origin story of the series but things were left very unexplained in my opinion. And while I understand that in this genre we’re not exactly looking for realism, I did find it funny that the dragon who knew nothing about living in a human body instantly knew more about the female body than many real men do! The sex was wonderfully hot and spicy but I couldn’t get past that aspect. I one thing I did appreciate though was that the FMC actually stayed hidden as he MMC requested. He didn’t have to come to her rescue because she was stupid which is what often happens in stories like these. Maybe the next one will be better.
5 solid stars! I had no idea this was a prequel until it was mentioned in the book's forward. I'll be honest, at first I expected to not really *get* it since it was a prequel for a series I hadn't even heard of before, but I was completely and pleasantly surprised! The book opens with Ailis, a Dark Fae, frantically teleporting away from the King's guards as she is pursued for stealing a very important and very rare book. The story is wonderfully told and grabs you from the get go. Lennox is wonderful, and their interactions together are fantastic especially as they figure each other out. The end of the book had me gripping my Kindle because I was so nervous for Ailis and Lennox. I loved this, and now I need to go read the rest of the books this is a prequel to!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC and for introducing me to Donna Grant books.
This was the first book I have read by her, I have heard the Dragon Kings series but could not start (yet), I am so glad that there are more.
Since this is a prequel to the already published series, I found it as a chance to start with, and I am glad that I did.
There is a fight between light and dark, and our heroine Ailis is a dark fae. She is a strong willed, a black sheep kind of girl, who stands out. Lennox (a king) finds her intriguing, unique and atttactive. Their love blooms. They may be different but they are also made for each other.
I really enjoyed their diverse nature and still being close to one another. I will be more than happy to move on with the first book in the series. Thanks!
Thank you to the author, Donna Grant, and her publisher for this ARC of Ignite the Magic.
Ailis never felt like she belonged with other Fae. The division between Light and Dark fae split her family apart, and now she's ready to do the impossible, explore new worlds and realms. When she steps through a doorway to Earth, a realm untouched by fae, she's quick to discover its incredible beauty and also, its dragons. When she meets Lennox, the King of Dragon Kings, she can't imagine ever going back to her world.
I wasn't familiar with the Dark Universe series before reading Ignite the Magic but was intrigued by the synopsis. This book was such guilty pleasure read for me. As soon as Ailis arrives on Earth and sees a massive silver dragon emerge from a lake, I was hooked. The love between Ailis and Lennox is gentle and kind. There are several spicy scenes and lots of tension. I immediately liked Osric, Lennox's best friend, and enjoyed the found family aspect of the story. I also became invested in the other Dragon Kings. Now I'm super curious about the other books in this series–I'm desperate to know what happens next for Ailis and Lennox.
Those who enjoy tropes like fated mates, insta love, found family, and pregnancy will enjoy this book. I tend to stay away from a couple of these tropes, but given this book is a prequel, I knew that a couple of these were inevitable.
Ignite the Magic is a standalone prequel for Donna Grant's existing series, Dark Kings and Dragon Kings. I'm thrilled to have so many more books to read within the Dark Universe!
Thank you to NetGalley, DL Grant LLC, and Donna Grant for giving me an ARC of this book. This review is voluntary.
This is the first book I have read by Donna Grant and I have completely fell in love with her writing. This was such a beautiful story of forbidden love. Lennox and Ailis were absolutely perfect for each other. I loved every single moment of this book. The ending was pure perfection and I still cry when I think about the story. I don’t think that I’ll ever recover from the heartbreak that I felt. I am so going to read more books from this series!
Check TWs before reading
A great read, I had not read the previous books by this author but will now most certainly do so.
I loved the plot to this book, felt it lulled a little in the middle but had a great ending, very much looking forward to diving into the series!
You had no choice but to run from your realm. Ailis didn’t know if she would survive going to another realm but if she wanted to live it was her only choice. Everything that she around her amazed her and when she sees a dragon she is stuck by it.
Lennox can’t believe what he is seeing as he isn’t too sure what is standing in front of him. Even more surprising is that he has shifted for the first time.
They have so much too learn about each other and Lennox knows that he needs to keep her safe and that means going to his mountain.
But can they ever have a future together after finding out that they are mates?
A good read. Great characters that only add to the storyline. Donna never disappoints with her books. Very enjoyable.
Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for the copy. This is my voluntary review.
A powerful prequel to the Dark Kings. Ignite the Magic reveals the background to the Kings and Dragons and takes us on a journey of power, forgiveness, and love. The characters are captivating and vulnerable the story is intriguing and in depth, Ignite the Magic is a great read and one I would recommend to other readers.
This was a really nice tale of a fae who crosses realms finds more than just adventure that she intended. She comes to Earth and finds dragons…with Scottish accents.
I thought it was a good read, and considering it’s a prequel I imagine this lays out a good foundation for the main series. I appreciated the culture shocks between the fae and the dragons and showing what it takes for a leader to bring change and the consequences of such actions. Tropes/themes: found family, dragons, fae, clan wars, child loss.

This was my first book that I've read by Donna Grant and it reminded me why I fell in love with paranormal/supernatural romance in the first place.
I loved every moment of this book. I was so fascinated by the world that she created for both that Fae and Dragons. The love between the characters I felt was perfectly done. They had instant attraction, and instant sexual motivations, but it was done in such a tasteful way. I didn't feel like their relationship was thrown in my face like I've experienced in some other books. I felt like everything progressed naturally for the characters and for the world that they lived in.
The conflict that the characters faced was a difficult one to navigate, and I feel as though they did a great job as handling it the best they could. I do feel that this is only the beginning for them and I'm excited to see where their story leads us in the main series.
Thank-you Donna and NetGalley for allowing me to explore such a wonderful world. I can't wait to see what more is in store!
After finishing the original dragon king series, I wasn't going to read anymore. For me, the books had all become so repetitive and pretty boring for a while now. So I decided I was going to at least finish the main series (because how could I not want Con's book? (Don't get me started on that disaster though...)) and not even waste my time on the spin off. But then I see this one. This one that promises the origin story of the kings. Curiosity got the better of me and I requested it. Now. Don't get me wrong. This book was not bad. It was just so absolutely lacking in any action. If you like insta-love and a perfect couple that have no flaws, you'll love this one.
Oh. And this is, in no way, an origin story.
Ailis is a dark fae who loves nothing more than adventure. When she loses her only remaining family member, she is determined to find out how to open a portal to another world and go thru it. Shockingly enough, she manages to do it the first time she tries. And steps into an overwhelmingly beautiful world. With dragons. Not able to help herself, she sets off exploring. And it's only a matter of time before she comes face to face with one of the beings she never thought were real.
Lennox is the current king of kings. A relaxing swim is interrupted by female of a form he had never seen before. Followed by excruciating pain as the magic of his realm gives him human form. Not quite in line with what we've been told about that for over 20 books/novellas, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that the current kings don't know this happened when they tell their story. This form is extremely uncomfortable for Lennox, but he needs it if he's to learn if Ailis poses a threat to his kind.
This truly was an insta-love story. From the moment these two meet all they think about is the other and pretty much become a couple right away. They are ridiculously understanding of everything, to the point that Ailis has absolutely no problem spending her entire life hiding away in Lennox's cave because they know his people would never accept her. Something that should be unthinkable for someone who craved adventure to the point of opening doorways to places they didn't know.
Aside from the blissful, perfect relationship these two have, we get some serious upheaval amongst the dragons. Mating between the clans has long since been heatedly debated and now it's up to Lennox to decide if he will do something about it when a young couple from different clans declare they are fated mates. What follows is a lot of fighting and much bloodshed before any hope for a better future can be found.
The only part of this that could be remotely considered an origin story is the fact that these two are Melisse's parents. But we literally end with her being born, so all in all, we learn absolutely nothing new here.
